SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. For highlights of the Meteorite Gallery please click here. \n  \n  \n \n  \nWe are eager to add meteorites to the UCLA collection. If you have a meteorite collection and are interested in considering a donation\, we would like to hear from you. You can contact us here. \n \nLOCATION\nThe Meteorite Gallery is located in room 3697 of the Geology Building on the UCLA campus. \n595 Charles E. SUMMARY:Forest Lawn Museum
DESCRIPTION:NOW ON EXHIBIT – Forest Lawn Museum\, Glendale\nEnriching the community through artwork. The Forest Lawn Museum first opened in 1952 and is located adjacent to the Hall of Crucifixion-Resurrection at Forest Lawn – Glendale.  Forest Lawn’s founder\, Dr. Hubert Eaton\, wrote in his Builder’s Creed that our park should be “a place where artists study and sketch; where school teachers bring happy children to see the things they read of in books.” In that spirit\, the Forest Lawn Museum displays a permanent collection\, as well as world-class rotating exhibits. With engaging special exhibits and free educational and artistic activities\, there is always something new to experience. \n \nForest Lawn Museum is located within Forest Lawn-Glendale (1712 S. Glendale Ave\, Glendale\, CA 91205). Enter the main gate on Glendale Ave and follow signs to the top of the hill. Admission is free and there’s plenty of free parking!\nEmail museum@forestlawn.com to schedule your free group tour today. \nHealth and Safety Precautions\nFor the health and safety of visitors and staff\, wearing a mask indoors is recommended\, but no longer mandatory. A free face mask is available upon request. Touch-free hand-sanitizer stations are available for visitors. Thank you for helping us stay safe and healthy. We look forward to your visit! \n\nIn addition to the museum\, statues\, and architecture displayed around our parks. Forest Lawn offers several ongoing exhibits that are free to the public.\n \nThe Great Mausoleum at 100\nOn May 2\, 1920\, Forest Lawn dedicated the Great Mausoleum. On May 2\, 2020\, we recognize the centennial of this monumental building. Construction began in 1917 and only one level was complete at the dedication ceremony. The building now has 11 terraces\, dozens of sculptures\, and more than 100 stained glass windows. It has endured through the Great Depression\, World War II\, and into the 21st century. Even in the difficult times that we’re currently experiencing\, we look forward to another hundred years of history with the Great Mausoleum. \n\n \n1712 S Glendale Ave.\, Glendale\, CA 91205 \nSince our founding\, Forest Lawn has committed itself to providing outstanding service and beautiful environments for family outings\, remembering loved ones\, and commemorating holidays. Whether you are planning how to help your loved ones remember you\, memorializing someone special in your life\, or joining us for holiday events like Easter or Memorial Day\, we invite you to visit Forest Lawn. \n\nServing Families for More Than 100 Years\nSince its founding in 1906\, Forest Lawn has been an integral part of the community it serves. Our Founder\, Dr. Hubert Eaton\, profoundly changed the funeral business by transforming Forest Lawn Memorial-Park into a place for the living. By combining the mortuary and cemetery sides of the business\, Eaton achieved his goal\, making Forest Lawn a beautiful setting for services\, weddings\, baptisms\, and family excursions. After 100 years of service\, the Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks remain a place for the living and a true community resource. \nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Sunday: 10:00am – 5:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nforestlawn.com/museum\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:California African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair
DESCRIPTION:California African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair\nFREE! TUES – SUNDAY- Exposition Park\nThe California African American Museum (CAAM) focuses on enrichment and education on the cultural heritage and history of African Americans with a focus on California and western United States. \nAdmission is free to all visitors. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \nCalifornia African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair\n  \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \n  \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \n \n  \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \nCalifornia African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair\nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. Each quarter\, curators review the current holdings and decide as a committee on future acquisitions. We view our collection as a living body — constantly evolving\, growing\, and reflecting the world in which we live. \n \n  \nSome examples of CAAM’s collection include the Walter Burrell Collection of audio recordings of Burrell’s interviews with African American celebrities\, broadcast by a local radio station in the early 1970s; the oral histories of Celes King\, who was both a local civil rights activist as well as a former Tuskegee airman; and selections from the collection of visual artist John Outterbridge. \n  \n \nHours\nTuesdays – Saturdays: 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.\nSundays: 11:00 a.m.-5:00p.m.\nMondays: Closed \nCalifornia African American Museum (CAAM) Temporarily Closed For Repair\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncaamuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:FOWLER MUSEUM AT UCLA
DESCRIPTION:FREE EVERY DAY! @ UCLA\nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on works from Africa\, Asia\, the Pacific\, and the Americas—past and present. The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples\, cultures\, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions\, publications\, and public programs\, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented. \nAlso featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics\, culture and social action. \nFowler Museum at UCLA provides exciting\, informative and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAreas of the Collection\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF AFRICA AND THE AFRICAN DIASPORA\n \nOne of the largest and finest in the United States\, and one of the top twenty African collections worldwide\, this collection offers a superb representation of the arts of many African nations\, including objects from Senegal\, Nigeria\, Ghana\, Cameroon\, Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire)\, Kenya\, Zambia\, and South Africa. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns\, and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, notably arts of Haitian Vodou\, Brazil and Suriname. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Peubla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC \n \n  \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. The Museum is compliant with guidelines mandates by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and has been signaled out by the State of California for its exemplary efforts. \nArchaeological collection areas include: \nCalifornia \nCollections from approximately 1100 sites\, mostly in Southern California. \nSouthwest \nSignificant collections from the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley Expedition of 1933-1938 and several Parowan Fremont sites in Utah excavated in the 1950’s\, and other Anasazi and Hohokam sites. \nMexico \nIncludes objects from 218 sites\, mostly in western and central Mexico. \nSudan \nThe Nubian/Egyptian fortress site at Askut is the source of approximately 60\,000 artifacts excavated by UCLA archaeologist Alexander Badawy in conjunction with the Aswan High Dam Salvage Campaign\, 1962-1964. \nOld World stone tool collection \nIncludes tools from Europe and the Middle East. \n\n\nMUSEUM HOURS\n\n\n\n\nAdmission is FREE \nMonday: closed\nTuesday: closed\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\nThursday: 12 – 5pm\nFriday: 12 – 5pm\nSaturday: 12 – 5pm\nSunday: 12 – 5pm \n\n\n\n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfowler.ucla.edu\n \n\n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:50 Years of Water Color
DESCRIPTION:ON EXHIBIT – Santa Monica\nVisit California Heritage Museum as they exhibit 53 paintings by outstanding artists who were members of the California Water Color Society during its first fifty years! The exhibit will run from July 9 – October 30. \n \nCALIFORNIA WATERCOLOR SOCIETY THE FIRST 50 YEARS (1921-1971)\n\nOne hundred years ago a small group of Southern California artists formed the California Water Color Society and held their first exhibition at the Los Angeles Museum of History\, Science and Art. (The spelling at the time was “Water Color”. – two words – Which was common usage in the 1920s.) The founding members were all established\, professional artists. Artists in the exhibition include Marion Kavanaugh Wachtel\, Phil Dike\, Millard Sheets\, Phil Paradise\, Emil Kosa Jr.\, Edward Reep\, Ralph Hulett\, Wayne La Com\, Milford Zornes\, and Rex Brandt among others. Their stated goal in forming the CWCS was to elevate the watercolor medium “to the dignity it enjoyed under such great cultures as those of China and Persia”. \nFREE ADMISSION EVERY FRIDAY\nDuring the first 50 years this organization was in operation\, it was known as the California Water Color Society. After 1971 when larger numbers of artists from other parts of America joined the CWCS\, the board and members chose to change the society’s name to the National Watercolor Society. That name is used to this day to identify society. \nThis exhibition has been mounted to present select watercolors by outstanding artists who were members between 1921 and 1971 when the organization was known as the California Water Color Society. Many of the artists were either on the Board of Directors or served as jurors for society exhibitions during that fifty-year period of time. \n \nThe goal of this exhibition is to visually confirm the CWCS artists from that fifty-year period of time indeed succeeded in establishing Southern California as a center for the advancement of the watercolor medium; just as the founding members had hoped for when they formed the organization in 1921. This exhibition was curated by Gordon T. McClelland for the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University\, the originating exhibition site. \n\n \n2612 Main Street\, Santa Monica CA 90405 \nCALIFORNIA HERITAGE MUSEUM\nThe building that houses the California Heritage Museum is the Roy Jones House and is as interesting and unique as the exhibits themselves. \n \nIn the late 19th Century\, renowned architect Sumner P. Hunt built the home for Roy Jones\, son of the founder of Santa Monica Senator\, John Percival Jones. City Trustees granted Jones a permit to dig a cesspool on April 16\, 1894\, marking the first step taken in the construction of the house. One of Sumner P. Hunt’s earliest surviving buildings\, the Roy Jones home is designed in a style that transitions between the elaborate Victorian Queen Anne Revival to the more simple American Colonial or Georgian Revival. \n   \nThe beauty and grace of the first buildings were documented in the 1894 May publication of ‘Outlook’: “Five new residences\, ranging in cost from $3\,000 to $5\,000\, are now in the course of construction in Santa Monica. Those of Messrs. Roy Jones and Kennelly\, on Ocean Avenue\, is about completed. They are all handsome structures\, and show that there is to be no deterioration in architectural styles in our growing city by the sea.” The June 30\, 1894 edition further reinforced this appreciation: “Sumner P. Hunt\, architect\, of Los Angeles\, had made his ‘imprint’ upon this town in a pleasant way that is not excelled by anyone who has ever ‘struck’ it. He designed the residence of Mr. Roy Jones. They are all neat\, slightly edifices\, and are a gratifying step in advancing the style of our architecture.”  \n \nThe permanent exhibition at the museum includes photographs of the extraordinary move to Main Street\, the Jones family\, and an Ostrich Farm that made up a great deal of Ocean Park in 1893.\n \nThe California Heritage Museum is committed to promoting the diversity and rich history of California’s heritage through exhibitions\, lectures\, publications\, and community events. \n\nADMISSION\n\n\nGeneral Admission: $10.00    \nSeniors & Students: $5.00 \nMembers & children under 12: Free \nMilitary and Veterans: Free \n\n\n\nGROUP TOURS\nThe Museum welcomes visitors of all ages\, however\, to allow everyone to get the most from their visit\, special school and group tours are by appointment only. \n\nMuseum Hours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday: 6:00pm – 9:00pm in conjunction with food trucks\nWednesday – Sunday: 11:00am – 4:00pm\, Last Tour at 3:30pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncaliforniaheritagemuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. SUMMARY:Buffalo Soldiers in CA
DESCRIPTION:NOW ON EXHIBIT- CAAM\, Expositions Park\nWitness as California African American Museum opens exhibit on “For Race and Country: Buffalo Soldiers in California”\, on display until October 30. \nBuffalo Soldiers have been mythologized in movies\, television programs\, and popular songs. Despite this romanticism\, the history of Buffalo Soldiers is complex\, and their stories are relevant and worthy of deeper understanding. \nFor Race and Country: Buffalo Soldiers in California explores the surprising history surrounding all-Black US Army regiments whose members—both in and out of uniform—left powerful traces in the Golden State. Venturing beyond myths\, the exhibition confronts the role of Black soldiers in the Army’s history of violence against Native American people\, explores historical debates in the Black community over participation in wars\, and exposes cracks in a society permeated by racism\, in which African American soldiers faced the searing conflict between commitment to equality for their people and to the country they chose to serve. Such is the “double life” African Americans live\, in the words of scholar W.E.B. Du Bois\, including in the armed forces. \nThrough artifacts\, audio interviews\, photographs\, historical records\, period uniforms\, newspapers\, musical scores\, and media representations\, the exhibition presents a sweeping narrative of Black soldiers and their families who made California home during the era of government-sanctioned racial segregation in the US military. For Race and Country highlights Californians\, from Northern California to the Mexican border\, whose little-known influence transformed the state\, and the nation. \nFor Race and Country: Buffalo Soldiers in California is curated by Susan D. Anderson\, history curator\, with consultant Anthony J. Powell and researcher Caroline Collins. \nCAAM recently interviewed Susan D. Anderson and Anthony Powell about this exhibition: \n\n\n600 State Drive\, Exposition Park\, Los Angeles\, California 90037 \nFREE! TUES – SUNDAY- Exposition Park\nThe California African American Museum (CAAM) focuses on enrichment and education on the cultural heritage and history of African Americans with a focus on California and western United States. \n \nAdmission is free to all visitors. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. \n \nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. Each quarter\, curators review the current holdings and decide as a committee on future acquisitions. We view our collection as a living body — constantly evolving\, growing\, and reflecting the world in which we live. \n \nSome examples of CAAM’s collection include the Walter Burrell Collection of audio recordings of Burrell’s interviews with African American celebrities\, broadcast by a local radio station in the early 1970s; the oral histories of Celes King\, who was both a local civil rights activist as well as a former Tuskegee airman; and selections from the collection of visual artist John Outterbridge. \n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Saturday: 10:00am – 5:00pm\nSunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncaamuseum.org/exhibitions\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Santa Monica History Museum
DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. Though physically erased\, Broadway lives on in the stories that are preserved and shared to illuminate past inequities and spotlight the inspirational individuals who created a center of social and civic life on their own terms. \n\nAdmissions\n\nGeneral – $5.00\nSeniors & Students – $5.00\nChildren under 12 – Free\nMuseum members – Free\nVeterans & Active-duty military – Free \n\nHours\nMonday – Wednesday: Closed\nThursday: 3:00pm – 8:00pm\nFriday – Sunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \nMuseum Holiday Hours\nWe are closed in observance of the following holidays: New Year’s Day\, President’s Day\, Easter\, Memorial Day\, July 4th\, Labor Day\, Thanksgiving\, and the day after\, Christmas \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nsantamonicahistory.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

Like monuments and national anthems\, they intend to create a sense of identity-based on a shared past\, present\, and future. \nLike many other governments\, the communist countries of the twentieth century produced an abundance of flags and banners. They were omnipresent at military parades\, sports events\, and public gatherings. Apart from national flags\, many organizations produced their own richly decorated flags and banners. The Wende Museum holds over 2\,000 of these ornamental textiles in its collection. \nMartin Roemers: Relics of the Cold War\n \nDuring an eleven-year period\, from 1998 through 2009\, Dutch photographer Martin Roemers photographed the structural and topographic remnants of the Cold War in both the East and West. His research took him to Russia\, Poland\, Czech Republic\, Ukraine\, Latvia\, Lithuania\, Great Britain\, Netherlands\, Belgium\, and Germany\, where he documented underground tunnels\, abandoned army bases\, military training areas\, rotting tanks\, and destroyed monuments. \nLight–guard–house: Installation by Farrah Karapetian\n \nThe 20-square-foot aluminum guardhouse that sat outside the ADN headquarters in East Berlin from 1971–92 is both an artifact of an atmosphere of mistrust and representative of past and current political protectionism. Artist Farrah Karapetian will turn this structure into a lighthouse\, changing a gesture of suspicion into a gesture of welcome. The windows of the guardhouse will be tinted in a rainbow gradient encompassing all of the colors potentially included in national flags. Over the course of Wende’s concurrent exhibition\, The Medium is the Message: Flags and Banners\, Karapetian will engage with the public about experiences they have had as migrants. As the stories accumulate and become available on the museum’s website\, the light inside the lighthouse will pause at the various colors associated with the flags of the respective national borders crossed. Rather than the finality of immigration\, the artist’s focus is the prevalence of migration\, asking visitors: What experiences of welcome or mistrust have occurred as you have moved internationally? How have they colored your life in their wake? \n\n \n10808 Culver Blvd.\, Culver City\, CA 90230 \n \nThe Wende is an art museum\, historical archive of the Cold War\, and center for creative community engagement that explores and inspires change.  \nThe Wende reaches beyond the conventional walls of a museum and places equal value on an international scholarship\, community engagement\, digital access\, and wide-ranging experimentation. \nWende is a German word meaning “turning point” or “change” that has come to describe the transformative period around the fall of the Berlin Wall. Founded in 2002\, the Wende Museum holds an unparalleled collection of art and artifacts from the Cold War era\, which serves as a foundation for programs that illuminate political and cultural changes of the past\, offer opportunities to make sense of a  changing present\, and inspire active participation in personal and social change for a better future. \nThe Wende fulfills its mission of exploring and inspiring change through \n\ncollecting\, preserving\, and providing open access to artwork\, artifacts\, archives\, films\, and personal histories from the sphere touched by socialism during the Cold War era (1945– 1991);\npromoting rigorous scholarship\, educating students\, and stimulating general interest through lectures\, symposia\, publications\, and providing access to digitized collections;\npresenting experimental exhibitions and interdisciplinary programming inspired by the collection;\nfacilitating creative collaborations with contemporary artists and designers;\npartnering with other nonprofit organizations; and\nproviding community services such as wellness programs\, opportunities for civic engagement\, and family-friendly activities.\n\nCore Strengths\n\n\nThe Wende Museum’s collection and intellectual activities have achieved notable strength in four areas of specialization: German Democratic Republic; Wende Moments; Personal Histories and Everyday Life; and Public and Private Interaction. \n\nHours\nMonday – Thursday: Closed\nFriday – Sunday: 10:00am – 5:00pm \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.wendemuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The Venice Oceanarium
DESCRIPTION:SUNDAYS- Venice Beach Pier\nVenice Oceanarium EVERY SUNDAY\, 11am – 2pm. @ Venice Pier. A Museum without Walls teaches kids about Marine Biology & the Santa Monica Bay!  \nOur oceanographic display includes rare specimens\, shark jaws\, and historical artifacts. Be a Citizen Scientist and help us gather ocean data from our water testing kits. Observe grains of sand and seawater samples under our microscopes. Read ocean-inspired poetry\, draw\, and learn about the sea life just beneath the pier. We have new enlightening programs every week. \nThe pier juts 1000 feet out over the open sea\, with saltwater breezes and spectacular coastline views! Besides our marine specimens\, you’ll see migratory birds perched on the pilings\, dolphins\, interesting catches reeled in\, and local surfer species. \n \nThe Venice Oceanarium is a non-profit based in Venice Beach\, California. Just steps away from the world-famous Venice Boardwalk\, there are ecosystems teeming with wildlife waiting to be explored. Since 1995\, countless people have enjoyed our outdoor classrooms through hands-on learning. \nOUR MISSION is to ignite a passion for the abundance\, diversity\, and significance of the web of life in our ocean and its shores. The Venice Oceanarium emphasizes the powerful and enduring emotional and aesthetic influences of the oceans on human culture. \nOUR VISION is to build a permanent exhibit on the Venice Pier that educates and inspires visitors about the unique and wondrous life forms in our local ocean. \n\nAbout Venice Oceanarium\nBack in 1995 our founder\, Tim Rudnick\, organized a weekend-long marathon reading of Moby-Dick at the Venice Beach breakwater. Reliving life aboard a whaling ship and Melville’s soul-searching journey while the group huddled for warmth on the sand was a transformative experience. Tim realized the importance of learning outside of the traditional classroom and founded the Venice Oceanarium\, a Museum Without Walls. \n \nThis concept of blending the arts and sciences is the core of our programming. We believe that our integrative curriculum inspires kids of all ages to be stewards of our precious oceans. \nOver the years we’ve expanded our outreach to include our highly anticipated annual grunion party\, weekly Marine Biology pop-up labs at the end of the Venice Pier\, classes at local schools and youth centers\, tidepool talks\, wetland walks\, and other excursions. \nVenice Beach: An Urban Coastal Park\n \nVenice Beach is a wonderful juxtaposition of urban life and natural wonder. Just steps from the world-famous Venice Beach Boardwalk’s street artists and performers are miles of beautiful shoreline to explore. Wide sandy beaches\, crashing waves\, shells\, seaweed\, birds\, and other wildlife coexist with surfers\, sunbathers\, and sandcastles. \nThe tidepools at the Venice Beach Breakwater are teeming with wildlife (to be enjoyed with your eyes only) as the iconic and colorful Venice graffiti walls loom in the background. There’s a secret reef\, and beautiful wetlands\, and on a clear day\, you can see Malibu and Catalina Island. \nMillions of locals and visitors enjoy our beaches. Few stop to really appreciate the rare treasures it has to offer. Our mission is to excite\, engage and inspire kids of all ages to appreciate our unique urban coast. \nExperiential Learning\n \nThe Venice Oceanarium is a Museum Without Walls. Our programs combine science with the arts to encourage kids (of all ages) to appreciate the environment and therefore become stewards of our oceans. We believe that this integrative curriculum of poetry\, literature\, music\, drawing\, and performance arts teaches by experiencing the world around us on a more profound level than books and classrooms alone provide. \nWe design our events and activities to raise awareness of the natural wonders of Venice Beach. Join us on our learning expedition! \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.veniceoceanarium.org/programs\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The FOWLER MUSEUM: Reflecting Culture
DESCRIPTION:ON PERMANENT DISPLAY- Westwood Village\, UCLA\nUCLA Fowler Museum presents\n\n\nReflecting Culture: The Francis E. Cowler\, Jr. Collection of Silver\n \nComprising 251 objects representing 16th through 19th century Europe\, Great Britain\, and the United States\, this exhibition interprets silver in its social contexts. Gleaming vessels from renowned workshops—such as those of British silversmith Paul de Lamerie (c.1800)\, Russian jeweler Karl Fabergé (c.1900)\, and American patriot silversmith Paul Revere (c.1760)—highlight important styles and techniques. \n\n\n  \n\n\n308 Charles E. Young Dr N\, Los Angeles\, CA 90024 \n\nFREE EVERY DAY! @ UCLA\nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA explores global arts and cultures with an emphasis on works from Africa\, Asia\, the Pacific\, and the Americas—past\, and present. The Fowler enhances understanding and appreciation of the diverse peoples\, cultures\, and religions of the world through dynamic exhibitions\, publications\, and public programs\, informed by interdisciplinary approaches and the perspectives of the cultures represented. \nAlso featured is the work of international contemporary artists presented within the complex frameworks of politics\, culture\, and social action. \nFowler Museum at UCLA provides exciting\, informative\, and thought-provoking exhibitions and events for the UCLA community and the people of greater Los Angeles and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAreas of the Collection\n\n\n\n\nARTS OF AFRICA AND THE AFRICAN DIASPORA\n \nOne of the largest and finest in the United States\, and one of the top twenty African collections worldwide\, this collection offers a superb representation of the arts of many African nations\, including objects from Senegal\, Nigeria\, Ghana\, Cameroon\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire)\, Kenya\, Zambia\, and South Africa. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns and sophisticated divination regalia. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, and notable arts from Haitian Vodou\, Brazil\, and Suriname. \n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n\n\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Puebla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross-section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and the Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India\, and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. The Museum is compliant with guidelines mandated by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and has been signaled out by the State of California for its exemplary efforts. \nArchaeological collection areas include: \nCalifornia \nCollections from approximately 1100 sites\, mostly in Southern California. \nSouthwest \nSignificant collections from the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley Expedition of 1933-1938 and several Parowan Fremont sites in Utah were excavated in the 1950s\, and other Anasazi and Hohokam sites. \n\n\nMUSEUM HOURS\n\nAdmission is FREE \nMonday – Tuesday: closed\nWednesday – Sunday: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm \n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfowler.ucla.edu\n \n\n  \nFind more

Experience #TheBroadFromHome to find inspiration through music\, poetry\, performance\, workshops\, and conversations centered around the Broad collection. \nOverview \nPerformances \nTalks & Conversations \nArtist Spotlight \nFamily Art Workshops \nMore Online Programs \n  \nThe Broad Collection\nEli and Edythe Broad have been building their collection of postwar and contemporary art over the last 50 years. With a belief that the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made\, the Broads took to collecting art of their own time. \nThe Broad is home to 2\,000 works in the Broad collection by more than 200 artists\, and is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. The collection features in-depth holdings of influential contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Mark Bradford\, Jasper Johns\, Jeff Koons\, Barbara Kruger\, Yayoi Kusama\, Kerry James Marshall\, Julie Mehretu\, Takashi Murakami\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, Cindy Sherman\, Cy Twombly\, Andy Warhol\, and more\, plus an ever-growing representation of younger artists. \n  \nView Our Collection Here\n \nIn Under the Table\, 1994\, the viewer is both in the world of imaginary giants and in the world of remembered childhood. When standing close to it\, one’s own distorted reflection bends around smooth pert curves. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission is Free\nAll visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance.
