The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples\, cultures\, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions\, publications\, and public programs\, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented. \nAlso featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics\, culture and social action. \nFowler Museum at UCLA provides exciting\, informative and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAreas of the Collection\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF AFRICA AND THE AFRICAN DIASPORA\n \nOne of the largest and finest in the United States\, and one of the top twenty African collections worldwide\, this collection offers a superb representation of the arts of many African nations\, including objects from Senegal\, Nigeria\, Ghana\, Cameroon\, Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire)\, Kenya\, Zambia\, and South Africa. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns\, and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, notably arts of Haitian Vodou\, Brazil and Suriname. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Peubla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC \n \n  \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. Welcome to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum where our hardworking harbor tug ANGELS GATE provides educational tours while our historic museum building houses fascinating exhibits\, a research library\, a ham radio station\, and a gift shop. \nOPEN EVERY WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY FROM 12:00 pm TO 5:00 pm\nFREE TO CHILDREN AGES 12 AND UNDER\n\n\n\nBerth 84\, Foot of 6th St.\, San Pedro\, CA 90731 \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum is housed in the former Municipal Ferry Terminal building\, located on the main channel of the Los Angeles Harbor. It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84\, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). \nThe ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. It is the largest maritime museum on the West Coast. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by Modernist architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. \n\nEXHIBITS\nANGELS GATE TUGBOAT\n \nThe tugboat ANGELS GATE arrived at the Museum in 1992\, after almost 50 years of providing general towing services and goodwill tours for the Port of Los Angeles. \nTĀMINARU\n \nIn the early 20th century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish. Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally from the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor. \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara\, organized by Tara Fansler\, and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Japan Business Association with the assistance of the Terminal Islanders Club. \nPOSEIDON MODEL\n \nThere is a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS POSEIDON was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure”. \nFifteen men built the model over a period of three months. POSEIDON is 21 .5 feet long and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS QUEEN MARY\, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach\, California. \nNAVY HALL\n \nThe Museum building\, built-in 1941\, was originally used as a ferry terminal\, transporting people and automobiles between San Pedro and Terminal Island. The area of the first floor where cars would enter and exit is now used as the Navy Hall. \nANGELS GATE LIGHT\n \nThe Angels Gate Lighthouse (officially known as Los Angeles Harbor Light) has marked the entrance of Los Angeles Harbor through times of war and peace\, and even survived a tidal wave! The tower itself has undergone many changes through the years. The distinctive green flash of the Angels Gate Lighthouse remains a welcoming beacon to professional mariners and recreational boaters alike. \nKIDS EXHIBIT\n \nKids of all ages will discover what’s going on in the harbor today through a series of interactive games and activities in the children’s exhibit. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a close-up look at the nation’s busiest container port! Learn how cranes work\, imagine yourself in a variety of harbor professions\, build your own wharves\, test your knowledge of ships and cargo\, or just settle down and enjoy a nautical story!\nDue to Covid-19-related precautions\, the toys and costumes have been temporarily removed. \nCAUGHT\, CANNED\, AND EATEN\n \nThe Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) was the fishing capital of the nation for much of the twentieth century. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna\, sardines\, mackerel\, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. \nToday\, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed\, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries endures. \nCOMMERCIAL DIVING\n \n  \nThis exhibit is an introduction to just a few of the thousands of jobs performed by commercial divers and fishery divers in the South Bay\, and was the inspiration of the late Torrance R. Parker\, noted commercial diver and author of 20\,000 Jobs Under the Sea. \nSCHOOL TOURS\nThe museum is pleased to offer educational tours throughout the year at no charge. \nThe museum is located on the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor. Students will have a front-row opportunity to see the massive container ships in action and learn about international trade\, ship terminology\, sailor’s art\, and the history of the working people who built Los Angeles harbor into the nation’s busiest container port. \nTours are free for grades K-12\, Wednesday –Friday mornings\, and reservations are REQUIRED. Take your ticket to the Endeavour queue on the 2nd floor for admission. Shop our Endeavour web-store featuring the many new and exclusive space shuttle Endeavour products offered at the Science Center. \n\n\n\nWhile we are building Endeavour’s permanent home\, a new addition to the Science Center called the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center\, Endeavour can be viewed in the Samuel Oschin Pavilion. Guests who come to see Endeavour will begin their experience in Endeavour Together: Parts & People\, a companion exhibit featuring artifacts from Endeavour and the external tank. \nFollowing their visit to Endeavour Together\, guests will be directed to the Samuel Oschin Pavilion to see Endeavour. \n\n\n\n\nSamuel Oschin Pavilion\nIn the Samuel Oschin Pavilion\, guests will be able to see Endeavour up close and discover some of the science behind this amazing vehicle.The pavilion will feature images and video to introduce guests to Endeavour’s past missions and the crews who flew them. \n\n\n  \n  \n\nEndeavour Together: Parts & People\nEndeavour Together: Parts & People celebrates Endeavour\, the space shuttle program\, and the people who helped make the program possible. The exhibit also highlights the shuttle program’s strong connection to California\, where all the orbiters were built. Endeavour Together includes images of Endeavour under construction locally in Palmdale and Downey\, as well as artifacts that flew into space aboard Endeavour. Dramatic video programs convey the emotion and power of Endeavour. \n  \n \nRocketdyne Operations Support Center\nThe Rocketdyne Operations Support Center (ROSC) monitored every space shuttle launch\, from the first to the last\, from right here in Southern California. \n\n\nSpace Potty\nThe space potty\, or Waste Collection System\, provided a high-tech solution to one of space travel’s most pressing concerns. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nGalley\nOur galley served as a kitchen in space for astronauts aboard Endeavour. \n\n\nTires\nGuests can touch these tires from Endeavour flight STS-134\, which show the wear from landing on the runway. \n\n\nNose Cone\nThe nose cone protected sensors at the top of the space shuttle’s external tank. \n\n\nOrthogrid\nThe orthogrid was carved from a single metal plate to be part of the wall of a super-lightweight space shuttle external tank (ET). \n\n\n  \n  \n \n\n\nMission 26: ET Comes Home\nExperience ET-94’s move to the California Science Center through engaging photographs captured by Gil Garcetti. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, and notable arts from Haitian Vodou\, Brazil\, and Suriname. \n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n\n\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Puebla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and the Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India\, and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. By the end of the 80s\, our Museum was formally organized under the State of California as a not-for-profit public benefit corporation. \nThe Association acquired\, and still maintains\, a space in the LACo Fire Department Headquarters in Los Angeles\, storage units at the Department’s Air facility in Pacoima\, and a large warehouse in South Gate. Around the year 2000\, the Association rented an old auto repair shop from the city of Bellflower\, CA. SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. For many Angelenos\, the name evokes a panorama of memories—from picnics\, hikes\, horses\, and softball games to the zoo\, observatory\, trains\, and\, of course\, the Autry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBut how much do you really know about Griffith Park? How did it come to be\, and what are its best-kept secrets? Join us as we explore stories about Griffith Park\, a landscape that we honor as Tongva/Gabrielino land and a public park for Los Angeles. \n  \n \n  \nTo celebrate Griffith Park’s 125th anniversary in 2021\, the Autry\, has opened a community-led exhibition. The Autry’s newest exhibition\, Investigating Griffith Park\, a hands-on space that invites visitors to share their stories\, experiences\, and input on what the anniversary celebration should include. \n \n  \nOne section of the current gallery asks\, “What is the park to you?” and invites visitors to write responses. The museum says that while the public’s notes may influence the final exhibition\, they’re also helping the museum plan future questions\, focus group topics\, and talk-back sessions with partner organizations. \n \n\n\n\nWhile the Autry designed the gallery as a way to gather feedback from the public\, it’s also a great introduction to what the park offers. Visitors will find historical artifacts and photos\, video clips of Griffith Park’s many movie appearances\, a kids’ play area\, and an oversized board game about P-22\, the beloved mountain lion. \nEven the area of the park where the Autry is located has a fascinating history. In addition to the upcoming anniversary exhibition\, the Autry’s long-term plan includes building a research archive around Griffith Park in order to make it easier for people to study the park and to spur further research. \n  \n\n\n\n\nTimeline:\nCurrently open in its first phase of development\, we welcome your feedback as we further transform one of the Autry’s core galleries into an experiential\, hands-on space. After all\, the museum was originally designed to house his fine collection of old-master paintings and drawings\, as well as works on paper by Honoré Daumier and his 19th-century contemporaries. \n\n\n\n\n\nBut in the ensuing decades\, as the art world has continued to evolve\, so has Los Angeles — and so has the Hammer Museum\, which is now a part of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture. In 1994\, UCLA assumed management and operations of the museum\, and the Hammer kept its original purpose but also expanded its mission. Today\, the Hammer has a wide reputation for innovation and for showcasing new artists. \n  \n\nNew Contemporary Gallery\n\n  \n“L.A. has become a hotbed of contemporary art and artists\,” says Ann Philbin\, the museum’s director since 1999\, “and the Hammer has become a premier institution where they are shown.” \n  \n\n\n4th-Floor-Offices\n\n  \nUnder Philbin’s leadership\, the museum has expanded its collections and programs\, including establishing the Hammer Projects series of exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national and international emerging artists. It also launched the Made in L.A. biennial\, now in its fourth edition. Through these and other innovations\, the Hammer has quadrupled its attendance to about 250\,000 a year. \n  \nLindbrook Terrace\n  \nMeanwhile\, Occidental Petroleum\, which occupied the adjoining building\, relocated to Houston\, Texas. So the Hammer has begun a major\, multiyear expansion that will take the museum far into the 21st century. \nEarlier this year\, the Hammer announced a $180 million capital campaign. Almost half of those funds will be used to expand gallery and other public spaces\, while the rest will go toward exhibitions\, programming and an endowment. The museum has already raised more than $130 million\, including $30 million from L.A. philanthropists Lynda and Stewart ’59\, J.D. ’62 Resnick and $20 million from Hammer board chair Marcy Carsey. \n  \n  \nAnnex\n  \nThe renovations and additions being designed by Michael Maltzan Architecture\, who was commissioned in 2000 to create the museum’s 2003 master plan\, include: \n• A newly designed entrance at Wilshire and Westwood boulevards to maximize the museum’s visual presence at one of the nation’s busiest intersections. In the coming years\, the museum will also benefit from a planned Metro Purple Line station across Wilshire. \n• More than 10\,000 square feet of additional exhibition space for contemporary art. \n• New permanent collection galleries and a study room for the Grunwald Center Collection. \n• 20\,000 square feet of enhanced public spaces\, including a new restaurant. \n• A new and more accessible Hammer Store. \n  \n  \n2nd Floor B Side\n  \nIn all\, the expansion will provide 60 percent more gallery space for exhibitions. The museum will remain open during construction\, and admission will continue to be free. “We’re accessible to everyone\, and that keeps people coming back\,” Philbin says. “L.A. has been growing as one of the world’s most exciting cultural creative communities\, and the museum has grown alongside it.” \n  \n\n  \nBookstore\nHISTORY OF THE HAMMER MUSEUM\nThe Hammer Museum opened to the public in November 1990. Founded by Dr. Armand Hammer\, former Chairman of Occidental Petroleum Corporation\, the Museum was designed by architect Edward Larrabee Barnes. Financed by Occidental\, the Museum was built adjacent to the Corporation’s international headquarters in Westwood. At that time\, the Museum featured galleries for Dr. Hammer’s collections — old master paintings and drawings\, and a collection of works on paper by Honore Daumier and his contemporaries — as well as galleries for traveling exhibitions. Dr. Hammer passed away in December 1990\, three weeks after the opening of the Museum leaving many spaces unfinished. \nIn 1992\, the Museum began negotiations with its neighbor\, University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA)\, to assume the management and operations of the institution. In April 1994\, the partnership with UCLA was finalized and the following year the University relocated its collections and the staff of the Wight Art Gallery and the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts to the Hammer. The Museum also assumed responsibility for the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden\, located at the north end of the UCLA campus. \nHenry Hopkins\, then director of the Wight gallery and professor in the Department of Art\, became director of the Museum until his retirement in 1998. In 1999 Ann Philbin was named director and has developed a strong and original institutional identity and built a national and international reputation for thematic contemporary exhibitions\, scholarly historical exhibitions\, and contemporary artists’ projects. During her tenure the Hammer has formed a Hammer Contemporary Collection which now holds over 2\,000 artworks. In addition\, Philbin has overseen substantial renovations to the museum’s building\, including the completion of the 300-seat Billy Wilder Theater and museum café. With Philbin’s direction\, the museum instituted the internationally acclaimed Hammer Projects\, a series of more than one hundred contemporary exhibitions and installations featuring local\, national\, and international emerging artists. DESCRIPTION:FREE EVERYDAY- off PCH in Malibu\n\nThe Getty Villa houses the J. Paul Getty Museum’s collection.This collection antiquities includes over 1\,200 works are on view in 23 galleries devoted to the permanent collection along with five additional galleries for changing exhibitions.  There are objects dating from 6\,500 B.C. to A.D. 400. \nThe Getty Villa offers an incomparable setting for the study and enjoyment of the arts. The Villa weaves together art\, performances\, family activities\, lectures\, theater\, scholarship\, conservation. There are other activities to create an integrated educational and cultural experience for all ages. The museum serves as a gateway to the classical past for students\, scholars\, specialized professionals\, and general audiences. \n\nThe Getty Villa’s Architecture\n\nExplore the groundbreaking architecture of the Getty Center in this 45 minute docent-led tour of the site. \n \n \nGardens are integral to the setting of the Getty Villa\, as they were in the ancient Roman home. Open spaces around the site feature bronze sculptures\, fountains\, and lush plantings of trees\, herbs\, and flowers used by the Romans. In ancient Roman times\, the outer peristyle garden would have been used to converse with guests and for solo contemplation. \n \n\nThe Getty Villa is Closed Mondays\nAdmission to the Getty Villa is free for the whole family. Each Villa ticket allows you to bring up to three children ages 15 and under with you in one car. The Getty Villa offers special educational programs for children. A special Family Forum gallery offers activities\, including decorating Greek vases and projecting shadows onto a screen that represents a Greek urn. The gallery has polystyrene props from Greek and Roman culture for children to handle and use to cast shadows. Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. The land art movement first appeared in the late 1960s and served to challenge the location\, material\, size\, and temporal existence of a work of art. Double Negative consists of two long straight trenches\, 30 feet wide and 50 feet deep\, cut into the “tabletop” of Mormon Mesa\, displacing 240\,000 tons of desert sandstone. DESCRIPTION:NOW OPEN  FRIDAY – SUNDAY- Griffith Park\nGriffith Observatory is a free-admission facility located on the south side of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park. The building and grounds are accessible for all visitors. The building is busiest on weekends\, during summer and holiday periods\, and at sunset. \n\nGriffith Observatory’s grounds and roads are generally open the same hours as Griffith Park\, 5:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.\, every day. Access to Griffith Park is free\, though there is paid parking closest to the Observatory. There are public restrooms located next to the Observatory parking lot. Every show is presented by a live\, engaging storyteller\, and one of our three current shows is offered every 60 to 90 minutes each day the Observatory is open. \n\nPublic Telescopes\nthe Observatory offers many other stellar experiences while you visit. During the day\, you can see the live image of the Sun on our coelostat (solar telescope) in the Ahmanson Hall of the Sky. DESCRIPTION:NOW EXHIBITING – El Segundo Museum of Art\nExperience 51: TIME\, a project by artist and production designer Rick Carter\, is an immersive collage that contemplates the concept of time. The exhibition features paintings\, drawings\, and collages by Carter along with photographs\, movie memorabilia\, and additional works by eight other artists who were invited to participate. \nTIME envelops visitors in floor-to-ceiling layered imagery that extends 25 feet high and includes portraits by Carter hung from above on thirteen\, four-sided displays; ​​preliminary sketches and collages from his many production designs; and props and memorabilia including a park bench from which Forrest Gump narrated his life story. \nON DISPLAY UNTIL March 25\, 2023\n \nCarter\, a longtime painter\, is a two-time Academy Award®-winning production designer acclaimed for his work with directors including Steven Spielberg\, Robert Zemeckis\, James Cameron\, and J.J. Abrams. Often he has envisioned designs that convey notions of time itself\, including for the blockbuster films A.I. Artificial Intelligence\, Amistad\, Avatar\, Back to the Future\, Forrest Gump\, Jurassic Park\, Lincoln\, and Star Wars. \n \nFeatured as well in our TIME exhibition are pieces inspired by our visit to the Getty Research Institute with David Brafman. As curator of rare books for The Getty\, David was able to show our TIME artist collective books that express aspects of time—whether through their content or format. \n \n\n \n208 Main Street\, El Segundo\, California 90245 \n \nESMoA is an art laboratory located in El Segundo\, California and it is run by artlab21 Foundation\, a public non profit organization funded 100% by donations. \nOur mission is to Spread the Spark of Creativity with a focus on experimental exhibitions\, community engagement\, and arts education. The Air Museum’s educational programs give children an opportunity to see and touch the airplanes that made aviation history. The Western Museum of Flight’s collection includes numerous Warbirds\, aircraft and target drones\, piston and jet aircraft engines\, aircraft components\, aircraft ejection seats\, World War II instruments\, aircrew accessories\, and an extensive model aircraft collection. It houses not only historic aircraft\, many of which were built in Southern California\, but also has an extensive collection of historic photographs and blueprints. \n  \nThe WMOF is one of two museums that house the only surviving Jack Northrop flying wings. The museum has several other rare aircraft among its collection\, including: \n  \n \nNorth American F-86Sabre Jet \n \nNorthrop YF-17 “Cobra” (Prototype #1) \n \nThe Northrop N-3PB World War II single engine seaplane built in 1940.
