SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. For highlights of the Meteorite Gallery please click here. \n  \n  \n \n  \nWe are eager to add meteorites to the UCLA collection. If you have a meteorite collection and are interested in considering a donation\, we would like to hear from you. You can contact us here. \n \nLOCATION\nThe Meteorite Gallery is located in room 3697 of the Geology Building on the UCLA campus. \n595 Charles E. The Forest Lawn Museum first opened in 1952 and is located adjacent to the Hall of Crucifixion-Resurrection at Forest Lawn – Glendale.  Forest Lawn’s founder\, Dr. Hubert Eaton\, wrote in his Builder’s Creed that our park should be “a place where artists study and sketch; where school teachers bring happy children to see the things they read of in books.” In that spirit\, the Forest Lawn Museum displays a permanent collection\, as well as world-class rotating exhibits. With engaging special exhibits and free educational and artistic activities\, there is always something new to experience. \n \nForest Lawn Museum is located within Forest Lawn-Glendale (1712 S. On May 2\, 2020\, we recognize the centennial of this monumental building. Construction began in 1917 and only one level was complete at the dedication ceremony. The building now has 11 terraces\, dozens of sculptures\, and more than 100 stained glass windows. It has endured through the Great Depression\, World War II\, and into the 21st century. DESCRIPTION:California African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair\nFREE! TUES – SUNDAY- Exposition Park\nThe California African American Museum (CAAM) focuses on enrichment and education on the cultural heritage and history of African Americans with a focus on California and western United States. \nAdmission is free to all visitors. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \nCalifornia African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair\n  \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \n  \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \n \n  \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \nCalifornia African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair\nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. Each quarter\, curators review the current holdings and decide as a committee on future acquisitions. We view our collection as a living body — constantly evolving\, growing\, and reflecting the world in which we live. \n \n  \nSome examples of CAAM’s collection include the Walter Burrell Collection of audio recordings of Burrell’s interviews with African American celebrities\, broadcast by a local radio station in the early 1970s; the oral histories of Celes King\, who was both a local civil rights activist as well as a former Tuskegee airman; and selections from the collection of visual artist John Outterbridge. \n  \n \nHours\nTuesdays – Saturdays: 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.\nSundays: 11:00 a.m.-5:00p.m.\nMondays: Closed \nCalifornia African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncaamuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Nethercutt Museum
DESCRIPTION:FREE EVERY THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Sylmar\n\n\nFounder JB Nethercutt spent a lifetime establishing this collection of historic importance. Unique to automobile museums\, each car on display is attentively serviced and maintained to remain as drivable as when the vehicle originally rolled off the showroom floor. On view are various Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance winners and cars once owned by movie stars\, royalty and other notable personalities. \n  \n\nBuilding ONE: The Nethercutt Museum FREE!\nThe entire collection is housed in two beautifully appointed exhibit facilities located just north of Los Angeles. Housed in the Museum is the Nethercutt Automotive Research Library and Archives \, one of the world’s top automotive research facilities. Just steps outside the Museum are a resplendently restored steam locomotive and railcar. \nOpened in 1971\, The Nethercutt Collection is a not-for-profit educational institution and a resource for automobile enthusiasts\, historians\, students and scholars. It is open to the public at no charge. The Nethercutt Museum showcases more than 130 of the world’s greatest antique\, vintage\, classic and special interest automobiles including many top winners of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. \n\n\n  \n \nTHE ANTIQUE ERA (1890s – 1915)\nInnovation and experimentation were at the heart of this era and provided the catalyst for the automobiles’ development. By the late-19th century\, “horseless carriages” were being built by small groups of artisans\, craftsmen and engineers on a small scale\, with many taking characteristics from the wagons they were replacing. \n\n\nTHE VINTAGE ERA (1916 – 1924)\nA class of cars that came to be known today as “vintage\,” fits in between the expensive coach built brands that became classics and the inexpensive models represented by Ford\, Chevrolet and Dodge. In its original sense\, the term “museum” meant a spot dedicated to the muses – “a place where man’s mind could attain a mood of aloofness above everyday affairs.” By far the most important museum of antiquity was the great institution at Alexandria founded by Ptolemy Philadelphus in the third century before Christ\, (an endeavor supported by a grant from the treasury). And no treatment of the museum would be complete without mention of Noah’s Ark in which we find the complete Museum of Natural History the world has ever seen. \nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology traces its origins to this period when many of the essential collections of today were beginning to take form. Many exhibits which we today have come to know as part of the Museum were\, in fact\, formally part of other less well-known collections and were subsequently consolidated into the single collection which we have come to know as The Museum of Jurassic Technology and thus configured\, received great public acclaim as well as much discussion in scholastic circles. \n\nHours\nMonday – Wednesday: Closed\nThursday – Friday : 2:00pm – 8:00pm\nSaturday – Sunday: 12:00pm – 6:00pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.mjt.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
