You’re in for a festive evening under the stars. \nThe show starts at 6:00 pm. Set times TBD. \nPlease RSVP at Eventbrite \n \nDiscos Rolas presents Mexico City’s Grupo Kual? celebrating more than twenty years pioneering cumbia sonidera and infusing it with regional Mexican and tropical Caribbean sounds. Grupo Kual? continues the “Dinastía Pedraza” family legacy which begins with the legendary Super Grupo Colombia in the 1970s. They perform across Mexico\, the United States and Latin America from the Los Angeles Sports Arena to the Plaza de Toros Mexico\, to Mexico City’s Zócalo\, Teatro Metropolitan\, and for the immigrants rights protest on May 1st\, 2006 in San Jose\, CA. They have scored chart success with the singles “Rumba Kimbumba\,” “Las Mujeres No Se Akaban\,” “Rumba Cha Cha Cha\,” “Soy Maraquero\,” “La Chicharrita del Kafé\,” and “El Pájaro Zinzontle.” Their albums have sold in the millions. Aaron Frazer\, the Brooklyn-based songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, and co-lead singer/drummer for Durand Jones & The Indications will be performing as well as Norman Carter of The Delfonics\, Modern Funkster’s Diamond Ortiz\, and Moniquea will be joining as well as songstresses Irene Diaz and Itzcalli Marie. \nArt Laboe (1925 – 2022) was a pioneering disc jockey\, songwriter\, record producer\, and radio station owner whose legacy and impact includes introducing rock and R&B to Los Angeles airwaves\, helping end segregation in Southern California\, and coining the term “Oldies But Goodies” through his beloved radio show. \nHis dedication show “Art Laboe Connection” was an institution\, because it facilitated communication amongst the community for decades. He was known for providing listeners the opportunity to dedicate songs to their loved ones\, sometimes behind bars or far from home. His show stood out among the rest of mainstream radio because instead of following a rigid playlist\, he incorporated lesser-known gems and deep cuts from various musical genres\, such as doo-wop\, R&B\, and sweet soul\, making each episode of the Art Laboe Connection a heartfelt experience. \nLos Angeles Legend and community unifier Art Laboe passed away in October 2022\, and although he isn’t with us in the physical realm\, we want to celebrate what would have been his 98th birthday (August 7th) by dedicating an entire evening to performances of his most played radio requests. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Upcoming Performances Include:\n \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ngrandperformances.org/events\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

Inheriting the powerful vocal range of her gospel-singing African American father and the resilient spirit of her mother’s Cherokee/Shawnee/Choctaw culture\, Redbone broadens the boundaries of American Roots music. With songs and storytelling that share her life experience as a Native and Black woman and mother in the new millennium\, Redbone gives voice to issues of social justice\, bridging traditions from past to present\, connecting cultures\, and celebrating the human spirit. \nHer album The Garden of Love- Songs of William Blake\, produced by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder/ Grammy Winner John McEuen is an unexpected twist — “a brilliant collision of cultures” (The New Yorker) — Redbone’s magnificent voice\, Blake’s immortal words\, and a masterful cornucopia of roots music (blues\, gospel\, bluegrass\, soul and traditional Southeastern Woodlands). Featured on All Things Considered the album released on her own imprint Blackfeet Productions rose to the Top Ten on Amazon Folk Charts for many weeks and has become the bedrock of her live shows bringing audiences to their feet with her fiery old time mountain gospel singing and foot-stomping energy. \n \nRedbone is Composer for the Public Theater’s 2019 production of “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow is Enuff”\, a revival/reimagining of the 1976 classic choreopoem by the late Ntozake Shange. Rave reviews with notable mentions for Redbone’s original compositions and score “supreme music… brilliant” (NY Daily News). The Redbone and Whitby’s newest work is BONE HILL\, an interdisciplinary musical theater work inspired by the lives of Redbone’s family in the hills of coal-mining Appalachia. Bone Hill is a recipient of the NEFA National Theater Project Creation and Touring Grant and National Performance Network Creation Fund. \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://martharedbone.com/\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nAdditional Upcoming Performances Include:\n \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ngrandperformances.org/events\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

Come celebrate the legacy of the once-weekly party night that turned global\, with live performances from Rocky Dawuni and Buyepongo\, plus DJ sets from Afro Funke’ residents Glenn Red and KCRW’s Jeremy Sole. \nJoin us for Afrobeat\, Latin\, Brazilian\, Indian\, Jamaican\, and other traditional and remixed world rhythms\, plus African drumming and dancing\, DJ Culture\, arts & crafts\, and much more! \n \nAll Grand Performances Shows take place Saturdays 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm\, at The California Plaza\, 350 South Grand AvenueLos Angeles\, CA\, 90071\n\n\nRocky Dawuni\n\n\nAfro Funke’ founder\, Rocky Dawuni with his full 10-piece “Afro Roots Band” will headline the night. The three-time GRAMMY-nominated musician and activist straddles the boundaries between Africa\, the Caribbean\, and the U.S. to create his appealing Afro Roots sound that unites generations and cultures. \nhttps://rockydawuni.com/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuyepongo\nHometown favorites\, Buyepongo make contemporary pan-Latin music in the style they intriguingly call “buyangú” — an eclectic but cohesive mezcla of global beats and spicy flavors influenced by their California home base as well as the band members’ travels to Central and South America. \nhttps://buyepongo.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\nJeremy Sole\nJeremy Sole’s upbringing was seeped in the rich Chicago history of Blues\, Jazz\, Disco\, Salsa and Soul – and he reveled in that space where they all blend together. As a teenager\, Sole threw loft parties that were a culture clash during the birth of Hip Hop and House music. His obsession grew to include music from every corner of the world and\, in 2001\, Sole moved to LA. With a broad musical palette\, he felt right at home in the spiciest melting pot in the country. \nIn April 2006\, Sole was in the studio working with Ms. Lauryn Hill. After hearing him mix\, she asked if he had ever considered getting into radio\, “…because this is the music the people need to hear”. Months later\, KCRW called to ask him that same question\, and since then you can hear him Wednesdays from 12-3am on 89.9FM and KCRW.com. \nhttps://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/jeremy-sole \n\n\nGlenn Red\nKnown primarily for his work as half of Santa Monica’s legendary Afro Funké Sound System and one-third of beloved Afro-Latin deejay/producer collective\, La Junta\, GLENN RED quietly continues to forge a loyal following among fans of eclectic music\, steadily rocking crowds in the city’s most respected venues alongside the finest selectors and musicians from around the world. With the honest music of passionate artists as a common thread\, his deejay sets weave fluidly through time and across genres\, connecting the traditional sounds of Africa and the Americas with their modern expressions around the globe. Afrobeat\, Cumbia\, Rumba\, and Samba rhythms embrace Funk\, Soul\, Hip-Hop\, and Reggae\, as Glenn’s rhythmic and multifaceted sound echoes the deep\, colorful\, and spirited energy of LA and its soulful people. \nhttps://glennred.com \n\n \nAbout KCRW Summer Nights: \nKCRW Summer Nights is BACK!
