SUMMARY:Dockweiler Beach Fire Pits
DESCRIPTION:EVERY DAY ’til MIDNIGHT- Dockweiler State Beach\nThe Dockweiler Beach Fire Pits are located about 3 miles south of Playa del Rey\, this inviting beach features 3 miles of shoreline\, an RV park\, and over 2\,000 regular vehicle parking spaces. The wide sandy beach lies beneath the departures flight path of LAX\, offering fantastic belly views of airlines headed out over the Pacific. The lot entrance is at Vista del Mar and Imperial Highway. \n\n\nFIRE PITS RULES\n\n\n\n\n\nAny grills or BBQs must fit inside the fire pit\, which is 2′ wide. No grills\, grilling\, or flames or fires on the sand.\nTo use the fire pits\, you bring your own charcoal or wood and a way to light them.\nPlease do not use sand to put out the fire.\nHelp keep our beaches clean by preventing ashes or debris from falling into the sand.\n\n  \n\n\n\nThere’s no better way to end a fun day at the beach than to circle up around a cozy bonfire. Not all California beaches allow bonfires\, but here in the Marina del Rey area\, we’re lucky that Dockweiler State Beach does permit regulated burns in provided fire rings. Follow these tips to ensure your group has an enjoyable time. \n\nIf you want a pit\, arrive early. From May through September\, the pits are in high demand\, especially on the weekends\, and there are some diehards who arrive at dawn to claim their spots for the entire day. You cannot reserve fire pits as you would a campsite. Do not leave your pit unattended\, even for a quick dip in the ocean – if you do\, don’t be surprised to find another group has taken over the site. There are between 60 – 80 fire pits located just north and south of where Vista del Mar intersects with Imperial Highway. That sounds like a lot\, but consider that Dockweiler is also home to an RV park\, and you’re all competing for space.\nBring everything you need – wood\, s’mores\, snacks\, et cetera (see “Your Packing List” below).\nThe beach and all amenities close at midnight.\nBefore you leave\, snuff out the flame with water. Stir the embers after they are covered with water and make sure that everything is saturated. Do not use sand to distinguish the fire\, as it creates a mess for the next guest.\n\n \nYOUR PACKING LIST\n\nWood and charcoal (wood for that nice bonfire and charcoal for cooking – see below about barbecue rules). Both can be purchased at Ralph’s grocery stores: 4700 Admiralty Way\, Marina del Rey; 8701 Lincoln Boulevard\, Playa del Rey. Only burn clean wood (nothing treated with paint\, chemicals\, etc.) in the pits.\nFire starter and a lighter. You can purchase kindling from most any grocery\, home supply\, or sporting-goods store. Or\, prepare your own starter with this old-school camping craft: Fill a cardboard egg carton with dryer lint\, wood shavings\, paper shreds\, or other ignitable materials. Pour a small amount of melted candle wax into each cup to make things stay put. Break off cups individually and place into your wood stack. Light the cardboard cups and watch how easy your fire takes off – even in the wind.\nIf barbecuing\, note that large stand-up barbeques are NOT allowed on the sand or in the parking lots. However\, you can bring a low-profile version and place it inside the fire ring.\nLong-handle grilling sticks. These are great for cooking hot dogs and kabobs and roasting marshmallows.\nHot glove or mitt. Don’t ruin your night with a burn from handling hot wood\, pots\, or grills. Items like the Ove Glove offer protection while still allowing dexterity.\nFood! Doubt you’ll forget this\, but you may want a separate checklist so that you remember all the elements for your meal. It’s easy to overlook things like serving spoons\, plastic utensils\, salt and pepper\, napkins or wet wipes\, and containers for leftovers. Paper plates are great for cookouts since they’re ok to burn in the fire afterward.\nCamp/beach table. Depending on the size of your group\, you may prefer to set up your dinner fixings buffet style on a simple folding table. Whatever you bring\, remember that you’ll need to carry it across the sand to the pit and back to the parking lot at the end of your evening. So only take what you really need.\nYou’ll want a beverage cooler with ice\, especially if you heed our warning and arrive early in the day to claim your spot. A bag to hold discarded recyclables is a good idea\, too.\nComfort items. Ask each person in your group to bring his or her own beach chair or picnic blanket. Remind them that despite warm daytime temps\, the beach cools down a lot at night; having extra blankets and jackets is a smart move.\n\n  \n  \n  \nClick here to read beach rules and regulations at LA County Beaches including Dockweiler State Beach. \n  \nDOCKWEILER STATE BEACH PARKING INFORMATION\nParking at Dockweiler State Beach costs between $6 (weekday\, low season) and $13 (weekend\, high season) and there are no in/outs. If you leave the lot\, you must pay again to enter. The first 300 cars to arrive during weekdays pay a reduced rate of $3; during weekends and L.A. County holidays\, the reduced rate for the first 300 cars is $5. There is limited street parking on Vista del Mar\, but take note of the parking signage. Click for an interactive parking map with fees and times. \n  \nHours\nMonday – Sunday: 6:00 a.m.- 12:00 Midnight \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nvisitmarinadelrey.com/dockweiler-state-beach\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Greystone Mansion and Gardens
DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY 10am – 5pm- Beverly Hills\nThe historic Greystone Mansion and Gardens is owned by the City of Beverly Hills and is operated through the Department of Community Services – Recreation and Parks Division. \nGreystone Mansion\, and the surrounding grounds it shares its magnificent beauty with\, are rich in California history. Edward Laurence Doheny\, the original proprietor of the Greystone land\, was born in 1856 in the small Midwestern town of Fond du Lac\, Wisconsin. By the time he was a young teen\, Doheny’s adventuresome spirit and love of the wilderness led him to prospecting for gold and soon thereafter\, oil. In 1892\, Doheny and his friend Charles A. Canfield\, were the first to strike oil in Los Angeles. They later discovered large oil deposits in Mexico which\, combined with their Los Angeles holdings\, made them the largest producers of oil in the world at that time. \n \nEdward Doheny and his wife Carrie Louella Wilkins had two children. Their first\, a daughter Eileen\, passed away when she was just seven years old. On November 6\, 1893\, their only son\, Edward “Ned” Laurence Doheny\, Jr.\, was born and grew up as heir to one of the world’s great financial empires. Ned went on to marry Lucy Smith of Pasadena and in 1926 Edward Laurence Doheny Sr. gave his son as a wedding gift a premium parcel of land consisting of 12.58 acres with sweeping citywide views. \n \nConstruction of the palatial manor home began February 15\, 1927 and although Ned\, his wife Lucy\, and their five children moved into the residence in September 1928\, the estate took three years to complete at a cost of over $3 million\, an almost unimaginable sum in real estate at the time. \n\nDue to the current circumstances surrounding COVID-19\, the Doheny Greystone Estate is open to the public by reservation only.  Please make a reservation here:\nbeverlyhills.org/visitgreystone\n \nPark grounds are usually open to the public daily\, but may occasionally be closed for holidays\, filming or special events. \nNo fee for parking or park admission on open park days. \nGreystone Mansion and Gardens is open only for special events. \nFor information on park closings\, weddings\, photography and other private events at Greystone\, contact the Greystone office\, \n310-285-6830\, or visit the Park website at www.beverlyhills.org/Greystone \nHours\nOpen Daily: 10:00am – 5:00pm\nDay Light Savings Hours: 10:00am – 6:00pm \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.greystonemansion.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The Abbey West Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:THE WORLD’S GREATEST GAY BAR – West Hollywood\nCome and join your friends at The Abbey\, welcoming you to a weekend of Pride celebrations! Sip on delicious cocktails\, dance the night away to our great music selection\, and enjoy a special Pride menu. Celebrating PRIDE is all about having a great time with friends and family! \n \nAfter nearly three decades in the business — an achievement in any industry but a unicorn-level rarity in the dining and nightlife scene — The Abbey is more than a dance club or restaurant. It’s a community center\, albeit one with sexy\, barely clad dancers\, 10-oz apple martinis\, and magical memories. \nThe weekly calendar includes Brunch Service on Saturdays\, All That ’90s on Tuesdays\, Ash WeHo\, Kink Thursdays\, and Sinful Fridays. The most popular day remains Sunday Funday when locals start showing up for brunch. By mid-afternoon\, there’s a line snaking down the block that’d make you think it’s on Saturday night. \nOn a typical weekday at The Abbey\, you’ll see parents with baby strollers coming from the park next door and guys in tank tops after a workout. That segues into the lunch crowd\, which eventually becomes the happy hour and dinner crowd. Around 9 p.m.\, the dancers — both guys and girls — come out. \nTHE ABBEY PRIDE WEEKEND\n \n\nTHE OWNER\n \nDavid Cooley\, hailing from Ohio and armed with a degree in Hotel Management from the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, packed up and moved out to Los Angeles in 1981. Pursuing a new career in finance\, Cooley was a stockbroker for two years before becoming a vice president at Wells Fargo Bank. \nShortly thereafter in 1991\, Cooley set out on his own and invested in a small\, discreet space in West Hollywood that he renovated into a coffeehouse called The Abbey.  After nearly twenty-five years and five expansions\, The Abbey is more than 14\,000 square feet and known as the Best Gay Bar in the World\, having won the award twice from Logo. \n \n  \n\nHours\nMonday – Friday: 11:00am – 2:00am\nSaturday – Sunday: 10:00am – 2:00am \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.theabbeyweho.com/weeklyevents\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:FREE FAMILY NIGHT
DESCRIPTION:FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH in Pasadena\nThe first Tuesday of every month from 4:00 to 8:00pm is Kids Space Museum Free Family Night.  Admission to the Museum is FREE for everyone during these hours only. Families can engage with special programming and performers that highlight cultures and traditions from around the world. Expect crowds and long admission lines during the spring and summer months. \n \nThe Mission & History of Kids Space Children’s Museum\nThe mission of this foundation is to nurture the potential of all children through driven experiences\, inspiring them to become joyful\, active learners.\n\n\n\nTo help us achieve this\, we work by the following core values: \n\nRespect—We respect our guests by asking their opinions and listening. We also respect our guests and embrace diversity.\nIntegrity—We do what we said we will do even when it is not the easy thing to do. We want to be transparent with our finances so our investors know how they are making a difference.\nSafety—The safety of our guests comes first. We have a safe environment where young minds of all ages can explore\, learn\, and have fun.\nExperiential Learning—Education is the core of who we are. We believe that when learning becomes fun\, the learner does so willingly.\n\n\nThe Purpose of a Kids Space Children’s Museum\nAn incredible seed bed of learning and discovery\, the purpose of a children’s museum is to inspire children to learn and grow\, equip parents and teachers\, and to be a safe place where learners of all abilities can do so at their own pace and focus on topics of interest to them. This is often referred to as “Free Range Learning.” What makes us different from a school is our approach to informal education. We believe in giving our guests hands-on experiences that are relevant and inspiring. \nIn Dr. Howard Gardner’s book\, Intelligence Reframed: Multiple Intelligences for the 21st Century\, he points out the value of children’s museums in helping a child discover their learning style. Kidspace provides a learning environment filled with the wonder and joy of the natural world. \nA definition from the Association of Children’s Museums: \nKIDS SPACE MUSEUM is a nonprofit institution that provides children with hands-on learning experiences and interactive activities\, because children learn through exploration and play. The first children’s museum\, called the Brooklyn Children’s Museum\, was founded in the year 1899. SUMMARY:GLOBAL RAINBOW LASER INSTALLATION
DESCRIPTION:CELEBRATING PRIDE THROUGH ART– Los Angeles Coastline\nVenice Pride presents Artist Yvette Mattern’s Global Rainbow installation in association with Bacardi nightly from June 3 to 5 across the California Coast. \n \nYou do not want to miss this large-scale public art light installation. A beacon of diversity and acceptance\, the artwork beams seven rays of laser light representing the color spectrum of a natural rainbow. The presentation is poetic\, magical and powerful. \nThe Global Rainbow is a large-scale public art light installation created by Yvette Mattern. The artwork beams seven rays of laser light representing the color spectrum of a natural rainbow: Red\, Orange\, Yellow\, Green\, Blue\, Indigo\, and Violet. The 120+Wpowerlaserlight projection beaming in parallel horizontal lines creates a natural perspective horizon arc simulating a natural rainbow arc and has a trajectory or viewing spectrum of up to 60 KM depending on atmospheric conditions. \nThe presentation is poetic\, magical\, and powerful. It encompasses the skyline and its viewing perspective is as ephemeral as viewing a natural rainbow. Theoretically and symbolically its presentation encompasses geographical and social diversity in its reach throughout distinct points across the globe. \n \n  \n  \n \nAbout Yvette Mattern\nYvette Mattern is a New York and Berlin-based visual artist whose work has an emphasis on video and film\, which frequently intersects performance\, public art\, and sculpture. Her work has been exhibited internationally. \nYvette Mattern received her MFA in New York City from Columbia University’s Film Division in 1987. She has worked on and collaborated with many artists on film and theater projects including Cindy Sherman’s theatrical feature ‘Office Killer’\, Al Pacino\, Nicolas Cage\, Diller+Scofidio\, and The Builder’s Association among many others. \nHer ongoing monumental laser light installation Global Rainbow has been presented over fifteen times since 2009 including launching the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad in the Northeast\, Northwest England\, and Northern Ireland. \nThe Global Rainbow installation beams seven rays of high specification laser light\, representing the spectrum of the seven colors of the rainbow. The artist had been inspired by seeing an unusual rainbow in a beautiful spot at ‘Walden Pond’ in Massachusetts. Mattern aims to connect all demographics in a beautifully engaging experience. She sees her work as a visual translation of hope and peace. \n  \n  \n  \n\n \nSAVING LIVES THROUGH ACCEPTANCE OF DIVERSITY \n  \nA REBIRTH OF PRIDE\n\n\nFor nearly 100 years Los Angeles’ Westside has been known as a place that celebrates differences. Decades before West Hollywood’s birth\, L.A.’s coastal region was an inclusive oasis home to no fewer than ten gay bars and bathhouses in the ’40s and ‘50s. Among them The Friendship\, Tropical Village\, Jack’s at the Beach\, and the Crystal Baths. Over the years businesses serving the neighborhood came and went\, but by 2006 Roosterfish (est. ’79) was all that remained. A decade later it too would shutter forcing an orphaned community to ponder their place West of the 405. Venice’s first Pride celebration took place on June 3\, 2016\, in an effort to protect an LGBTQ community at risk of extinction due to Roosterfish’s exit. A year later Venice Pride unveiled the Venice Pride Flag Lifeguard Tower\, scored the first NFL team in history to sponsor an LGBT Pride event\, promoted the opening of a new gay bar in Santa Monica\, The Birdcage. Venice Pride’s biggest accomplishment was yet to come. In Fall 2017\, Venice Pride announced amid much fanfare the return of Roosterfish. Made possible through a unique nonprofit partnership with the new operator\, the beloved gathering place held its grand re-opening in June 2018 to coincide with the third annual Venice Pride. \nWhat began as a grassroots push to promote visibility and a renewed sense of community among Westside queer Angelenos each June is blossoming into a year-round organization with programming dedicated to saving lives through acceptance of diversity.Venice Pride is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are proud members of InterPride and dedicated to education\, to the commemoration of LGBT heritage and to the celebration of LGBT culture and liberation. \n\n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nvenicepride.org/events/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

Discover encyclopedia articles\, multimedia\, primary sources\, games\, and other learning resources that support student research and reinforce curriculum standards. \n\n\n\n\n\nSIGN ON HERE WITH YOUR LOS ANGELES PUBLIC LIBRARY CARD\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n\n  \n\nAge-appropriate for K-12\n\n\nBritannica School offers age-appropriate resources at 4 levels\, the Learning Zone for early learners and elementary\, middle and high school levels. \n\n  \n\n\n \nElementary\nSelect Elementary learning and begin your adventure looking for people\, places\, and things. Watch and learn with videos and animations. Have fun with games and activities. \n  \n \nMiddle & School Versions Grow as they do\nMany online products offer multiple levels for different ages\, but often struggling readers are reluctant to move to a lower level because the interface and experience are designed for younger students. With Britannica School\, content is available at all three reading levels and students can move quickly from one level to another without changing the look and feel of the site. Content and Interface work together to give the user an experience tailored to their needs. For example\, if elementary students move to a level with more advanced content\, their interface becomes more advanced as well; but middle and high school students stay in their more advanced interfaces\, even if they choose level 1. \n  \n  \n \nFor Educators and Home School Teachers\n\n\nOur biggest users tell us that students\, teachers and librarians all want to go beyond looking up content. You want to filter\, tag favorites\, adjust reading levels\, share content\, and serendipitously discover new and related ideas. \nWith Britannica School\, educators can map text and multimedia to classroom activities on the fly and even toggle within an article to see the State and Common Core standards associated with it. Teachers can create\, save and share lesson plans using the new lesson plan builder. They can map Britannica content\, define steps and activities\, select materials and share their ideas with other teachers. They can also access and review plans created by other teachers. \n\n\n\nBritannica School’s ESL/ELL Support\n\n\nEnglish language learners may choose to have articles read aloud with each word highlighted as it is read to increase comprehension. \nOther tools are built in for support as well including the Quick Click dictionary that provides definitions and audio pronunciations right when the reader needs them without leaving the article. \nBritannica School also offers multiple translation tools with an emphasis on Spanish-English translation but with more than 50 world languages available. \n\n\nUse Anywhere\nBritannica School is accessible at school\, home or anywhere you have an internet connection. Britannica School is designed to fit to any device—you can access content on a computer\, tablet\, or even a phone\, and Britannica School’s design will fit your screen. \n\n \n  \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nbritannica.com\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:AMIR’S GARDEN
DESCRIPTION:OPEN YEAR ROUND- Griffith Park\nThe Trail to Amir’s Garden is a 1.1 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located LA’s Griffith Park. This shady rest stop and memorial garden features beautiful wild flowers and water-bearing\, fire-resistive succulents interspersed with natives and memorial trees and plants. The trail is primarily used for hiking\, walking\, running\, nature trips\, and horses and is accessible year-round. It is rated as moderately difficult trail. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe gardens are cared for by official volunteers since its creation in 1971. Amir’s Garden is considered a rest stop and not a dedicated picnic area\, therefore it can’t be reserved for events. The nearest restrooms are located at Mineral Wells Picnic Area. Activities related to the care of a large garden may be taking place at any time\, including watering. Amir’s Garden is a most pleasant place for a hike-in picnic\, with a selection of picnic tables.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe History of Amir’s Garden\nAmir Dialameh worked a steep hill in Griffith Park for than three decades with a pick and shovel and turned a scorched\, barren landscape into a lush\, shaded grove that is visited daily by a steady stream of hikers and horseback riders. \nFor thirty-two years\, Dialameh worked in the garden most days of the week\, hiking up a service road to the rugged Mineral Wells location. Over the years\, he planted pine and jacaranda trees along with rose bushes\, geraniums\, oleander\, and yucca that grew into the beautiful oasis it is today. \n“…what you need first and foremost here is shade\,” Dialameh explained in 1989. “That’s why I planted trees like the jacaranda. In ten years\, this place will be covered with their branches.” \nHis words were prophetic. Today Amir’s Garden is nearly five-acres of shady rest stop for Griffith Park’s hikers and equestrians. \nDialameh first came to appreciate nature as a child during hiking trips in the Alborz Mountains of his native Iran. As his love of hiking and nature developed\, so did his affinity for the United States of America. \n“I was intrigued by the volunteerism that built this country… people doing things instead of relying on the government.” In 1963 while visiting his brother in Pittsburgh\, Dialameh made the ultimate decision to immigrate and moved to the Los Angeles area. \n\n\nGetting There\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe hike to Amir’s Garden actually begins near one of Griffith Park’s larger picnic areas\, Mineral Well Picnic Area. Find the dirt service road heading west from the intersection of Griffith Park Drive and Mineral Wells Road. \nWalk straight through an immediate junction and follow the dirt road on a southwestern climb to Amir’s Garden. After a horseshoe bend in the road\, and a quarter mile from the start\, you will pass a water tower that is accompanied by broad views stretching beyond Griffith Park toward Glendale\, the Verdugo Mountains\, and San Gabriel Mountains. \n \nLooking back down the trail\nAfter less than half a mile\, the trail arrives at Amir’s Garden where you’ll discover a pocket of tall sycamores arcing over a mountainside of verdant plants including succulents like ice plant and jade. There are a few picnic tables at the entrance of Amir’s Garden and others hidden throughout. \n  \n \nAmir’s Garden\n\nStroll through a web of footpaths and recharge your batteries in this refreshing Griffith Park retreat. With extra effort\, you may continue up North Trail toward Mount Hollywood\, Mount Bell and other peaks in Griffith Park. Otherwise\, return the way you came for a satisfying 1-mile round trip hike. No fee or permit is required to hike to Amir’s Garden and dogs are welcome.\n\nTo get to the trailhead: Take the 5 Freeway to the Los Feliz Boulevard exit. Drive west on Los Feliz Boulevard to the first light and turn north on Crystal Springs Road. After 1.5 miles\, turn left on Griffith Park Drive and drive 1.2 miles to the intersection with Mineral Wells Road. Turn left onto Mineral Wells Road and park immediately in the spaces along the road. The trail to Amir’s Garden heads west from the intersection of Mineral Wells Road and Griffith Park Drive. \nTrailhead address: Mineral Wells Road & Griffith Park Drive\, Griffith Park\, Los Angeles\, CA 90027 \n\n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttp://www.amirsgarden.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
