Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. No special clothing is required\, and participants are welcome to join for five minutes or enjoy the entire 30 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese free weekly drop-in sessions usually take place in the Hammer’s Billy Wilder Theater but are now offered live online via Zoom. \nMindful Awareness Meditation is provided by UCLA & The Hammer Museum\n  \nff \n\nSessions are led by Diana Winston and other instructors from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. You will have a fun learning experience as you tour INSIDE the historic train cars at the park.\n \n  \nTravel Town Museum is “an outdoor museum which features an impressive collection of \nLocomotives\nFreight Cars\nCabooses\n \nand passenger cars dating back to the 1800s. Travel Town is located in the northwest corner of Los Angeles\, California’s Griffith Park. The museum’s collection primary focuses on the history of railroad transportation in the western United States from 1880 to the 1930s is\, with an emphasis on Southern California and the Los Angeles area. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nFREE Docent Tours are held the 2nd Saturdays of the month\nfrom 11:00 am until 3:00 pm.\nGroup tours are available by reservation. For information call 323-668-0104\, ext. 12.\n\n \n  \n \nFor a different view of Travel Town\, ride the scale train which circles the perimeter of the museum for a nominal charge ($2.75 each). The ride travels around the museum twice. \n(16″ gauge) are: \nThe Courage – 2-6-0 Mogul\nA 2-6-0 mogul built by Gerry Bowden in 1993. Sister locomotive to the Stanley Diamond. \nThis locomotive and its brother unit the Stanley Diamond were built in Oregon in 1993 to a design by our chief engineer\, Gene Gustavson. They are modeled after the narrow gauge locomotives that worked the timber and mining areas of the West during the early part of the century. This unit has identical power as the Colonel Griffith. \n \n  \nhe 1986 – Diesel Switcher\nDiesel switcher built by Gerry Bowden in 1986. \nA classic yard goat design\, this locomotive is modeled after the EMD series of yard switchers. It is fitting that this is our heaviest and most powerful locomotive. \n \n  \nPullman style – Six seat coaches\nsix seat coaches built by George Reddington in 1956 for Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch Special train. \nSimilar to the Pullman style coaches at GPS but longer\, steel covers were added to these coaches in 1989 because Travel Town did not have a loading platform cover to protect the passenger seats from the sun. These coaches originally were a part of a set with a steam locomotive. The locomotive burned out its boiler and was sold in \n \n  \nThis railroad is one of three miniature railway train rides within Griffith Park. The others are the 18 1⁄2 in (470 mm) gauge Griffith Park & Southern Railroad and the 7 1⁄2 in (190.5 mm) gauge miniature railway at the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum. The latter is independently operated. \nBe sure to also  visit during the holiday season to take advantage of the Holiday Light Festival Train Ride\, when the Museum is festively decorated and tens of thousands of lights transform the area into a magical wonderland.
