SUMMARY:Hollywood Heritage Museum
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY FRIDAY-SUNDAY- Hollywood\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum\, is located in the Lasky-DeMille Barn\, which was built in 1901.  The story of the early Hollywood motion picture industry and the historic Hollywood community is told through archival photographs\, historic documents\, movie props and related memorabilia.  Visitors experience the actual structure where Cecil B. DeMille’s office exists\, furnished with selected personal DeMille belongings\, and where countless movies were filmed and studio staff worked and played. \nOn December 27\, 1956\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was designated California State Historic Landmark No. 554\, recognizing the significant role the building played in the birth of the Hollywood motion picture industry.  Since 1985\, Hollywood Heritage\, Inc. has funded the preservation\, restoration and maintenance of the barn. It’s the oldest existing motion picture production building in Hollywood\, having been established as the Burns-Revier Studio in 1912\, and becoming the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company in 1913.  The Lasky Company merged with Adolph Zuckor’s Famous Players in 1916\, becoming Famous Players-Lasky and merging with Paramount Distributing Company\, finally becoming Paramount Pictures Corporation. In 2014\, the Lasky-DeMille Barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [See the Time Line on the Museum link for a more detailed history of the barn]. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVISITING THE MUSEUM\nThe Hollywood Heritage Museum is open Friday\, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4 pm. As we share our ample parking lot with the Hollywood Bowl\, the museum is occasionally closed when the Bowl has an event.  If you are traveling a long way to visit us\, it might be a good idea to phone first to make sure we are open: (323) 874-2276. \n\n\nPARKING\nParking is free. There is a large parking area on the east side of Highland Avenue\, in front of the museum.  There is no entrance facing Highland Avenue.  You have to go around the corner either on Milner Road or Odin Street and immediately turn into the lot.  If there are parking lot attendants at a barricade\, tell them that you are visiting the museum. \nPUBLIC TRANSPORTATION\nThe Metro subway station closest to the Museum is the Hollywood-Highland stop.  We are located approximately a half-mile north on Highland Avenue\, about a 12-minute walk. \nBECOME A DOCENT:\nHollywood Heritage is a volunteer driven organization. Our docents assist museum guests and help with our Barn programs\, as well as many other activities associated with historic preservation issues and the day-to-day activities that make our organization so vital.  If you are interested in becoming involved\, click here. \n  \n \nHOLLYWOOD HERITAGE ARCHIVE:\nHollywood Heritage maintains an archive of historic photographs\, documents\, and other material related to the film industry and the community.  Our archive also includes considerable holdings on Hollywood real estate history and buildings of architectural significance.  We continue to seek material related to our dual mission of industry and community history.  Questions regarding our archive and donations procedures should be directed to our Collections Manager\, Richard Adkins. \nDONATION OF PHYSICAL ITEMS:\nHollywood Heritage welcomes donations both monetary and physical objects.  Donated items fall into two categories. \nFor resale in the Museum Store:  The museum store contains new and used items.  The older items are all donated to Hollywood Heritage and include books on the motion picture industry and its participants\, and books on the Los Angeles area.  It also includes used DVDs\, VHS tapes and other electronic storage of motion pictures\, as well as related items. These types of donated items can be dropped off at the museum along with the donor’s name and address so that\, if desired\, donor recognition and/or a tax letter can be provided by the Collections Manager. \nFor Hollywood Heritage Archive:  These are items that Hollywood Heritage’s curator agrees are compatible with our collection.  An appointment may be set up with our Collections Manager.  Much of the collection has been donated by individuals and families with relatives who contributed to the film industry and the Hollywood community\, often with the goal of preserving their relatives’ participation in Hollywood. DESCRIPTION:EVERY SUNDAY – Los Angeles\nVisit The African American Firefighter Museum! The African American Firefighter Museum is dedicated to promote diversity and to stand up for inequality against all races and genders. \nThe first floor contains vintage fire apparatus\, stories and pictures of pioneering African American Los Angeles Firefighters. The Museum gallery is located on the second floor with pictures\, artifacts and other memorabilia of African American Firefighters from around the country. \nOPEN EVERY SUNDAY FROM 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm\n \n\n\n1401 S Central Ave\, Los Angeles\, CA 90021 \n\nHISTORY\nThe AAFFM opened it’s doors as a Museum on December 13\, 1997. The dedication of the Museum also served as the acknowledgement of what was believed to be the city’s first 100 years of service by African American Firefighters (1897-1997). In 2002\, the Los Angeles Times contacted the AAFFM and stated they had discovered factual information to indicate the history started before 1897 with a man named Sam Haskins\, who was listed as the first Los Angeles Fireman of African decent when he was hired in 1892 and killed while responding to a fire in 1895. \nToday the Museum is open to the public and is strictly volunteer and donation driven. It is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization and it is available for use by organizations and individuals that desire to host events such as; meetings\, luncheons\, dinners\, banquets\, book signings\, film viewings\, jazz festivals\, social dances\, receptions and retreats. Our beloved historian\, 96 year old retired Firefighter Arnett Hartsfield\, who passed away in 2014 was our most cherished volunteer. As a Los Angeles Firefighter during the 1940s and 50’s he lead the integration of the Los Angeles Fire Department. As a graduate of USC law school\, he and his fellow firemen known as the Stentorians\, the NAACP and the local community were instrumental in successfully integrating the LAFD. DESCRIPTION:OPEN THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Santa Monica\nThe Santa Monica History Museum was founded under the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975 and by a public poll\, with their goal to collect\, preserve\, and be the caretaker of history. Its name at that time was the Santa Monica Historical Society and it was designated as the official collector and preserver of the history\, art\, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area. Former Mayor Clo Hoover\, the first woman mayor of Santa Monica\, was elected the first president. \n\nThe museum\, one of the largest in the country for a city the size of Santa Monica\, has grown far beyond expectations with an expansive collection of artifacts\, photographs\, and memorabilia. Thousands of hours have been dedicated to public education and museum services. \n \nWith the help of Louise and Bob Gabriel who had been active in the community for years and had a strong love for Santa Monica and its history took on the responsibility to make the museum a reality.  Within three years\, with determination\, perseverance\, and countless hours of work\, Bob headed the fundraising committee and raised the necessary funds. Louise was able to get all the furnishings for the museum donated by companies that were going out of business. Bob found a temporary rent‐free location on Colorado Avenue. \n\n\nOur Mission\nThe Santa Monica History Museum’s mission is to collect\, preserve and share the history and culture of Santa Monica for generations to come. \n\n\n\n\nOur Vision\nThe Santa Monica History Museum is the steward of the rich history of the Santa Monica Bay area. We are committed to enriching our community by providing public access to our extensive collection with interpretive exhibitions\, public programs\, community partnerships\, and through archival and research services. \n\n\n\nCURRENT EXHIBITION FROM APRIL 1 – DECEMBER 23\, 2022\nBroadway to Freeway:\nLife and Times of a Vibrant Community\n \nIn the mid-20th century\, the Broadway neighborhood was a thriving\, tight-knit community in Santa Monica. Built by African American\, Mexican American\, and immigrant communities\, the Broadway neighborhood was a haven for those who were excluded from other parts of the city by racist and anti-immigrant policies and practices. \nThis exhibition tells the story of how residents built Broadway into a flourishing community of color – and how the Interstate 10 freeway destroyed it in the 1960s. The vibrant lives of pioneering individuals – like the first African American teacher and social worker hired in Santa Monica – are knitted into the neighborhood they built together. The community populated Broadway with welcoming schools\, homes\, and businesses – from beauty parlors and jazz clubs\, to the malt shop\, tortilleria\, and Jewish deli. \n \nFeaturing period photographs\, advertisements\, oral histories\, and songs\, the exhibition draws on the wealth of archival material collected by the Quinn Research Center\, which is dedicated to preserving the history of African American life in Santa Monica. \nToday\, little evidence remains of the community on the blocks between 13th Street and 20th Street\, once the heart of the Broadway neighborhood. It’s got it all: a disconnected\, alienated (largely white) American working class\, fake news\, an incipient fascist cabal and\, of course\, mobs. In Capra and Riskin’s telling\, the parting shot of a disgruntled reporter (Barbara Stanwyck)—a manifesto in the form of a suicide note\, written by a fictional everyman—inadvertently launches a nationwide political movement after her nervous newspaper finds a patsy to play the everyman (Gary Cooper). Outwardly well-intentioned\, the movement is quickly co-opted by corrupt autocrats bent on seizing power. Even Capra and Riskin’s struggle—and ultimate failure—to bring their nihilistic vision to a satisfying resolution seems to resonate with today’s headlines. \n35mm\, b&w\, 129 min. A Hollywood paean to the pleasures of small town life and the simple grace of being median\, Magic Town finds the forces of change— Jane Wyman’s crusading editor—and the forces of stasis—James Stewart’s cynical pollster—locked in flirtatious combat over the fate of Grandview\, a pleasant burg that Stewart discovers perfectly reflects the aggregate opinions of the nation as a whole. From the earliest silent films requiring variable speed projection all the way up to cutting-edge digital cinema\, the Wilder can accommodate an array of screen technologies. \nThe theater’s modern design by Michael Maltzan Architecture stylishly interprets cinema’s play of light and movement in real space\, and the 285-seat interior features comfortable leather seats with superb sightlines. The theater is made possible by a generous gift from Audrey L. Wilder and named in honor of Mrs. Wilder’s late husband\, the legendary screenwriter\, director and producer. Born on the outskirts of the Austro-Hungarian empire\, Billy Wilder fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s to become a master of Hollywood film language and a shrewd comic observer of the American scene. Among the many classics Wilder co-wrote and directed were Double Indemnity (1944)\, Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Some Like It Hot (1959). \n\nPlease note that food is not permitted inside the theater.
