DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year.  \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure.  \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. Centuries later\, it is this union of fugitive and shaman blood that runs through Daniel’s veins\, injecting a much needed outlaw spirit into western yoga. \n \nHaving earned his teaching certification through his studies and apprenticeship with ashtanga vinyasa masters in Mysore\, India\, Daniel has been bringing donation-based vinyasa yoga to the people since 2005. Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. Observatory staff will discuss the meaning of local noon\, show how the Sun’s changing path across the sky causes seasonal changes\, and determine where the Sun sets on the western horizon. \n \nSeasons\n\nSummer begins in Earth’s northern hemisphere at 2:14 a.m.\, PDT\, today. Winter begins in the southern hemisphere at the same time. The June/summer solstice occurs when the Sun reaches its maximum declination (23.5 degrees). This is when Earth’s northern hemisphere is tilted as far toward the Sun as possible during a given year. \n \nWhat Is Summer?\n\nFrom the summer solstice until the start of autumn – the autumnal equinox in September – days will get shorter\, and the noon elevation of the Sun will decrease. This happens because the Earth’s axis is tilted 23½ degrees to its orbit. June 21 is the longest day of the year. \n\nExplore the Exterior Exhibits\nThe grounds of the Observatory present compelling opportunities to observe the movement of the Sun and Moon and to walk a scale model of the solar system. Looming over the lawn is a monumental sculpture celebrating astronomers who gradually revealed the nature of the universe. The terraces offer vistas of Los Angeles\, Griffith Park\, Mt. Wilson\, the Pacific Ocean\, and\, of course\, the famous Hollywood Sign. \nAstronomers Monument & Sundial\nGreeting visitors upon their arrival at Griffith Observatory\, the Astronomers Monument is a large outdoor concrete sculpture on the front lawn that pays homage to six of the greatest astronomers of all time. \n \nSolar System Lawn Model\nEngraved on the front sidewalk of Griffith Observatory is a scale model of our solar system. One-quarter-inch-wide bronze lines mark the orbits of the planets\, which are indicated with bronze plaques also embedded in the sidewalks. \n\n \nSunset & Moonset Radial Lines\nSeven stone and bronze lines embedded in the lower West Observation Terrace radiate out from the building toward the western horizon. Each line points toward a notable sunset or moonset position on the horizon. \n \nThe Gottlieb Transit Corridor\n\nThe new Robert J. and Suzanne Gottlieb Transit Corridor\, a monumental 150-foot-long\, 10-foot-wide glass-walled passageway\, immerses visitors in the motions of the Sun\, Moon\, and stars across the sky and demonstrates how these motions are linked with time and the calendar. \n\n\n\nRoof & Terraces\n\nGriffith Observatory’s roof and terraces give visitors a chance to observe the panorama of Los Angeles.
