Founded in 1942 by James Farmer and Quakers\, CORE launched an aggressive attack on segregation during World War II. Quickly rising to prominence\, CORE became one of the “Big Three” organizations that reshaped America in the 20th century. \nWhile all three played vital roles\, CORE distinguished itself through its pioneering use of nonviolent tactics. They initiated the Freedom Rides and sit-ins of the 1940s and 50s\, even inspiring Dr. King’s adoption of non-violence in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. CORE’s vanguard\, including Schwerner\, Goodman\, Chaney\, and Liuzzo\, bravely faced arrests\, beatings\, and even death while registering voters in the 1950s and 60s. \nMeanwhile\, CORE-CA championed equality in the North\, tackling fair housing\, employment\, and education issues. We played a key role in establishing federal and state agencies for these causes\, but remain vigilant\, monitoring their effectiveness spearheading the fight against police abuse\, and securing education as a fundamental right for our youth. \nBeyond these ongoing efforts\, CORE-CA tackles the rising tensions between Black and Hispanic youth through research and community engagement. Additionally\, we prioritize building self-esteem and academic skills among African American students facing increasing barriers to higher education and career opportunities.
