SUMMARY:Train Rides in Torrance
DESCRIPTION:EVERY 1st SUNDAY & 3rd SATURDAY- Wilson Park\, Torrance\nSouthern California Live Steamers provides mini-train rides on public run days every first Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and every third Saturday of the month from noon to 3 p.m. All SCLS members are City of Torrance volunteers with annual fingerprint clearance and are not paid for their time expended on maintaining the trains and facility\, and providing the rides.Donations are appreciated. \n  \n \nIn 1987\, for the Torrance 75th anniversary event\, the City of Torrance asked SCLS if they could set up a small track on the back end of Wilson Park. At the time this was a vacant lot\, no trees and only weeds for vegetation. Considerable effort was expended by both the City and SCLS to prepare the area and lay the tracks necessary to run the trains. During the City’s 75th Anniversary Celebration in October 1987\, the free train rides were so well received by the public that the City sought to have SCLS run the trains on a regular basis. On May 11\, 1990\, the City and SCLS entered into a 25-year License Agreement allowing SCLS to provide free train rides at Wilson Park on a regular basis. A new home was found! \nANOTHER 25 YEARS \nThe mini-train rides have become a popular feature of Wilson Park. Originally\, free train rides were offered once a month on the first Sunday of each month. Today\, SCLS provides free train rides twice a month on the first Sunday and third Saturday of each month\, and on special occasions. The City and SCLS entered into another 25-year lease agreement thru May 11\, 2040. \nSouthern California Live Steamers\, Inc. operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization under IRS rules and is a registered California non-profit corporation. All of the income for the operation of SCLS is derived by donations from its members\, passengers and corporate sponsors\, and thru fundraisers. SCLS does not charge the passengers for rides on public run days\, though donations are accepted from our riders on public run days which is on the 1st Sunday and 3rd Saturday of each month. Funds received are used to pay SCLS expenses such as insurance\, maintenance costs\, facility upgrades\, fuel\, track repairs\, future track projects\, and other expenses. All welcome and admission and vehicle registration is free. Starbucks is closed at that hour so BYOC (Bring Your Own Coffee).\n\n \nCaffeine Cruisers Located in the parking lot of the Westgate Shopping Strip Mall. It is located between BIG 5\, DSW & Wells Fargo \nBut everyone seems to know each other.  And they’re all super-friendly.  As well as ready to talk cars well past the 10 AM cut-off. \nSo\, the location is a strip mall at the corner of Hawthorne and Artesia.  And it’s technically in Torrance.  But it’s right on the border of Redondo Beach. \nThere was a Starbucks in the strip mall. The Western Museum of Flight’s collection includes numerous Warbirds\, aircraft and target drones\, piston and jet aircraft engines\, aircraft components\, aircraft ejection seats\, World War II instruments\, aircrew accessories\, and an extensive model aircraft collection. Please visit us at www.wmof.com. \nWestern Museum of Flight\, is located at historic “Louis Zamperini Field”\, in Torrance. \n \n \nThe Western Museum of Flight (WMOF)\nis operated by the Southern California Historical Aviation Foundation. It houses not only historic aircraft\, many of which were built in Southern California\, but also has an extensive collection of historic photographs and blueprints. \n  \nThe WMOF is one of two museums that house the only surviving Jack Northrop flying wings. Considerable effort was expended by both the City and SCLS to prepare the area and lay the tracks necessary to run the trains. During the City’s 75th Anniversary Celebration in October 1987\, the free train rides were so well received by the public that the City sought to have SCLS run the trains on a regular basis. On May 11\, 1990\, the City and SCLS entered into a 25-year License Agreement allowing SCLS to provide free train rides at Wilson Park on a regular basis. Considerable effort was expended by both the City and SCLS to prepare the area and lay the tracks necessary to run the trains. During the City’s 75th Anniversary Celebration in October 1987\, the free train rides were so well received by the public that the City sought to have SCLS run the trains on a regular basis. On May 11\, 1990\, the City and SCLS entered into a 25-year License Agreement allowing SCLS to provide free train rides at Wilson Park on a regular basis. The Western Museum of Flight’s collection includes numerous Warbirds\, aircraft and target drones\, piston and jet aircraft engines\, aircraft components\, aircraft ejection seats\, World War II instruments\, aircrew accessories\, and an extensive model aircraft collection. It houses not only historic aircraft\, many of which were built in Southern California\, but also has an extensive collection of historic photographs and blueprints. \n  \nThe WMOF is one of two museums that house the only surviving Jack Northrop flying wings. The museum has several other rare aircraft among its collection\, including: \n  \n \nNorth American F-86Sabre Jet \n \nNorthrop YF-17 “Cobra” (Prototype #1) \n \nThe Northrop N-3PB World War II single engine seaplane built in 1940. It is located between BIG 5\, DSW & Wells Fargo \nBut everyone seems to know each other.  And they’re all super-friendly.  As well as ready to talk cars well past the 10 AM cut-off. \nSo\, the location is a strip mall at the corner of Hawthorne and Artesia.  And it’s technically in Torrance.  But it’s right on the border of Redondo Beach. \nThere was a Starbucks in the strip mall.
