SUMMARY:Hollywood Forever Cemetery Morning Yoga
DESCRIPTION:YOGA CLASSES- Hollywood\n\n\n\nHollywood Forever Cemetery presents Morning Yoga Classes every day but Friday starting at 9:30am. In Buddhist and Hindu teachings\, the Graveyard\, or Charnal grounds\, is a favored place of practice where yogis must confront our mortal destiny\, our fear of death\, and our aversion to impermanence. \n  \n \nIn the Summer of 2020\, as our favorite indoor Yoga studios were forced to close and we found ourselves less compliant in ZOOM classes\, a few of us started coming to Hollywood Forever to practice safely together in the mornings. \nWe are now honored to offer this experience to all yogis\, from beginners to advanced\, looking to deepen their practice in a safe outdoor setting with green grass and quacking ducks. \nWe practice on the Hollywood Forever Cemetery Fairbanks Lawn\, where Cinespia movies are screened\, so there is ample space to spread out and safely distance as you enrich your practice with our sangha community. \n \nAttendance Tips:Cost: Donation based \nParking: FREE! Park anywhere alongside the lawn. Please drive slowly as the property is home to peacocks\, cats\, and many other furry and feathered creatures. \nExperience:  All levels welcome! \nBring:   Mat/Towel/Water & Sunscreen.  Make sure you have a towel to place under your mat as the morning lawns can be dewy. \nSafety:   Give yourself plenty of social distance – we have room to spare so spread out.  Please wear a mask until you are on your mat. \nRain = No Class \n*Please complete your Yoga Liability Waiver online click here. \n  \n \nClass Descriptions:\nVinyasa Flow is a style of yoga characterized by a series of postures (asanas) arranged together so that you move from one to another\, seamlessly\, using breath.  Expect a work out. \nSilent DiscoOHM Yoga is a Vinyasa Flow class with the added feature of personal headphones for each yogi to hear music and the teacher’s guidance.  You and your classmates will share your own intimate world of sound curated by Erica. \nKundalini Yoga is the ancient combination of postures (Asana) with breath-work (Pranayama)\, meditation (Dhyana)\, and word/sound repetition (Mantra) to achieve Bliss (Samadhi).  We do not venerate gurus or teachers of the yogic past\, instead seeking the guru within each of us.  Above all\, we are committed to the ancient yogic principle of Ahimsa – non-harming – with compassion as our guiding principle. \n\n  \n \n\nHours\nMonday: 9:00am – 10:15am\nTuesday: 9:00am – 10:15am\nWednesday: 9:00am – 10:30am\nThursday: 9:00am – 10:15am\nFriday: no yoga\nSaturday: 9:00am – 10:05am\nSunday: 9:00am – 10:00am \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://hollywoodforever.com/yoga-schedule/\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:The FOWLER MUSEUM: Particular Histories
DESCRIPTION:NOW ON EXHIBIT THRU NOVEMBER 13TH- Westwood Village\, UCLA\nUCLA Fowler Museum presents\n\n\nParticular Histories: Provenance Research In African Arts\n \n\n\nProvenance research (an investigation of an artwork’s past ownerships) traces the movement of a given object through different cultural\, economic\, and political contexts. Particular Histories presents five provenance case studies drawn from African material dating to the early 20th century that came to the Fowler Museum from the collection of Sir Henry Wellcome (1853–1936). \nThis exhibition emerges from a three-year project\, funded by the Mellon Foundation\, which aims to unravel the histories of African works at the Fowler and begin reckoning with the legacy of European colonization and its influence on the objects’ use and perception. Multidisciplinary provenance research also lays the groundwork for building connections with communities of origin. \n  \n\n\n308 Charles E. Young Dr N\, Los Angeles\, CA 90024 \n\nFREE EVERY DAY! @ UCLA\nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on works from Africa\, Asia\, the Pacific\, and the Americas—past\, and present. The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples\, cultures\, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions\, publications\, and public programs\, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented. \nAlso featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics\, culture\, and social action. \nFowler Museum at UCLA provides exciting\, informative\, and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAreas of the Collection\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF AFRICA AND THE AFRICAN DIASPORA\n \nOne of the largest and finest in the United States\, and one of the top twenty African collections worldwide\, this collection offers a superb representation of the arts of many African nations\, including objects from Senegal\, Nigeria\, Ghana\, Cameroon\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire)\, Kenya\, Zambia\, and South Africa. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, and notable arts from Haitian Vodou\, Brazil\, and Suriname. \n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n\n\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Puebla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and the Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India\, and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. The Museum is compliant with guidelines mandated by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and has been signaled out by the State of California for its exemplary efforts. \nArchaeological collection areas include: \nCalifornia \nCollections from approximately 1100 sites\, mostly in Southern California. \nSouthwest \nSignificant collections from the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley Expedition of 1933-1938 and several Parowan Fremont sites in Utah were excavated in the 1950s\, and other Anasazi and Hohokam sites. \nMexico \nIncludes objects from 218 sites\, mostly in western and central Mexico. \nSudan \nThe Nubian/Egyptian fortress site at Askut is the source of approximately 60\,000 artifacts excavated by UCLA archaeologist Alexander Badawy in conjunction with the Aswan High Dam Salvage Campaign\, 1962-1964. \nOld World stone tool collection \nIncludes tools from Europe and the Middle East. \n\n\nMUSEUM HOURS\n\nAdmission is FREE \nMonday – Tuesday: closed\nWednesday – Sunday: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm \n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfowler.ucla.edu\n \n\n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:The Venice Run Club
DESCRIPTION:EVERY WEEK\, EVERY RUN\, EVERY BODY- Santa Monica & Venice\nThe Venice Run Club is the heartbeat of Venice. A community of runners here to better ourselves and our community. Come run with us. \n48 for Change\nWith the combination of a global pandemic and civil unrest around racial injustice\, June of 2020 set the stage for important societal and human issues to finally come to light in a more permanent way. This was the same time that two friends\, Justin and Tyler\, decided they wanted to take action to make a difference in the injustices and inequality we see in our communities. \n\n\n\nThe week of George Floyd’s passing\, Justin called Tyler voicing his frustration from Floyd’s murder and subsequent reactions\, and they joined forces to do a running challenge that very weekend that entailed running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. A GoFundMe was set up to collect funds from friends and family throughout the running challenge to donate to help support racial justice. \nWhat started as a way to take the mind off of the pressure cooker of injustice resulted in a massively successful and attention-grabbing fundraiser\, and eventually turned into a 501(c)3 nonprofit\, still strong and growing today: 48 For Change. \nAside from fundraising and donating\, Justin found that the community that gathered to run that weekend was something special\, and needed its own spotlight. A place where anyone can come and simply run with a group of good people. Venice Run Club was born. \nNearly two years later\, we have grown into a strong group of 200+ runners\, given back $100\,000 and over 1\,100lbs of clothing to the LA community\, guided over 40 runners to completing their first marathon\, and become On’s first-ever sponsored run club in America. \nCome make friends\, break a sweat\, and get to know the city in the best way possible: by running its streets. \n\n\n\n  \n\nWeekly Run Schedule\n\n\n\n\n\nTrack Tuesday- 7:30PM\n\nSanta Monica High School- 601 Pico Blvd\, Santa Monica\, CA 90405 \n\n\n\n\n\nMobbin Wednesday- 6:30pm\n\nThe Kinney Hotel- 737 Washington Blvd Venice\, CA 90292 \n\n\n\n\n\nLong Run Saturday- 8:30am\n\nThe Kinney Hotel- 737 Washington Blvd Venice\, CA 90292 \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://venicerunclub.co/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Learn to Fight like a Jedi Knight
DESCRIPTION:EVERY WEDNESDAY- Mike’s Bike Shop\nLearn to Fight like a Jedi Knight. Lightspeed Saber Battling! The world’s fastest light-based fencing\, is happening every Wednesday Night @ Mike’s Bike Shop- 5507 West Pico Blvd\, at Beverlywil Dr\, Century City. @ 7:30pm to 9:30pm. \nCONTACT TONY FOR THE LATEST INFORMATION\,\n\nContact Tony for the latest information. www.facebook.com/tony.zaldua \n  \n\n\n\nLearn to Fight like a Jedi Knight- BEGIN YOUR TRAINING HERE!\nStep by step instructions for individuals \nwww.LightSpeed-Saber.Com/get-started \nwww.twitch.tv/lightspeedsaber \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile you don’t have to do everything in this guide\, it’s a good way to begin\, especially if there is already an existing team near you. (Please note that\, due to COVID-19\, teams are in various states of operation at this time.) \n  \n\n\n\n\nSTEP 1 – CONNECT TO US\n\n\n\n\n\nWe do different things in different places around the web\, from our Instagram to our YouTube channel\, where you’ll find the Lightspeed Saber Rogue Series\, to our TikTok where you can enjoy short snippets from the show! But the place to talk to us is our international Facebook group. \n  \n \nSTEP 2 – CONNECT TO OTHERS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFind individuals or teams near you! \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEP 3 – GET A SABER\nYou don’t technically need an actual LED saber to start learning but it helps to familiarize yourself early. We recommend the Rey-class for your first Lightspeed Saber. Check the weapon class page for regulations to make sure the hilt you purchase is Lightspeed legal. \nNote that you do not need a Lightspeed blade to start practicing moves. You only need one once you begin competing. The standard blade that comes with your purchase should be fine for the time being. \n  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEP 4 – LEARN BASIC MOVES AND CONCEPTS\nWe have tons of free information available for Lightspeed Saber fencing. But if you’re practicing alone\, you may want to learn our sequences. This is a growing library of technical exercises that help you fine tune your technique without a partner. You can do this on your own and evaluate yourself\, or you can enroll in our program\, where we’ll evaluate you to make sure you’re doing everything right. You can even get certified to evaluate others. \n  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEP 5 – GET EQUIPMENT\nTo do Lightspeed Saber fencing you need to be properly equipped. This activity is dangerous. Make sure that you have everything listed on this page. And don’t forget about a mouth and nose covering to protect yourself and others from spreading disease. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEP 6 – LEARN AND PRACTICE BASIC SPARRING TECHNIQUES & STRATEGY\nOur YouTube channel is probably the best source of information for practical Lightspeed Saber fencing. Look for our instructionals and commentaries. \n  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEP 7 – LEARN THE RULES OF COMPETITIVE LIGHTSPEED SABER\nLearn the rules of Lightspeed Saber fencing so you’re ready for your first official duel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nSTEP 8 – COMPETE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRemember\, practice is practice and competition is practice. Nothing gets you learning faster than a tournament. \n  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEP 9 – GO OFFICIAL\nGet a competition membership and start moving up the ladder in your local area. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSIGN UP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEP ????\nBecome the #1 Lightspeed Saber fencer in the world? Rule the galaxy? Meet your destiny? Become one with the force? Who knows what the future holds? \n  \n© 2021 Lightspeed Saber League LLC. All rights reserved. Lightspeed Saber League is not associated with Disney or Lucasfilm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLightspeed Saber fencing\, like all combat-sports\, is inherently dangerous and never completely safe. Always wear safety equipment. Fence at your own risk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nMEETUP DATES/TIMES ARE ALWAYS TENTATIVE. THIS CALENDAR IS AUTOMATICALLY RENEWED. MEETUP EVENTS MAY BE CANCELLED DUE TO HOLIDAYS AND SCHEDULE CONFLICTS. Watch the city’s top up-and-coming talent at the wildest show in town!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nIndecent Exposure Comedy Show Hours\nWednesday: 10:00pm – 11:00pm\n\n\n\n\n  \n \n4219 Santa Monica Blvd\, Los Angeles\, CA 90029 \n  \nLong-standing gay hot spot caters to a leather-wearing crowd\, with cheap beer nights & DJs. \n \nThe current location of Eagle LA has served home to many gay bars over the years dating back 44 years. It was known as the Shed from 1968-1972\, The Outcast from 1972-1983\, the famous Gauntlet II from 1983-2005\, then later\, Eagle LA. \n \nGauntlet II was in operation for 21 years. Then\, in the summer of 2005 Charlie and business partner Vince decided to buy the bar with the intention of making a name change. In April 2006\, Eagle LA was born\, or\, reborn as it may be. There was an original Eagle LA located in West Hollywood at the corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Fairfax. It operated for 15 years and closed in 1995. Although that Eagle is of no relation to Charlie or Vince\, they are proud to reestablish the Eagle LA and become the latest in a long line of Eagle bars in cities throughout the US and around the world. It has always been their mission to uphold the Leather/Uniform/Fetish traditions set forth by the infamous Eagle name and that traditions still holds true today. \n \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://eaglela.com/home/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Pluto TV
DESCRIPTION:IT’S FREE TV! App or Online\nWhat is Pluto TV? Well let’s see. We could pen a historical essay about our 2013 origins. \n \nWe could toss around numbers like 100s of channels\, 200+ content partners\, and 26+ million viewers. We could even drone on about our huge library of on-demand content which spans across all genres of movies\, news\, TV shows\, sports\, documentaries\, and blah blah blahhh… \nBut why complicate things when Pluto TV is\, at its core\, really simple? \nAll you really need to know is… it’s free of passwords\, it’s free of payments\, and it’s free of all those Friday night spats about what to watch. \nPluto TV is a free live-stream television and on-demand video service from ViacomCBS. \n  \n\n\n\nSo just lean back. Drop in and enjoy the show. It’s free.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat will I Find on Pluto TV?\n\n\nLIVE TV\n\n\n\n\nBlockbuster Movies\n \nComedy\n \nCult Classics\n \n\nKids & Family Friendly Programing \n\n\nSports\n \nNews\n\n\nLatino\n \n\n\nWatch on your \nSmart TV\, Streaming Devices\, Mobile App\, Desktop App or Watch On The Web\n\n\n \n\nOwned by ViacomCBS\, Pluto TV is a live-TV streaming service\, not entirely unlike Sling TV and such competitors as DirecTV Now\, Hulu+ Live TV\, or other similar services. But unlike those services which offer streaming access to channels you’d find on cable TV\, Pluto TV offers free content mainly curated from what’s already available online. Pluto TV launched in 2014 and picked up steam fairly quickly making it the largest free TV streaming service in the U.S. \nYou’re not going to find standard TV channels\, though some are represented via their web counterparts\, especially news outlets. Those include familiar names like Bloomberg\, Cheddar\, CNBC\, MSNBC\, CBSN\, and many others. As of April 2019\, it also includes CNN\, though not the full\, live CNN you get on cable. Instead\, the CNN channel features a curated playlist of short-form digital content from CNN’s anchors and reporters. Featured clips are oriented toward lifestyle and culture\, climate change\, the environment\, and original CNN investigations and interviews. A similar channel for NBC called NBC News Now arrived in February 2020. Other recent additions to Pluto include CMT\, Kevin Hart’s Laugh out Loud\, and Red Bull TV\, plus a handful of new themed channels in Celebrity\, Reality\, and Lives\, the perfect cocktail for pop culture and reality TV enthusiasts. \nSports coverage is less conventional — you’re not going to find the likes of ESPN here. Instead\, you’ll find choices like Fight\, World Poker Tour\, Impact Wrestling\, a dedicated Sports News network\, Glory Kickboxing\, and the Big Sky Network. DAZN recently signed a deal to provide an original weekly series on Pluto TV\, and there’s potential for that partnership to expand down the line. Pluto has recently added an official PGA Tour channel with 24/7 coverage of one of golf’s biggest tournaments. \nIn the Entertainment section\, there are reruns of reality and documentary shows alongside episodes of Dennis the Menace\, Thunderbirds\, and other older TV shows. Among those various channels\, you’ll also find Wipeout\, a network that only shows reruns of the popular game show and various iterations from different countries\, as well as Nosey\, which shows reruns of The Jerry Springer Show and The Maury Show\, among others. Meanwhile\, the Curiosity section features Science TV\, Docu TV\, Xive TV\, and even a NASA live stream. New additions include Pluto TV Sitcoms\, offering a selection of older comedies like 3rd Rock from the Sun and The Lucy Show\, and a Spanish-language channel called Pluto TV Cine. \n  \n\nFor additional information\, visit the Pluto TV website @ \npluto.tv\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:50 Years of Water Color
DESCRIPTION:ON EXHIBIT – Santa Monica\nVisit California Heritage Museum as they exhibit 53 paintings by outstanding artists who were members of the California Water Color Society during its first fifty years! The exhibit will run from July 9 – October 30. \n \nCALIFORNIA WATERCOLOR SOCIETY THE FIRST 50 YEARS (1921-1971)\n\nOne hundred years ago a small group of Southern California artists formed the California Water Color Society and held their first exhibition at the Los Angeles Museum of History\, Science and Art. (The spelling at the time was “Water Color”. – two words – Which was common usage in the 1920s.) The founding members were all established\, professional artists. Artists in the exhibition include Marion Kavanaugh Wachtel\, Phil Dike\, Millard Sheets\, Phil Paradise\, Emil Kosa Jr.\, Edward Reep\, Ralph Hulett\, Wayne La Com\, Milford Zornes\, and Rex Brandt among others. Their stated goal in forming the CWCS was to elevate the watercolor medium “to the dignity it enjoyed under such great cultures as those of China and Persia”. \nFREE ADMISSION EVERY FRIDAY\nDuring the first 50 years this organization was in operation\, it was known as the California Water Color Society. After 1971 when larger numbers of artists from other parts of America joined the CWCS\, the board and members chose to change the society’s name to the National Watercolor Society. That name is used to this day to identify society. \nThis exhibition has been mounted to present select watercolors by outstanding artists who were members between 1921 and 1971 when the organization was known as the California Water Color Society. Many of the artists were either on the Board of Directors or served as jurors for society exhibitions during that fifty-year period of time. \n \nThe goal of this exhibition is to visually confirm the CWCS artists from that fifty-year period of time indeed succeeded in establishing Southern California as a center for the advancement of the watercolor medium; just as the founding members had hoped for when they formed the organization in 1921. This exhibition was curated by Gordon T. McClelland for the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University\, the originating exhibition site. \n\n \n2612 Main Street\, Santa Monica CA 90405 \nCALIFORNIA HERITAGE MUSEUM\nThe building that houses the California Heritage Museum is the Roy Jones House and is as interesting and unique as the exhibits themselves. \n \nIn the late 19th Century\, renowned architect Sumner P. Hunt built the home for Roy Jones\, son of the founder of Santa Monica Senator\, John Percival Jones. City Trustees granted Jones a permit to dig a cesspool on April 16\, 1894\, marking the first step taken in the construction of the house. One of Sumner P. Hunt’s earliest surviving buildings\, the Roy Jones home is designed in a style that transitions between the elaborate Victorian Queen Anne Revival to the more simple American Colonial or Georgian Revival. \n   \nThe beauty and grace of the first buildings were documented in the 1894 May publication of ‘Outlook’: “Five new residences\, ranging in cost from $3\,000 to $5\,000\, are now in the course of construction in Santa Monica. Those of Messrs. Roy Jones and Kennelly\, on Ocean Avenue\, is about completed. They are all handsome structures\, and show that there is to be no deterioration in architectural styles in our growing city by the sea.” The June 30\, 1894 edition further reinforced this appreciation: “Sumner P. Hunt\, architect\, of Los Angeles\, had made his ‘imprint’ upon this town in a pleasant way that is not excelled by anyone who has ever ‘struck’ it. He designed the residence of Mr. Roy Jones. They are all neat\, slightly edifices\, and are a gratifying step in advancing the style of our architecture.”  \n \nThe permanent exhibition at the museum includes photographs of the extraordinary move to Main Street\, the Jones family\, and an Ostrich Farm that made up a great deal of Ocean Park in 1893.\n \nThe California Heritage Museum is committed to promoting the diversity and rich history of California’s heritage through exhibitions\, lectures\, publications\, and community events. \n\nADMISSION\n\n\nGeneral Admission: $10.00    \nSeniors & Students: $5.00 \nMembers & children under 12: Free \nMilitary and Veterans: Free \n\n\n\nGROUP TOURS\nThe Museum welcomes visitors of all ages\, however\, to allow everyone to get the most from their visit\, special school and group tours are by appointment only. \n\nMuseum Hours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday: 6:00pm – 9:00pm in conjunction with food trucks\nWednesday – Sunday: 11:00am – 4:00pm\, Last Tour at 3:30pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncaliforniaheritagemuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The Broad Museum
DESCRIPTION:FREE TUE – SUN- Bunker Hill\, DTLA\nThe Broad makes its collection of contemporary art from the 1950s to the present accessible to the widest possible audience by presenting exhibitions and operating a lending program to art museums and galleries worldwide. \nBy actively building a dynamic collection that features in-depth representations of influential contemporary artists and by advancing education and engagement through exhibitions and diverse public programming\, the museum enriches\, provokes\, inspires\, and fosters appreciation of art of our time. \n \nThe Broad was founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler\, the museum offers free general admission and presents an active program of rotating temporary exhibitions and innovative audience engagement. The Broad is home to 2\,000 works of art in the Broad collection\, which is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. \n  \n \nThe Broad from Home\nThe Broad is committed to inspiring and fostering an appreciation of contemporary art through our digital initiatives. Experience #TheBroadFromHome to find inspiration through music\, poetry\, performance\, workshops\, and conversations centered around the Broad collection. \nOverview \nPerformances \nTalks & Conversations \nArtist Spotlight \nFamily Art Workshops \nMore Online Programs \n  \nThe Broad Collection\nEli and Edythe Broad have been building their collection of postwar and contemporary art over the last 50 years. With a belief that the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made\, the Broads took to collecting art of their own time. \nThe Broad is home to 2\,000 works in the Broad collection by more than 200 artists\, and is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. The collection features in-depth holdings of influential contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Mark Bradford\, Jasper Johns\, Jeff Koons\, Barbara Kruger\, Yayoi Kusama\, Kerry James Marshall\, Julie Mehretu\, Takashi Murakami\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, Cindy Sherman\, Cy Twombly\, Andy Warhol\, and more\, plus an ever-growing representation of younger artists. \n  \nView Our Collection Here\n \nIn Under the Table\, 1994\, the viewer is both in the world of imaginary giants and in the world of remembered childhood. Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. When standing close to it\, one’s own distorted reflection bends around smooth pert curves. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission is Free\nThe Broad requires all visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance. Some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge. \n\n\n\n\n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Wednesday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.\nThursday – Friday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.\nSaturday: 10:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nSunday: 10:00 a.m.-6:00p.m. \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.thebroad.org\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Buffalo Soldiers in CA
DESCRIPTION:NOW ON EXHIBIT- CAAM\, Expositions Park\nWitness as California African American Museum opens exhibit on “For Race and Country: Buffalo Soldiers in California”\, on display until October 30. \nBuffalo Soldiers have been mythologized in movies\, television programs\, and popular songs. Despite this romanticism\, the history of Buffalo Soldiers is complex\, and their stories are relevant and worthy of deeper understanding. \nFor Race and Country: Buffalo Soldiers in California explores the surprising history surrounding all-Black US Army regiments whose members—both in and out of uniform—left powerful traces in the Golden State. Venturing beyond myths\, the exhibition confronts the role of Black soldiers in the Army’s history of violence against Native American people\, explores historical debates in the Black community over participation in wars\, and exposes cracks in a society permeated by racism\, in which African American soldiers faced the searing conflict between commitment to equality for their people and to the country they chose to serve. Such is the “double life” African Americans live\, in the words of scholar W.E.B. Du Bois\, including in the armed forces. \nThrough artifacts\, audio interviews\, photographs\, historical records\, period uniforms\, newspapers\, musical scores\, and media representations\, the exhibition presents a sweeping narrative of Black soldiers and their families who made California home during the era of government-sanctioned racial segregation in the US military. For Race and Country highlights Californians\, from Northern California to the Mexican border\, whose little-known influence transformed the state\, and the nation. \nFor Race and Country: Buffalo Soldiers in California is curated by Susan D. Anderson\, history curator\, with consultant Anthony J. Powell and researcher Caroline Collins. \nCAAM recently interviewed Susan D. Anderson and Anthony Powell about this exhibition: \n\n\n600 State Drive\, Exposition Park\, Los Angeles\, California 90037 \nFREE! TUES – SUNDAY- Exposition Park\nThe California African American Museum (CAAM) focuses on enrichment and education on the cultural heritage and history of African Americans with a focus on California and western United States. \n \nAdmission is free to all visitors. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \n \nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. Each quarter\, curators review the current holdings and decide as a committee on future acquisitions. We view our collection as a living body — constantly evolving\, growing\, and reflecting the world in which we live. \n \nSome examples of CAAM’s collection include the Walter Burrell Collection of audio recordings of Burrell’s interviews with African American celebrities\, broadcast by a local radio station in the early 1970s; the oral histories of Celes King\, who was both a local civil rights activist as well as a former Tuskegee airman; and selections from the collection of visual artist John Outterbridge. \n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Saturday: 10:00am – 5:00pm\nSunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncaamuseum.org/exhibitions\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Santa Monica History Museum
DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. Though physically erased\, Broadway lives on in the stories that are preserved and shared to illuminate past inequities and spotlight the inspirational individuals who created a center of social and civic life on their own terms. \n\nAdmissions\n\nGeneral – $5.00\nSeniors & Students – $5.00\nChildren under 12 – Free\nMuseum members – Free\nVeterans & Active-duty military – Free \n\nHours\nMonday – Wednesday: Closed\nThursday: 3:00pm – 8:00pm\nFriday – Sunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \nMuseum Holiday Hours\nWe are closed in observance of the following holidays: New Year’s Day\, President’s Day\, Easter\, Memorial Day\, July 4th\, Labor Day\, Thanksgiving\, and the day after\, Christmas \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nsantamonicahistory.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

The land art movement first appeared in the late 1960s and served to challenge the location\, material\, size\, and temporal existence of a work of art. Double Negative consists of two long straight trenches\, 30 feet wide and 50 feet deep\, cut into the “tabletop” of Mormon Mesa\, displacing 240\,000 tons of desert sandstone. The cuts face each other across an indentation in the plateaus’ scalloped perimeter\, forming a continuous image\, a thick linear volume that bridges and combines the “negative” space between them. \nmore info at: Double Negative \n\nAdmission to Double Negative by artist Michael Heizer is always free.\n\nHours\nMonday: 11:00 a.m.-6:00p.m.\nTuesday: Closed\nWednesday: 11:00 a.m.-6:00p.m.\nThursday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nFriday: 11:00 a.m.-6:00p.m.\nSaturday – Sunday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00p.m. \n  \nGeneral Admission: Free\nSpecial exhibitions: $18\nMembers: Free\nChildren under 12: Free\nSeniors and students: $10 \nSpecial exhibitions are free every Thursday\, 5-8pm.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.moca.org\n \n  \n\n\nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Turtle Races at Brennan's
DESCRIPTION:EVERY 1ST & 3RD THURSDAY\n\n\nCome down to the Turtle Races at Brennan’s Bar & Restaurant\, every 1st and third Thursday\, and watch our star athletes put their track shoes on and tear up the track. \nYeah\, turtle races. It’s the real sport of kings\, and it’s found its home here at Brennan’s for 45 years. In 1975\, then-owner Ab Lawrence brought “the world’s stupidest sport” to Marina del Rey as a lark\, hoping that he could attract a few people for a couple of weeks. But the turtles knew how to draw a crowd\, so the races kept going. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHere’s how it works\n\n\n\n\nEvery first and third Thursday\, the turtles come out of their turtle sanctuary and start limbering up. Come 8:30pm\, the first race starts and five turtles will enter the center of the ring. First one that makes it out of circle wins. It’s as simple as that! \nThink you’ve got a hot tip on who’s gonna win? Pay for a ticket to put your name in your favored turtle’s hat. If they win\, your name might get called—and you’ll get to win a prize from our prize wheel. Plus\, all of the money goes to charity! \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere’s only one rule…\n\n\nNo pointing! Our turtles get shy. If caught\, well… you’ll just have to come to a race to find out what the punishment is. \nForty-five years in\, and the turtles have shuffled out of the ring over 10\,000 times. Come visit us on the 1st and 3rd Thursday and take part in the tradition with us. But remember—don’t point! \n\n  \n\nHours\n1st & 3rd Thursdays: 8:30pm – 9:00pm\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.brennansla.com/turtle-races\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
