DESCRIPTION:EVERY SUNDAY – Los Angeles\nVisit The African American Firefighter Museum! The African American Firefighter Museum is dedicated to promote diversity and to stand up for inequality against all races and genders. \nThe first floor contains vintage fire apparatus\, stories and pictures of pioneering African American Los Angeles Firefighters. The Museum gallery is located on the second floor with pictures\, artifacts and other memorabilia of African American Firefighters from around the country. \nOPEN EVERY SUNDAY FROM 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm\n \n\n\n1401 S Central Ave\, Los Angeles\, CA 90021 \n\nHISTORY\nThe AAFFM opened it’s doors as a Museum on December 13\, 1997. The dedication of the Museum also served as the acknowledgement of what was believed to be the city’s first 100 years of service by African American Firefighters (1897-1997). In 2002\, the Los Angeles Times contacted the AAFFM and stated they had discovered factual information to indicate the history started before 1897 with a man named Sam Haskins\, who was listed as the first Los Angeles Fireman of African decent when he was hired in 1892 and killed while responding to a fire in 1895. \nToday the Museum is open to the public and is strictly volunteer and donation driven. It is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization and it is available for use by organizations and individuals that desire to host events such as; meetings\, luncheons\, dinners\, banquets\, book signings\, film viewings\, jazz festivals\, social dances\, receptions and retreats. Our beloved historian\, 96 year old retired Firefighter Arnett Hartsfield\, who passed away in 2014 was our most cherished volunteer. As a Los Angeles Firefighter during the 1940s and 50’s he lead the integration of the Los Angeles Fire Department. As a graduate of USC law school\, he and his fellow firemen known as the Stentorians\, the NAACP and the local community were instrumental in successfully integrating the LAFD. The Villa weaves together art\, performances\, family activities\, lectures\, theater\, scholarship\, conservation. There are other activities to create an integrated educational and cultural experience for all ages. The museum serves as a gateway to the classical past for students\, scholars\, specialized professionals\, and general audiences. \n\nThe Getty Villa’s Architecture\n\nExplore the groundbreaking architecture of the Getty Center in this 45 minute docent-led tour of the site. \n \n \nGardens are integral to the setting of the Getty Villa\, as they were in the ancient Roman home. Open spaces around the site feature bronze sculptures\, fountains\, and lush plantings of trees\, herbs\, and flowers used by the Romans. In ancient Roman times\, the outer peristyle garden would have been used to converse with guests and for solo contemplation. \n \n\nThe Getty Villa is Closed Mondays\nAdmission to the Getty Villa is free for the whole family. Each Villa ticket allows you to bring up to three children ages 15 and under with you in one car. The Getty Villa offers special educational programs for children. The gallery has polystyrene props from Greek and Roman culture for children to handle and use to cast shadows. SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \nCalifornia African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair\n  \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \n  \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \n \n  \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \nCalifornia African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair\nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. Each quarter\, curators review the current holdings and decide as a committee on future acquisitions. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns\, and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, notably arts of Haitian Vodou\, Brazil and Suriname. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Peubla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC \n \n  \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, and notable arts from Haitian Vodou\, Brazil\, and Suriname. \n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n\n\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Puebla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross-section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and the Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India\, and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. Like monuments and national anthems\, they intend to create a sense of identity-based on a shared past\, present\, and future. \nLike many other governments\, the communist countries of the twentieth century produced an abundance of flags and banners. They were omnipresent at military parades\, sports events\, and public gatherings. Apart from national flags\, many organizations produced their own richly decorated flags and banners. The Wende Museum holds over 2\,000 of these ornamental textiles in its collection. \nMartin Roemers: Relics of the Cold War\n \nDuring an eleven-year period\, from 1998 through 2009\, Dutch photographer Martin Roemers photographed the structural and topographic remnants of the Cold War in both the East and West. His research took him to Russia\, Poland\, Czech Republic\, Ukraine\, Latvia\, Lithuania\, Great Britain\, Netherlands\, Belgium\, and Germany\, where he documented underground tunnels\, abandoned army bases\, military training areas\, rotting tanks\, and destroyed monuments. \nLight–guard–house: Installation by Farrah Karapetian\n \nThe 20-square-foot aluminum guardhouse that sat outside the ADN headquarters in East Berlin from 1971–92 is both an artifact of an atmosphere of mistrust and representative of past and current political protectionism. Artist Farrah Karapetian will turn this structure into a lighthouse\, changing a gesture of suspicion into a gesture of welcome. The windows of the guardhouse will be tinted in a rainbow gradient encompassing all of the colors potentially included in national flags. Over the course of Wende’s concurrent exhibition\, The Medium is the Message: Flags and Banners\, Karapetian will engage with the public about experiences they have had as migrants. As the stories accumulate and become available on the museum’s website\, the light inside the lighthouse will pause at the various colors associated with the flags of the respective national borders crossed. Rather than the finality of immigration\, the artist’s focus is the prevalence of migration\, asking visitors: What experiences of welcome or mistrust have occurred as you have moved internationally? Forest Lawn offers several ongoing exhibits that are free to the public.\n \nThe Great Mausoleum at 100\nOn May 2\, 1920\, Forest Lawn dedicated the Great Mausoleum. On May 2\, 2020\, we recognize the centennial of this monumental building. Construction began in 1917 and only one level was complete at the dedication ceremony. The building now has 11 terraces\, dozens of sculptures\, and more than 100 stained glass windows. It has endured through the Great Depression\, World War II\, and into the 21st century. DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY FRIDAY-SUNDAY- Hollywood\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum\, is located in the Lasky-DeMille Barn\, which was built in 1901.  The story of the early Hollywood motion picture industry and the historic Hollywood community is told through archival photographs\, historic documents\, movie props and related memorabilia.  Visitors experience the actual structure where Cecil B. DeMille’s office exists\, furnished with selected personal DeMille belongings\, and where countless movies were filmed and studio staff worked and played. \nOn December 27\, 1956\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was designated California State Historic Landmark No. 554\, recognizing the significant role the building played in the birth of the Hollywood motion picture industry.  Since 1985\, Hollywood Heritage\, Inc. has funded the preservation\, restoration and maintenance of the barn. It’s the oldest existing motion picture production building in Hollywood\, having been established as the Burns-Revier Studio in 1912\, and becoming the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company in 1913.  The Lasky Company merged with Adolph Zuckor’s Famous Players in 1916\, becoming Famous Players-Lasky and merging with Paramount Distributing Company\, finally becoming Paramount Pictures Corporation. In 2014\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [See the Time Line on the Museum link for a more detailed history of the barn]. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVISITING THE MUSEUM\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum is open Friday\, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4 pm. As we share our ample parking lot with the Hollywood Bowl\, the museum is occasionally closed when the Bowl has an event.  If you are traveling a long way to visit us\, it might be a good idea to phone first to make sure we are open: (323) 874-2276. \n\n\nPARKING\nParking is free. There is a large parking area on the east side of Highland Avenue\, in front of the museum.  There is no entrance facing Highland Avenue.  You have to go around the corner either on Milner Road or Odin Street and immediately turn into the lot.  If there are parking lot attendants at a barricade\, tell them that you are visiting the museum. \nPUBLIC TRANSPORTATION\nThe Metro subway station closest to the Museum is the Hollywood-Highland stop.  We are located approximately a half-mile north on Highland Avenue\, about a 12-minute walk. \nBECOME A DOCENT:\nHollywood Heritage is a volunteer driven organization. These types of donated items can be dropped off at the museum along with the donor’s name and address so that\, if desired\, donor recognition and/or a tax letter can be provided by the Collections Manager. \nFor Hollywood Heritage Archive:  These are items that Hollywood Heritage’s curator agrees are compatible with our collection.  An appointment may be set up with our Collections Manager.  Much of the collection has been donated by individuals and families with relatives who contributed to the film industry and the Hollywood community\, often with the goal of preserving their relatives’ participation in Hollywood. The African American Firefighter Museum is dedicated to promote diversity and to stand up for inequality against all races and genders. \nThe first floor contains vintage fire apparatus\, stories and pictures of pioneering African American Los Angeles Firefighters. The Museum gallery is located on the second floor with pictures\, artifacts and other memorabilia of African American Firefighters from around the country. \nOPEN EVERY SUNDAY FROM 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm\n \n\n\n1401 S Central Ave\, Los Angeles\, CA 90021 \n\nHISTORY\nThe AAFFM opened it’s doors as a Museum on December 13\, 1997. The dedication of the Museum also served as the acknowledgement of what was believed to be the city’s first 100 years of service by African American Firefighters (1897-1997). In 2002\, the Los Angeles Times contacted the AAFFM and stated they had discovered factual information to indicate the history started before 1897 with a man named Sam Haskins\, who was listed as the first Los Angeles Fireman of African decent when he was hired in 1892 and killed while responding to a fire in 1895. \nToday the Museum is open to the public and is strictly volunteer and donation driven. It is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization and it is available for use by organizations and individuals that desire to host events such as; meetings\, luncheons\, dinners\, banquets\, book signings\, film viewings\, jazz festivals\, social dances\, receptions and retreats. Our beloved historian\, 96 year old retired Firefighter Arnett Hartsfield\, who passed away in 2014 was our most cherished volunteer. As a Los Angeles Firefighter during the 1940s and 50’s he lead the integration of the Los Angeles Fire Department. As a graduate of USC law school\, he and his fellow firemen known as the Stentorians\, the NAACP and the local community were instrumental in successfully integrating the LAFD. DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. DESCRIPTION:Barbara Kruger\, Untitled (Questions)- DTLA\n\n  \n\n\nMOCA has reinstalled the monumental wall work by Los Angeles–based artist Barbara Kruger (b. New York 1945)\, Untitled (Questions) (1990/2018). The emblematic red\, white\, and blue artwork was originally commissioned by MOCA in 1989 for the exhibition A Forest of Signs: Art in the Crisis of Representation\, and was last installed in 1990 on the south wall of MOCA’s building (now The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA). The work holds an iconic place in the collective memory of Los Angeles’s art community and is considered one of the museum’s curatorial highlights over its forty-year history. \n\nThis iteration is installed on the north facade of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA\, facing Temple Street and measuring 30 by 191 feet. Asking nine questions including “Who is beyond the law?\,” “Who is bought and sold?\,” and “Who is free to choose?\,” the work points to issues of patriotism\, civic engagement\, and power relations. The land art movement first appeared in the late 1960s and served to challenge the location\, material\, size\, and temporal existence of a work of art. Double Negative consists of two long straight trenches\, 30 feet wide and 50 feet deep\, cut into the “tabletop” of Mormon Mesa\, displacing 240\,000 tons of desert sandstone. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns\, and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, notably arts of Haitian Vodou\, Brazil and Suriname. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84\, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). \nThe ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. It is the largest maritime museum on the West Coast. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by Modernist architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. \n\nEXHIBITS\nANGELS GATE TUGBOAT\n \nThe tugboat ANGELS GATE arrived at the Museum in 1992\, after almost 50 years of providing general towing services and goodwill tours for the Port of Los Angeles. \nTĀMINARU\n \nIn the early 20th century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish. Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally from the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor. \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara\, organized by Tara Fansler\, and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Japan Business Association with the assistance of the Terminal Islanders Club. \nPOSEIDON MODEL\n \nThere is a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS POSEIDON was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure”. \nFifteen men built the model over a period of three months. POSEIDON is 21 .5 feet long and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS QUEEN MARY\, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach\, California. \nNAVY HALL\n \nThe Museum building\, built-in 1941\, was originally used as a ferry terminal\, transporting people and automobiles between San Pedro and Terminal Island. The area of the first floor where cars would enter and exit is now used as the Navy Hall. \nANGELS GATE LIGHT\n \nThe Angels Gate Lighthouse (officially known as Los Angeles Harbor Light) has marked the entrance of Los Angeles Harbor through times of war and peace\, and even survived a tidal wave! The tower itself has undergone many changes through the years. The distinctive green flash of the Angels Gate Lighthouse remains a welcoming beacon to professional mariners and recreational boaters alike. \nKIDS EXHIBIT\n \nKids of all ages will discover what’s going on in the harbor today through a series of interactive games and activities in the children’s exhibit. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a close-up look at the nation’s busiest container port! Learn how cranes work\, imagine yourself in a variety of harbor professions\, build your own wharves\, test your knowledge of ships and cargo\, or just settle down and enjoy a nautical story!\nDue to Covid-19-related precautions\, the toys and costumes have been temporarily removed. \nCAUGHT\, CANNED\, AND EATEN\n \nThe Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) was the fishing capital of the nation for much of the twentieth century. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna\, sardines\, mackerel\, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. \nToday\, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed\, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries endures. \nCOMMERCIAL DIVING\n \n  \nThis exhibit is an introduction to just a few of the thousands of jobs performed by commercial divers and fishery divers in the South Bay\, and was the inspiration of the late Torrance R. Parker\, noted commercial diver and author of 20\,000 Jobs Under the Sea. \nSCHOOL TOURS\nThe museum is pleased to offer educational tours throughout the year at no charge. \nThe museum is located on the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor. The museum’s 12\,700 square-foot renovated industrial building—designed by wHY Architecture under the leadership of Kulapat Yantrasast—features ample space for exhibitions\, public programs\, retail pop-ups\, integrated offices\, and special projects. \nICA LA’s mission is to support art that sparks the pleasure of discovery and challenges the way we see and experience the world\, ourselves\, and each other.
