SUMMARY:Suihoen - The Japanese Garden
DESCRIPTION:NOW OPEN- Van Nuys\n \n6100 Woodley Ave\, Lake Balboa\, CA 91406 \n  \nNestled amidst the bustling San Fernando Valley lies an oasis of serenity – the Japanese Garden at Van Nuys\, also known as Suihōen (水芳園)\, meaning “garden of water and fragrance.” This captivating 6.5-acre sanctuary transports you to a world of tranquility\, offering a glimpse into traditional Japanese garden design and a chance to reconnect with nature’s calming embrace. \n \nA Journey Through Three Distinct Styles\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys is a masterpiece of design\, incorporating three distinct styles of Japanese gardens. As you embark on your exploration\, prepare to be enveloped by: \n\n\nTsukiyama (mountain borrowing) style: This style cleverly borrows the scenery of the surrounding hills\, creating the illusion of a much larger space. Let your imagination wander as the boundaries between the garden and the natural landscape seem to blur. \n\n\nChisen (pond garden) style: A central pond\, symbolizing the vastness of the ocean\, takes center stage in this style. Graceful bridges connect small islands within the pond\, adding a touch of whimsy and tranquility to the scene. Keep an eye out for the vibrant koi fish that call this pond their home. \n\n\nKare-sansui (dry landscape) style: Embrace the beauty of minimalism with the Kare-sansui style. Rocks\, sand\, and gravel are meticulously arranged to represent water and mountains\, creating a space for contemplation and reflection. \n\n\n  \n \n  \n \n  \nA Haven for Relaxation and Reflection\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys is more than just a visual treat. It’s a place to unwind\, de-stress\, and reconnect with your inner peace. \n\n\nStroll the Winding Paths: Meandering paths\, crafted from natural materials\, weave through the landscape\, inviting you on a journey of discovery. Allow yourself to be present in the moment\, savoring the sights\, sounds\, and scents of the garden. \n\n\nFind Serenity by the Koi Pond: The gentle murmur of water and the graceful dance of the koi fish create a calming atmosphere. Take a seat on a nearby bench and let the tranquility wash over you. \n\n\nUnwind Amidst the Dry Landscape: The stark beauty of the Kare-sansui style fosters a sense of peace and mindfulness. Allow the raked sand and meticulously placed rocks to inspire contemplation and a connection with nature’s simplicity. \n\n\n  \n \n  \nA Cultural Gem in the City\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys isn’t just a beautiful space; it’s a cultural gem. As you explore\, you’ll encounter traditional Japanese elements like: \n\n\nTorii gate: A traditional gate that marks the entrance to the garden\, signifying a transition from the everyday world to a sacred space. \n\n\nPagoda: A multi-tiered tower\, a familiar feature in Japanese gardens\, adds an architectural touch and a sense of history. \n\n\nTea house: While not always open to the public\, the presence of a tea house hints at the cultural significance of tea ceremonies in Japanese tradition. \n\n\n \n  \n \n  \nPlan Your Tranquil Escape\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys is open to the public free of charge (donations are appreciated). The garden is open Tuesday through Sunday\, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm\, offering a convenient escape during the workweek or a peaceful weekend retreat. \nEmbrace the Tranquility\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys awaits you. Immerse yourself in the calming beauty of this haven\, explore the intricacies of Japanese garden design\, and discover a place for relaxation\, reflection\, and a touch of cultural exploration. So\, take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life and find your moment of peace amidst the serenity of the Japanese Garden. \n  \n\nHours and Admission\n\n\n\nHours\nMonday – Thursday: \n\nMorning Reservation Window (9:30am – 12:00pm)\nAfternoon Reservation Window (1:00pm – 3:30pm)\nBetween 12:00pm – 1:00pm\, we are CLOSED\n\nWe are closed Friday through Sunday; closed on all Federal & City of Los Angeles Holidays; and closed within 24 hours of rain. \n——————————————————————————————————————————————————\nAdmission\nAdmission is currently Free! \nRight now\, our reservation system will be under maintenance\, so guests will NOT NEED A RESERVATION TO VISIT THE GARDEN.  During this time\, guests may arrive as “walk-ins.”  Please note the reservations system will eventually return! \nAdmission is free and guests are allowed a 2.5 hour window to visit the Japanese Garden.  Adherence to Terms and Conditions (listed below) are required. \n  \nTERMS AND CONDITIONS: \nSpace in the Garden is limited\, so visitors are permitted to visit either during the “Morning” or “Afternoon” window – they CANNOT visit for both in the same day\, as this would take away openings from other potential guest bookings. \nGroups of 10 or more people must call in the day of desired visitation to check if there is capacity available for their group. \nWhen guests arrive\, they must check in at the Security gate before entering the parking lot\, and then sign in at the Admission Office before entering the garden. \nThe 2.5 hour time window is strictly enforced and guests who arrive 15 minutes before the closing of that time window will not be allowed to enter.  Each group must exit the garden before their time window expires. \nAll members of the booking party must follow the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health COVID-19\nguidelines including\, but not limited to: \n\nPrior to attending your reservation you and all members of your party will conduct a self-symptom check\nfor cough\, shortness of breath\, and/or fever prior to entering the facility. SUMMARY:AMIR’S GARDEN
DESCRIPTION:OPEN YEAR ROUND- Griffith Park\nThe Trail to Amir’s Garden is a 1.1 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located LA’s Griffith Park. This shady rest stop and memorial garden features beautiful wild flowers and water-bearing\, fire-resistive succulents interspersed with natives and memorial trees and plants. The trail is primarily used for hiking\, walking\, running\, nature trips\, and horses and is accessible year-round. It is rated as moderately difficult trail. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe gardens are cared for by official volunteers since its creation in 1971. Amir’s Garden is considered a rest stop and not a dedicated picnic area\, therefore it can’t be reserved for events. The nearest restrooms are located at Mineral Wells Picnic Area. Activities related to the care of a large garden may be taking place at any time\, including watering. Amir’s Garden is a most pleasant place for a hike-in picnic\, with a selection of picnic tables.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe History of Amir’s Garden\nAmir Dialameh worked a steep hill in Griffith Park for than three decades with a pick and shovel and turned a scorched\, barren landscape into a lush\, shaded grove that is visited daily by a steady stream of hikers and horseback riders. \nFor thirty-two years\, Dialameh worked in the garden most days of the week\, hiking up a service road to the rugged Mineral Wells location. Over the years\, he planted pine and jacaranda trees along with rose bushes\, geraniums\, oleander\, and yucca that grew into the beautiful oasis it is today. \n“…what you need first and foremost here is shade\,” Dialameh explained in 1989. “That’s why I planted trees like the jacaranda. In ten years\, this place will be covered with their branches.” \nHis words were prophetic. Today Amir’s Garden is nearly five-acres of shady rest stop for Griffith Park’s hikers and equestrians. \nDialameh first came to appreciate nature as a child during hiking trips in the Alborz Mountains of his native Iran. As his love of hiking and nature developed\, so did his affinity for the United States of America. \n“I was intrigued by the volunteerism that built this country… people doing things instead of relying on the government.” In 1963 while visiting his brother in Pittsburgh\, Dialameh made the ultimate decision to immigrate and moved to the Los Angeles area. \n\n\nGetting There\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe hike to Amir’s Garden actually begins near one of Griffith Park’s larger picnic areas\, Mineral Well Picnic Area. Find the dirt service road heading west from the intersection of Griffith Park Drive and Mineral Wells Road. \nWalk straight through an immediate junction and follow the dirt road on a southwestern climb to Amir’s Garden. After a horseshoe bend in the road\, and a quarter mile from the start\, you will pass a water tower that is accompanied by broad views stretching beyond Griffith Park toward Glendale\, the Verdugo Mountains\, and San Gabriel Mountains. \n \nLooking back down the trail\nAfter less than half a mile\, the trail arrives at Amir’s Garden where you’ll discover a pocket of tall sycamores arcing over a mountainside of verdant plants including succulents like ice plant and jade. There are a few picnic tables at the entrance of Amir’s Garden and others hidden throughout. \n  \n \nAmir’s Garden\n\nStroll through a web of footpaths and recharge your batteries in this refreshing Griffith Park retreat. With extra effort\, you may continue up North Trail toward Mount Hollywood\, Mount Bell and other peaks in Griffith Park. Otherwise\, return the way you came for a satisfying 1-mile round trip hike. No fee or permit is required to hike to Amir’s Garden and dogs are welcome.\n\nTo get to the trailhead: Take the 5 Freeway to the Los Feliz Boulevard exit. Drive west on Los Feliz Boulevard to the first light and turn north on Crystal Springs Road. After 1.5 miles\, turn left on Griffith Park Drive and drive 1.2 miles to the intersection with Mineral Wells Road. Turn left onto Mineral Wells Road and park immediately in the spaces along the road. The trail to Amir’s Garden heads west from the intersection of Mineral Wells Road and Griffith Park Drive. \nTrailhead address: Mineral Wells Road & Griffith Park Drive\, Griffith Park\, Los Angeles\, CA 90027 \n\n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttp://www.amirsgarden.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
