The garden is open to the public for enjoyment seven days a week between 10am and 4pm unless there is a special event. The Garden also serves as a unique and elegant venue for weddings\, photo shoots\, memorial services and other private events. \n\n\n\nHistory\n\nEstablished in 1981. \nA centerpiece of the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center\, the Garden also known as Seiryu-en or the Garden of the Clear Stream\, was constructed by more than 200 volunteers who contributed more than 3\,000 man-hours. The garden was designed by landscape architect Dr. Takeo Uesugi and received the National Landscape Award in 1981\, the nation’s highest award for environmental improvement and community beautification. Most recently\, the James Irvine Japanese Garden underwent a major restoration with the purpose of creating a revitalized green space in downtown Los Angeles and sharing the aesthetics of Japanese culture with the community. The James Irvine Garden has served the community\, for nearly three decades\, by providing a tranquil and elegant departure from the urban landscape. It is the intent of the Board of Directors\, staff\, members and volunteers of the Japanese American Community & Cultural Center that this tradition be maintained for the benefit of all. \n\n\n\n\n100 North Central Avenue\, Los Angeles\, California 90012 \n \nJapanese American National Museum is the first gallery in the United States dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry as an integral part of U.S. story. Through its comprehensive collection of objects\, images and documents\, as well as multi-faceted exhibitions\, educational programs\, documentaries and publications. The Japanese American Museum is admission free every Thursday from 5–8 p.m. \nAlso on the third Thursday of every month\, the Japanese American Museum is FREE ALL DAY!\n \nAmericans of Japanese Ancestry\nThe Japanese American Museum was established in Los Angeles to preserve the rich heritage Asian culture. The gallery is dedicated to preserving the history and culture. The Nisei Week Foundation is a nonprofit organization that produces the annual festival which celebrates Japanese and Japanese American culture in the historic Little Tokyo community of Los Angeles. \n2022 NISEI WEEK SCHEDULE\n\n\n\n\n\nJULY 17 Opening Ceremony — Invitation Only\n\n\n1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Japanese American National Museum (JANM)\n\nGuests celebrate the beginning of the festival\, preview ondo dances choreographed for Nisei Week\, and are introduced to the year’s honorees and queen candidates. \n\n\n\nAUGUST 2 to AUGUST 11 Parade Dances and Street Dancing Practice\n\n\n6:30pm – 9:00pm JACCC Plaza\n\nAugust 2\, 4\, 9\, 11 (6:30pm-9:00pm) \n\n\n\nAUGUST 13 to AUGUST 14 – Cultural Exhibits \n\n\n11:00am – 4:00pm JACCC\n\nCultural exhibits such as bonsai\, calligraphy\, Ikebana\, and more will be on display inside the JACCC. \n\n\n\nAUGUST 13 – Coronation\n\n\n3:00pm – 6:00pm Aratani Theatre\n\nThe Nisei Week court candidates show off the results of their training and vie to be crowned the 2022 Nisei Week Queen \n\n\n\nAUGUST 14 – Grand Parade\n\n\n4:00pm – 6:00pm Little Tokyo\n\nThe streets of Little Tokyo are filled with Japanese dancers\, musicians\, floats\, and more! \n\n\n\nAUGUST 15 – Awards Dinner\n\n\n6:00 pm – 8:30 pm Double Tree by Hilton\n\nRecognizing community individuals who go above and beyond – including the Frances K.
