Each presenter focuses on a different topic\, including theories on dinosaur behavior\, extinction\, adaptation\, and the relationship between birds and dinosaurs. Please note these are not small hand puppets. The museum’s puppets are very large\, realistic interpretations of wild animals. Please prepare small children accordingly. The garden was designed by landscape architect Dr. Takeo Uesugi and received the National Landscape Award in 1981\, the nation’s highest award for environmental improvement and community beautification. Most recently\, the James Irvine Japanese Garden underwent a major restoration with the purpose of creating a revitalized green space in downtown Los Angeles and sharing the aesthetics of Japanese culture with the community. The James Irvine Garden has served the community\, for nearly three decades\, by providing a tranquil and elegant departure from the urban landscape. Unique to automobile museums\, each car on display is attentively serviced and maintained to remain as drivable as when the vehicle originally rolled off the showroom floor. On view are various Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance winners and cars once owned by movie stars\, royalty and other notable personalities. \n  \n\nBuilding ONE: The Nethercutt Museum FREE!\nThe entire collection is housed in two beautifully appointed exhibit facilities located just north of Los Angeles. Housed in the Museum is the Nethercutt Automotive Research Library and Archives \, one of the world’s top automotive research facilities. Just steps outside the Museum are a resplendently restored steam locomotive and railcar. \nOpened in 1971\, The Nethercutt Collection is a not-for-profit educational institution and a resource for automobile enthusiasts\, historians\, students and scholars. It is open to the public at no charge. The Nethercutt Museum showcases more than 130 of the world’s greatest antique\, vintage\, classic and special interest automobiles including many top winners of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. \n\n\n  \n \nTHE ANTIQUE ERA (1890s – 1915)\nInnovation and experimentation were at the heart of this era and provided the catalyst for the automobiles’ development. By the late-19th century\, “horseless carriages” were being built by small groups of artisans\, craftsmen and engineers on a small scale\, with many taking characteristics from the wagons they were replacing. \n\n\nTHE VINTAGE ERA (1916 – 1924)\nA class of cars that came to be known today as “vintage\,” fits in between the expensive coach built brands that became classics and the inexpensive models represented by Ford\, Chevrolet and Dodge. These cars sold for between $500 and $2\,000. They had basic engineering features but had better cosmetic appointments such as visors\, cigar lighters and wool broadcloth interiors. \n  \n \nTHE CLASSIC ERA (1925 – 1948)\nThis era elevated the common automobile to a status symbol\, as evidenced by their cost. When common vehicles sold for $400 to about $1\,200\, the classic car had a price tag of $2\,000 to $20\,000. \n  \n\nTHE POST-WAR ERA (1945 – 1970s)\nThroughout the 1950s\, engine power and vehicle speeds rose\, designs became better integrated and more stylized\, and cars grew more popular across the world. The auto market slightly shifted in the 1960s\, causing Detroit to worry about foreign competition. European makers adopted even greater technology and Japan appeared as a serious car-producing nation. \n  \n \nTHE MUSEUM LOCOMOTIVE & PRIVATE CAR\n1937 Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson Locomotive #2839: \n#2839 was built by Montreal Locomotive Works and is resplendent in its Royal maroon\, gold leaf\, gloss black and brushed stainless steel livery\, is a testament to the grand era of steam locomotive engineering. The Hudson type is a 4-6-4 wheel arrangement and was a high-speed passenger locomotive with a top speed of 90 mph. \n1912 Pullman Private Car #100 California: \nCustom built by Pullman in Chicago\, Illinois for Clara Baldwin Stocker the eldest Daughter of local Pioneer “Lucky” Baldwin. This railcar has been beautifully restored back to 1912 \nBuilding TWO: The Nethercutt Collection: Available by Tour Only  advanced reservations are required- $10\n  \n \nLower Salon\n\nThe Lower Salon is where guests assemble to start the guided tour. The salon is a microcosm of the entire collection. There are about 25 automobiles dating from the early 1900’s up till the late 1940’s. Also in display are nickelodeons\, music boxes\, David Winter Cottages\, Dolls\, Coins\, and crystal figurines. \n  \n\n \nGrand Salon\n\nMarble columns\, crystal chandeliers\, painted ceilings all make up this beautiful Grand Salon Showroom of the 1910’s\, 20 and 30s. On display are approx. 30 of the finest automoblies of that era. Duesenbergs\, Cadillacs\, Isotta-Fraschini\, Delahaye\, Minvera\, Renault\, Maybach\, many other European and American built automoblies. \n  \n\n \nAutomobile Collectibles and Antiques\n\nOn the third floor is a large assortment of Radiator Hood Ornaments “Mascots”\, including Lalique Crystal Mascots and 18th & 19th Century French Furniture \n  \n \nInstruments\n\nThis area displays a world-class collection of automated mechanical instruments including musical repeat striking watches\, Swiss bird boxes\, cylinder and disc music boxes\, and grand pianos. In its original sense\, the term “museum” meant a spot dedicated to the muses – “a place where man’s mind could attain a mood of aloofness above everyday affairs.” By far the most important museum of antiquity was the great institution at Alexandria founded by Ptolemy Philadelphus in the third century before Christ\, (an endeavor supported by a grant from the treasury). And no treatment of the museum would be complete without mention of Noah’s Ark in which we find the complete Museum of Natural History the world has ever seen. \nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology traces its origins to this period when many of the essential collections of today were beginning to take form. DESCRIPTION:EVERYDAY IS FREE DAY in Griffith Park\nTake a trip back in time at Travel Town Museum in Griffith Park! You will have a fun learning experience as you tour INSIDE the historic train cars at the park.\n \n  \nTravel Town Museum is “an outdoor museum which features an impressive collection of \nLocomotives\nFreight Cars\nCabooses\n \nand passenger cars dating back to the 1800s. Travel Town is located in the northwest corner of Los Angeles\, California’s Griffith Park. The museum’s collection primary focuses on the history of railroad transportation in the western United States from 1880 to the 1930s is\, with an emphasis on Southern California and the Los Angeles area. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nFREE Docent Tours are held the 2nd Saturdays of the month\nfrom 11:00 am until 3:00 pm.\nGroup tours are available by reservation. For information call 323-668-0104\, ext. 12.\n\n \n  \n \nFor a different view of Travel Town\, ride the scale train which circles the perimeter of the museum for a nominal charge ($2.75 each). The ride travels around the museum twice. \n(16″ gauge) are: \nThe Courage – 2-6-0 Mogul\nA 2-6-0 mogul built by Gerry Bowden in 1993. Sister locomotive to the Stanley Diamond. \nThis locomotive and its brother unit the Stanley Diamond were built in Oregon in 1993 to a design by our chief engineer\, Gene Gustavson. They are modeled after the narrow gauge locomotives that worked the timber and mining areas of the West during the early part of the century. This unit has identical power as the Colonel Griffith. \n \n  \nhe 1986 – Diesel Switcher\nDiesel switcher built by Gerry Bowden in 1986. \nA classic yard goat design\, this locomotive is modeled after the EMD series of yard switchers. It is fitting that this is our heaviest and most powerful locomotive. \n \n  \nPullman style – Six seat coaches\nsix seat coaches built by George Reddington in 1956 for Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch Special train. \nSimilar to the Pullman style coaches at GPS but longer\, steel covers were added to these coaches in 1989 because Travel Town did not have a loading platform cover to protect the passenger seats from the sun. These coaches originally were a part of a set with a steam locomotive. The locomotive burned out its boiler and was sold in \n \n  \nThis railroad is one of three miniature railway train rides within Griffith Park. The others are the 18 1⁄2 in (470 mm) gauge Griffith Park & Southern Railroad and the 7 1⁄2 in (190.5 mm) gauge miniature railway at the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum. The latter is independently operated. \nBe sure to also  visit during the holiday season to take advantage of the Holiday Light Festival Train Ride\, when the Museum is festively decorated and tens of thousands of lights transform the area into a magical wonderland.
