Reliving life aboard a whaling ship and Melville’s soul-searching journey while the group huddled for warmth on the sand was a transformative experience. Tim realized the importance of learning outside of the traditional classroom and founded the Venice Oceanarium\, a Museum Without Walls. \n \nThis concept of blending the arts and sciences is the core of our programming. We believe that our integrative curriculum inspires kids of all ages to be stewards of our precious oceans. \nOver the years we’ve expanded our outreach to include our highly anticipated annual grunion party\, weekly Marine Biology pop-up labs at the end of the Venice Pier\, classes at local schools and youth centers\, tidepool talks\, wetland walks\, and other excursions. \nVenice Beach: An Urban Coastal Park\n \nVenice Beach is a wonderful juxtaposition of urban life and natural wonder. Wide sandy beaches\, crashing waves\, shells\, seaweed\, birds\, and other wildlife coexist with surfers\, sunbathers\, and sandcastles. \nThe tidepools at the Venice Beach Breakwater are teeming with wildlife (to be enjoyed with your eyes only) as the iconic and colorful Venice graffiti walls loom in the background. There’s a secret reef\, and beautiful wetlands\, and on a clear day\, you can see Malibu and Catalina Island. \nMillions of locals and visitors enjoy our beaches. Few stop to really appreciate the rare treasures it has to offer. Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. SUMMARY:Hollywood Heritage Museum
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY FRIDAY-SUNDAY- Hollywood\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum\, is located in the Lasky-DeMille Barn\, which was built in 1901.  The story of the early Hollywood motion picture industry and the historic Hollywood community is told through archival photographs\, historic documents\, movie props and related memorabilia.  Visitors experience the actual structure where Cecil B. DeMille’s office exists\, furnished with selected personal DeMille belongings\, and where countless movies were filmed and studio staff worked and played. \nOn December 27\, 1956\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was designated California State Historic Landmark No. 554\, recognizing the significant role the building played in the birth of the Hollywood motion picture industry.  Since 1985\, Hollywood Heritage\, Inc. has funded the preservation\, restoration and maintenance of the barn. It’s the oldest existing motion picture production building in Hollywood\, having been established as the Burns-Revier Studio in 1912\, and becoming the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company in 1913.  The Lasky Company merged with Adolph Zuckor’s Famous Players in 1916\, becoming Famous Players-Lasky and merging with Paramount Distributing Company\, finally becoming Paramount Pictures Corporation. In 2014\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [See the Time Line on the Museum link for a more detailed history of the barn]. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVISITING THE MUSEUM\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum is open Friday\, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4 pm. As we share our ample parking lot with the Hollywood Bowl\, the museum is occasionally closed when the Bowl has an event.  If you are traveling a long way to visit us\, it might be a good idea to phone first to make sure we are open: (323) 874-2276. \n\n\nPARKING\nParking is free. There is a large parking area on the east side of Highland Avenue\, in front of the museum.  There is no entrance facing Highland Avenue.  You have to go around the corner either on Milner Road or Odin Street and immediately turn into the lot.  If there are parking lot attendants at a barricade\, tell them that you are visiting the museum. \nPUBLIC TRANSPORTATION\nThe Metro subway station closest to the Museum is the Hollywood-Highland stop.  We are located approximately a half-mile north on Highland Avenue\, about a 12-minute walk. \nBECOME A DOCENT:\nHollywood Heritage is a volunteer driven organization. These types of donated items can be dropped off at the museum along with the donor’s name and address so that\, if desired\, donor recognition and/or a tax letter can be provided by the Collections Manager. \nFor Hollywood Heritage Archive:  These are items that Hollywood Heritage’s curator agrees are compatible with our collection.  An appointment may be set up with our Collections Manager.  Much of the collection has been donated by individuals and families with relatives who contributed to the film industry and the Hollywood community\, often with the goal of preserving their relatives’ participation in Hollywood. The African American Firefighter Museum is dedicated to promote diversity and to stand up for inequality against all races and genders. \nThe first floor contains vintage fire apparatus\, stories and pictures of pioneering African American Los Angeles Firefighters. The Museum gallery is located on the second floor with pictures\, artifacts and other memorabilia of African American Firefighters from around the country. \nOPEN EVERY SUNDAY FROM 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm\n \n\n\n1401 S Central Ave\, Los Angeles\, CA 90021 \n\nHISTORY\nThe AAFFM opened it’s doors as a Museum on December 13\, 1997. The dedication of the Museum also served as the acknowledgement of what was believed to be the city’s first 100 years of service by African American Firefighters (1897-1997). In 2002\, the Los Angeles Times contacted the AAFFM and stated they had discovered factual information to indicate the history started before 1897 with a man named Sam Haskins\, who was listed as the first Los Angeles Fireman of African decent when he was hired in 1892 and killed while responding to a fire in 1895. \nToday the Museum is open to the public and is strictly volunteer and donation driven. It is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization and it is available for use by organizations and individuals that desire to host events such as; meetings\, luncheons\, dinners\, banquets\, book signings\, film viewings\, jazz festivals\, social dances\, receptions and retreats. Our beloved historian\, 96 year old retired Firefighter Arnett Hartsfield\, who passed away in 2014 was our most cherished volunteer. As a Los Angeles Firefighter during the 1940s and 50’s he lead the integration of the Los Angeles Fire Department. As a graduate of USC law school\, he and his fellow firemen known as the Stentorians\, the NAACP and the local community were instrumental in successfully integrating the LAFD. DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. DESCRIPTION:Barbara Kruger\, Untitled (Questions)- DTLA\n\n  \n\n\nMOCA has reinstalled the monumental wall work by Los Angeles–based artist Barbara Kruger (b. New York 1945)\, Untitled (Questions) (1990/2018). The emblematic red\, white\, and blue artwork was originally commissioned by MOCA in 1989 for the exhibition A Forest of Signs: Art in the Crisis of Representation\, and was last installed in 1990 on the south wall of MOCA’s building (now The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA). The work holds an iconic place in the collective memory of Los Angeles’s art community and is considered one of the museum’s curatorial highlights over its forty-year history. \n\nThis iteration is installed on the north facade of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA\, facing Temple Street and measuring 30 by 191 feet. Asking nine questions including “Who is beyond the law?\,” “Who is bought and sold?\,” and “Who is free to choose?\,” the work points to issues of patriotism\, civic engagement\, and power relations. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns\, and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, notably arts of Haitian Vodou\, Brazil and Suriname. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84\, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). \nThe ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. It is the largest maritime museum on the West Coast. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by Modernist architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. \n\nEXHIBITS\nANGELS GATE TUGBOAT\n \nThe tugboat ANGELS GATE arrived at the Museum in 1992\, after almost 50 years of providing general towing services and goodwill tours for the Port of Los Angeles. \nTĀMINARU\n \nIn the early 20th century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish. Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally from the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor. \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara\, organized by Tara Fansler\, and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Japan Business Association with the assistance of the Terminal Islanders Club. \nPOSEIDON MODEL\n \nThere is a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS POSEIDON was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure”. \nFifteen men built the model over a period of three months. POSEIDON is 21 .5 feet long and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS QUEEN MARY\, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach\, California. \nNAVY HALL\n \nThe Museum building\, built-in 1941\, was originally used as a ferry terminal\, transporting people and automobiles between San Pedro and Terminal Island. The area of the first floor where cars would enter and exit is now used as the Navy Hall. \nANGELS GATE LIGHT\n \nThe Angels Gate Lighthouse (officially known as Los Angeles Harbor Light) has marked the entrance of Los Angeles Harbor through times of war and peace\, and even survived a tidal wave! The tower itself has undergone many changes through the years. The distinctive green flash of the Angels Gate Lighthouse remains a welcoming beacon to professional mariners and recreational boaters alike. \nKIDS EXHIBIT\n \nKids of all ages will discover what’s going on in the harbor today through a series of interactive games and activities in the children’s exhibit. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a close-up look at the nation’s busiest container port! Learn how cranes work\, imagine yourself in a variety of harbor professions\, build your own wharves\, test your knowledge of ships and cargo\, or just settle down and enjoy a nautical story!\nDue to Covid-19-related precautions\, the toys and costumes have been temporarily removed. \nCAUGHT\, CANNED\, AND EATEN\n \nThe Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) was the fishing capital of the nation for much of the twentieth century. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna\, sardines\, mackerel\, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. \nToday\, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed\, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries endures. \nCOMMERCIAL DIVING\n \n  \nThis exhibit is an introduction to just a few of the thousands of jobs performed by commercial divers and fishery divers in the South Bay\, and was the inspiration of the late Torrance R. Parker\, noted commercial diver and author of 20\,000 Jobs Under the Sea. \nSCHOOL TOURS\nThe museum is pleased to offer educational tours throughout the year at no charge. \nThe museum is located on the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor. DESCRIPTION:NOW EXHIBITING – El Segundo Museum of Art\nExperience 51: TIME\, a project by artist and production designer Rick Carter\, is an immersive collage that contemplates the concept of time. The exhibition features paintings\, drawings\, and collages by Carter along with photographs\, movie memorabilia\, and additional works by eight other artists who were invited to participate. \nTIME envelops visitors in floor-to-ceiling layered imagery that extends 25 feet high and includes portraits by Carter hung from above on thirteen\, four-sided displays; ​​preliminary sketches and collages from his many production designs; and props and memorabilia including a park bench from which Forrest Gump narrated his life story. \nON DISPLAY UNTIL March 25\, 2023\n \nCarter\, a longtime painter\, is a two-time Academy Award®-winning production designer acclaimed for his work with directors including Steven Spielberg\, Robert Zemeckis\, James Cameron\, and J.J. Abrams. Often he has envisioned designs that convey notions of time itself\, including for the blockbuster films A.I. Artificial Intelligence\, Amistad\, Avatar\, Back to the Future\, Forrest Gump\, Jurassic Park\, Lincoln\, and Star Wars. \n \nFeatured as well in our TIME exhibition are pieces inspired by our visit to the Getty Research Institute with David Brafman. As curator of rare books for The Getty\, David was able to show our TIME artist collective books that express aspects of time—whether through their content or format. \n \n\n \n208 Main Street\, El Segundo\, California 90245 \n \nESMoA is an art laboratory located in El Segundo\, California and it is run by artlab21 Foundation\, a public non profit organization funded 100% by donations. \nOur mission is to Spread the Spark of Creativity with a focus on experimental exhibitions\, community engagement\, and arts education. EVERY FIRST THURSDAY OF THE MONTH – Burbank\nLooking for a Fun Place for Kids to learn and enjoy? The Martial Arts History Museum is designed as an Asian educational\, cultural\, and artistic experience\, it is a place in which visitors and young people can learn about each of the different Asian countries (China\, Japan\, Korea\, Thailand\, the Philippines\, etc.) and how martial arts played a significant role in their culture\, history\, and traditions. \nIt also provides a historical look at American history with sections on the History of Anime\, Martial Arts in America\, and Media arts including Hollywood films\, tv\, and magazines. The Martial Arts History Museum is something the whole family can enjoy and it is a great place for home school kids and public school kids to get an education about Asian history and write book reports about it. It is affordable and convenient. \n \nLearn About Culture and History\nThe Martial Arts History Museum is an exciting place for the entire family to enjoy. Even if you’ve never done martial arts in your life\, you will have a great time exploring how Asian history became part of American history through film\, tv\, animation and more. Artifacts include several Japanese Samurai\, a unique look as the artistry of the Ninja or trans the roots of anime through our animation timeline. \nIf you enjoy movies and television\, you will love our films/tv timeline tracing roots to Anna May Wong and Akira Kurasawa’s epic film\, the Seven Samurai. It takes close to an hour to visit the museum and scheduled tours are available. \n \nGroup Rates & Tours:\nThe Museum holds a number of tours for the Unified School districts\, home schools\, mentally and physically challenged groups\, church groups\, senior groups and martial arts studios. Although the Museum is closed to the public Monday through Wednesday\, we are open for scheduled tours. We also provide tours during our regular hours\, but the off-hours will allow us to open the Museum for only your group. \nTours:\nTours last exactly 1 hour. Visitors will have amble time to explore the Museum and then be lead by a docent for a 30-minute historical walk-through. A scavenger hunt will be provided for all the kids to enjoy and each receives a free Museum sticker. The Museum is able to handle a variety of groups. Largest groups for visit are 100 kids. Magnolia Blvd.\, Burbank\, CA 91506 \n\n\nWorld’s First Museum dedicated to the Arts Begins\n\nThe Martial Arts History Museum officially began as a registered museum on Sept. 15\, 1999. It was founded by former magazine publisher\, martial arts historian and martial arts veteran Michael Matsuda. The concept of the museum actually began in 1987 but didn’t officially begin until 1999. \nAfter a number of dinner ceremonies and special events\, the Martial Arts History Museum gathered the biggest martial arts icons in the world to cut the ribbon in launching the first of many traveling exhibits. For the next four years\, the museum was on the road going all across the country. From libraries to conventions to expos to the Queen Mary\, the museum was housed in a 1\,000 square foot exhibit with wonderful reviews the museum exhibit was in high demand. \n \nAfter numerous meetings with the L.A. City Council\, Mayor Villariagosa’s staff\, the California Senate\, the San Fernando City Council\, and more\, it was through the urging of Congressman Howard McKeon and the Mayor of Santa Clarita\, that the Martial Arts History Museum open their doors in a brick and mortar facility in the city of Santa Clarita. The museum opened in 2006 in an 8\,000 square foot facility which featured a wide range of displays as well as a 200-plus seat theater. The city of Santa Clarita had provided us with future plans to construct are area for three museums\, which would include the Martial Arts History. Unfortunately\, a year later\, a new leadership was in control and their future plans for a museum center were canceled. \nIn 2010\, the museum decided to relocate to a city that would be more open to art and culture; which was the city of Burbank\, CA. Burbank is a very populated area surrounded by Hollywood’s biggest productions studios. In 2011\, the museum re-opened to the public holding a significant number of events every month. Being located in Burbank\, many of the local schools were now able to visit the facility. DESCRIPTION:EVERY THURSDAY 12:30–1:00PM- Online via ZOOM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWould you like to learn how to meditate? Join the Hammer Museum each Thursday for Mindful Awareness Meditation Online. Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. No special clothing is required\, and participants are welcome to join for five minutes or enjoy the entire 30 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese free weekly drop-in sessions usually take place in the Hammer’s Billy Wilder Theater but are now offered live online via Zoom. \nMindful Awareness Meditation is provided by UCLA & The Hammer Museum\n  \nff \n\nSessions are led by Diana Winston and other instructors from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. DESCRIPTION:KIDS UNDER 12 FREE- Long Beach\nThe Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) was founded in 1950 as a municipal art center for the city of Long Beach. Since its inception\, the Museum has been housed in the historic 1911 Elizabeth Milbank Anderson House. In 1957\, the Anderson House was designated as the Long Beach Museum of Art\, at which time the Museum began acquiring a permanent collection.\nIn 1977\, the Museum was honored with accreditation by the American Association of Museums\, which it has since maintained. Since 1986\, the Long Beach Museum of Art Foundation has managed the Museum\, governed by a Board of Trustees. In 2000\, the Museum completed a restoration of the historic residence and constructed a new two-story exhibition pavilion (in 2015 the pavilion was renamed the Hartman Pavilion). Since then\, the Museum has offered diverse and compelling exhibitions\, which has resulted in increased visitors and program attendance. \n  \n \nThe Museum’s permanent collection is diverse with more than 3\,200 works encompassing 300 years of American and European art in all media. Highlights from the collection include furniture by Charles and Ray Eames\, ceramics by Beatrice Wood\, and sculptures by Claire Falkenstein\, George Rickney and Peter Voulokos; Early 20th Century European Modernist paintings by Vasily Kandinsky\, Alexej Jawlensky and others from the Milton Wichner Collection; and contemporary artists such as James Jean\, Sherrie Wolf\, and Sandow Birk whose paintings have recently been added to the collection. \nSince 1951\, exhibitions presented by the Museum have been varied with shows ranging from individual artists to specific types of art. Some of the notable highlights include: The Artful Teapot: 20th Century Expressions from the Kamm Collection; Architecture for Dogs; Frank E. DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY TO SUNDAY  – Italian American Museum of Los Angeles\nThe Italian American Museum of Los Angeles\, or IAMLA\, is located in the historic Italian Hall\, which was constructed in 1908 to serve as a gathering place for the Italian community. Today\, the Italian Hall is the oldest remaining structure from Los Angeles’ Italian enclave and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \n \nTHE HISTORY\nItalians and Italian Americans have played an instrumental role in the development of Los Angeles as one of the world’s greatest metropolises\, yet the history of Italians in the region is largely unknown. Though Los Angeles is home to the nation’s fifth-largest Italian population today\, and the Italian presence in the American West predates the nation’s founding\, seldom is the city included in dialogs surrounding contemporary or historic Italian American communities. An examination of the region’s Italian roots reveals both the complexity of the Italian Diaspora and the exceptionally diverse fabric of Southern California’s history. \n \nThe Los Angeles Italian experience contrasts with that of Italian immigrants elsewhere in the country and reveals the complexity of the Italian American diaspora. Given the success that Italian Americans have achieved in the United States\, it is easy to forget that they\, like other minority groups\, faced considerable prejudice and hostility in their struggle to achieve the American Dream. In the American South\, Italians were a common target of lynchings and racially-motivated violence. In the early 20th century\, eugenicists described Italians as genetically inferior\, while political cartoons of the era depicted Italians as threats to American security and racial purity. \nTHE MISSION\nThe mission of the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles is to foster a deeper understanding of Southern California’s diverse heritage through research\, historic preservation\, exhibitions\, and educational programs that examine the history and continuing contributions of Italian Americans in multi-ethnic Los Angeles and the United States. \nThe IAMLA is a charity that depends on donations to accomplish its specific mission. The Air Museum’s educational programs give children an opportunity to see and touch the airplanes that made aviation history. The Air Museum offers an inside look at completed and in-progress aircraft restoration projects. The Western Museum of Flight’s collection includes numerous Warbirds\, aircraft and target drones\, piston and jet aircraft engines\, aircraft components\, aircraft ejection seats\, World War II instruments\, aircrew accessories\, and an extensive model aircraft collection. TUES – SUNDAY- Exposition Park\nThe California African American Museum (CAAM) focuses on enrichment and education on the cultural heritage and history of African Americans with a focus on California and western United States. \nAdmission is free to all visitors. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \n  \n  \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \n  \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \n \n  \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \n  \n  \nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. Each quarter\, curators review the current holdings and decide as a committee on future acquisitions. DESCRIPTION:FRIDAY TO SUNDAY – Culver City\nThe Wende Museum is an art museum\, historical archive of the Cold War\, and center for creative community engagement that explores and inspires change. The Wende Museum is open Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. Admission is free\, and no reservations are required. \nADMISSION IS FREE\, NO RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.\nPublic Tours \nThe Wende Museum offers free\, guided tours of the museum and exhibitions on Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m. \nPrivate Tours \nPrivate\, docent-led tours of the Wende Museum are available upon request. Like monuments and national anthems\, they intend to create a sense of identity-based on a shared past\, present\, and future. \nLike many other governments\, the communist countries of the twentieth century produced an abundance of flags and banners. They were omnipresent at military parades\, sports events\, and public gatherings. Apart from national flags\, many organizations produced their own richly decorated flags and banners. The Wende Museum holds over 2\,000 of these ornamental textiles in its collection. \nMartin Roemers: Relics of the Cold War\n \nDuring an eleven-year period\, from 1998 through 2009\, Dutch photographer Martin Roemers photographed the structural and topographic remnants of the Cold War in both the East and West. His research took him to Russia\, Poland\, Czech Republic\, Ukraine\, Latvia\, Lithuania\, Great Britain\, Netherlands\, Belgium\, and Germany\, where he documented underground tunnels\, abandoned army bases\, military training areas\, rotting tanks\, and destroyed monuments. \nLight–guard–house: Installation by Farrah Karapetian\n \nThe 20-square-foot aluminum guardhouse that sat outside the ADN headquarters in East Berlin from 1971–92 is both an artifact of an atmosphere of mistrust and representative of past and current political protectionism. Artist Farrah Karapetian will turn this structure into a lighthouse\, changing a gesture of suspicion into a gesture of welcome. The windows of the guardhouse will be tinted in a rainbow gradient encompassing all of the colors potentially included in national flags. Over the course of Wende’s concurrent exhibition\, The Medium is the Message: Flags and Banners\, Karapetian will engage with the public about experiences they have had as migrants. As the stories accumulate and become available on the museum’s website\, the light inside the lighthouse will pause at the various colors associated with the flags of the respective national borders crossed. Rather than the finality of immigration\, the artist’s focus is the prevalence of migration\, asking visitors: What experiences of welcome or mistrust have occurred as you have moved internationally? It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84\, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). \nThe ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. It is the largest maritime museum on the West Coast. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by Modernist architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. \n\nEXHIBITS\nANGELS GATE TUGBOAT\n \nThe tugboat ANGELS GATE arrived at the Museum in 1992\, after almost 50 years of providing general towing services and goodwill tours for the Port of Los Angeles. \nTĀMINARU\n \nIn the early 20th century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish. Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally from the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor. \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara\, organized by Tara Fansler\, and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Japan Business Association with the assistance of the Terminal Islanders Club. \nPOSEIDON MODEL\n \nThere is a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS POSEIDON was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure”. \nFifteen men built the model over a period of three months. POSEIDON is 21 .5 feet long and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS QUEEN MARY\, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach\, California. \nNAVY HALL\n \nThe Museum building\, built-in 1941\, was originally used as a ferry terminal\, transporting people and automobiles between San Pedro and Terminal Island. The area of the first floor where cars would enter and exit is now used as the Navy Hall. \nANGELS GATE LIGHT\n \nThe Angels Gate Lighthouse (officially known as Los Angeles Harbor Light) has marked the entrance of Los Angeles Harbor through times of war and peace\, and even survived a tidal wave! The tower itself has undergone many changes through the years. The distinctive green flash of the Angels Gate Lighthouse remains a welcoming beacon to professional mariners and recreational boaters alike. \nKIDS EXHIBIT\n \nKids of all ages will discover what’s going on in the harbor today through a series of interactive games and activities in the children’s exhibit. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a close-up look at the nation’s busiest container port! Learn how cranes work\, imagine yourself in a variety of harbor professions\, build your own wharves\, test your knowledge of ships and cargo\, or just settle down and enjoy a nautical story!\nDue to Covid-19-related precautions\, the toys and costumes have been temporarily removed. \nCAUGHT\, CANNED\, AND EATEN\n \nThe Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) was the fishing capital of the nation for much of the twentieth century. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna\, sardines\, mackerel\, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. \nToday\, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed\, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries endures. \nCOMMERCIAL DIVING\n \n  \nThis exhibit is an introduction to just a few of the thousands of jobs performed by commercial divers and fishery divers in the South Bay\, and was the inspiration of the late Torrance R. Parker\, noted commercial diver and author of 20\,000 Jobs Under the Sea. \nSCHOOL TOURS\nThe museum is pleased to offer educational tours throughout the year at no charge. \nThe museum is located on the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor. Students will have a front-row opportunity to see the massive container ships in action and learn about international trade\, ship terminology\, sailor’s art\, and the history of the working people who built Los Angeles harbor into the nation’s busiest container port. \nTours are free for grades K-12\, Wednesday –Friday mornings\, and reservations are REQUIRED. In its original sense\, the term “museum” meant a spot dedicated to the muses – “a place where man’s mind could attain a mood of aloofness above everyday affairs.” By far the most important museum of antiquity was the great institution at Alexandria founded by Ptolemy Philadelphus in the third century before Christ\, (an endeavor supported by a grant from the treasury). And no treatment of the museum would be complete without mention of Noah’s Ark in which we find the complete Museum of Natural History the world has ever seen. \nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology traces its origins to this period when many of the essential collections of today were beginning to take form.
