SUMMARY:Minecraft Virtual Service
DESCRIPTION:MONDAY – Virtual Event\nJoin this Self-Guided Virtual Service Experience – Minecraft March on Washington on Monday\, January 16\, 2023\, from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm! Tour a virtual exhibit of the historic 1963 March on Washington through the world of Minecraft to interact with Civil Rights leaders like Dr. King himself and activists who are continuing Dr. King’s legacy today. \n\n\n\nA SPECIAL MINECRAFT MLK DAY PROJECT: \n\nMeet the activists from the historic 1963 March on Washington who paved the way for change against systemic racism and current activists who are continuing Dr. King’s legacy today.\n\n \nLOCATION: This opportunity takes place online on Saturday (1/14) from 10:00 AM PST – 9:00 PM PST and will re-open on Monday (1/16). You will be emailed a link to participate after signing up\, and our L.A. Works team will show you how to access the exhibit on the day of the event. \nFor those who have already registered\, you should have received a link from the opportunity coordinator (natalie@laworks.com) on Thursday (1/12). Please check your spam folder before emailing natalie@laworks.com\, if you cannot find the invitation. \nMLK DAY OF SERVICE: This is a part of L.A. Works’ MLK Jr. Day of Service 2022 event to honor Dr. King’s life and legacy through service. The event builds upon the anti-racism movement through an interactive March on Washington in Minecraft and in-person event at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on 1/16 . Sign up for one or more activities at laworks.com/mlk. \nWHY: MLK Day of Service is a defining moment each year when Americans across the country step up to make our communities more equitable and take action. Dr. King believed that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” as he fought for systemic change. His example is our call to action. \nVideo games\, an important means of human connection\, have become especially valuable during this pandemic. With 126 million people playing Minecraft monthly\, we have the opportunity to leverage this platform to create the infrastructure for a whole new level of volunteer participation. This year\, we’ll inspire the next generation of activists by giving them a platform to listen to the voices that spoke before them and give them a space for their voices to be heard as well. \nTHE EXPERIENCE: Volunteers will first meet our L.A. Works team to receive a short introduction about the exhibit and troubleshoot any technical issues. Afterward\, our team will give volunteers a tour of the virtual space\, introduce them to non-player character versions of past and present activists\, and give them a chance to build an activism-centric model of their own. Please note: this opportunity is self-guided and can be done on the participants’ own time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://volunteer.laworks.com/opportunity\n \n  \nFind more

Founded in 1942 by James Farmer and Quakers\, CORE launched an aggressive attack on segregation during World War II. Quickly rising to prominence\, CORE became one of the “Big Three” organizations that reshaped America in the 20th century. \nWhile all three played vital roles\, CORE distinguished itself through its pioneering use of nonviolent tactics. They initiated the Freedom Rides and sit-ins of the 1940s and 50s\, even inspiring Dr. King’s adoption of non-violence in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. CORE’s vanguard\, including Schwerner\, Goodman\, Chaney\, and Liuzzo\, bravely faced arrests\, beatings\, and even death while registering voters in the 1950s and 60s. \nMeanwhile\, CORE-CA championed equality in the North\, tackling fair housing\, employment\, and education issues. We played a key role in establishing federal and state agencies for these causes\, but remain vigilant\, monitoring their effectiveness spearheading the fight against police abuse\, and securing education as a fundamental right for our youth. \nBeyond these ongoing efforts\, CORE-CA tackles the rising tensions between Black and Hispanic youth through research and community engagement. Additionally\, we prioritize building self-esteem and academic skills among African American students facing increasing barriers to higher education and career opportunities. In all these endeavors\, CORE-CA collaborates with diverse stakeholders across public and private sectors\, determined to build a more just and equitable future for all. \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nkingdomdayparade.org\n \n  \nFind more
