The current club facility was built in 1967 having relocated from its temporary facility elsewhere in the marina. The California Yacht Club was founded in 1922 in Wilmington Harbor near San Pedro. When Marina del Rey was constructed in the early 1960s\, CYC relocated. \n \nToday the club serves its very active and diverse membership needs by providing club programs\, events\, and facilities that have earned the respect of being one of the leading Yacht Clubs in the country. DESCRIPTION:NOW OPEN  FRIDAY – SUNDAY- Griffith Park\nGriffith Observatory is a free-admission facility located on the south side of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park. The building and grounds are accessible for all visitors. The building is busiest on weekends\, during summer and holiday periods\, and at sunset. \n\nGriffith Observatory’s grounds and roads are generally open the same hours as Griffith Park\, 5:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.\, every day. Access to Griffith Park is free\, though there is paid parking closest to the Observatory. There are public restrooms located next to the Observatory parking lot. Trailheads on Observatory grounds lead to Mount Hollywood\, the Greek Theatre area\, and Fern Dell. \n\n\nDaily Programs\n\nSamuel Oschin Planetarium\n\n\nOur most prominent daily programs are the shows in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium\, With its spectacular Zeiss star projector\, digital projection system\, state-of-the-art aluminum dome\, comfy seats\, sound system\, and theatrical lighting\, the 290-seat Samuel Oschin Planetarium theater is the finest planetarium in the world. Every show is presented by a live\, engaging storyteller\, and one of our three current shows is offered every 60 to 90 minutes each day the Observatory is open. \n\nPublic Telescopes\nthe Observatory offers many other stellar experiences while you visit. During the day\, you can see the live image of the Sun on our coelostat (solar telescope) in the Ahmanson Hall of the Sky. Each evening\, there are free public telescopes on the roof and lawn for you to observe the night sky. \n \nLeonard Nimoy narrates The Once and Future Griffith Observatory movie profiling the Observatory’s history\, renovation\, and current offerings. DESCRIPTION:JUNE 21st- Live Broadcast\nSummer Solstice at Griffith Observatory marks the start of summer in the northern hemisphere with a live online talk! Observatory staff will discuss the meaning of local noon\, show how the Sun’s changing path across the sky causes seasonal changes\, and determine where the Sun sets on the western horizon. \n \nSeasons\n\nSummer begins in Earth’s northern hemisphere at 2:14 a.m.\, PDT\, today. Winter begins in the southern hemisphere at the same time. The June/summer solstice occurs when the Sun reaches its maximum declination (23.5 degrees). This is when Earth’s northern hemisphere is tilted as far toward the Sun as possible during a given year. \n \nWhat Is Summer?\n\nFrom the summer solstice until the start of autumn – the autumnal equinox in September – days will get shorter\, and the noon elevation of the Sun will decrease. This happens because the Earth’s axis is tilted 23½ degrees to its orbit. June 21 is the longest day of the year. \n\nExplore the Exterior Exhibits\nThe grounds of the Observatory present compelling opportunities to observe the movement of the Sun and Moon and to walk a scale model of the solar system. Looming over the lawn is a monumental sculpture celebrating astronomers who gradually revealed the nature of the universe. The terraces offer vistas of Los Angeles\, Griffith Park\, Mt. Wilson\, the Pacific Ocean\, and\, of course\, the famous Hollywood Sign. \nAstronomers Monument & Sundial\nGreeting visitors upon their arrival at Griffith Observatory\, the Astronomers Monument is a large outdoor concrete sculpture on the front lawn that pays homage to six of the greatest astronomers of all time. \n \nSolar System Lawn Model\nEngraved on the front sidewalk of Griffith Observatory is a scale model of our solar system. One-quarter-inch-wide bronze lines mark the orbits of the planets\, which are indicated with bronze plaques also embedded in the sidewalks. \n\n \nSunset & Moonset Radial Lines\nSeven stone and bronze lines embedded in the lower West Observation Terrace radiate out from the building toward the western horizon. Each line points toward a notable sunset or moonset position on the horizon. \n \nThe Gottlieb Transit Corridor\n\nThe new Robert J. and Suzanne Gottlieb Transit Corridor\, a monumental 150-foot-long\, 10-foot-wide glass-walled passageway\, immerses visitors in the motions of the Sun\, Moon\, and stars across the sky and demonstrates how these motions are linked with time and the calendar. \n\n\n\nRoof & Terraces\n\nGriffith Observatory’s roof and terraces give visitors a chance to observe the panorama of Los Angeles. SUMMARY:The Old LA Zoo
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year.  \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure.  \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. DESCRIPTION:A LITTLE BIT OF TOKYO IN LITTLE TOKYO- Japanese American National Museum\n\nThe James Irvine Japanese Garden is a traditional Japanese Garden located on the Little Tokyo campus of the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center. The garden is open to the public for enjoyment seven days a week between 10am and 4pm unless there is a special event. The Garden also serves as a unique and elegant venue for weddings\, photo shoots\, memorial services and other private events. \n\n\n\nHistory\n\nEstablished in 1981. \nA centerpiece of the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center\, the Garden also known as Seiryu-en or the Garden of the Clear Stream\, was constructed by more than 200 volunteers who contributed more than 3\,000 man-hours. The garden was designed by landscape architect Dr. Takeo Uesugi and received the National Landscape Award in 1981\, the nation’s highest award for environmental improvement and community beautification. Most recently\, the James Irvine Japanese Garden underwent a major restoration with the purpose of creating a revitalized green space in downtown Los Angeles and sharing the aesthetics of Japanese culture with the community. The James Irvine Garden has served the community\, for nearly three decades\, by providing a tranquil and elegant departure from the urban landscape. It is the intent of the Board of Directors\, staff\, members and volunteers of the Japanese American Community & Cultural Center that this tradition be maintained for the benefit of all. \n\n\n\n\n100 North Central Avenue\, Los Angeles\, California 90012 \n \nJapanese American National Museum is the first gallery in the United States dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry as an integral part of U.S. story. Through its comprehensive collection of objects\, images and documents\, as well as multi-faceted exhibitions\, educational programs\, documentaries and publications. The Japanese American Museum is admission free every Thursday from 5–8 p.m. \nAlso on the third Thursday of every month\, the Japanese American Museum is FREE ALL DAY!\n \nAmericans of Japanese Ancestry\nThe Japanese American Museum was established in Los Angeles to preserve the rich heritage Asian culture. The gallery is dedicated to preserving the history and culture. It is located in the Little Tokyo area near downtown Los Angeles\, California. \n\n\n\nWe believe in the importance of remembering our history\, to better guard against the prejudice that threatens liberty and equality in a democratic society. The guides are available in English\, Japanese\, Korean\, Mandarin\, and Spanish. Visitors may borrow an iPod Touch with the guides free of charge while viewing the exhibition. The guides may also be downloaded free from the Apple App Store. \nJANM’s audio guides are made possible by a generous grant from the Nitto Tire U.S.A.
