SUMMARY:Hammer Museum Free Screening
DESCRIPTION:TONIGHT- The Hammer Museum\nThe Hammer Museum present a free screening of \n\n\nMEET JOHN DOE\n\nU.S.\, 1941 \nDirector Frank Capra and screenwriter Robert Riskin’s 1941 political fantasy Meet John Doe wasn’t set in the near or distant future but it feels more prophetic by the hour. It’s got it all: a disconnected\, alienated (largely white) American working class\, fake news\, an incipient fascist cabal and\, of course\, mobs. In Capra and Riskin’s telling\, the parting shot of a disgruntled reporter (Barbara Stanwyck)—a manifesto in the form of a suicide note\, written by a fictional everyman—inadvertently launches a nationwide political movement after her nervous newspaper finds a patsy to play the everyman (Gary Cooper). Outwardly well-intentioned\, the movement is quickly co-opted by corrupt autocrats bent on seizing power. Even Capra and Riskin’s struggle—and ultimate failure—to bring their nihilistic vision to a satisfying resolution seems to resonate with today’s headlines. \n35mm\, b&w\, 129 min. Director: Frank Capra. Screenwriter: Robert Riskin. With: Gary Cooper\, Barbara Stanwyck\, Edward Arnold. \nPreserved by the Stanford Theatre Foundation and UCLA Film & Television Archive. \n\n\n\n\n\nMAGIC TOWN\n\nU.S.\, 1947 \nFor his post-war\, second take on American populism\, screenwriter Robert Riskin leans heavier into the romance than he did in Meet John Doe if only to recast love as the ultimate form of bipartisanship. A Hollywood paean to the pleasures of small town life and the simple grace of being median\, Magic Town finds the forces of change— Jane Wyman’s crusading editor—and the forces of stasis—James Stewart’s cynical pollster—locked in flirtatious combat over the fate of Grandview\, a pleasant burg that Stewart discovers perfectly reflects the aggregate opinions of the nation as a whole. The media\, politicians and all manner of profit-seeking elites are the targets of Riskin’s satire in defense of the common sense folk who inevitably\, in Riskin’s view\, always end up holding the bag. \n35mm\, b&w\, 103 min. Director: William A. Wellman. Screenwriter: Robert Riskin. With: James Stewart\, Jane Wyman\, Kent Smith. \n\n\n\n  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10899 Wilshire Blvd\, Los Angeles\, CA 90024\n\n\nThe Billy Wilder Theater\, home of UCLA Film & Television Archive’s public programs\, is among a handful of venues nationwide able to exhibit an entire century’s worth of moving images in their original formats. From the earliest silent films requiring variable speed projection all the way up to cutting-edge digital cinema\, the Wilder can accommodate an array of screen technologies. \nThe theater’s modern design by Michael Maltzan Architecture stylishly interprets cinema’s play of light and movement in real space\, and the 285-seat interior features comfortable leather seats with superb sightlines. The theater is made possible by a generous gift from Audrey L. Wilder and named in honor of Mrs. Wilder’s late husband\, the legendary screenwriter\, director and producer. Born on the outskirts of the Austro-Hungarian empire\, Billy Wilder fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s to become a master of Hollywood film language and a shrewd comic observer of the American scene. Among the many classics Wilder co-wrote and directed were Double Indemnity (1944)\, Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Some Like It Hot (1959). \n\nPlease note that food is not permitted inside the theater. There are dining options in the surrounding Westwood Village. You may also opt to bring your own food and eat in the courtyard just outside the theater. \n\n  \n\n\nThe Hammer Museum champions the art and artists who challenge us to see the world in a new light\, to experience the unexpected\, to ignite our imaginations\, and inspire change. \nThe Hammer understands that art not only has the power to transport us through aesthetic experience but can also provide significant insight into some of the most pressing cultural\, political\, and social questions of our time. We share the unique and invaluable perspectives that artists have on the world around us. \nA vibrant intellectual and creative nexus\, the Hammer is fueled by dynamic exhibitions and programs—including lectures\, symposia\, film series\, readings\, and musical performances—that spark meaningful encounters with art and ideas. \nAnd through our unwavering commitment to free admission and free public programs\, the Hammer Museum is open for all and FREE FOR GOOD.\n  \nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Sunday: 11:00am – 6:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://hammer.ucla.edu/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

It is a 501(c)(3) corporation and has a volunteer Board of Directors\, who are nominated and elected by the membership at large. The Peninsula Neighborhood Association derives its effectiveness and strength from the diversity\, vitality and commitment of its membership\, as it pursues its goal of preserving the Peninsula’s unique quality of life in an ever-changing environment. \nNOW YOU CAN JOIN/RENEW MEMBERSHIP ONLINE HERE \nor \nDownload Membership Form. \n\nPENINSULA NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION\nThe Peninsula Neighborhood Association is a neighborhood organization open to all Peninsula residents\, whether property owners or renters\, for a per person annual fee of $25.00. It has a volunteer Board of Directors who are nominated and elected by the members of the Peninsula Neighborhood Association each November. \nThe Peninsula Neighborhood Association was incorporated in 1960 to oppose a plan by the City to replace the bayside beach with a sea wall\, as exists in Naples\, for private boat docks (thus the name Peninsula Neighborhood Association). Since winning that battle\, the Peninsula Neighborhood Association has been actively involved in preserving the Peninsula’s quality of life through sponsoring local events and activities\, as well as representing Peninsula residents before the City on matters that could affect our neighborhood. \nMISSION STATEMENT:\nTo protect and preserve the beaches along the Long Beach Peninsula for public usage and to ensure these beaches\nand community be maintained at the highest residential and recreational standards. \nHISTORY\nOne of the first structures on the Peninsula was an isolated duck hunting club located at the bayside end of what is now 61st Place. The club was established at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. The first summer beach homes\, primarily owned by residents of Los Angeles and Pasadena\, were built in 1902-04. Owners of these summer homes were able to reach the Peninsula by means of an interurban electric train that ran from Los Angeles to Newport Beach. The train ran down the center of Ocean Boulevard the length of the Peninsula and then across a trestle connecting the east end of the Peninsula to Seal Beach. \n“The Pavilion\,” which at various times during its history served as an expensive restaurant and roller skating rink\, was established around 1910-12 at the oceanside end of 62nd Place\, which was then called Pier Avenue. Pier Avenue undoubtedly got its name from the pier that extended out into the ocean from The Pavilion. The Pavilion and its pier burned down a few years before a massive hurricane swept across the Peninsula in 1939\, destroying or causing significant damage to most structures throughout the Peninsula. \nThe Seaside Walk Boardwalk\, which was built in the ’20s\, is considered by residents to be a historical treasure. Attempts to replace it with concrete have been strongly opposed by Peninsula residents over the years and\, in the 1980s\, money was raised by residents to provide new surface boards (the City replaced the boards again in 2003). \nThe Peninsula has grown to encompass its current mix of single-family homes\, duplexes\, condominiums\, and apartments. Residents are a diverse group of families\, singles\, and senior citizens who have been residents for decades. The Peninsula continues to evolve\, while at the same time retaining its unique environment and lifestyle. \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nlbpeninsula.org/summer-concert-series\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Tiny Porch Concerts
DESCRIPTION:SUNDAY – Peter Strauss Ranch\nTiny Porch Concerts presents the 2022 Summer Concert Series! Listen to Taylor Ashton with the Dales and enjoy some drinks this Sunday at Peter Strauss Ranch. The music starts at 5:00 pm. \nVIP Beer\, Wine\, and Cheese Reception start at 4:00 pm. \n \nTaylor Ashton  Taylor Ashton was raised by his father in Vancouver\, Canada. He now lives in Brooklyn\, where he wakes up around 8 a.m. and begins his day by playing Bananagrams with his wife. He doodles constantly\, on iPads and napkins. He buys all his clothes second-hand\, and he once sewed the top of socks onto the sleeves of a jacket that was too short for him. And now\, he’s bringing that creativity and ingenuity to his first ever solo album\, The Romantic. \nTaylor’s career began in Vancouver as frontman and songwriter for Fish & Bird. The Vancouver Folk Fest called them “Canada’s most unique folk-rock ensemble”\, with reviewers taking note of Taylor’s “off-kilter lyrical excursions” (The Georgia Straight) and his “rich\, compelling voice” (Exclaim!). From 2006 to 2014 they recorded 4 albums and exhaustively made the rounds of the festival and touring circuit of Canada\, the U.S.\, and the UK. \n \n \nThe Dales The Dales are a band carried by three-part harmonies and a deep appreciation for classic songwriting. They are a genre twist between Americana and vintage rock. \nDrew Lawrence\, a multi-platinum songwriter\, (Christina Perri – Jar of Hearts) teamed up with a long-time musical partner and guitarist Preston Pope to form The Dales. With the 2019 introduction of singer/songwriter Jacqueline Tozzi\, The Dales found the missing piece in their creative harmony. \nJanuary 2020 The Dales released “Easy Times” an EP that is charting both on triple-A and Americana radio. Media play soon followed with features on NPR’s World Café and Acoustic Café as well as TV interviews on NBC and ABC. “The title track “Easy Times” is a tremendous follow up from their year-old debut LP and has a late 70’s and early 80’s vibe that is both uplifting and Classic.” American Songwriter Magazine \n \n\n \nPeter Strauss Ranch\, 30000 Mulholland Hwy\, Agoura Hills\, CA 91301 \nWelcome to Tiny Porch Concerts. \nOur last full season\, 2019\, seems so far away.  We have kept the spirit alive by hosting live streams\, playing in our living rooms\, listening to music from some of our favorites and discovering amazing new artists.  Now it’s time for us to enjoy live music again right here in the Santa Monica Mountains.  We couldn’t be more excited to announce our return to Peter Strauss Ranch! Tiny Porch Concerts was able to raise the funds through our sponsors and VIP donors to rebuild the stage which was lost to the Woolsey Fire in November 2018. Saturday\, June 5th 2022 will mark our return to Peter Strauss Ranch at 30000 Mulholland Hwy\, Agoura Hills\, CA 91301.   Make sure you are on our email list to get updated information of other Tiny Porch happenings.  We could not be more excited about the 2022 season. Artists are coming from Nashville\, San Francisco\, San Luis Obispo\, and of course Los Angeles.  We want to send out a huge THANK YOU to our sponsors and VIP donors!  You bring this series alive! \nIf you like the series and want to support it but are not a sponsor or VIP donor\, you can still help.  There are donation boxes at every show\, or you can donate by clicking on the “Donate” button at the top of our ticketing page.  And of course\, we are always looking for volunteers to help with each production.  Tiny Porch Concerts is a non-profit 501c3 dedicated to the artists and the local National Parks that hold our concerts.  All proceeds are donated to the Santa Monica Mountains Fund. \nWe hope you enjoy the music as much as we do!  – Tiny Porch Concerts \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.tinyporchconcerts.com/upcomingshows\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \nhttps://www.tinyporchconcerts.com/upcomingshows

SUMMARY:Santa Monica History Museum
DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. Though physically erased\, Broadway lives on in the stories that are preserved and shared to illuminate past inequities and spotlight the inspirational individuals who created a center of social and civic life on their own terms. \n\nAdmissions\n\nGeneral – $5.00\nSeniors & Students – $5.00\nChildren under 12 – Free\nMuseum members – Free\nVeterans & Active-duty military – Free \n\nHours\nMonday – Wednesday: Closed\nThursday: 3:00pm – 8:00pm\nFriday – Sunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \nMuseum Holiday Hours\nWe are closed in observance of the following holidays: New Year’s Day\, President’s Day\, Easter\, Memorial Day\, July 4th\, Labor Day\, Thanksgiving\, and the day after\, Christmas \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nsantamonicahistory.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:African American Firefighter Museum
DESCRIPTION:EVERY SUNDAY – Los Angeles\nVisit The African American Firefighter Museum! The African American Firefighter Museum is dedicated to promote diversity and to stand up for inequality against all races and genders. \nThe first floor contains vintage fire apparatus\, stories and pictures of pioneering African American Los Angeles Firefighters. The Museum gallery is located on the second floor with pictures\, artifacts and other memorabilia of African American Firefighters from around the country. \nOPEN EVERY SUNDAY FROM 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm\n \n\n\n1401 S Central Ave\, Los Angeles\, CA 90021 \n\nHISTORY\nThe AAFFM opened it’s doors as a Museum on December 13\, 1997. The dedication of the Museum also served as the acknowledgement of what was believed to be the city’s first 100 years of service by African American Firefighters (1897-1997). In 2002\, the Los Angeles Times contacted the AAFFM and stated they had discovered factual information to indicate the history started before 1897 with a man named Sam Haskins\, who was listed as the first Los Angeles Fireman of African decent when he was hired in 1892 and killed while responding to a fire in 1895. \nToday the Museum is open to the public and is strictly volunteer and donation driven. It is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization and it is available for use by organizations and individuals that desire to host events such as; meetings\, luncheons\, dinners\, banquets\, book signings\, film viewings\, jazz festivals\, social dances\, receptions and retreats. Our beloved historian\, 96 year old retired Firefighter Arnett Hartsfield\, who passed away in 2014 was our most cherished volunteer. SUMMARY:Hollywood Heritage Museum
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY FRIDAY-SUNDAY- Hollywood\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum\, is located in the Lasky-DeMille Barn\, which was built in 1901.  The story of the early Hollywood motion picture industry and the historic Hollywood community is told through archival photographs\, historic documents\, movie props and related memorabilia.  Visitors experience the actual structure where Cecil B. DeMille’s office exists\, furnished with selected personal DeMille belongings\, and where countless movies were filmed and studio staff worked and played. \nOn December 27\, 1956\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was designated California State Historic Landmark No. 554\, recognizing the significant role the building played in the birth of the Hollywood motion picture industry.  Since 1985\, Hollywood Heritage\, Inc. has funded the preservation\, restoration and maintenance of the barn. It’s the oldest existing motion picture production building in Hollywood\, having been established as the Burns-Revier Studio in 1912\, and becoming the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company in 1913.  The Lasky Company merged with Adolph Zuckor’s Famous Players in 1916\, becoming Famous Players-Lasky and merging with Paramount Distributing Company\, finally becoming Paramount Pictures Corporation. In 2014\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [See the Time Line on the Museum link for a more detailed history of the barn]. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVISITING THE MUSEUM\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum is open Friday\, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4 pm. As we share our ample parking lot with the Hollywood Bowl\, the museum is occasionally closed when the Bowl has an event.  If you are traveling a long way to visit us\, it might be a good idea to phone first to make sure we are open: (323) 874-2276. \n\n\nPARKING\nParking is free. There is a large parking area on the east side of Highland Avenue\, in front of the museum.  There is no entrance facing Highland Avenue.  You have to go around the corner either on Milner Road or Odin Street and immediately turn into the lot.  If there are parking lot attendants at a barricade\, tell them that you are visiting the museum. \nPUBLIC TRANSPORTATION\nThe Metro subway station closest to the Museum is the Hollywood-Highland stop.  We are located approximately a half-mile north on Highland Avenue\, about a 12-minute walk. \nBECOME A DOCENT:\nHollywood Heritage is a volunteer driven organization. Our docents assist museum guests and help with our Barn programs\, as well as many other activities associated with historic preservation issues and the day-to-day activities that make our organization so vital.  If you are interested in becoming involved\, click here. \n  \n \nHOLLYWOOD HERITAGE ARCHIVE:\nHollywood Heritage maintains an archive of historic photographs\, documents\, and other material related to the film industry and the community.  Our archive also includes considerable holdings on Hollywood real estate history and buildings of architectural significance.  We continue to seek material related to our dual mission of industry and community history.  Questions regarding our archive and donations procedures should be directed to our Collections Manager\, Richard Adkins. \nDONATION OF PHYSICAL ITEMS:\nHollywood Heritage welcomes donations both monetary and physical objects.  Donated items fall into two categories. \nFor resale in the Museum Store:  The museum store contains new and used items.  The older items are all donated to Hollywood Heritage and include books on the motion picture industry and its participants\, and books on the Los Angeles area.  It also includes used DVDs\, VHS tapes and other electronic storage of motion pictures\, as well as related items. These types of donated items can be dropped off at the museum along with the donor’s name and address so that\, if desired\, donor recognition and/or a tax letter can be provided by the Collections Manager. \nFor Hollywood Heritage Archive:  These are items that Hollywood Heritage’s curator agrees are compatible with our collection.  An appointment may be set up with our Collections Manager.  Much of the collection has been donated by individuals and families with relatives who contributed to the film industry and the Hollywood community\, often with the goal of preserving their relatives’ participation in Hollywood. We are also interested in photographs or other documentation of any properties in Hollywood\, as we maintain an archive of each property by address.  For further information about donations you may contact our museum manager. \nHollywood Heritage\, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 California state non-profit corporation.  All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.  We will be happy to provide a receipt for donations for tax purposes. \n\n  \n  \n \nAdmission:\nHollywood Heritage members:  Free! SUMMARY:Train Rides in Torrance
DESCRIPTION:EVERY 1st SUNDAY & 3rd SATURDAY- Wilson Park\, Torrance\nSouthern California Live Steamers provides mini-train rides on public run days every first Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and every third Saturday of the month from noon to 3 p.m. All SCLS members are City of Torrance volunteers with annual fingerprint clearance and are not paid for their time expended on maintaining the trains and facility\, and providing the rides.Donations are appreciated. \n  \n \nIn 1987\, for the Torrance 75th anniversary event\, the City of Torrance asked SCLS if they could set up a small track on the back end of Wilson Park. At the time this was a vacant lot\, no trees and only weeds for vegetation. Considerable effort was expended by both the City and SCLS to prepare the area and lay the tracks necessary to run the trains. During the City’s 75th Anniversary Celebration in October 1987\, the free train rides were so well received by the public that the City sought to have SCLS run the trains on a regular basis. On May 11\, 1990\, the City and SCLS entered into a 25-year License Agreement allowing SCLS to provide free train rides at Wilson Park on a regular basis. A new home was found! \nANOTHER 25 YEARS \nThe mini-train rides have become a popular feature of Wilson Park. Originally\, free train rides were offered once a month on the first Sunday of each month. Today\, SCLS provides free train rides twice a month on the first Sunday and third Saturday of each month\, and on special occasions. The City and SCLS entered into another 25-year lease agreement thru May 11\, 2040. \nSouthern California Live Steamers\, Inc. operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization under IRS rules and is a registered California non-profit corporation. All of the income for the operation of SCLS is derived by donations from its members\, passengers and corporate sponsors\, and thru fundraisers. SCLS does not charge the passengers for rides on public run days\, though donations are accepted from our riders on public run days which is on the 1st Sunday and 3rd Saturday of each month. Funds received are used to pay SCLS expenses such as insurance\, maintenance costs\, facility upgrades\, fuel\, track repairs\, future track projects\, and other expenses. All SCLS members are City of Torrance volunteers and are not paid for their time expended on club projects or operations. \nmers \n  \nHours\n3rd Saturdays: 12:00pm – 3:00pm\n1st Sundays: 11:00am – 3:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.torranceca.gov/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:2022 Festival of Chariots Parade
DESCRIPTION:SUNDAY – Santa Monica\nCHANT. DANCE. BE HAPPY. Join the bliss! Welcome and celebrate with us! Festival of Chariots is the place to be. Brought from the cultural heart of India\, this ancient Ratha Yatra festival is an offering we bring to many beautiful beaches\, campuses and parades. \nThe Annual festival of the Chariots Parade will begin by the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and head south on Main Street from Pico to the end of the city limits before continuing on to Venice Beach. \nMain Street will be closed to cars starting at 8AM on that Sunday\, reopening as the parade passes\, no later than 11:30AM. \n \nThe Festival of the Chariots\, also known as Ratha-yatra\, or “cart-festival”\, originates from an ancient tradition in India. It commemorates a joyous celebration of life and glorification of God. The ancient annual Ratha-yatra parade in Jagannatha Puri\, India\, attracts one million people every year. \nThe local Los Angeles version attracts approximately 40\,000 parade and festival participants. Every year on the first Sunday morning of August onlookers are surprised by the procession of three glittering red\, blue and gold\, ancient style\, east-Indian chariots traveling slowly through Santa Monica and Venice. The chariots do not move by motor. They are hand pulled by the spectators. \n \nThe parade has its basis in a famous story from the scriptures of India: God\, playing the role of a rich\, powerful king\, ventures on His chariot with a secret notion to return to the place of His sweet memories\, where He lived as a child growing up in a rural cowherd village. On the way He pauses to rest his horses and some old former village friends discover Him. They pick up the ropes that yoke the horses to His grand chariot and affectionately force Him to return with them to His old home. \nThe Los Angeles chariot festival is a reenactment of this affectionate relocation of a king. Participants sing and dance and lovingly pull Jagannatha from the status of the reverential God into the intimate confines of their hearts. This is bhakti-yoga\, or devotional service to Krishna. Rendering any service in the parade\, even just the act of pulling the chariot ropes\, is beyond even good karma. According to the ancient scriptures of India\, it is the very means of transcendence and awards one liberation from samsara\, the cycle of repeated birth and death. \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.mainstreetsm.com/festival-of-chariots\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Hammer Museum Free Screening
DESCRIPTION:TONIGHT- The Hammer Museum\nThe Hammer Museum presents a free screening of  \n\n\n\nNÉNETTE AND BONI\n\nNénette et Boni\, France\, 1996 \n“For Nénette et Boni\, we (Godard and Denis) knew that we wanted the opposite of the film I did before (I Can’t Sleep\, 1994). We wanted to work with long lenses and do mostly close ups\, to be extremely close. When I decide [on a style of shooting] with Agnès\, I try never to change it even though sometimes it’s difficult to stick with your principle while shooting. I know that the only reasonable thing is to stick to it\, because the principle came at the moment that I was most creative–when I was writing and dreaming about the film. It’s too easy to abandon the principle purely because of a difficulty. But\, on the other hand\, Agnès and I are always aware that we have to be very open to the choreography of the bodies and give a lot of freedom to the actors. I always tell the actors what the principle is of a scene\, but inside that principle they are free.”—Claire Denis\, Filmmaker magazine interview with Ira Sachs\, 1997 \n35mm\, color\, in French\, Vietnamese and English with English subtitles\, 103 min. Director: Claire Denis. Screenwriters: Claire Denis\, Jean-Pol Fargeau. Cinematographer: Agnès Godard. Editor: Yann Dedet. With: Grégoire Colin\, Alice Houri\, Jacques Nolot\, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi\, Vincent Gallo. Print courtesy of the UCLA Film & Television Archive. \n\n\n\n\n\n35 SHOTS OF RUM\n\n35 rhums\, France/Germany\, 2008 \n“Claire always chooses actors that are beautiful. This beauty is already part of the sexual [dynamic]. Then\, in almost all her films there’s a dance sequence. I like to dance myself\, that’s for sure. I like to shoot dance sequences because it’s done handheld. It’s like you are dancing\, also. That means there is also music when we shoot\, so this is just fantastic because you forget everything\, the weight of the camera\, technical difficulties and everything.”—Agnès Godard\, KQED interview with Michael Fox\, 2013 \n“In terms of the comparison with dance\, there’s also the fact that over-the-shoulder camerawork requires you to be in rhythm with the actors\, which is like dancing with a partner. And what was infinitely pleasurable and truly liberating for me was learning to find the rhythm of my gaze within the actors’ rhythm.”—Agnès Godard\, Film Comment interview with Yonca Talu\, 2018 \n35mm\, color\, in French and German with English subtitles\, 100 min. Director: Claire Denis. Screenwriters: Claire Denis\, Jean-Pol Fargeau. Cinematographer: Agnès Godard. Editor: Guy Lecorne. With: Alex Descas\, Mati Diop\, Nicole Dogué\, Grégoire Colin.

What follows is pure delight as the actors’ attempt to incorporate ever more fanciful suggestions. This rarely performed comedy written by a friend of Shakespeare’s is a wild joyride of a play and a love letter to the theatrical invention. Perfect for family audiences. \n\n\nThis season REGISTRATION is required! There have been few singer/songwriters that have been as prolific and impactful as Carole King. Driven by an intense love and admiration for Carole’s music\, seasoned tribute artist Carla Buffa felt compelled to assemble an excellent group of musicians to pay homage to King’s legend with a show that includes all of the chart-topping hits that you’ve come to know and love over the years. Buffa is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist who has been a professional musician\, performing nationally and internationally for over 30 years. \nBEACH ST. A GO GO – August 6\n \nThis six-person family-friendly event band located out of Valley Village\, California has a big sound\, made up of professional hard-working musicians who all have many years of entertainment experience under their belts. After nearly fifteen years of creating glorious music and theater as Center Stage Opera\, we decided that our company name should reflect all the musical genres we encompass: Opera\, Musical Theater\, Jazz\, and even Rock ‘n Roll. We are most definitely still an opera company\, and we remain committed to filling the need for classical vocal arts in the community. However\, our love for music and theater extends beyond the classical arts into other musical genres as well. \n\nNOHO DO’S AND DONT’S\nFor your comfort\, you may bring blankets\, low chairs (under 3 ft. in height)\, tarps\, and pillows. Please keep animals tethered and respect your neighbors by being mindful of your space and the view of others. \n\nABOUT VALLEY CULTURAL FOUNDATION\nOur Mission\nValley Cultural Foundation embraces the diversity of talent\, community\, business\, and education\, by providing live entertainment programs and events in the arts. \nOur History\nFounded in 1975 to assist the Los Angeles City Department of Recreation & Parks in bringing arts and culture to the San Fernando Valley\, the Valley Cultural Foundation has been at the forefront of culture\, arts\, and arts education for more than 45 years. \n \nThe Valley Cultural Foundation’s free Concerts in the Park was launched in 1975 under the guidance of our first chairwoman\, educator Lou Bredlow. Today\, the concerts are still presented free of charge and enjoyed by more than 140\,000 Valley residents each year. First presented in Shadow Ranch Park\, our concerts have a permanent home at the Lou Bredlow Pavilion in Warner Center Park. Built on land generously donated by the Harry Warner family in 1967\, the Pavilion was built for $1.3 million dollars\, $1\,000\,000 of which came from Quimby funds and $300\,000 from the Valley Cultural Foundation’s donors. Today\, we hold a 25-year lease on the Pavilion from the Los Angeles City Department of Recreation & Parks\, and the facility is used for a variety of our cultural and arts activities. \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nvalleycultural.org/concerts-events/noho-summer-nights\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
