SUMMARY:LONG BEACH MUSEUM OF ART
DESCRIPTION:KIDS UNDER 12 FREE- Long Beach\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJawlensky and Kandinsky: The Milton Wichner Collection\nThrough October 2\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe most significant gift in the Museum’s history was a generous bequest of collector Milton Wichner in 1979. Wichner’s gift of 61 works by European Modernists changed the course of the Museum’s future\, expanding the collection from one of regional-focus\, to one enhanced by international perspectives. Wichner moved to Los Angeles from the East coast upon completing his law degree from Harvard University in 1936. Between the film industry\, the oil boom \,and an influx of Europeans fleeing Nazi Germany\, Los Angeles saw a period of tremendous growth\, accompanied by the convergence of different cultures and aesthetics. During this time\, Wichner met Galka Scheyer who represented a group of contemporary artists\, she named Blaue Vier (Blue Four): Alexej Jawlensky\, Vasily Kandinsky\, Lyonel Feininger\, and Paul Klee. This exhibition showcases the works of two of the Blue Four artists\, Alexej Jawlensky and Vasily Kandinsky\, curated from the Wichner Collection. The Milton Wichner Collection entrusted to the Museum\, lives on to perpetuate the memory of this benefactor\, and serve as a reflection of his passion and esteem for European abstraction. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGenie Shenk: Ring\nOngoing\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConstructed of folded building paper with internal armature\, Ring began as a study of spiral motion between concentric circles in 1989. Genie Shenk became interested in the spiral as a means of increment from one circle to another and found this relationship could be defined three-dimensionally with the intersection of two isometric circular forms. As the inner circle diminishes\, the outer increases\, until a point of equilibrium is reached. \nGenie Shenk\, Ring\, 1990-1999\, Tar paper\, Gift of the artist  2009.13.a-et \n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n\n\n2300 East Ocean Boulevard\, Long Beach\, CA 90803\n\n\n\nThe Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) was founded in 1950 as a municipal art center for the city of Long Beach. By the end of the 80s\, our Museum was formally organized under the State of California as a not-for-profit public benefit corporation. \nThe Association acquired\, and still maintains\, a space in the LACo Fire Department Headquarters in Los Angeles\, storage units at the Department’s Air facility in Pacoima\, and a large warehouse in South Gate. Around the year 2000\, the Association rented an old auto repair shop from the city of Bellflower\, CA. This facility became the first public face for the Association and allowed us to open to the public for the first time. \nIn July of 2018\, the City of Bellflower became a partner with the Association. The showcase Museum is located on the bottom floor of Bellflower’s MAYNE EVENTS CENTER. The auto body repair building was purchased by The Association the same year and now houses the Los Angeles County Fire Museum’s “The Shop”\, the place where all the hard restoration work is now performed. \nMISSION STATEMENT\n\nCelebrate the history of the American Fire Service and the contributions made to that history by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.\nDocument and present the evolution\, history\, and impact of fire-based Emergency Medical Services.\nAcquire\, preserve\, and present artifacts\, apparatus\, photographs\, and documents\, along with other materials\, which assist in the presentation of our history.\nRestore antique fire apparatus to accurately reflect their respective histories.\n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.lacountyfiremuseum.com/visit-us\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL EXHIBITION AT THE BROAD: MAY 21 – SEPTEMBER 25\, 2022\nFeaturing over twenty artists\, the special exhibition This Is Not America’s Flag spotlights the myriad ways artists explore the symbol of the flag of the United States of America\, underscoring its vast\, divergent\, and complex meanings. \nTitled after Alfredo Jaar’s iconic 1987 work\, A Logo for America\, This Is Not America’s Flag provides a critical discourse on the symbol’s meaning\, the complexity and contradictions of contemporary national identity\, and artists as active citizens. \nThe exhibition was developed conceptually in the summer of 2020 during the groundswell of activism for racial justice in the wake of the murders of George Floyd\, Ahmaud Arbery\, and Breonna Taylor and was inspired by two works in the Broad collection\, Flag (1967) by Jasper Johns and African-American Flag (1990) by David Hammons. \nThis Is Not America’s Flag presents works from over twenty artists including Laura Aguilar\, Nicole Eisenman\, Jeffrey Gibson\, Jaar\, and Johns\, as well as African-American Flag (1990) by Hammons acquired by The Broad in 2019 and America (2021) by Hank Willis Thomas\, acquired last year. The exhibition includes works that both embrace the flag as the signifier of the nation and its ideals and subvert it to express injustices and inequities woven into the fabric of the U.S.\, past\, and present. \n\nHighlighted Artwork\nAmerica\nHank Willis Thomas\n2021\nMixed media including US flags\n \n  \nAfrican-American Flag\n\nDavid Hammons\n\n\n1990\n\n\ndyed cotton\n\n\n59 x 92 1/4 in. SUMMARY:The Getty Summer Concerts Series- OFF THE 405
DESCRIPTION:SELECT SATURDAYS THIS SUMMER- The Getty Center\nThe Getty Center presents OFF THE 405\, the Getty Center’s annual outdoor summer concert series\, bringing some of today’s most exciting bands to the stage for a memorable experience amid stunning architecture and breathtaking sunset views.\n\n\nLos Retros\nDate: Saturday\, July 9\, 2022\nTime: DJ set at 6 p.m.; Performance at 7:30 p.m.\nLocation: Museum Courtyard\nAdmission: Free\, tickets required. Tickets available June 25\, 2022.\n\nLos Retros is a bedroom pop band helmed by Mauri Tapia\, a multi-instrumentalist from Oxnard\, CA. Making music since his early teens\, Mauri plays each instrument on his recordings and has grown a loyal fanbase via YouTube and Soundcloud\, as well as through local shows up and down the SoCal coast. Tracing his musical inspirations from both American and Latin American left-field pop and soft rock groups from the 1970s and 80s\, Los Retros pays homage to Chilean pop band Los Angeles Negros. Los Retros recently toured in support of Chicano Batman and has been hailed as one of “the most exciting new signees for influential Southern California label Stones Throw Records.” \nRead more: “Los Retros: Dreams of a Nostalgic Future\,” Remezcla. \nWatch: Los Retros – “Someone To Spend Time With” \n\n\nOther Performances Include:\n\nHand Habits\nDate: Saturday\, July 23\, 2022\nTime: DJ set at 6 p.m.; Performance at 7:30 p.m.\nLocation: Museum Courtyard\nAdmission: Free\, tickets required. Tickets available July 9\, 2022 \n\nHand Habits is the songwriting outlet of guitarist Meg Duffy. Their recent album\, Fun House\, wasn’t intended as a reaction to the pandemic but was the result of taking a difficult\, if much-needed\, moment of pause. Produced by Sasami Ashworth (SASAMI) and engineered by Kyle Thomas (King Tuff)\, its eleven tracks sparkle and surprise\, representing the turning of a corner\, a means of processing hardship and stepping into one’s own power. Meg has also toured as a guitarist with Sylvan Esso and recorded on albums for War on Drugs\, Weyes Blood\, William Tyler\, Fruit Bats\, and others\, and in 2020\, Meg joined Perfume Genius as a touring guitarist. \nRead more: “Inside Hand Habits’ Fun House\,” Fader Magazine. \nWatch: Hand Habits – “Aquamarine” \n\n  \n\nStanding on the Corner\nDate: Saturday\, August 27\, 2022\nTime: DJ set at 6 p.m.; Performance at 7:30 p.m.\nLocation: Museum Courtyard\nAdmission: Free\, tickets required. Tickets available 13\, 2022. \n\nThe New York collective Standing on the Corner often calls itself an “art ensemble\,” a moniker which helps outline its approach to music and performance\, while hinting at its creative roots and perspective. With composer\, conductor and co-founder Gio Escobar at the center of a constantly rotating band line-up that’s seldom the same for consecutive performances\, each of which might feature a radically different concept and repertoire\, SOTC moves freely yet decisively between jazz improvisations\, dub excursions\, garage-noise freak-outs and lo-fi hip-hop collage\, giving prescience to Hua Hsu’s observation that its music sounds like “field recordings from a vanishing city.” SOTC’s work is deeply wedded to this sense of place. Since they began operating in 2014\, its members\, predominantly Black and Caribbean with Escobar emphasizing his Nuyorican heritage\, have become key representatives of New York’s new inter-borough musical avant-garde\, part of a young creative Blackness vanguard. Just as the collective’s sound is in constant\, determined flux\, so are the mediums through which it’s presented: SOTC’s four albums-cum-mixtapes\, a couple of singles\, and occasional short-run films/video installations\, are as central to the group’s legend as its concerts and happenings\, which can take place in a club or DIY space\, at a museum or an art-house theater\, each carrying its own specificity of liberative intent. The constant in the group’s vision is a cultivation of changing aesthetics using the mindfulness of hip-hop natives\, making historical reappraisals through contemporary lenses\, and filtering both via the dignity of local community values. The reason Standing on the Corner has developed a seemingly wide cast of admirers—from underground jazz experimentalists and popular musicians\, to gallerists and curators—is the group’s clear illustration of these connections as a constant ingredient in the continuum of African Diasporic music. And a renewal of the idea that the “art ensemble” is the best way to get these ideas over. “Que Viva Puerto Rico Libre!” \nThis special iteration of the Off the 405 concert series celebrates Working Together: The Photographers of the Kamoinge Workshop\, an exhibition that chronicles the dynamic creative exchange between a collective of photographers that began operating in 1960’s New York City\, who fused the energy of jazz and improvisation into their stylistically untethered approach to representing the African American experience. \nRead more about Standing on the Corner: “Meet Standing on the Corner\, the Post-Genre Crew Whose Music Speaks a Secret Language\,” Pitchfork. \n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Saturday: 10:00am – 5:00pm\nSunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ngetty.edu/museum/programs/performances/offthe405.html\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The Venice Oceanarium
DESCRIPTION:SUNDAYS- Venice Beach Pier\nVenice Oceanarium EVERY SUNDAY\, 11am – 2pm. @ Venice Pier. A Museum without Walls teaches kids about Marine Biology & the Santa Monica Bay!  \nOur oceanographic display includes rare specimens\, shark jaws\, and historical artifacts. Be a Citizen Scientist and help us gather ocean data from our water testing kits. Observe grains of sand and seawater samples under our microscopes. Read ocean-inspired poetry\, draw\, and learn about the sea life just beneath the pier. We have new enlightening programs every week. \nThe pier juts 1000 feet out over the open sea\, with saltwater breezes and spectacular coastline views! Besides our marine specimens\, you’ll see migratory birds perched on the pilings\, dolphins\, interesting catches reeled in\, and local surfer species. \n \nThe Venice Oceanarium is a non-profit based in Venice Beach\, California. Just steps away from the world-famous Venice Boardwalk\, there are ecosystems teeming with wildlife waiting to be explored. Since 1995\, countless people have enjoyed our outdoor classrooms through hands-on learning. \nOUR MISSION is to ignite a passion for the abundance\, diversity\, and significance of the web of life in our ocean and its shores. The Venice Oceanarium emphasizes the powerful and enduring emotional and aesthetic influences of the oceans on human culture. \nOUR VISION is to build a permanent exhibit on the Venice Pier that educates and inspires visitors about the unique and wondrous life forms in our local ocean. \n\nAbout Venice Oceanarium\nBack in 1995 our founder\, Tim Rudnick\, organized a weekend-long marathon reading of Moby-Dick at the Venice Beach breakwater. Reliving life aboard a whaling ship and Melville’s soul-searching journey while the group huddled for warmth on the sand was a transformative experience. Tim realized the importance of learning outside of the traditional classroom and founded the Venice Oceanarium\, a Museum Without Walls. \n \nThis concept of blending the arts and sciences is the core of our programming. We believe that our integrative curriculum inspires kids of all ages to be stewards of our precious oceans. \nOver the years we’ve expanded our outreach to include our highly anticipated annual grunion party\, weekly Marine Biology pop-up labs at the end of the Venice Pier\, classes at local schools and youth centers\, tidepool talks\, wetland walks\, and other excursions. \nVenice Beach: An Urban Coastal Park\n \nVenice Beach is a wonderful juxtaposition of urban life and natural wonder. Just steps from the world-famous Venice Beach Boardwalk’s street artists and performers are miles of beautiful shoreline to explore. Wide sandy beaches\, crashing waves\, shells\, seaweed\, birds\, and other wildlife coexist with surfers\, sunbathers\, and sandcastles. \nThe tidepools at the Venice Beach Breakwater are teeming with wildlife (to be enjoyed with your eyes only) as the iconic and colorful Venice graffiti walls loom in the background. There’s a secret reef\, and beautiful wetlands\, and on a clear day\, you can see Malibu and Catalina Island. \nMillions of locals and visitors enjoy our beaches. Few stop to really appreciate the rare treasures it has to offer. Our mission is to excite\, engage and inspire kids of all ages to appreciate our unique urban coast. \nExperiential Learning\n \nThe Venice Oceanarium is a Museum Without Walls. Our programs combine science with the arts to encourage kids (of all ages) to appreciate the environment and therefore become stewards of our oceans. We believe that this integrative curriculum of poetry\, literature\, music\, drawing\, and performance arts teaches by experiencing the world around us on a more profound level than books and classrooms alone provide. \nWe design our events and activities to raise awareness of the natural wonders of Venice Beach. Join us on our learning expedition! \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.veniceoceanarium.org/programs\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. For highlights of the Meteorite Gallery please click here. \n  \n  \n \n  \nWe are eager to add meteorites to the UCLA collection. If you have a meteorite collection and are interested in considering a donation\, we would like to hear from you. You can contact us here. \n \nLOCATION\nThe Meteorite Gallery is located in room 3697 of the Geology Building on the UCLA campus. \n595 Charles E. DESCRIPTION:NOW ON VIEW- The Autry Museum\n\n\n\n\nThe Autry Museum of the American West wants to know\, “What makes Griffith Park special to you?”  In a city with such diversity as Los Angeles\, The Autry is reaching out to Angelenos in hopes to hear from as many people as possible.\n\n\n\n\n \nWhat makes Griffith Park special to you? For many Angelenos\, the name evokes a panorama of memories—from picnics\, hikes\, horses\, and softball games to the zoo\, observatory\, trains\, and\, of course\, the Autry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBut how much do you really know about Griffith Park? How did it come to be\, and what are its best-kept secrets? Join us as we explore stories about Griffith Park\, a landscape that we honor as Tongva/Gabrielino land and a public park for Los Angeles. \n  \n \n  \nTo celebrate Griffith Park’s 125th anniversary in 2021\, the Autry\, has opened a community-led exhibition. The Autry’s newest exhibition\, Investigating Griffith Park\, a hands-on space that invites visitors to share their stories\, experiences\, and input on what the anniversary celebration should include. \n \n  \nOne section of the current gallery asks\, “What is the park to you?” and invites visitors to write responses. The museum says that while the public’s notes may influence the final exhibition\, they’re also helping the museum plan future questions\, focus group topics\, and talk-back sessions with partner organizations. \n \n\n\n\nWhile the Autry designed the gallery as a way to gather feedback from the public\, it’s also a great introduction to what the park offers. Visitors will find historical artifacts and photos\, video clips of Griffith Park’s many movie appearances\, a kids’ play area\, and an oversized board game about P-22\, the beloved mountain lion. \nEven the area of the park where the Autry is located has a fascinating history. In addition to the upcoming anniversary exhibition\, the Autry’s long-term plan includes building a research archive around Griffith Park in order to make it easier for people to study the park and to spur further research. \n  \n\n\n\n\nTimeline:\nCurrently open in its first phase of development\, we welcome your feedback as we further transform one of the Autry’s core galleries into an experiential\, hands-on space. Through Investigating Griffith Park\, we are gathering input from hundreds of visitors and experts to reveal some of the many stories from the park’s 4\,000-plus acres. Keep watching this space for future updates\, and sign up for our Investigating Griffith Park email list here. \nPHASE I: DISCOVERY | 2018 \nPublic discussions\, hands-on activities\, and feedback loops helped us learn what you wanted to know about the park. \nPHASE II: IDEA TESTING | 2019–2020 \nWatch as the gallery further transforms based on community input. \nPHASE III: EXHIBITION FINALIZED  \nExperience the exhibition fully when phase III is completed in connection with the 125th anniversary of Griffith Park! \n\n\n  \n\n\n \nThe Autry Museum of the American West\, 4700 Western Heritage Way\, Griffith Park. SUMMARY:THE HAMMER MUSEUM
DESCRIPTION:FREE FOR GOOD! Westwood Village\nThe Hammer Museum champions the art and artists who challenge us to see the world in a new light\, to experience the unexpected\, to ignite our imaginations\, and inspire change. \n\nThe Hammer understands that art not only has the power to transport us through aesthetic experience but can also provide significant insight into some of the most pressing cultural\, political\, and social questions of our time. We share the unique and invaluable perspectives that artists have on the world around us. \nA vibrant intellectual and creative nexus\, the Hammer is fueled by dynamic exhibitions and programs—including lectures\, symposia\, film series\, readings\, and musical performances—that spark meaningful encounters with art and ideas. \nAnd through our unwavering commitment to free admission and free public programs\, the Hammer is open for all and FREE FOR GOOD.\n\n \n  \n\nA BIGGER\, BETTER HAMMER MUSEUM\n\nIf oil magnate Armand Hammer were alive today\, he might marvel that the museum he launched in Westwood before his death in 1990 has evolved into one of the most forward-focused art institutions in Los Angeles. After all\, the museum was originally designed to house his fine collection of old-master paintings and drawings\, as well as works on paper by Honoré Daumier and his 19th-century contemporaries. \n\n\n\n\n\nBut in the ensuing decades\, as the art world has continued to evolve\, so has Los Angeles — and so has the Hammer Museum\, which is now a part of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. In 1994\, UCLA assumed management and operations of the museum\, and the Hammer kept its original purpose but also expanded its mission. Today\, the Hammer has a wide reputation for innovation and for showcasing new artists. \n  \n\nNew Contemporary Gallery\n\n  \n“L.A. has become a hotbed of contemporary art and artists\,” says Ann Philbin\, the museum’s director since 1999\, “and the Hammer has become a premier institution where they are shown.” \n  \n\n\n4th-Floor-Offices\n\n  \nUnder Philbin’s leadership\, the museum has expanded its collections and programs\, including establishing the Hammer Projects series of exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national and international emerging artists. It also launched the Made in L.A. biennial\, now in its fourth edition. Through these and other innovations\, the Hammer has quadrupled its attendance to about 250\,000 a year. \n  \nLindbrook Terrace\n  \nMeanwhile\, Occidental Petroleum\, which occupied the adjoining building\, relocated to Houston\, Texas. So the Hammer has begun a major\, multiyear expansion that will take the museum far into the 21st century. \nEarlier this year\, the Hammer announced a $180 million capital campaign. Almost half of those funds will be used to expand gallery and other public spaces\, while the rest will go toward exhibitions\, programming and an endowment. The museum has already raised more than $130 million\, including $30 million from L.A. philanthropists Lynda and Stewart ’59\, J.D. ’62 Resnick and $20 million from Hammer board chair Marcy Carsey. \n  \n  \nAnnex\n  \nThe renovations and additions being designed by Michael Maltzan Architecture\, who was commissioned in 2000 to create the museum’s 2003 master plan\, include: \n• A newly designed entrance at Wilshire and Westwood boulevards to maximize the museum’s visual presence at one of the nation’s busiest intersections. In the coming years\, the museum will also benefit from a planned Metro Purple Line station across Wilshire. \n• More than 10\,000 square feet of additional exhibition space for contemporary art. \n• New permanent collection galleries and a study room for the Grunwald Center Collection. \n• 20\,000 square feet of enhanced public spaces\, including a new restaurant. \n• A new and more accessible Hammer Store. \n  \n  \n2nd Floor B Side\n  \nIn all\, the expansion will provide 60 percent more gallery space for exhibitions. The museum will remain open during construction\, and admission will continue to be free. “We’re accessible to everyone\, and that keeps people coming back\,” Philbin says. “L.A. has been growing as one of the world’s most exciting cultural creative communities\, and the museum has grown alongside it.” \n  \n\n  \nBookstore\nHISTORY OF THE HAMMER MUSEUM\nThe Hammer Museum opened to the public in November 1990. Founded by Dr. Armand Hammer\, former Chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corporation\, the Museum was designed by architect Edward Larrabee Barnes. Financed by Occidental\, the Museum was built adjacent to the Corporation’s international headquarters in Westwood. At that time\, the Museum featured galleries for Dr. Hammer’s collections — old master paintings and drawings\, and a collection of works on paper by Honore Daumier and his contemporaries — as well as galleries for traveling exhibitions. Dr. Hammer passed away in December 1990\, three weeks after the opening of the Museum leaving many spaces unfinished. \nIn 1992\, the Museum began negotiations with its neighbor\, University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, to assume the management and operations of the institution. In April 1994\, the partnership with UCLA was finalized and the following year the University relocated its collections and the staff of the Wight Art Gallery and the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts to the Hammer. The Museum also assumed responsibility for the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden\, located at the north end of the UCLA campus. \nHenry Hopkins\, then director of the Wight gallery and professor in the Department of Art\, became director of the Museum until his retirement in 1998. In 1999 Ann Philbin was named director and has developed a strong and original institutional identity and built a national and international reputation for thematic contemporary exhibitions\, scholarly historical exhibitions\, and contemporary artists’ projects. During her tenure the Hammer has formed a Hammer Contemporary Collection which now holds over 2\,000 artworks. In addition\, Philbin has overseen substantial renovations to the museum’s building\, including the completion of the 300-seat Billy Wilder Theater and museum café. With Philbin’s direction\, the museum instituted the internationally acclaimed Hammer Projects\, a series of more than one hundred contemporary exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national\, and international emerging artists. Philbin also created a series of dynamic public programs which are core to the Hammer’s identity and regularly feature many of the most influential authors\, artists\, and creative thinkers of our time. \n \n\nHours\nThe museum is open every day\, except Mondays\, July 4\, Thanksgiving\, Christmas\, and New Year’s Day. \nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Friday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nSaturday & Sunday: 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. \nAdmission to all exhibitions and public programs is free and open to the public. Free admission to the Hammer Museum is made possible through the generosity of Erika J Glazer and Brenda R. Potter. \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhammer.ucla.edu\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

The museum’s mission is to further intercultural understanding through the arts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. \nThe museum’s historic building has served as a center for art\, culture\, and learning in Pasadena since its construction in 1924 by pioneering collector and entrepreneur Grace Nicholson (1877-1948) as her residence\, galleries\, and Treasure House/emporium. Ms. Nicholson’s championing of Asian art early in the century set the tone for much of the Pasadena community’s arts-related activities during the ensuing decades. The building also served as the site of the Pasadena Art Museum\, which was renowned for its groundbreaking exhibitions of contemporary art. Pacific Asia Museum combined the spirits of both its predecessors in its focus on the classic and contemporary arts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. In 2013\, the University of Southern California partnered with the museum to form USC Pacific Asia Museum. SUMMARY:Los Angeles Maritime Museum
DESCRIPTION:WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY – San Pedro\nDiscover the history of the Port of Los Angeles on land or at sea! Welcome to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum where our hardworking harbor tug ANGELS GATE provides educational tours while our historic museum building houses fascinating exhibits\, a research library\, a ham radio station\, and a gift shop. \nOPEN EVERY WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY FROM 12:00 pm TO 5:00 pm\nFREE TO CHILDREN AGES 12 AND UNDER\n\n\n\nBerth 84\, Foot of 6th St.\, San Pedro\, CA 90731 \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum is housed in the former Municipal Ferry Terminal building\, located on the main channel of the Los Angeles Harbor. It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84\, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). \nThe ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. It is the largest maritime museum on the West Coast. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by Modernist architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. \n\nEXHIBITS\nANGELS GATE TUGBOAT\n \nThe tugboat ANGELS GATE arrived at the Museum in 1992\, after almost 50 years of providing general towing services and goodwill tours for the Port of Los Angeles. \nTĀMINARU\n \nIn the early 20th century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish. Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally from the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor. \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara\, organized by Tara Fansler\, and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Japan Business Association with the assistance of the Terminal Islanders Club. \nPOSEIDON MODEL\n \nThere is a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS POSEIDON was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure”. \nFifteen men built the model over a period of three months. POSEIDON is 21 .5 feet long and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS QUEEN MARY\, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach\, California. \nNAVY HALL\n \nThe Museum building\, built-in 1941\, was originally used as a ferry terminal\, transporting people and automobiles between San Pedro and Terminal Island. The area of the first floor where cars would enter and exit is now used as the Navy Hall. \nANGELS GATE LIGHT\n \nThe Angels Gate Lighthouse (officially known as Los Angeles Harbor Light) has marked the entrance of Los Angeles Harbor through times of war and peace\, and even survived a tidal wave! The tower itself has undergone many changes through the years. The distinctive green flash of the Angels Gate Lighthouse remains a welcoming beacon to professional mariners and recreational boaters alike. \nKIDS EXHIBIT\n \nKids of all ages will discover what’s going on in the harbor today through a series of interactive games and activities in the children’s exhibit. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a close-up look at the nation’s busiest container port! Learn how cranes work\, imagine yourself in a variety of harbor professions\, build your own wharves\, test your knowledge of ships and cargo\, or just settle down and enjoy a nautical story!\nDue to Covid-19-related precautions\, the toys and costumes have been temporarily removed. \nCAUGHT\, CANNED\, AND EATEN\n \nThe Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) was the fishing capital of the nation for much of the twentieth century. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna\, sardines\, mackerel\, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. \nToday\, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed\, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries endures. \nCOMMERCIAL DIVING\n \n  \nThis exhibit is an introduction to just a few of the thousands of jobs performed by commercial divers and fishery divers in the South Bay\, and was the inspiration of the late Torrance R. Parker\, noted commercial diver and author of 20\,000 Jobs Under the Sea. \nSCHOOL TOURS\nThe museum is pleased to offer educational tours throughout the year at no charge. \nThe museum is located on the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor. Students will have a front-row opportunity to see the massive container ships in action and learn about international trade\, ship terminology\, sailor’s art\, and the history of the working people who built Los Angeles harbor into the nation’s busiest container port. \nTours are free for grades K-12\, Wednesday –Friday mornings\, and reservations are REQUIRED. The museum is unable to accommodate group tours without a reservation. \nCall the tour hotline at 310-548-2900 and schedule your tour today\, or email info@lamaritimemuseum.org. \nRESEARCH\nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum Research Library is home to thousands of books\, historic photographs and archival documents waiting for you to discover! \nResearch questions can be directed to info@lamaritimemuseum.org and 310-548-7618 ext. 215. \nPortions of our collection have online finding aids and digital records: \nOnline Archive of California (OAC) \nOnline Digital Collections \n\nSuggested Donation:\nAdults $5\nSeniors (62+) $3\nChildren 12 & under FREE\nHours\nMonday-Tuesday: Closed\nWednesday – Sunday: 12:00pm – 5:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.lamaritimemuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

The land art movement first appeared in the late 1960s and served to challenge the location\, material\, size\, and temporal existence of a work of art. Double Negative consists of two long straight trenches\, 30 feet wide and 50 feet deep\, cut into the “tabletop” of Mormon Mesa\, displacing 240\,000 tons of desert sandstone. The cuts face each other across an indentation in the plateaus’ scalloped perimeter\, forming a continuous image\, a thick linear volume that bridges and combines the “negative” space between them. \nmore info at: Double Negative \n\nAdmission to Double Negative by artist Michael Heizer is always free.\n\nHours\nMonday: 11:00 a.m.-6:00p.m.\nTuesday: Closed\nWednesday: 11:00 a.m.-6:00p.m.\nThursday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nFriday: 11:00 a.m.-6:00p.m.\nSaturday – Sunday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00p.m. \n  \nGeneral Admission: Free\nSpecial exhibitions: $18\nMembers: Free\nChildren under 12: Free\nSeniors and students: $10 \nSpecial exhibitions are free every Thursday\, 5-8pm.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.moca.org\n \n  \n\n\nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

Like monuments and national anthems\, they intend to create a sense of identity-based on a shared past\, present\, and future. \nLike many other governments\, the communist countries of the twentieth century produced an abundance of flags and banners. They were omnipresent at military parades\, sports events\, and public gatherings. Apart from national flags\, many organizations produced their own richly decorated flags and banners. The Wende Museum holds over 2\,000 of these ornamental textiles in its collection. \nMartin Roemers: Relics of the Cold War\n \nDuring an eleven-year period\, from 1998 through 2009\, Dutch photographer Martin Roemers photographed the structural and topographic remnants of the Cold War in both the East and West. His research took him to Russia\, Poland\, Czech Republic\, Ukraine\, Latvia\, Lithuania\, Great Britain\, Netherlands\, Belgium\, and Germany\, where he documented underground tunnels\, abandoned army bases\, military training areas\, rotting tanks\, and destroyed monuments. \nLight–guard–house: Installation by Farrah Karapetian\n \nThe 20-square-foot aluminum guardhouse that sat outside the ADN headquarters in East Berlin from 1971–92 is both an artifact of an atmosphere of mistrust and representative of past and current political protectionism. Artist Farrah Karapetian will turn this structure into a lighthouse\, changing a gesture of suspicion into a gesture of welcome. The windows of the guardhouse will be tinted in a rainbow gradient encompassing all of the colors potentially included in national flags. Over the course of Wende’s concurrent exhibition\, The Medium is the Message: Flags and Banners\, Karapetian will engage with the public about experiences they have had as migrants. As the stories accumulate and become available on the museum’s website\, the light inside the lighthouse will pause at the various colors associated with the flags of the respective national borders crossed. Rather than the finality of immigration\, the artist’s focus is the prevalence of migration\, asking visitors: What experiences of welcome or mistrust have occurred as you have moved internationally? How have they colored your life in their wake? \n\n \n10808 Culver Blvd.\, Culver City\, CA 90230 \n \nThe Wende is an art museum\, historical archive of the Cold War\, and center for creative community engagement that explores and inspires change.  \nThe Wende reaches beyond the conventional walls of a museum and places equal value on an international scholarship\, community engagement\, digital access\, and wide-ranging experimentation. \nWende is a German word meaning “turning point” or “change” that has come to describe the transformative period around the fall of the Berlin Wall. SUMMARY:Hammer Museum Free Screening
DESCRIPTION:TONIGHT- The Hammer Museum\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHammer Museum Free Screening presents: Never Rarely Something Always \nSATURDAY JUL 16\, 2022 7:30 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPart of the UCLA Film & Television Archive’s American Neorealism\, Part Two: 1984-2020 screening series. Register at cinema.ucla.edu to attend this in-theater screening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNever Rarely Sometimes Always was deservedly awarded a special jury prize at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival for Neorealism\, even though no such prize exists. It’s a story ripped directly from the fabric of our times. Newcomer Sidney Flanigan is a revelation as the young teen who travels from her small Pennsylvania town to New York City\, where she seeks an abortion amidst a world trying in so many ways not only to deny her but to crush her spirit. Brilliantly shot on location in Super 16mm by Hélène Louvart\, it captures Flanigan braving an inhumane system with a touching mix of tenderness and strength. Real life social worker Kelly Chapman adds another level of realism as a character based on herself. \n(2020\, dir. Eliza Hittman\, DCP\, color\, 101 min.) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nATTENDING THIS PROGRAM?\nTicketing: Admission to Archive screenings at the Hammer is free. Registration is required via the Film & Television Archive website\, and tickets must be picked up at the box office. Hammer members receive priority ticketing until 15 minutes before showtime. Please review the Archive’s ticketing policy and COVID-19 admission policy. Questions should be directed to the Archive at programming@cinema.ucla.edu or 310-206-8013.\nParking: Parking is available under the museum. Rates are $7 for the first three hours with museum validation\, and $3 for each additional 20 minutes\, with a $20 daily maximum. There is a $7 flat rate after 6 p.m. on weekdays\, and all day on weekends. \n\nRead our food\, bag check\, and photo policies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Hammer Museum champions the art and artists who challenge us to see the world in a new light\, to experience the unexpected\, to ignite our imaginations\, and inspire change. \nThe Hammer understands that art not only has the power to transport us through aesthetic experience but can also provide significant insight into some of the most pressing cultural\, political\, and social questions of our time. \nAnd through our unwavering commitment to free admission and free public programs\, the Hammer Museum is open for all and FREE FOR GOOD.\n  \nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Sunday: 11:00am – 6:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://hammer.ucla.edu/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Free of charge\, this is a must see experience. \n  \n \n\n\nViewing through the 100-Inch Hooker Telescope\nThe world’s largest telescope from 1917 to 1949\, the 100-inch Telescope forever changed our understanding of the scale and nature of our Universe and launched a revolution in astronomy that continues through today. This world-heritage class instrument\, used by many of the greatest astronomers of the Twentieth Century\, has only recently been made available for regular public viewing. It is the largest telescope in the world that you can rent! Imagine looking through the telescope used by astronomers Edwin Hubble and Milton Humason in the late 1920s to measure the expansion of the Universe. \n\n  \n \nThe 60 inch Telescope\nMount Wilson Observatory’s 60-inch telescope was completed in 1908 by Observatory founder George Ellery Hale with funding from Andrew Carnegie. It was the world’s largest operational telescope until Hale went on to complete the Mt. Wilson 100-inch telescope in 1917. For a more detailed history of this revolutionary instrument\, which became the model for all large observatory telescopes of the future\, see the article “Building the 60-inch Telescope.” Among the many important discoveries from the 60-inch telescope was Harlow Shapley’s revelation in 1918 that the accepted view of the time\, that our Sun was near the center of the Milky Way Galaxy\, was wrong. Shapley used the light gathering power of the 60-inch to show that our solar system is instead half way out toward the edge of our Galaxy. The telescope was a workhorse instrument for astronomy for over half a century and used by astronomical luminaries such as Edwin Hubble\, Walter Baade\, and Allan Sandage to unravel the secrets of stars and galaxies. Now retired from active scientific service\, the 60-inch and the 100-inch telescopes are the largest in the world made exclusively available to the public. With their large light-collecting mirrors and the exquisite skies over Mount Wilson\, these historic telescopes provide an unrivaled and unique astronomical experience. \n\n\n\n\n\nCHARA (Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy)\nMount Wilson’s newest astronomical instruments are Georgia State University’s optical interferometric array of six telescopes. This facility\, located here because of the exceptional seeing conditions\, puts Mount Wilson back on the cutting edge of astrophysics. The full array was completed in 2004. Each telescope of the CHARA Array has a light-collecting mirror 1-meter in diameter. The telescopes are dispersed over the mountain to provide a two-dimensional layout that provides the resolving capability (but not the light collecting ability!) of a single telescope a fifth of a mile in diameter. Light from the individual telescopes is conveyed through vacuum tubes to a central Beam Synthesis Facility in which the six beams are combined together. When the paths of the individual beams are matched to an accuracy of less than one micron\, after the light traverses distances of hundreds of meters\, the Array then acts like a single coherent telescope for the purposes of achieving exceptionally high angular resolution. The Array is capable of resolving details as small as 200 micro-arcseconds\, equivalent to the angular size of a nickel seen from a distance of 10\,000 miles. In terms of the number and size of its individual telescopes\, its ability to operate at visible and near infrared wavelengths\, and its longest baselines of 330 meters\, the CHARA Array is arguably the most powerful instrument of its kind in the world. \nScience Objectives\nThe Array is applicable to problems in almost all areas of contemporary astronomy. It is particularly suited to stellar astrophysics where it will be used to measure the diameters\, distances\, masses\, and luminosities of stars\, as well as to image features such as spots and flares on their surfaces. Other projects range from detecting planetary systems\, imaging stars in process of formation\, and studies of bright transient phenomena like novae. \nFor more information on this amazing research facility and the science that is emerging from it\, please go to the CHARA array homepage. There you can find a video\, Sizing up the Stars\, that explains how interferometry works. \n\n\n\n \nAstronomical Museum\nAlso on the mountain\, next to the 100-inch telescope\, there is a new exhibit hall that displays Albert Michelson’s original interferometer\, used to get the first measurement of stars other than our Sun.  The exhibit hall reveals in detail how the light is combined in the new CHARA area. \nWeekend Public Guided Tours\n\n\n\n\n\nDocent-led walking tours of the observatory take place on Saturdays and Sundays through November 29. The two hour tours depart at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. sharp from the Cosmic Cafe located above the large parking lot at the entrance to the Observatory. A special feature of these tours is entrance into both the 60-inch and 100-inch telescope domes\, as well as the observing room of the 150-foot Solar Tower Telescope.  On rare occasions\, a telescope may be closed to the tour due to a special event or maintenance. \n\n\nPurchasing Tickets \nTickets are $15 (adults) and $13 (ages 12 and under & 62 and older). Tour tickets are available for same-day purchase at the Cosmic Café\, and rarely sell out. For each tour\, 15 spots are available. \nIf you have a large group\, we urge you to opt for a private tour instead. These can be arranged by sending an email request to tours@mtwilson.edu. \nChildren under age 6 are not permitted. The tours involve about a mile of walking and climbing some stairs. Please read the Health Notice in the information tab. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrivate Group Tours\nPrivate guided tours may be arranged by individuals or groups in advance. A modest per-person fee is charged. More information is available here. Please contact tours@mtwilson.edu for more details and a private tour request form. Private tours are held in the daytime only and do not include looking through a telescope. \n\n\n Weather conditions may occasionally result in unscheduled closures. Access to Mount Wilson is via the Angeles Crest Highway (CA Hwy 2) from the 210 Freeway at La Canada Flintridge. You can download a printable PDF map with directions here.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThe Cosmic Café Sandwich Shop\nCome up the mountain for a wonderful lunch in an incomparable setting. Located in the Pavilion above the main parking lot\, serves fresh-made sandwiches and other treats and souvenirs on Saturdays and Sundays through early November\, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. \n  \n\n\n \nFree Self Guided Tours\nIf you are planning ahead and would like a nice guide of your visit\, Print your own free brochure for a self-guided tour and map of Mount Wilson. \n\n\n\nAn Interactive Map\nTo explore the telescopes and other sites on observatory online\, click on the interactive map of the Observatory\, above. \n  \n\n\n \nA 13-page Visitors Guide is also available for purchase at the Cosmic Café. Written by Hal McAlister\, the second director of the Mount Wilson Institute and founder of CHARA\, it is a well-illustrated guide to all the points of interest on the mountaintop. \n\n\n\n\nElevation Warning\nThe high elevation of the Observatory (5715 ft) and the change in elevation during the approximately one-mile and two-hour long tour are unsuitable for individuals with respiratory and heart problems or with limited mobility. \nThe century-old facilities are not ADA-compliant and\, except for the Astronomical Museum and the Cosmic Cafe\, offer no access to those who cannot climb multiple flights of stars. Thus\, tours of the Observatory\, either guided or unguided\, are inappropriate for some elderly people and for those who are not in good health. \nVisitors should take these factors into consideration before touring the Observatory. \n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\nA U.S. Forest Service Adventure Pass is required to park at the Observatory\, as it is located on U.S. Forest Service land. A day pass may be purchased at the Cosmic Cafe (when it is open from April 4 to November 29 in 2020) on weekends between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Other times\, the $5 day pass or the $30 dollar annual pass may be purchased at many locations around Los Angeles before you head up.  Click here to go to the U.S. Forest Service website for more information about the Adventure Pass and where to buy them. Their website has a place to enter your location to search for nearby vendors.
