There are benches\, chairs\, and tables for adults to sit while the kids play.  \n\n\nBeach Soccer & Volleyball Courts\nYou may reserve beach soccer or volleyball courts 4 weeks in advance for $10/hour during the summer pool season. Beach court and field reservations are intended for individual or small party use only. Reservations are not required for court or field use. Borrow for 3 weeks\, with the option to renew\, if available. \nPlease note: Laptop & Hotspot Loan Kits require a full access card to check out. Who can check out a Chromebook kit?\nAdults with a standard adult library card in good standing will be able to check out a Chromebook kit at a participating library.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2. How do I check out a Chromebook kit?\nRequests for Chromebook kits can be made using our online catalog or over the phone\, like any of our other materials. At this time requests are site-specific and can only be placed at libraries offering the service (listed above). Call a library offering the service to arrange a same-day checkout\, if kits are available.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3. When can I pick up my Laptop & Hotspot?\nCall the owning library and arrange to pick up your kit during Sidewalk Service hours.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4. How long can I keep the Laptop & Hotspot Loan? Can I renew?\nThe kits can be borrowed for 3 weeks. If no other customers are on the waiting list\, the checkout can be renewed up to 3 times. The renewal needs to be made before your checkout period ends.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n5. How do I return the Chromebook Kit?\nChromebooks must be returned in person to the owning library during Sidewalk Service hours. They cannot be returned in the bookdrop. They cannot be returned to any library other than the one where the kit was checked out. Please call the owning library to arrange a drop-off time and call again once at the library to alert staff. Staff will bring out a box labeled Laptop Return to the Sidewalk Service table. You’ll be instructed to remove all items – the Chromebook\, the wireless hotspot\, and both charging cables – from the carrying case. Put the case into the box first\, on the bottom\, and then put all other items in on top. Staff will check the box to make sure all items are inside and that they look fine. All items will be quarantined for 4 days and confirmed to be working properly before being checked in. Staff will contact you if there are any questions or concerns. Please remember that the loan will still show on your account until the quarantine and check-in process is complete.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n6. Are there late fees?\nLate fees will be assessed the same as all other library materials. The Chromebook will become disabled once the loan period has ended.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n7. Will I be charged if the Chromebook is damaged while in my possession? How much?\nYes\, fees will depend on the type of damage.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n8. Will my documents stay on the Chromebook after I return it?\nAll documents are deleted once the Chromebook is shut down. This will happen even during your 3-week checkout period\, so we advise you to back up your documents on a flash drive or in Google Docs if you are working on something you want to keep.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9. What programs will be included on the Chromebook?\n\n\nAdobe Acrobat Reader\nDocuSign\nGoogle Calendar\nGoogle Drive/Docs\nSkype\nWordPress\nInternet\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10. Does the Chromebook include the internet?\nA wireless hotspot device is included when you check out the Chromebook. This will give you access to the internet.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11. I don’t have a printer. Can I print things through the library?\nYes\, you can use our Wi-Fi printing service on the borrowed Chromebook and send your documents wirelessly to any library that offers Sidewalk Service.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12. Will library staff provide an orientation on the technology when I check it out?\nA basic instruction sheet will be provided explaining how to turn on and connect the equipment. If you have further questions\, please call your local library.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n13. I am not good with computers. Will Library staff help me use the Chromebook or answer technical questions?\nLibrary staff is able to provide basic help with your computer—like how to turn it on\, connect the wireless hotspot\, or how to locate programs. DESCRIPTION:VARIOUS NIGHTS THIS MONTH- Burbank\nThe Burbank Sidewalk Astronomers are hosting another Star Party\, tonight in Burbank. The Burbank Sidewalk Astronomers host these nights several times a month. The event is open to the public\, and people of all ages are welcome to come out to enjoy the spectacle. \nThe Sidewalk Astronomers usually have several telescopes set up\, each pointed at a different part of the sky. They are happy to answer questions and guide visitors through the process of using the telescopes. Many people have never looked through a telescope before\, and they were amazed at the detail they can see in the stars and planets. \nOne of the highlights of the evening is the chance to see a real planet like Mars Saturn\, or Jupiter and its four largest moons. Each night the show is a bit different. \nOne of the most popular attractions to see through the scopes is the Orion Nebula. The nebula is a vast cloud of gas and dust that is home to many young stars. Many nights visitors can see the bright colors of the nebula and the stars that were forming inside it. \nThroughout the evening\, the Sidewalk Astronomers will give talks about astronomy and space exploration. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year.  \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure.  \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY – Laguna Beach\nWELCOME TO THE PACIFIC MARINE MAMMAL CENTER! The Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues\, rehabilitates\, and releases marine mammals\, and in doing so we contribute to ocean science and conservation. See some of our current rescued patients recovering! We are run primarily by volunteers who will greet you in our visitor yard and introduce you to our California sea lions\, Northern elephant seals\, Pacific harbor seals\, or Northern fur seal patients. Our visitor yard features interactive displays\, marine mammal artifacts\, and a Treasure Trove gift shop. There is no charge for admission\, but donations are appreciated! PMMC also offers educational programs for all ages. \nOPEN DAILY FROM 10:00 am TO 4:00 pm\n \nReservations are required for groups of 10 or more only\, smaller groups need not make reservations. We are closed on Thanksgiving\, Christmas Eve\, Christmas Day\, and New Year’s Day. \n\n\nBOOK YOUR GROUP HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n20612 Laguna Canyon Road Laguna Beach\, CA 92651 \nHISTORY\nPacific Marine Mammal Center began as Friends of the Sea Lion in 1971 with only three volunteers: Jim Stauffer\, John Cunningham\, and Dr. Rose Ekeberg. \nIn the spring of 1971\, a little girl approached Jim Stauffer\, a Newport Beach lifeguard\, on the beach.  The little girl told Jim that she had seen a seal on the beach.  Jim hopped in his lifeguard jeep and went to go investigate.  What he found was a young Pacific harbor seal. When Jim placed the animal in his jeep\, it leaped right out.  Jim decided the animal must be healthy and just needed to rest\, so he returned to work.  \nConcern for the animal nagged at him all day. When Jim returned to check on the small seal\, it was still on the beach.  Jim picked up the seal and took it to the Dover Shores Animal Hospital\, where Dr. Rod La Shell examined the animal and found that it had lungworms.  With advice from Dr. La Shell\, Jim nursed the harbor seal back to health and released the animal back into the ocean. \n \nMISSION STATEMENT\n“The Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues\, rehabilitates\, and releases marine mammals and inspires ocean stewardship through research\, education\, and collaboration.” \nRescue\n \nUnlike whales and dolphins\, seals and sea lions don’t have to remain in the water in order to survive. The animals beach themselves to be warm and dry when feeling ill. They seek rest on land for a variety of reasons and are not always in need of intervention. Our staff is trained to recognize animals suffering from infections\, malnourishment\, pneumonia\, gill net strangulation\, etc. which can harm an animal’s chance for survival. \nRehabilitation\n \nWhen a “patient” is admitted\, our staff performs all necessary procedures under the direction and protocols set by the Animal Care Director and our Veterinary Medical Director. During the course of rehabilitation\, animals require a variety of treatments such as administration of antibiotics and subcutaneous fluids\, tube feeding\, force-feeding\, wound care\, etc. \nMost animals come in dehydrated and the most effective means to provide fluids and nourishment is through tube feeding. The process requires the blending of fish\, electrolytes\, warm water\, vitamins\, and medication into a fish formula. This formula is fed to the animals by inserting a flexible tube into the stomach using large syringes. As soon as the animals are hydrated and stable\, we wean them to eat whole fish. \nRelease\n \nOnce an animal has gained an optimal weight and is competing for food\, it’s ready for release. Prior to release\, each animal is tagged with an identification number. The color-coded tags indicate the animal has been rehabilitated and helps identify the specific animal and care center in case the animal needs care in the future. We strive to return every one of our patients back to the wild once their care with us is complete. \nEducation\nIt is not enough to rescue and rehabilitate these animals. We must communicate what needs to be done so that positive change can happen. PMMC strives to inspire ocean stewardship in all generations through sharing the stories of the animals we assist. Over 50\,000 people learn about conservation by talking with our education docents and interacting with exhibits in our visitor yard each year. We welcome over 7\,000 children\, most through our free programs for at-risk communities\, in our onsite experiential-based education programs that teach the importance of marine science and eco-friendly behavior. Our outreach team engages thousands of more people in offsite programs\, which share the importance of community involvement. Additionally\, through distance learning technology\, our education department brings conservation messaging to children and adults all over the nation and internationally. \nResearch\n \nAn important part of marine mammal recovery is ongoing research. Research is being done to find the pathological conditions that affect the marine mammals of Southern California. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India\, and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. DESCRIPTION:EVERY THURSDAY 12:30–1:00PM- Online via ZOOM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWould you like to learn how to meditate? Join the Hammer Museum each Thursday for Mindful Awareness Meditation Online. Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. No special clothing is required\, and participants are welcome to join for five minutes or enjoy the entire 30 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese free weekly drop-in sessions usually take place in the Hammer’s Billy Wilder Theater but are now offered live online via Zoom. \nMindful Awareness Meditation is provided by UCLA & The Hammer Museum\n  \nff \n\nSessions are led by Diana Winston and other instructors from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center.
