After all\, the museum was originally designed to house his fine collection of old-master paintings and drawings\, as well as works on paper by Honoré Daumier and his 19th-century contemporaries. \n\n\n\n\n\nBut in the ensuing decades\, as the art world has continued to evolve\, so has Los Angeles — and so has the Hammer Museum\, which is now a part of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. In 1994\, UCLA assumed management and operations of the museum\, and the Hammer kept its original purpose but also expanded its mission. Today\, the Hammer has a wide reputation for innovation and for showcasing new artists. \n  \n\nNew Contemporary Gallery\n\n  \n“L.A. has become a hotbed of contemporary art and artists\,” says Ann Philbin\, the museum’s director since 1999\, “and the Hammer has become a premier institution where they are shown.” \n  \n\n\n4th-Floor-Offices\n\n  \nUnder Philbin’s leadership\, the museum has expanded its collections and programs\, including establishing the Hammer Projects series of exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national and international emerging artists. It also launched the Made in L.A. biennial\, now in its fourth edition. Through these and other innovations\, the Hammer has quadrupled its attendance to about 250\,000 a year. \n  \nLindbrook Terrace\n  \nMeanwhile\, Occidental Petroleum\, which occupied the adjoining building\, relocated to Houston\, Texas. So the Hammer has begun a major\, multiyear expansion that will take the museum far into the 21st century. \nEarlier this year\, the Hammer announced a $180 million capital campaign. Almost half of those funds will be used to expand gallery and other public spaces\, while the rest will go toward exhibitions\, programming and an endowment. The museum has already raised more than $130 million\, including $30 million from L.A. philanthropists Lynda and Stewart ’59\, J.D. ’62 Resnick and $20 million from Hammer board chair Marcy Carsey. \n  \n  \nAnnex\n  \nThe renovations and additions being designed by Michael Maltzan Architecture\, who was commissioned in 2000 to create the museum’s 2003 master plan\, include: \n• A newly designed entrance at Wilshire and Westwood boulevards to maximize the museum’s visual presence at one of the nation’s busiest intersections. In the coming years\, the museum will also benefit from a planned Metro Purple Line station across Wilshire. \n• More than 10\,000 square feet of additional exhibition space for contemporary art. \n• New permanent collection galleries and a study room for the Grunwald Center Collection. \n• 20\,000 square feet of enhanced public spaces\, including a new restaurant. \n• A new and more accessible Hammer Store. \n  \n  \n2nd Floor B Side\n  \nIn all\, the expansion will provide 60 percent more gallery space for exhibitions. The museum will remain open during construction\, and admission will continue to be free. “We’re accessible to everyone\, and that keeps people coming back\,” Philbin says. “L.A. has been growing as one of the world’s most exciting cultural creative communities\, and the museum has grown alongside it.” \n  \n\n  \nBookstore\nHISTORY OF THE HAMMER MUSEUM\nThe Hammer Museum opened to the public in November 1990. Founded by Dr. Armand Hammer\, former Chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corporation\, the Museum was designed by architect Edward Larrabee Barnes. Financed by Occidental\, the Museum was built adjacent to the Corporation’s international headquarters in Westwood. At that time\, the Museum featured galleries for Dr. Hammer’s collections — old master paintings and drawings\, and a collection of works on paper by Honore Daumier and his contemporaries — as well as galleries for traveling exhibitions. Dr. Hammer passed away in December 1990\, three weeks after the opening of the Museum leaving many spaces unfinished. \nIn 1992\, the Museum began negotiations with its neighbor\, University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, to assume the management and operations of the institution. In April 1994\, the partnership with UCLA was finalized and the following year the University relocated its collections and the staff of the Wight Art Gallery and the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts to the Hammer. The Museum also assumed responsibility for the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden\, located at the north end of the UCLA campus. \nHenry Hopkins\, then director of the Wight gallery and professor in the Department of Art\, became director of the Museum until his retirement in 1998. In 1999 Ann Philbin was named director and has developed a strong and original institutional identity and built a national and international reputation for thematic contemporary exhibitions\, scholarly historical exhibitions\, and contemporary artists’ projects. During her tenure the Hammer has formed a Hammer Contemporary Collection which now holds over 2\,000 artworks. In addition\, Philbin has overseen substantial renovations to the museum’s building\, including the completion of the 300-seat Billy Wilder Theater and museum café. With Philbin’s direction\, the museum instituted the internationally acclaimed Hammer Projects\, a series of more than one hundred contemporary exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national\, and international emerging artists. Open spaces around the site feature bronze sculptures\, fountains\, and lush plantings of trees\, herbs\, and flowers used by the Romans. The first African American museum of art\, history\, and culture fully supported by a state\, CAAM was the direct result of a sustained\, multiyear campaign of activism undertaken by visionary founders and community members. Its creation was an early and tangible recognition by the State of California of the critically important role African Americans have played in the American West’s cultural\, economic\, and political development. \n \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 5\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. The Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \n \nVISIT\nThe California African American Museum is located in the heart of Los Angeles\, just steps away from USC\, the California Science Center\, and the Natural History Museum. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, and notable arts from Haitian Vodou\, Brazil\, and Suriname. \n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n\n\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. The Tingatinga style began with Tanzanian painter Edward Saidi (E.S.) Tingatinga (b. Dar es Salaam\, 1939; d. 1972). His paintings are characterized by flat\, stylized animal depictions clearly outlined against a monochrome ground. Toward the end of his short life\, Tingatinga took on apprentices. A cohort of his former students continues to train students and keep alive his distinctive style. \nTingatinga is organized by the Fowler Museum at UCLA and curated by Erica P. The first African American museum of art\, history\, and culture fully supported by a state\, CAAM was the direct result of a sustained\, multiyear campaign of activism undertaken by visionary founders and community members. Its creation was an early and tangible recognition by the State of California of the critically important role African Americans have played in the American West’s cultural\, economic\, and political development. \n \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 5\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. The Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, and notable arts from Haitian Vodou\, Brazil\, and Suriname. \n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n\n\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and the Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India\, and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. In its heyday\, the group boasted over 1200 members and was considered one of the most influential organizations in southern California. Senator Stephen M. White\, Los Angeles Mayor Fred Eaton\, and Ex-President Richard M. Nixon were all members of Ramona Parlor #109. \n  \n \nThe Museum is located on Mission Drive\, opposite the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse in the heart of the Mission District\, and houses a number of fascinating artifacts from California’s colorful history. \n  \n \nOur Mission\nFriendship\, Loyalty\, and Charity \nThis is the motto of the Native Sons of the Golden West\, a statewide fraternal organization of native Californians committed to preserving and promoting the history of the Golden State. \nEstablished in 1885\, the NSGW landmarks historic features and buildings as part of its mission.  The organization also raises funds for Cleft Palate\, the fourth greatest malady affecting children in California. \nRamona Parlor #109 is just one of the hundreds of parlors throughout the state.  It is the only parlor that owns and operates its own California history museum.  The Ramona Museum of California History is in the heart of the San Gabriel Mission District and is open every Saturday from 1-3 pm. \n  \n \nRamona Parlor #​109\nRamona Parlor #109 is one of hundreds of parlors throughout the state of California. It is a lively group that meets once a month on the second Thursday in the Ramona Meeting Room behind the Museum on Mission Drive. Ramona Parlor is the only one that owns and operates its California history museum.  The Ramona Museum of California History is in the heart of the San Gabriel Mission District and is open every Saturday from 1-3 pm.  Tours may be arranged by appointment. \nRamona Parlor hosts many events throughout the year.  An Annual Cleft palate Golf Tournament\, a Casino Turnaround\, A Day at the Races\, and historical outings and dedications are just some of the activities held throughout the year. \n  \n \nNative Sons of the Golden West\nWe must go back in history to the California Gold Rush\, which was one of the unmatched marvels of American history. In 1848\, California was a tranquil wilderness where the population density was so low that\, on average\, only one human being dwelt per every 528 square miles. But after President James K. Polk made the official announcement on Dec. 5\, 1848\, that gold had been discovered\, things ramped up very quickly. \nGold seekers (mostly young men) came in droves from all corners of the earth. Within a short time\, 100\,000 people were living in California. They were industrious\, civic-minded people. They held a Constitutional Convention and activated a state government on Dec. 20\, 1849. They acted so rapidly that it took Congress almost a year to catch up. Partially because California was not officially declared a state until Sept. 9\, 1850. \nIt was an unparalleled phenomenon. No other American state has been organized in such “can-do” circumstances. But by the mid-1870s\, many more new residents were flooding into California. \nThey were Civil War veterans seeking grants of public lands. Some people could enjoy the convenient transportation of the newly completed transcontinental railroad. \n \nOld-timers shook their heads and worried that\, with the nature of the population changing so rapidly. That it was only a matter of time before the colorful history of the Gold Rush and early-day statehood soon would be forgotten and neglected. So they hit upon an idea. Why not form an organization of men who had been BORN in California? The first African American museum of art\, history\, and culture fully supported by a state\, CAAM was the direct result of a sustained\, multiyear campaign of activism undertaken by visionary founders and community members. Its creation was an early and tangible recognition by the State of California of the critically important role African Americans have played in the American West’s cultural\, economic\, and political development. \n \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 5\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. The Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \n \nVISIT\nThe California African American Museum is located in the heart of Los Angeles\, just steps away from USC\, the California Science Center\, and the Natural History Museum. SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples\, cultures\, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions\, publications\, and public programs\, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented. \nAlso featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics\, culture and social action. \nFowler Museum at UCLA provides exciting\, informative and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAreas of the Collection\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF AFRICA AND THE AFRICAN DIASPORA\n \nOne of the largest and finest in the United States\, and one of the top twenty African collections worldwide\, this collection offers a superb representation of the arts of many African nations\, including objects from Senegal\, Nigeria\, Ghana\, Cameroon\, Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire)\, Kenya\, Zambia\, and South Africa. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns\, and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, notably arts of Haitian Vodou\, Brazil and Suriname. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Peubla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. Please note: The Skirball parking garages are for Skirball visitors only. \nParking is available in the Skirball’s northern parking garage (“North Parking”)\, located underground at the end of the Skirball’s main driveway. Parking is also available in in the eastern parking garage (“East Parking”)\, located across Sepulveda Blvd. \nElectric vehicle charging stations are located on L1 in the North Parking garage and P3 in East Parking garage. There is a four-hour time limit for use of these stations\, which are reserved for vehicles in the process of charging only. For the safety of you and other visitors\, please wrap the cord around the base. \nTo enter the North Parking garage—From Skirball Ctr. Dr.\, proceed up the Skirball’s main driveway\, pass the Skirball’s main entrance on your left\, follow the curve\, and drive underground into the garage. \nTo enter the East Parking garage—From Sepulveda Blvd.\, turn onto Bergreen Pl.\, located north of Skirball Ctr. Dr.\, directly across Sepulveda from the Skirball’s main entrance. \nNOTE: Street parking on surrounding streets\, including Mulholland Drive\, is strictly prohibited. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPublic Transportation\nTake public transportation to the Skirball via Metro Rapid 734 or Metro Local 234. Visit the Metro LA websitefor bus schedules. \nNorthbound—Metro Rapid 734/Metro Local 234 (towards Sylmar/San Fernando Valley): Passengers are picked up and dropped off at the Metro stop on the southeast corner of Bergreen Pl. and Sepulveda Blvd.\, directly across the Skirball’s main entrance. Upon arriving\, cross Sepulveda Blvd. at the Bergreen Pl. crosswalk and enter the Skirball through the main entrance ahead of you. \nSouthbound—Metro Rapid 734/Metro Local 234 (towards the UCLA/Westwood): Passengers are picked up and dropped off at the Metro stop on the northwest corner of Herscher Way and Sepulveda Blvd.\, approximately 150 yards north of the Skirball’s main entrance.
