One of the owners described it as \n“a pre-gentrified war zone of the Warehouse District”.\n \nThe space\, in a former garment factory\, is the brainchild of principals Alex Alereza\, Powell\, and Travis Richter. L.A.’s premier party-throwers\, the Brownies and Lemonade crew\, christened the venue late last year\, and now 1720’s calendar is quickly filling up with a variety of genres from the underground to the mainstream. \n \n \nSleekly designed (by Brant Ritter) but still keeping a warehouse feel\, the 700-capacity venue comes with niceties that belie its neighborhood: There’s a state-of-the-art L’Acoustics sound system\, a triptych by artist Nick Knudson on the wall and au courant bar (Matthew Blackburn) and kitchen (Felix Barron) menus. \n \nThe space and its location reflect the experiences of the ownership triumvirate — thirtysomething musicians who have plied their trade in metal bands such as the Human Abstract\, From First to Last\, and Nekrogoblikon. Richter explains that the idea of a venue first arose when the trio started throwing parties (including one for Skrillex) in an office space occupied by Nekrogoblikon’s record label. “From there\,” he says\, “we went on a mission to build a fully fleshed-out music venue in a warehouse. \n \n1720 was no overnight project. Rehabbing the warehouse took well over a year\, with the trio slowly clearing the predictable hurdles of “construction and permitting [and] making sure everything was really legit\,” Richter says. “We all grew up with parents who owned businesses\, so we had shoulders to lean on and ask questions. But we’ve been to so many events and thrown concerts and done headline tours\, so the rigmarole of running a venue is second nature to us. But learning about construction and code compliance was all new. Their continuous energetic\, driven show resulted in a bumper-to-bumper dance floor as they performed to a packed house of diverse\, die-hard hipster fans. \n \n\nAfter touring for years as a part of Portland’s iconic touring band The Lower 48\, cousins Ben Braden and Nick Sadler formed their indie-electro duo Strange Hotels in early 2018\, and within weeks of forming the duo\, they had the opportunity to open for Billie Eilish and Finneas at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland. Their songs have also been featured in several TV shows including Shameless\, Viceʼs King Of The Road\, and Conan O’Brien’s Needs a Friend.  They have described Strange Hotels as the most collaborative project they have been a part of and are a sonic blend of dance\, R&B\, vintage pop\, and indie rock.  They have taken a very DIY approach to record their songs\, recording and producing their music solely on iPads.  This allowed them to record in Airbnb’s and apartment studios on the road and\, as a result\, they released their debut and well-received EP Mixtape in January of 2018. They moved to Los Angles in 2019 and booked a residency at their favorite club\, booked other gigs\, and wrote a new batch of songs\, releasing their second EP\, Mixtape II\, at the end of 2019.  Going through some hard times during the pandemic and shutdowns in the music industry\, with things having opened back up\, they have been staying busy!   They recently released their latest single “Teen Dream Fantasy”\, a dreamy hit that strikes a chord of nostalgia with uplifting and energetic production\, captivating synth work\, and a stellar groove\, produced by The Strokes’ producer Gordon Raphael. \n\n \n1611 North El Centro Avenue\, Los Angeles\, CA 90028 \n \nDavid Wayne Houston\, father to Mark and Jonnie Houston\, was a blue-collar pool shark who enjoyed late nights in his garage building and fixing things–some of the brothers’ best memories. We invested more time in learning about the process\, fabricated custom brewing equipment and experimented with new recipes while tweaking them to make them our own.After serving samples of our homemade brews and getting positive feedback\, we began talking of doing it legit and opening up a brewery!  Given our Valley roots and the fact our beer was brewed out of a garage in Sylmar\, CA\, we decided 818 Brewing was the perfect name and we filed our paperwork in October 2014 for our new venture. \nWhat we’ve enjoyed the most along our journey is the sense of community within the craft brew scene. This was likely in the 1950s or ‘60s\, according to one bartender. It was also formerly known as Donna’s Red Carpet and Robin’s Roost. The notoriously heartbroken late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith used to frequent the bar\, which makes sense because to this day after a given hour (around 10 p.m.) the craggy\, old regulars are replaced with a consciously disheveled crowd of musicians and artists. \n \nPlaces like the Roost are quickly becoming extinct in Los Angeles. The counterculture lifestyle as defined by the modern hipster is morphing into the mainstream\, as is its habit of appropriating places\, fashions and art once considered marginal by the masses. One day someone will buy the Roost and turn it into a fancy simulacrum of itself and you’ll be sad that you didn’t know it back when. \n \nMixed drinks are strong and cheap here\, and something in the air at the Roost (maybe the smell of popcorn mixed with a legacy of stale smoke) makes a simple gin and tonic or vodka soda taste like the stuff of gods.
