SUMMARY:Hollywood Heritage Museum
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY FRIDAY-SUNDAY- Hollywood\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum\, is located in the Lasky-DeMille Barn\, which was built in 1901.  The story of the early Hollywood motion picture industry and the historic Hollywood community is told through archival photographs\, historic documents\, movie props and related memorabilia.  Visitors experience the actual structure where Cecil B. DeMille’s office exists\, furnished with selected personal DeMille belongings\, and where countless movies were filmed and studio staff worked and played. \nOn December 27\, 1956\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was designated California State Historic Landmark No. 554\, recognizing the significant role the building played in the birth of the Hollywood motion picture industry.  Since 1985\, Hollywood Heritage\, Inc. has funded the preservation\, restoration and maintenance of the barn. It’s the oldest existing motion picture production building in Hollywood\, having been established as the Burns-Revier Studio in 1912\, and becoming the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company in 1913.  The Lasky Company merged with Adolph Zuckor’s Famous Players in 1916\, becoming Famous Players-Lasky and merging with Paramount Distributing Company\, finally becoming Paramount Pictures Corporation. In 2014\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [See the Time Line on the Museum link for a more detailed history of the barn]. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVISITING THE MUSEUM\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum is open Friday\, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4 pm. As we share our ample parking lot with the Hollywood Bowl\, the museum is occasionally closed when the Bowl has an event.  If you are traveling a long way to visit us\, it might be a good idea to phone first to make sure we are open: (323) 874-2276. \n\n\nPARKING\nParking is free. There is a large parking area on the east side of Highland Avenue\, in front of the museum.  There is no entrance facing Highland Avenue.  You have to go around the corner either on Milner Road or Odin Street and immediately turn into the lot.  If there are parking lot attendants at a barricade\, tell them that you are visiting the museum. \nPUBLIC TRANSPORTATION\nThe Metro subway station closest to the Museum is the Hollywood-Highland stop.  We are located approximately a half-mile north on Highland Avenue\, about a 12-minute walk. \nBECOME A DOCENT:\nHollywood Heritage is a volunteer driven organization. Our docents assist museum guests and help with our Barn programs\, as well as many other activities associated with historic preservation issues and the day-to-day activities that make our organization so vital.  If you are interested in becoming involved\, click here. \n  \n \nHOLLYWOOD HERITAGE ARCHIVE:\nHollywood Heritage maintains an archive of historic photographs\, documents\, and other material related to the film industry and the community.  Our archive also includes considerable holdings on Hollywood real estate history and buildings of architectural significance.  We continue to seek material related to our dual mission of industry and community history.  Questions regarding our archive and donations procedures should be directed to our Collections Manager\, Richard Adkins. \nDONATION OF PHYSICAL ITEMS:\nHollywood Heritage welcomes donations both monetary and physical objects.  Donated items fall into two categories. \nFor resale in the Museum Store:  The museum store contains new and used items.  The older items are all donated to Hollywood Heritage and include books on the motion picture industry and its participants\, and books on the Los Angeles area.  It also includes used DVDs\, VHS tapes and other electronic storage of motion pictures\, as well as related items. These types of donated items can be dropped off at the museum along with the donor’s name and address so that\, if desired\, donor recognition and/or a tax letter can be provided by the Collections Manager. \nFor Hollywood Heritage Archive:  These are items that Hollywood Heritage’s curator agrees are compatible with our collection.  An appointment may be set up with our Collections Manager.  Much of the collection has been donated by individuals and families with relatives who contributed to the film industry and the Hollywood community\, often with the goal of preserving their relatives’ participation in Hollywood. DESCRIPTION:EVERY SUNDAY – Los Angeles\nVisit The African American Firefighter Museum! The African American Firefighter Museum is dedicated to promote diversity and to stand up for inequality against all races and genders. \nThe first floor contains vintage fire apparatus\, stories and pictures of pioneering African American Los Angeles Firefighters. The Museum gallery is located on the second floor with pictures\, artifacts and other memorabilia of African American Firefighters from around the country. \nOPEN EVERY SUNDAY FROM 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm\n \n\n\n1401 S Central Ave\, Los Angeles\, CA 90021 \n\nHISTORY\nThe AAFFM opened it’s doors as a Museum on December 13\, 1997. The dedication of the Museum also served as the acknowledgement of what was believed to be the city’s first 100 years of service by African American Firefighters (1897-1997). In 2002\, the Los Angeles Times contacted the AAFFM and stated they had discovered factual information to indicate the history started before 1897 with a man named Sam Haskins\, who was listed as the first Los Angeles Fireman of African decent when he was hired in 1892 and killed while responding to a fire in 1895. \nToday the Museum is open to the public and is strictly volunteer and donation driven. It is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization and it is available for use by organizations and individuals that desire to host events such as; meetings\, luncheons\, dinners\, banquets\, book signings\, film viewings\, jazz festivals\, social dances\, receptions and retreats. Our beloved historian\, 96 year old retired Firefighter Arnett Hartsfield\, who passed away in 2014 was our most cherished volunteer. As a Los Angeles Firefighter during the 1940s and 50’s he lead the integration of the Los Angeles Fire Department. As a graduate of USC law school\, he and his fellow firemen known as the Stentorians\, the NAACP and the local community were instrumental in successfully integrating the LAFD. DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. SUMMARY:The Museum of Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:Barbara Kruger\, Untitled (Questions)- DTLA\n\n  \n\n\nMOCA has reinstalled the monumental wall work by Los Angeles–based artist Barbara Kruger (b. New York 1945)\, Untitled (Questions) (1990/2018). The emblematic red\, white\, and blue artwork was originally commissioned by MOCA in 1989 for the exhibition A Forest of Signs: Art in the Crisis of Representation\, and was last installed in 1990 on the south wall of MOCA’s building (now The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA). The work holds an iconic place in the collective memory of Los Angeles’s art community and is considered one of the museum’s curatorial highlights over its forty-year history. \n\nThis iteration is installed on the north facade of The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA\, facing Temple Street and measuring 30 by 191 feet. Asking nine questions including “Who is beyond the law?\,” “Who is bought and sold?\,” and “Who is free to choose?\,” the work points to issues of patriotism\, civic engagement\, and power relations. In connection with the work\, MOCA led a series of voter registration efforts during the 2018 midterms\, and will continue these efforts in advance of the 2020 general election. \n\nThis project was initiated by MOCA Director Klaus Biesenbach and is organized by MOCA Senior Curator Bennett Simpson. \nThis installation of Barbara Kruger’s Untitled (Questions) is generously supported by an anonymous donor. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nONE MUSEUM. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \n  \n  \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \n  \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \n \n  \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns\, and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, notably arts of Haitian Vodou\, Brazil and Suriname. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84\, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). \nThe ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. It is the largest maritime museum on the West Coast. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by Modernist architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. \n\nEXHIBITS\nANGELS GATE TUGBOAT\n \nThe tugboat ANGELS GATE arrived at the Museum in 1992\, after almost 50 years of providing general towing services and goodwill tours for the Port of Los Angeles. \nTĀMINARU\n \nIn the early 20th century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish. Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally from the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor. \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara\, organized by Tara Fansler\, and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Japan Business Association with the assistance of the Terminal Islanders Club. \nPOSEIDON MODEL\n \nThere is a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS POSEIDON was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure”. \nFifteen men built the model over a period of three months. POSEIDON is 21 .5 feet long and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS QUEEN MARY\, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach\, California. \nNAVY HALL\n \nThe Museum building\, built-in 1941\, was originally used as a ferry terminal\, transporting people and automobiles between San Pedro and Terminal Island. The area of the first floor where cars would enter and exit is now used as the Navy Hall. \nANGELS GATE LIGHT\n \nThe Angels Gate Lighthouse (officially known as Los Angeles Harbor Light) has marked the entrance of Los Angeles Harbor through times of war and peace\, and even survived a tidal wave! The tower itself has undergone many changes through the years. The distinctive green flash of the Angels Gate Lighthouse remains a welcoming beacon to professional mariners and recreational boaters alike. \nKIDS EXHIBIT\n \nKids of all ages will discover what’s going on in the harbor today through a series of interactive games and activities in the children’s exhibit. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a close-up look at the nation’s busiest container port! Learn how cranes work\, imagine yourself in a variety of harbor professions\, build your own wharves\, test your knowledge of ships and cargo\, or just settle down and enjoy a nautical story!\nDue to Covid-19-related precautions\, the toys and costumes have been temporarily removed. \nCAUGHT\, CANNED\, AND EATEN\n \nThe Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) was the fishing capital of the nation for much of the twentieth century. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna\, sardines\, mackerel\, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. \nToday\, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed\, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries endures. \nCOMMERCIAL DIVING\n \n  \nThis exhibit is an introduction to just a few of the thousands of jobs performed by commercial divers and fishery divers in the South Bay\, and was the inspiration of the late Torrance R. Parker\, noted commercial diver and author of 20\,000 Jobs Under the Sea. \nSCHOOL TOURS\nThe museum is pleased to offer educational tours throughout the year at no charge. \nThe museum is located on the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor. Students will have a front-row opportunity to see the massive container ships in action and learn about international trade\, ship terminology\, sailor’s art\, and the history of the working people who built Los Angeles harbor into the nation’s busiest container port. \nTours are free for grades K-12\, Wednesday –Friday mornings\, and reservations are REQUIRED. Unique to automobile museums\, each car on display is attentively serviced and maintained to remain as drivable as when the vehicle originally rolled off the showroom floor. On view are various Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance winners and cars once owned by movie stars\, royalty and other notable personalities. \n  \n\nBuilding ONE: The Nethercutt Museum FREE!\nThe entire collection is housed in two beautifully appointed exhibit facilities located just north of Los Angeles. Housed in the Museum is the Nethercutt Automotive Research Library and Archives \, one of the world’s top automotive research facilities. Just steps outside the Museum are a resplendently restored steam locomotive and railcar. \nOpened in 1971\, The Nethercutt Collection is a not-for-profit educational institution and a resource for automobile enthusiasts\, historians\, students and scholars. It is open to the public at no charge. The Nethercutt Museum showcases more than 130 of the world’s greatest antique\, vintage\, classic and special interest automobiles including many top winners of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. \n\n\n  \n \nTHE ANTIQUE ERA (1890s – 1915)\nInnovation and experimentation were at the heart of this era and provided the catalyst for the automobiles’ development. By the late-19th century\, “horseless carriages” were being built by small groups of artisans\, craftsmen and engineers on a small scale\, with many taking characteristics from the wagons they were replacing. \n\n\nTHE VINTAGE ERA (1916 – 1924)\nA class of cars that came to be known today as “vintage\,” fits in between the expensive coach built brands that became classics and the inexpensive models represented by Ford\, Chevrolet and Dodge. These cars sold for between $500 and $2\,000. They had basic engineering features but had better cosmetic appointments such as visors\, cigar lighters and wool broadcloth interiors. \n  \n \nTHE CLASSIC ERA (1925 – 1948)\nThis era elevated the common automobile to a status symbol\, as evidenced by their cost. When common vehicles sold for $400 to about $1\,200\, the classic car had a price tag of $2\,000 to $20\,000. \n  \n\nTHE POST-WAR ERA (1945 – 1970s)\nThroughout the 1950s\, engine power and vehicle speeds rose\, designs became better integrated and more stylized\, and cars grew more popular across the world. The auto market slightly shifted in the 1960s\, causing Detroit to worry about foreign competition. European makers adopted even greater technology and Japan appeared as a serious car-producing nation. \n  \n \nTHE MUSEUM LOCOMOTIVE & PRIVATE CAR\n1937 Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson Locomotive #2839: \n#2839 was built by Montreal Locomotive Works and is resplendent in its Royal maroon\, gold leaf\, gloss black and brushed stainless steel livery\, is a testament to the grand era of steam locomotive engineering. The Hudson type is a 4-6-4 wheel arrangement and was a high-speed passenger locomotive with a top speed of 90 mph. \n1912 Pullman Private Car #100 California: \nCustom built by Pullman in Chicago\, Illinois for Clara Baldwin Stocker the eldest Daughter of local Pioneer “Lucky” Baldwin. This railcar has been beautifully restored back to 1912 \nBuilding TWO: The Nethercutt Collection: Available by Tour Only  advanced reservations are required- $10\n  \n \nLower Salon\n\nThe Lower Salon is where guests assemble to start the guided tour. The salon is a microcosm of the entire collection. There are about 25 automobiles dating from the early 1900’s up till the late 1940’s. Also in display are nickelodeons\, music boxes\, David Winter Cottages\, Dolls\, Coins\, and crystal figurines. \n  \n\n \nGrand Salon\n\nMarble columns\, crystal chandeliers\, painted ceilings all make up this beautiful Grand Salon Showroom of the 1910’s\, 20 and 30s. On display are approx. 30 of the finest automoblies of that era. It was founded by former magazine publisher\, martial arts historian and martial arts veteran Michael Matsuda. The concept of the museum actually began in 1987 but didn’t officially begin until 1999. \nAfter a number of dinner ceremonies and special events\, the Martial Arts History Museum gathered the biggest martial arts icons in the world to cut the ribbon in launching the first of many traveling exhibits. For the next four years\, the museum was on the road going all across the country. From libraries to conventions to expos to the Queen Mary\, the museum was housed in a 1\,000 square foot exhibit with wonderful reviews the museum exhibit was in high demand. \n \nAfter numerous meetings with the L.A. City Council\, Mayor Villariagosa’s staff\, the California Senate\, the San Fernando City Council\, and more\, it was through the urging of Congressman Howard McKeon and the Mayor of Santa Clarita\, that the Martial Arts History Museum open their doors in a brick and mortar facility in the city of Santa Clarita. The museum opened in 2006 in an 8\,000 square foot facility which featured a wide range of displays as well as a 200-plus seat theater. The city of Santa Clarita had provided us with future plans to construct are area for three museums\, which would include the Martial Arts History. Unfortunately\, a year later\, a new leadership was in control and their future plans for a museum center were canceled. \nIn 2010\, the museum decided to relocate to a city that would be more open to art and culture; which was the city of Burbank\, CA. Burbank is a very populated area surrounded by Hollywood’s biggest productions studios. In 2011\, the museum re-opened to the public holding a significant number of events every month. Being located in Burbank\, many of the local schools were now able to visit the facility. DESCRIPTION:KIDS UNDER 12 FREE- Long Beach\nThe Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) was founded in 1950 as a municipal art center for the city of Long Beach. Since its inception\, the Museum has been housed in the historic 1911 Elizabeth Milbank Anderson House. In 1957\, the Anderson House was designated as the Long Beach Museum of Art\, at which time the Museum began acquiring a permanent collection.\nIn 1977\, the Museum was honored with accreditation by the American Association of Museums\, which it has since maintained. Since 1986\, the Long Beach Museum of Art Foundation has managed the Museum\, governed by a Board of Trustees. In 2000\, the Museum completed a restoration of the historic residence and constructed a new two-story exhibition pavilion (in 2015 the pavilion was renamed the Hartman Pavilion). Since then\, the Museum has offered diverse and compelling exhibitions\, which has resulted in increased visitors and program attendance. \n  \n \nThe Museum’s permanent collection is diverse with more than 3\,200 works encompassing 300 years of American and European art in all media. Highlights from the collection include furniture by Charles and Ray Eames\, ceramics by Beatrice Wood\, and sculptures by Claire Falkenstein\, George Rickney and Peter Voulokos; Early 20th Century European Modernist paintings by Vasily Kandinsky\, Alexej Jawlensky and others from the Milton Wichner Collection; and contemporary artists such as James Jean\, Sherrie Wolf\, and Sandow Birk whose paintings have recently been added to the collection. \nSince 1951\, exhibitions presented by the Museum have been varied with shows ranging from individual artists to specific types of art. As such\, artists challenge us to consider language and image anew\, by positioning words as an essential part of visual culture. \n \n\n \nKnown around the world as one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled\, industrialist Norton Simon spent over 30 years amassing an astonishing collection of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century\, and a stellar collection of Indian and Southeast Asian art spanning 2\,000 years. Modern and Contemporary Art from Europe and the United States also occupies an important place in the Museum’s collections. The Museum houses more than 12\,000 objects\, roughly 1\,000 of which are on view in the galleries and gardens. The museum has some 60 antique fire engines in its collection\, including fire engines from the 1860s through just-retired apparatus. \nOPEN Wednesday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. \nWhen you arrive\, please have a $5 donation ready for each visitor over 12 years old.  \nFREE ADMISSION for Our Members\, Active & Retired LACoFD Firefighters\, Active Military\, and children 12 and under.\nWe accept cash\, checks\, and credit cards.\n \nOur docents are retired Firefighters\, many of whom have worked on our more recent apparatus\, or similar rigs. Your guides are extremely knowledgeable and just about the friendliest group of people you will meet. They have stories to tell and are open to sharing them with you. \nAntique fire apparatus are the stars of the showroom. Some of our finest specimens are on display. The world-famous television show EMERGENCY! 51’s are all here; The Crown Engine 51\, the Ward LaFrance Engine 51\, and Squad 51. We have rigs from the late 1800s through the 20th Century all shined up and ready for your inspection. The City of Bellflower’s first Los Angeles County Fire Department engine\, Engine 23\, is here. This apparatus underwent a massive restoration in preparation for the Museum’s grand opening in July of 2018. \nDisplay cases surround the showroom and are full of very interesting fire-related artifacts. By the end of the 80s\, our Museum was formally organized under the State of California as a not-for-profit public benefit corporation. \nThe Association acquired\, and still maintains\, a space in the LACo Fire Department Headquarters in Los Angeles\, storage units at the Department’s Air facility in Pacoima\, and a large warehouse in South Gate. Around the year 2000\, the Association rented an old auto repair shop from the city of Bellflower\, CA. This facility became the first public face for the Association and allowed us to open to the public for the first time. \nIn July of 2018\, the City of Bellflower became a partner with the Association. The showcase Museum is located on the bottom floor of Bellflower’s MAYNE EVENTS CENTER. In its heyday\, the group boasted over 1200 members and was considered one of the most influential organizations in southern California. Senator Stephen M. White\, Los Angeles Mayor Fred Eaton\, and Ex-President Richard M. Nixon were all members of Ramona Parlor #109. \n  \n \nThe Museum is located on Mission Drive\, opposite the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse in the heart of the Mission District\, and houses a number of fascinating artifacts from California’s colorful history. \n  \n \nOur Mission\nFriendship\, Loyalty\, and Charity \nThis is the motto of the Native Sons of the Golden West\, a statewide fraternal organization of native Californians committed to preserving and promoting the history of the Golden State. \nEstablished in 1885\, the NSGW landmarks historic features and buildings as part of its mission.  The organization also raises funds for Cleft Palate\, the fourth greatest malady affecting children in California. \nRamona Parlor #109 is just one of the hundreds of parlors throughout the state.  It is the only parlor that owns and operates its own California history museum.  The Ramona Museum of California History is in the heart of the San Gabriel Mission District and is open every Saturday from 1-3 pm. \n  \n \nRamona Parlor #​109\nRamona Parlor #109 is one of hundreds of parlors throughout the state of California. It is a lively group that meets once a month on the second Thursday in the Ramona Meeting Room behind the Museum on Mission Drive. Ramona Parlor is the only one that owns and operates its California history museum.  The Ramona Museum of California History is in the heart of the San Gabriel Mission District and is open every Saturday from 1-3 pm.  Tours may be arranged by appointment. \nRamona Parlor hosts many events throughout the year.  An Annual Cleft palate Golf Tournament\, a Casino Turnaround\, A Day at the Races\, and historical outings and dedications are just some of the activities held throughout the year. \n  \n \nNative Sons of the Golden West\nWe must go back in history to the California Gold Rush\, which was one of the unmatched marvels of American history. In 1848\, California was a tranquil wilderness where the population density was so low that\, on average\, only one human being dwelt per every 528 square miles. But after President James K. Polk made the official announcement on Dec. 5\, 1848\, that gold had been discovered\, things ramped up very quickly. \nGold seekers (mostly young men) came in droves from all corners of the earth. Within a short time\, 100\,000 people were living in California. They were industrious\, civic-minded people. They held a Constitutional Convention and activated a state government on Dec. 20\, 1849. They acted so rapidly that it took Congress almost a year to catch up. Partially because California was not officially declared a state until Sept. 9\, 1850. \nIt was an unparalleled phenomenon. No other American state has been organized in such “can-do” circumstances. But by the mid-1870s\, many more new residents were flooding into California. \nThey were Civil War veterans seeking grants of public lands. Some people could enjoy the convenient transportation of the newly completed transcontinental railroad. \n \nOld-timers shook their heads and worried that\, with the nature of the population changing so rapidly. That it was only a matter of time before the colorful history of the Gold Rush and early-day statehood soon would be forgotten and neglected. So they hit upon an idea. Why not form an organization of men who had been BORN in California? The museum’s mission is to further intercultural understanding through the arts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. \nThe museum’s historic building has served as a center for art\, culture\, and learning in Pasadena since its construction in 1924 by pioneering collector and entrepreneur Grace Nicholson (1877-1948) as her residence\, galleries\, and Treasure House/emporium. Ms. Nicholson’s championing of Asian art early in the century set the tone for much of the Pasadena community’s arts-related activities during the ensuing decades. The building also served as the site of the Pasadena Art Museum\, which was renowned for its groundbreaking exhibitions of contemporary art. SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. DESCRIPTION:NOW ON VIEW- The Autry Museum\n\n\n\n\nThe Autry Museum of the American West wants to know\, “What makes Griffith Park special to you?”  In a city with such diversity as Los Angeles\, The Autry is reaching out to Angelenos in hopes to hear from as many people as possible.\n\n\n\n\n \nWhat makes Griffith Park special to you? For many Angelenos\, the name evokes a panorama of memories—from picnics\, hikes\, horses\, and softball games to the zoo\, observatory\, trains\, and\, of course\, the Autry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBut how much do you really know about Griffith Park? How did it come to be\, and what are its best-kept secrets? Join us as we explore stories about Griffith Park\, a landscape that we honor as Tongva/Gabrielino land and a public park for Los Angeles. \n  \n \n  \nTo celebrate Griffith Park’s 125th anniversary in 2021\, the Autry\, has opened a community-led exhibition. The Autry’s newest exhibition\, Investigating Griffith Park\, a hands-on space that invites visitors to share their stories\, experiences\, and input on what the anniversary celebration should include. \n \n  \nOne section of the current gallery asks\, “What is the park to you?” and invites visitors to write responses. The museum says that while the public’s notes may influence the final exhibition\, they’re also helping the museum plan future questions\, focus group topics\, and talk-back sessions with partner organizations. \n \n\n\n\nWhile the Autry designed the gallery as a way to gather feedback from the public\, it’s also a great introduction to what the park offers. Visitors will find historical artifacts and photos\, video clips of Griffith Park’s many movie appearances\, a kids’ play area\, and an oversized board game about P-22\, the beloved mountain lion. \nEven the area of the park where the Autry is located has a fascinating history. In addition to the upcoming anniversary exhibition\, the Autry’s long-term plan includes building a research archive around Griffith Park in order to make it easier for people to study the park and to spur further research. \n  \n\n\n\n\nTimeline:\nCurrently open in its first phase of development\, we welcome your feedback as we further transform one of the Autry’s core galleries into an experiential\, hands-on space. Through Investigating Griffith Park\, we are gathering input from hundreds of visitors and experts to reveal some of the many stories from the park’s 4\,000-plus acres.
