Unique to automobile museums\, each car on display is attentively serviced and maintained to remain as drivable as when the vehicle originally rolled off the showroom floor. On view are various Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance winners and cars once owned by movie stars\, royalty and other notable personalities. \n  \n\nBuilding ONE: The Nethercutt Museum FREE!\nThe entire collection is housed in two beautifully appointed exhibit facilities located just north of Los Angeles. Housed in the Museum is the Nethercutt Automotive Research Library and Archives \, one of the world’s top automotive research facilities. Just steps outside the Museum are a resplendently restored steam locomotive and railcar. \nOpened in 1971\, The Nethercutt Collection is a not-for-profit educational institution and a resource for automobile enthusiasts\, historians\, students and scholars. It is open to the public at no charge. The Nethercutt Museum showcases more than 130 of the world’s greatest antique\, vintage\, classic and special interest automobiles including many top winners of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. \n\n\n  \n \nTHE ANTIQUE ERA (1890s – 1915)\nInnovation and experimentation were at the heart of this era and provided the catalyst for the automobiles’ development. By the late-19th century\, “horseless carriages” were being built by small groups of artisans\, craftsmen and engineers on a small scale\, with many taking characteristics from the wagons they were replacing. \n\n\nTHE VINTAGE ERA (1916 – 1924)\nA class of cars that came to be known today as “vintage\,” fits in between the expensive coach built brands that became classics and the inexpensive models represented by Ford\, Chevrolet and Dodge. These cars sold for between $500 and $2\,000. They had basic engineering features but had better cosmetic appointments such as visors\, cigar lighters and wool broadcloth interiors. \n  \n \nTHE CLASSIC ERA (1925 – 1948)\nThis era elevated the common automobile to a status symbol\, as evidenced by their cost. When common vehicles sold for $400 to about $1\,200\, the classic car had a price tag of $2\,000 to $20\,000. \n  \n\nTHE POST-WAR ERA (1945 – 1970s)\nThroughout the 1950s\, engine power and vehicle speeds rose\, designs became better integrated and more stylized\, and cars grew more popular across the world. The auto market slightly shifted in the 1960s\, causing Detroit to worry about foreign competition. European makers adopted even greater technology and Japan appeared as a serious car-producing nation. \n  \n \nTHE MUSEUM LOCOMOTIVE & PRIVATE CAR\n1937 Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson Locomotive #2839: \n#2839 was built by Montreal Locomotive Works and is resplendent in its Royal maroon\, gold leaf\, gloss black and brushed stainless steel livery\, is a testament to the grand era of steam locomotive engineering. The Hudson type is a 4-6-4 wheel arrangement and was a high-speed passenger locomotive with a top speed of 90 mph. \n1912 Pullman Private Car #100 California: \nCustom built by Pullman in Chicago\, Illinois for Clara Baldwin Stocker the eldest Daughter of local Pioneer “Lucky” Baldwin. This railcar has been beautifully restored back to 1912 \nBuilding TWO: The Nethercutt Collection: Available by Tour Only  advanced reservations are required- $10\n  \n \nLower Salon\n\nThe Lower Salon is where guests assemble to start the guided tour. The salon is a microcosm of the entire collection. There are about 25 automobiles dating from the early 1900’s up till the late 1940’s. Also in display are nickelodeons\, music boxes\, David Winter Cottages\, Dolls\, Coins\, and crystal figurines. \n  \n\n \nGrand Salon\n\nMarble columns\, crystal chandeliers\, painted ceilings all make up this beautiful Grand Salon Showroom of the 1910’s\, 20 and 30s. On display are approx. 30 of the finest automoblies of that era. Duesenbergs\, Cadillacs\, Isotta-Fraschini\, Delahaye\, Minvera\, Renault\, Maybach\, many other European and American built automoblies. \n  \n\n \nAutomobile Collectibles and Antiques\n\nOn the third floor is a large assortment of Radiator Hood Ornaments “Mascots”\, including Lalique Crystal Mascots and 18th & 19th Century French Furniture \n  \n \nInstruments\n\nThis area displays a world-class collection of automated mechanical instruments including musical repeat striking watches\, Swiss bird boxes\, cylinder and disc music boxes\, and grand pianos. The museum’s mission is to further intercultural understanding through the arts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. \nThe museum’s historic building has served as a center for art\, culture\, and learning in Pasadena since its construction in 1924 by pioneering collector and entrepreneur Grace Nicholson (1877-1948) as her residence\, galleries\, and Treasure House/emporium. Ms. Nicholson’s championing of Asian art early in the century set the tone for much of the Pasadena community’s arts-related activities during the ensuing decades. The building also served as the site of the Pasadena Art Museum\, which was renowned for its groundbreaking exhibitions of contemporary art. Pacific Asia Museum combined the spirits of both its predecessors in its focus on the classic and contemporary arts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. In 2013\, the University of Southern California partnered with the museum to form USC Pacific Asia Museum. It was founded by former magazine publisher\, martial arts historian and martial arts veteran Michael Matsuda. The concept of the museum actually began in 1987 but didn’t officially begin until 1999. \nAfter a number of dinner ceremonies and special events\, the Martial Arts History Museum gathered the biggest martial arts icons in the world to cut the ribbon in launching the first of many traveling exhibits. For the next four years\, the museum was on the road going all across the country. From libraries to conventions to expos to the Queen Mary\, the museum was housed in a 1\,000 square foot exhibit with wonderful reviews the museum exhibit was in high demand. \n \nAfter numerous meetings with the L.A. City Council\, Mayor Villariagosa’s staff\, the California Senate\, the San Fernando City Council\, and more\, it was through the urging of Congressman Howard McKeon and the Mayor of Santa Clarita\, that the Martial Arts History Museum open their doors in a brick and mortar facility in the city of Santa Clarita. The museum opened in 2006 in an 8\,000 square foot facility which featured a wide range of displays as well as a 200-plus seat theater. The city of Santa Clarita had provided us with future plans to construct are area for three museums\, which would include the Martial Arts History. Unfortunately\, a year later\, a new leadership was in control and their future plans for a museum center were canceled. \nIn 2010\, the museum decided to relocate to a city that would be more open to art and culture; which was the city of Burbank\, CA. Burbank is a very populated area surrounded by Hollywood’s biggest productions studios. In 2011\, the museum re-opened to the public holding a significant number of events every month. Being located in Burbank\, many of the local schools were now able to visit the facility. DESCRIPTION:KIDS UNDER 12 FREE- Long Beach\nThe Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) was founded in 1950 as a municipal art center for the city of Long Beach. Since its inception\, the Museum has been housed in the historic 1911 Elizabeth Milbank Anderson House. In 1957\, the Anderson House was designated as the Long Beach Museum of Art\, at which time the Museum began acquiring a permanent collection.\nIn 1977\, the Museum was honored with accreditation by the American Association of Museums\, which it has since maintained. Since 1986\, the Long Beach Museum of Art Foundation has managed the Museum\, governed by a Board of Trustees. In 2000\, the Museum completed a restoration of the historic residence and constructed a new two-story exhibition pavilion (in 2015 the pavilion was renamed the Hartman Pavilion). Since then\, the Museum has offered diverse and compelling exhibitions\, which has resulted in increased visitors and program attendance. \n  \n \nThe Museum’s permanent collection is diverse with more than 3\,200 works encompassing 300 years of American and European art in all media. DESCRIPTION:EVERY DAY ’til MIDNIGHT- Dockweiler State Beach\nThe Dockweiler Beach Fire Pits are located about 3 miles south of Playa del Rey\, this inviting beach features 3 miles of shoreline\, an RV park\, and over 2\,000 regular vehicle parking spaces. The wide sandy beach lies beneath the departures flight path of LAX\, offering fantastic belly views of airlines headed out over the Pacific. The lot entrance is at Vista del Mar and Imperial Highway. \n\n\nFIRE PITS RULES\n\n\n\n\n\nAny grills or BBQs must fit inside the fire pit\, which is 2′ wide. No grills\, grilling\, or flames or fires on the sand.\nTo use the fire pits\, you bring your own charcoal or wood and a way to light them.\nPlease do not use sand to put out the fire.\nHelp keep our beaches clean by preventing ashes or debris from falling into the sand.\n\n  \n\n\n\nThere’s no better way to end a fun day at the beach than to circle up around a cozy bonfire. Not all California beaches allow bonfires\, but here in the Marina del Rey area\, we’re lucky that Dockweiler State Beach does permit regulated burns in provided fire rings. Follow these tips to ensure your group has an enjoyable time. \n\nIf you want a pit\, arrive early. From May through September\, the pits are in high demand\, especially on the weekends\, and there are some diehards who arrive at dawn to claim their spots for the entire day. You cannot reserve fire pits as you would a campsite. Do not leave your pit unattended\, even for a quick dip in the ocean – if you do\, don’t be surprised to find another group has taken over the site. There are between 60 – 80 fire pits located just north and south of where Vista del Mar intersects with Imperial Highway. That sounds like a lot\, but consider that Dockweiler is also home to an RV park\, and you’re all competing for space.\nBring everything you need – wood\, s’mores\, snacks\, et cetera (see “Your Packing List” below).\nThe beach and all amenities close at midnight.\nBefore you leave\, snuff out the flame with water. Stir the embers after they are covered with water and make sure that everything is saturated. Do not use sand to distinguish the fire\, as it creates a mess for the next guest.\n\n \nYOUR PACKING LIST\n\nWood and charcoal (wood for that nice bonfire and charcoal for cooking – see below about barbecue rules). Both can be purchased at Ralph’s grocery stores: 4700 Admiralty Way\, Marina del Rey; 8701 Lincoln Boulevard\, Playa del Rey. Only burn clean wood (nothing treated with paint\, chemicals\, etc.) in the pits.\nFire starter and a lighter. You can purchase kindling from most any grocery\, home supply\, or sporting-goods store. Or\, prepare your own starter with this old-school camping craft: Fill a cardboard egg carton with dryer lint\, wood shavings\, paper shreds\, or other ignitable materials. Pour a small amount of melted candle wax into each cup to make things stay put. Break off cups individually and place into your wood stack. Light the cardboard cups and watch how easy your fire takes off – even in the wind.\nIf barbecuing\, note that large stand-up barbeques are NOT allowed on the sand or in the parking lots. However\, you can bring a low-profile version and place it inside the fire ring.\nLong-handle grilling sticks. These are great for cooking hot dogs and kabobs and roasting marshmallows.\nHot glove or mitt. Don’t ruin your night with a burn from handling hot wood\, pots\, or grills. Items like the Ove Glove offer protection while still allowing dexterity.\nFood! Doubt you’ll forget this\, but you may want a separate checklist so that you remember all the elements for your meal. It’s easy to overlook things like serving spoons\, plastic utensils\, salt and pepper\, napkins or wet wipes\, and containers for leftovers. Paper plates are great for cookouts since they’re ok to burn in the fire afterward.\nCamp/beach table. Depending on the size of your group\, you may prefer to set up your dinner fixings buffet style on a simple folding table. Whatever you bring\, remember that you’ll need to carry it across the sand to the pit and back to the parking lot at the end of your evening. So only take what you really need.\nYou’ll want a beverage cooler with ice\, especially if you heed our warning and arrive early in the day to claim your spot. A bag to hold discarded recyclables is a good idea\, too.\nComfort items. Ask each person in your group to bring his or her own beach chair or picnic blanket. Today\, the Italian Hall is the oldest remaining structure from Los Angeles’ Italian enclave and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \n \nTHE HISTORY\nItalians and Italian Americans have played an instrumental role in the development of Los Angeles as one of the world’s greatest metropolises\, yet the history of Italians in the region is largely unknown. Though Los Angeles is home to the nation’s fifth-largest Italian population today\, and the Italian presence in the American West predates the nation’s founding\, seldom is the city included in dialogs surrounding contemporary or historic Italian American communities. An examination of the region’s Italian roots reveals both the complexity of the Italian Diaspora and the exceptionally diverse fabric of Southern California’s history. \n \nThe Los Angeles Italian experience contrasts with that of Italian immigrants elsewhere in the country and reveals the complexity of the Italian American diaspora. Given the success that Italian Americans have achieved in the United States\, it is easy to forget that they\, like other minority groups\, faced considerable prejudice and hostility in their struggle to achieve the American Dream. In the American South\, Italians were a common target of lynchings and racially-motivated violence. In the early 20th century\, eugenicists described Italians as genetically inferior\, while political cartoons of the era depicted Italians as threats to American security and racial purity. \nTHE MISSION\nThe mission of the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles is to foster a deeper understanding of Southern California’s diverse heritage through research\, historic preservation\, exhibitions\, and educational programs that examine the history and continuing contributions of Italian Americans in multi-ethnic Los Angeles and the United States. \nThe IAMLA is a charity that depends on donations to accomplish its specific mission. Like monuments and national anthems\, they intend to create a sense of identity-based on a shared past\, present\, and future. \nLike many other governments\, the communist countries of the twentieth century produced an abundance of flags and banners. They were omnipresent at military parades\, sports events\, and public gatherings. Apart from national flags\, many organizations produced their own richly decorated flags and banners. The Wende Museum holds over 2\,000 of these ornamental textiles in its collection. \nMartin Roemers: Relics of the Cold War\n \nDuring an eleven-year period\, from 1998 through 2009\, Dutch photographer Martin Roemers photographed the structural and topographic remnants of the Cold War in both the East and West. His research took him to Russia\, Poland\, Czech Republic\, Ukraine\, Latvia\, Lithuania\, Great Britain\, Netherlands\, Belgium\, and Germany\, where he documented underground tunnels\, abandoned army bases\, military training areas\, rotting tanks\, and destroyed monuments. \nLight–guard–house: Installation by Farrah Karapetian\n \nThe 20-square-foot aluminum guardhouse that sat outside the ADN headquarters in East Berlin from 1971–92 is both an artifact of an atmosphere of mistrust and representative of past and current political protectionism. Artist Farrah Karapetian will turn this structure into a lighthouse\, changing a gesture of suspicion into a gesture of welcome. The windows of the guardhouse will be tinted in a rainbow gradient encompassing all of the colors potentially included in national flags. Over the course of Wende’s concurrent exhibition\, The Medium is the Message: Flags and Banners\, Karapetian will engage with the public about experiences they have had as migrants. As the stories accumulate and become available on the museum’s website\, the light inside the lighthouse will pause at the various colors associated with the flags of the respective national borders crossed. Rather than the finality of immigration\, the artist’s focus is the prevalence of migration\, asking visitors: What experiences of welcome or mistrust have occurred as you have moved internationally? All the HOKALI Community of surfers will be cleaning the beaches together\, on the second day of every month!! “What day is that man?”\, you may ask. Ahh\, that’s an easy one Dude! It’s the Second Day.  \nHOKALI is announcing guidelines for individuals to conduct solo beach clean ups as long as local governing bodies allow for public beach access. A solo cleanup is defined as an individual cleanup by one person or household unit\, not necessarily organized by the chapter\, but promoted as an activity for the public. \nThe following requirements are outlined to assist in evaluating your ability to conduct a solo beach cleanup. \n\nYour state and local governing agency allows access to the beach;\n\n\nActive use of the beach is allowed under applicable laws (e.g. walking included);\n\n\nAdditional restrictions on active beach use are followed\, e.g.\, open and closing times\n\n\nBeaches are not so crowded that active users can maintain a safe physical distance of 6 feet\n\nParticipation in a solo cleanup event is voluntary and solely at a participant’s own risk\, including risk associated with COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2). Individuals should only participate to the extent that they can comply with applicable federal\, state\, and local rules and restrictions\, and the below required practices including physical distancing. \nThe following rules must be followed to ensure individuals are equipped to make an educated\, safe and mindful decision to conduct a solo cleanup while following CDC public health guidance\, local beach access restrictions\, and EPA recommendations for properly discarding used PPE items. \nBe responsible! It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84\, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). \nThe ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. It is the largest maritime museum on the West Coast. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by Modernist architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. \n\nEXHIBITS\nANGELS GATE TUGBOAT\n \nThe tugboat ANGELS GATE arrived at the Museum in 1992\, after almost 50 years of providing general towing services and goodwill tours for the Port of Los Angeles. \nTĀMINARU\n \nIn the early 20th century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish. Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally from the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor. \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara\, organized by Tara Fansler\, and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Japan Business Association with the assistance of the Terminal Islanders Club. \nPOSEIDON MODEL\n \nThere is a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS POSEIDON was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure”. \nFifteen men built the model over a period of three months. POSEIDON is 21 .5 feet long and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS QUEEN MARY\, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach\, California. \nNAVY HALL\n \nThe Museum building\, built-in 1941\, was originally used as a ferry terminal\, transporting people and automobiles between San Pedro and Terminal Island. The area of the first floor where cars would enter and exit is now used as the Navy Hall. \nANGELS GATE LIGHT\n \nThe Angels Gate Lighthouse (officially known as Los Angeles Harbor Light) has marked the entrance of Los Angeles Harbor through times of war and peace\, and even survived a tidal wave! The tower itself has undergone many changes through the years. The distinctive green flash of the Angels Gate Lighthouse remains a welcoming beacon to professional mariners and recreational boaters alike. \nKIDS EXHIBIT\n \nKids of all ages will discover what’s going on in the harbor today through a series of interactive games and activities in the children’s exhibit. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna\, sardines\, mackerel\, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. \nToday\, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed\, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries endures. \nCOMMERCIAL DIVING\n \n  \nThis exhibit is an introduction to just a few of the thousands of jobs performed by commercial divers and fishery divers in the South Bay\, and was the inspiration of the late Torrance R. DESCRIPTION:OPEN YEAR ROUND- Griffith Park\nThe Trail to Amir’s Garden is a 1.1 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located LA’s Griffith Park. This shady rest stop and memorial garden features beautiful wild flowers and water-bearing\, fire-resistive succulents interspersed with natives and memorial trees and plants. The trail is primarily used for hiking\, walking\, running\, nature trips\, and horses and is accessible year-round. It is rated as moderately difficult trail. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe gardens are cared for by official volunteers since its creation in 1971. Amir’s Garden is considered a rest stop and not a dedicated picnic area\, therefore it can’t be reserved for events. The nearest restrooms are located at Mineral Wells Picnic Area. Activities related to the care of a large garden may be taking place at any time\, including watering. Amir’s Garden is a most pleasant place for a hike-in picnic\, with a selection of picnic tables.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe History of Amir’s Garden\nAmir Dialameh worked a steep hill in Griffith Park for than three decades with a pick and shovel and turned a scorched\, barren landscape into a lush\, shaded grove that is visited daily by a steady stream of hikers and horseback riders. \nFor thirty-two years\, Dialameh worked in the garden most days of the week\, hiking up a service road to the rugged Mineral Wells location. Over the years\, he planted pine and jacaranda trees along with rose bushes\, geraniums\, oleander\, and yucca that grew into the beautiful oasis it is today. \n“…what you need first and foremost here is shade\,” Dialameh explained in 1989. “That’s why I planted trees like the jacaranda. In ten years\, this place will be covered with their branches.” \nHis words were prophetic. Today Amir’s Garden is nearly five-acres of shady rest stop for Griffith Park’s hikers and equestrians. \nDialameh first came to appreciate nature as a child during hiking trips in the Alborz Mountains of his native Iran. As his love of hiking and nature developed\, so did his affinity for the United States of America. \n“I was intrigued by the volunteerism that built this country… people doing things instead of relying on the government.” In 1963 while visiting his brother in Pittsburgh\, Dialameh made the ultimate decision to immigrate and moved to the Los Angeles area. \n\n\nGetting There\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe hike to Amir’s Garden actually begins near one of Griffith Park’s larger picnic areas\, Mineral Well Picnic Area. Find the dirt service road heading west from the intersection of Griffith Park Drive and Mineral Wells Road. \nWalk straight through an immediate junction and follow the dirt road on a southwestern climb to Amir’s Garden. After a horseshoe bend in the road\, and a quarter mile from the start\, you will pass a water tower that is accompanied by broad views stretching beyond Griffith Park toward Glendale\, the Verdugo Mountains\, and San Gabriel Mountains. \n \nLooking back down the trail\nAfter less than half a mile\, the trail arrives at Amir’s Garden where you’ll discover a pocket of tall sycamores arcing over a mountainside of verdant plants including succulents like ice plant and jade. There are a few picnic tables at the entrance of Amir’s Garden and others hidden throughout. \n  \n \nAmir’s Garden\n\nStroll through a web of footpaths and recharge your batteries in this refreshing Griffith Park retreat. With extra effort\, you may continue up North Trail toward Mount Hollywood\, Mount Bell and other peaks in Griffith Park. Otherwise\, return the way you came for a satisfying 1-mile round trip hike. No fee or permit is required to hike to Amir’s Garden and dogs are welcome.\n\nTo get to the trailhead: Take the 5 Freeway to the Los Feliz Boulevard exit. Drive west on Los Feliz Boulevard to the first light and turn north on Crystal Springs Road. After 1.5 miles\, turn left on Griffith Park Drive and drive 1.2 miles to the intersection with Mineral Wells Road. Turn left onto Mineral Wells Road and park immediately in the spaces along the road. DESCRIPTION:HIKE TO THE ROCK POOL AT MALIBU CREEK STATE PARK IN AGOURA HILLS! One of the most popular destinations in Malibu Creek State Park is the Rock Pool\, a picturesque place that is easily accessible for all ages. \n \nGetting to the Rock Pool\nOne fun way to get to the Rock Pool is via the Grassland Trail\, accessible on Mulholland Highway just west of Las Virgenes Road\, where street parking is available. Take the Grassland trail (as seen in the photo below)\, with moderate hills\, .7 miles to the Crags Road main fire road/trail in Malibu Creek State Park\, and turn right. Alternatively\, you can park in the Park’s lower parking lot\, pay $12 for a bit more secure parking\, and take the main trail into the park. \n \nGrassland Trail \nSoon you’ll see the sign where you can see the Visitor Center is on the left. That’s the direction you’ll be taking to get to the Rock Pool. Veering to the right gets you to another popular site at the Park\, the old M*A*S*H television series set. \nYou’ll see a bridge over the creek (seen below after the winter rains) that takes you to the Visitor Center (open weekends noon to 4pm). The Rock Pool is the trail on the right (west) before reaching the bridge. Look carefully and you may see the little sign that says “Rock Pool.” \n \n \nCalifornia State Parks\, which manages the Park\, warns visitors not to jump or dive into the Rock Pool as it is dangerous. But it is certainly fun to explore and quite a beautiful area. \n\n\n1925 Las Virgenes Road\, Cornell\, CA 91301 \, United States \nConsidered the recreational crown jewel of the Santa Monica Mountains\, Malibu Creek State Park has over 8\,000 acres of rolling tall grass plains\, oak savannahs\, and dramatic peaks. It’s no wonder many call it “The Yosemite of Southern California”. \nThe park\, formerly owned by 20th Century Fox Studios\, opened in 1976 and has welcomed millions of visitors since. The stunning terrain here that has been seen all over the world in movies and television awaits you. Your day fee covers same-day access/parking to ANY California State Park and/or Beach \nSAFETY\nFIRE is a constant danger\, especially in summer and fall. Smoking and all fires are prohibited outside of the parking area\, picnic area\, and campground. \nGas and charcoal fires are always allowed in the campground. If you are interested in learning about archery\, the El Dorado Archers have classes for beginners every Saturday at the El Dorado Park Archery Field. Everyone is first required to take a Safety Class\, which costs $5 and runs from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. every weekend and sign up starts at 8:30 a.m. \n\nA $5 class fee will be charged regardless of using  personal equipment. DESCRIPTION:OPEN WEEKENDS- Mt Wilson\nMount Wilson Observatory is located on the summit of Mount Wilson above Pasadena at an altitude of 5715 feet. Mount Wilson Observatory is visible from much of the Los Angeles area. Free of charge\, this is a must see experience. \n  \n \n\n\nViewing through the 100-Inch Hooker Telescope\nThe world’s largest telescope from 1917 to 1949\, the 100-inch Telescope forever changed our understanding of the scale and nature of our Universe and launched a revolution in astronomy that continues through today. This world-heritage class instrument\, used by many of the greatest astronomers of the Twentieth Century\, has only recently been made available for regular public viewing. It is the largest telescope in the world that you can rent! Imagine looking through the telescope used by astronomers Edwin Hubble and Milton Humason in the late 1920s to measure the expansion of the Universe. \n\n  \n \nThe 60 inch Telescope\nMount Wilson Observatory’s 60-inch telescope was completed in 1908 by Observatory founder George Ellery Hale with funding from Andrew Carnegie. It was the world’s largest operational telescope until Hale went on to complete the Mt. Wilson 100-inch telescope in 1917. For a more detailed history of this revolutionary instrument\, which became the model for all large observatory telescopes of the future\, see the article “Building the 60-inch Telescope.” Among the many important discoveries from the 60-inch telescope was Harlow Shapley’s revelation in 1918 that the accepted view of the time\, that our Sun was near the center of the Milky Way Galaxy\, was wrong. Shapley used the light gathering power of the 60-inch to show that our solar system is instead half way out toward the edge of our Galaxy. The telescope was a workhorse instrument for astronomy for over half a century and used by astronomical luminaries such as Edwin Hubble\, Walter Baade\, and Allan Sandage to unravel the secrets of stars and galaxies. Now retired from active scientific service\, the 60-inch and the 100-inch telescopes are the largest in the world made exclusively available to the public. With their large light-collecting mirrors and the exquisite skies over Mount Wilson\, these historic telescopes provide an unrivaled and unique astronomical experience. \n\n\n\n\n\nCHARA (Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy)\nMount Wilson’s newest astronomical instruments are Georgia State University’s optical interferometric array of six telescopes. This facility\, located here because of the exceptional seeing conditions\, puts Mount Wilson back on the cutting edge of astrophysics. The full array was completed in 2004. Each telescope of the CHARA Array has a light-collecting mirror 1-meter in diameter. The telescopes are dispersed over the mountain to provide a two-dimensional layout that provides the resolving capability (but not the light collecting ability!) of a single telescope a fifth of a mile in diameter. Light from the individual telescopes is conveyed through vacuum tubes to a central Beam Synthesis Facility in which the six beams are combined together. When the paths of the individual beams are matched to an accuracy of less than one micron\, after the light traverses distances of hundreds of meters\, the Array then acts like a single coherent telescope for the purposes of achieving exceptionally high angular resolution. The Array is capable of resolving details as small as 200 micro-arcseconds\, equivalent to the angular size of a nickel seen from a distance of 10\,000 miles. In terms of the number and size of its individual telescopes\, its ability to operate at visible and near infrared wavelengths\, and its longest baselines of 330 meters\, the CHARA Array is arguably the most powerful instrument of its kind in the world. \nScience Objectives\nThe Array is applicable to problems in almost all areas of contemporary astronomy. It is particularly suited to stellar astrophysics where it will be used to measure the diameters\, distances\, masses\, and luminosities of stars\, as well as to image features such as spots and flares on their surfaces. Other projects range from detecting planetary systems\, imaging stars in process of formation\, and studies of bright transient phenomena like novae. \nFor more information on this amazing research facility and the science that is emerging from it\, please go to the CHARA array homepage. There you can find a video\, Sizing up the Stars\, that explains how interferometry works. \n\n\n\n \nAstronomical Museum\nAlso on the mountain\, next to the 100-inch telescope\, there is a new exhibit hall that displays Albert Michelson’s original interferometer\, used to get the first measurement of stars other than our Sun.  The exhibit hall reveals in detail how the light is combined in the new CHARA area. \nWeekend Public Guided Tours\n\n\n\n\n\nDocent-led walking tours of the observatory take place on Saturdays and Sundays through November 29. The two hour tours depart at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. sharp from the Cosmic Cafe located above the large parking lot at the entrance to the Observatory. A special feature of these tours is entrance into both the 60-inch and 100-inch telescope domes\, as well as the observing room of the 150-foot Solar Tower Telescope.  On rare occasions\, a telescope may be closed to the tour due to a special event or maintenance. \n\n\nPurchasing Tickets \nTickets are $15 (adults) and $13 (ages 12 and under & 62 and older). Tour tickets are available for same-day purchase at the Cosmic Café\, and rarely sell out. For each tour\, 15 spots are available. \nIf you have a large group\, we urge you to opt for a private tour instead. These can be arranged by sending an email request to tours@mtwilson.edu. \nChildren under age 6 are not permitted. The tours involve about a mile of walking and climbing some stairs. Please read the Health Notice in the information tab. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrivate Group Tours\nPrivate guided tours may be arranged by individuals or groups in advance. Written by Hal McAlister\, the second director of the Mount Wilson Institute and founder of CHARA\, it is a well-illustrated guide to all the points of interest on the mountaintop. \n\n\n\n\nElevation Warning\nThe high elevation of the Observatory (5715 ft) and the change in elevation during the approximately one-mile and two-hour long tour are unsuitable for individuals with respiratory and heart problems or with limited mobility. \nThe century-old facilities are not ADA-compliant and\, except for the Astronomical Museum and the Cosmic Cafe\, offer no access to those who cannot climb multiple flights of stars. Thus\, tours of the Observatory\, either guided or unguided\, are inappropriate for some elderly people and for those who are not in good health. \nVisitors should take these factors into consideration before touring the Observatory. \n\n\n\nParking\n\n\n\nA U.S. Forest Service Adventure Pass is required to park at the Observatory\, as it is located on U.S. Forest Service land. A day pass may be purchased at the Cosmic Cafe (when it is open from April 4 to November 29 in 2020) on weekends between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Other times\, the $5 day pass or the $30 dollar annual pass may be purchased at many locations around Los Angeles before you head up.  Click here to go to the U.S. Forest Service website for more information about the Adventure Pass and where to buy them.
