Reliving life aboard a whaling ship and Melville’s soul-searching journey while the group huddled for warmth on the sand was a transformative experience. Tim realized the importance of learning outside of the traditional classroom and founded the Venice Oceanarium\, a Museum Without Walls. \n \nThis concept of blending the arts and sciences is the core of our programming. We believe that our integrative curriculum inspires kids of all ages to be stewards of our precious oceans. \nOver the years we’ve expanded our outreach to include our highly anticipated annual grunion party\, weekly Marine Biology pop-up labs at the end of the Venice Pier\, classes at local schools and youth centers\, tidepool talks\, wetland walks\, and other excursions. \nVenice Beach: An Urban Coastal Park\n \nVenice Beach is a wonderful juxtaposition of urban life and natural wonder. There’s a secret reef\, and beautiful wetlands\, and on a clear day\, you can see Malibu and Catalina Island. \nMillions of locals and visitors enjoy our beaches. Few stop to really appreciate the rare treasures it has to offer. Chace Park \nwas first opened in 1972 at 13650 Mindanao Way in Marina del Rey\, California and was named in honor of the Father of the Marina and long-time Los Angeles County Supervisor\, Burton W. Chace.  The Park hours are from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm 7 days a week while the Office hours are from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm 7 days a week. Burton W. Chace Park offers multi-purpose rooms\, picnic tables\, barbecues\, pergolas\, picnic shelters\, outdoor programs\, great harbor viewing areas\, guest docks\, and is host to numerous year-round events. Admission is free. The Marina del Rey water bus offers rides around the Marina for $1.00. There are always a number of Events going on in the Park throughout the year\, including the Discover Marina del Rey Day where you can meet the Chace Family the first Sunday of each October. \n \nThe Park has a Community Room for which reservations may be made for your community event and great outdoor facilities. Chace Park: 10 acres of lush lawn and trees extend into the Marina’s main channel offering magnificent boat and ocean vistas. Built-in barbecue grills and tables invite picnicing. The free outdoor summer concerts run from July through September each year on Thursday and Saturday nights. \nIf you are into cycling\, the Park is located on the South Bay Bicycle Trail which spans from Will Rogers State Beach to the north in Pacific Palisades to Torrance County Beach in the South at the base of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the Park is located about halfway between the two points making it an ideal stop along the way. \nBurton W. Chace Park has been the site of many weddings\, scenes on television shows including the OC\, and is home to a wealth of community events throughout the year. SUMMARY:Train Rides in Torrance
DESCRIPTION:EVERY 1st SUNDAY & 3rd SATURDAY- Wilson Park\, Torrance\nSouthern California Live Steamers provides mini-train rides on public run days every first Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and every third Saturday of the month from noon to 3 p.m. All SCLS members are City of Torrance volunteers with annual fingerprint clearance and are not paid for their time expended on maintaining the trains and facility\, and providing the rides.Donations are appreciated. \n  \n \nIn 1987\, for the Torrance 75th anniversary event\, the City of Torrance asked SCLS if they could set up a small track on the back end of Wilson Park. At the time this was a vacant lot\, no trees and only weeds for vegetation. Considerable effort was expended by both the City and SCLS to prepare the area and lay the tracks necessary to run the trains. During the City’s 75th Anniversary Celebration in October 1987\, the free train rides were so well received by the public that the City sought to have SCLS run the trains on a regular basis. On May 11\, 1990\, the City and SCLS entered into a 25-year License Agreement allowing SCLS to provide free train rides at Wilson Park on a regular basis. A new home was found! \nANOTHER 25 YEARS \nThe mini-train rides have become a popular feature of Wilson Park. Originally\, free train rides were offered once a month on the first Sunday of each month. Today\, SCLS provides free train rides twice a month on the first Sunday and third Saturday of each month\, and on special occasions. The City and SCLS entered into another 25-year lease agreement thru May 11\, 2040. \nSouthern California Live Steamers\, Inc. operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization under IRS rules and is a registered California non-profit corporation. All of the income for the operation of SCLS is derived by donations from its members\, passengers and corporate sponsors\, and thru fundraisers. SCLS does not charge the passengers for rides on public run days\, though donations are accepted from our riders on public run days which is on the 1st Sunday and 3rd Saturday of each month. Funds received are used to pay SCLS expenses such as insurance\, maintenance costs\, facility upgrades\, fuel\, track repairs\, future track projects\, and other expenses. Come and experience Burke Heritage Park\, a treasured slice of the past that’s waiting to be discovered. \n \nThe Xeriscape Garden\nis located adjacent to the Alhambra Historical Society Museum. Admission is free. \n \n  \n \n  \nBurke Heritage Park\n \n\n\n‍History & Mission of the Alhambra Historical Society\nIn 1966 the Alhambra Historical Society Inc was established with the objective to encourage and promote the research and study of history and its relationship to the population and the development of Alhambra and the surrounding San Gabriel Valley. As an archival and educational organization collect\, classify\, and disseminate historical data and facts. \nThe collection of artifacts is housed in the eleven-room museum\, located at 1550 W Alhambra Road (corner of Alhambra Road and Bushnell Avenue). A vast collection\, including the Alhambra Post Advocate\, Alhambra Polk city directories from 1905 to 1964\, telephone directories from 1882 to 2011\, Alhambra High School yearbooks from 1912\, and much more. \nBeginning in July 2022\, museum hours are from 1 pm to 4 pm every first and third Saturday of each month or by appointment at 626-300-8845. Benjamin Wilson\, who owned 40\,000 acres in three counties\, gave about 300 acres of his property in Alhambra\, divided into five and ten-acre lots. The name Alhambra came from Wilson’s daughters and cousins who were reading “Tales of the Alhambra” by Washington Irving. With the growth of the area\, Alhambra was incorporated in 1903. \nAlhambra Historical Society Collection\nThe museum’s vast collection includes many articles used in day-to-day lives: \n\nMore than 400 envelopes of photos from as early as 1880\nTelephone directories from 1882 to 2011\nAlhambra Post Advocate Morgue from 1934 to 1964\nAlhambra Polk City directories from 1905 to 1964\nAlhambra High School Yearbooks from 1912\nArtist Colony (Norman Rockwell\, Florence Upson Young\, Eli Harvey\, Sam Hyde Harris\, and more)\nTown of Dolgeville (became part of Alhambra)\nAnd much\, much more!\n\nMeetings & Events\nThere are five board meetings held at the Museum\, and three membership meetings with guest speakers and society’s business held at the Masonic Lodge at 9 West Woodward.
