SUMMARY:IAMLA Italian American Museum of Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY TO SUNDAY  – Italian American Museum of Los Angeles\nThe Italian American Museum of Los Angeles\, or IAMLA\, is located in the historic Italian Hall\, which was constructed in 1908 to serve as a gathering place for the Italian community. Today\, the Italian Hall is the oldest remaining structure from Los Angeles’ Italian enclave and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \n \nTHE HISTORY\nItalians and Italian Americans have played an instrumental role in the development of Los Angeles as one of the world’s greatest metropolises\, yet the history of Italians in the region is largely unknown. Though Los Angeles is home to the nation’s fifth-largest Italian population today\, and the Italian presence in the American West predates the nation’s founding\, seldom is the city included in dialogs surrounding contemporary or historic Italian American communities. An examination of the region’s Italian roots reveals both the complexity of the Italian Diaspora and the exceptionally diverse fabric of Southern California’s history. \n \nThe Los Angeles Italian experience contrasts with that of Italian immigrants elsewhere in the country and reveals the complexity of the Italian American diaspora. Given the success that Italian Americans have achieved in the United States\, it is easy to forget that they\, like other minority groups\, faced considerable prejudice and hostility in their struggle to achieve the American Dream. In the American South\, Italians were a common target of lynchings and racially-motivated violence. In the early 20th century\, eugenicists described Italians as genetically inferior\, while political cartoons of the era depicted Italians as threats to American security and racial purity. \nTHE MISSION\nThe mission of the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles is to foster a deeper understanding of Southern California’s diverse heritage through research\, historic preservation\, exhibitions\, and educational programs that examine the history and continuing contributions of Italian Americans in multi-ethnic Los Angeles and the United States. \nThe IAMLA is a charity that depends on donations to accomplish its specific mission. As such\, the IAMLA does entertain requests for financial support to fund other organizations\, charitable or otherwise\, nor does it provide financial resources to artists\, scholars\, filmmakers\, etc. The IAMLA does not fund exhibitions or theatrical or cinematic productions\, nor is the museum rented for such projects. \n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Sunday: 10:00am – 3:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.iamla.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Los Angeles Maritime Museum
DESCRIPTION:WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY – San Pedro\nDiscover the history of the Port of Los Angeles on land or at sea! Welcome to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum where our hardworking harbor tug ANGELS GATE provides educational tours while our historic museum building houses fascinating exhibits\, a research library\, a ham radio station\, and a gift shop. \nOPEN EVERY WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY FROM 12:00 pm TO 5:00 pm\nFREE TO CHILDREN AGES 12 AND UNDER\n\n\n\nBerth 84\, Foot of 6th St.\, San Pedro\, CA 90731 \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum is housed in the former Municipal Ferry Terminal building\, located on the main channel of the Los Angeles Harbor. It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84\, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). \nThe ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. It is the largest maritime museum on the West Coast. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by Modernist architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. \n\nEXHIBITS\nANGELS GATE TUGBOAT\n \nThe tugboat ANGELS GATE arrived at the Museum in 1992\, after almost 50 years of providing general towing services and goodwill tours for the Port of Los Angeles. \nTĀMINARU\n \nIn the early 20th century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish. Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally from the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor. \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara\, organized by Tara Fansler\, and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Japan Business Association with the assistance of the Terminal Islanders Club. \nPOSEIDON MODEL\n \nThere is a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS POSEIDON was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure”. \nFifteen men built the model over a period of three months. POSEIDON is 21 .5 feet long and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS QUEEN MARY\, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach\, California. \nNAVY HALL\n \nThe Museum building\, built-in 1941\, was originally used as a ferry terminal\, transporting people and automobiles between San Pedro and Terminal Island. The area of the first floor where cars would enter and exit is now used as the Navy Hall. \nANGELS GATE LIGHT\n \nThe Angels Gate Lighthouse (officially known as Los Angeles Harbor Light) has marked the entrance of Los Angeles Harbor through times of war and peace\, and even survived a tidal wave! The tower itself has undergone many changes through the years. The distinctive green flash of the Angels Gate Lighthouse remains a welcoming beacon to professional mariners and recreational boaters alike. \nKIDS EXHIBIT\n \nKids of all ages will discover what’s going on in the harbor today through a series of interactive games and activities in the children’s exhibit. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a close-up look at the nation’s busiest container port! Learn how cranes work\, imagine yourself in a variety of harbor professions\, build your own wharves\, test your knowledge of ships and cargo\, or just settle down and enjoy a nautical story!\nDue to Covid-19-related precautions\, the toys and costumes have been temporarily removed. \nCAUGHT\, CANNED\, AND EATEN\n \nThe Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) was the fishing capital of the nation for much of the twentieth century. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna\, sardines\, mackerel\, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. \nToday\, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed\, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries endures. \nCOMMERCIAL DIVING\n \n  \nThis exhibit is an introduction to just a few of the thousands of jobs performed by commercial divers and fishery divers in the South Bay\, and was the inspiration of the late Torrance R. Parker\, noted commercial diver and author of 20\,000 Jobs Under the Sea. \nSCHOOL TOURS\nThe museum is pleased to offer educational tours throughout the year at no charge. \nThe museum is located on the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor. Students will have a front-row opportunity to see the massive container ships in action and learn about international trade\, ship terminology\, sailor’s art\, and the history of the working people who built Los Angeles harbor into the nation’s busiest container port. \nTours are free for grades K-12\, Wednesday –Friday mornings\, and reservations are REQUIRED. The museum is unable to accommodate group tours without a reservation. \nCall the tour hotline at 310-548-2900 and schedule your tour today\, or email info@lamaritimemuseum.org. \nRESEARCH\nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum Research Library is home to thousands of books\, historic photographs and archival documents waiting for you to discover! \nResearch questions can be directed to info@lamaritimemuseum.org and 310-548-7618 ext. 215. \nPortions of our collection have online finding aids and digital records: \nOnline Archive of California (OAC) \nOnline Digital Collections \n\nSuggested Donation:\nAdults $5\nSeniors (62+) $3\nChildren 12 & under FREE\nHours\nMonday-Tuesday: Closed\nWednesday – Sunday: 12:00pm – 5:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.lamaritimemuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:OPEN SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS- LAX\nThe Flight Path Museum & Learning Center is an aviation and aerospace museum with unique artifacts and views of the LAX runway. Flight Path Learning Center of Southern California was founded in 1995 as a nonprofit\, community-based organization to honor aviation pioneers\, recognize the economic importance of aviation and aerospace to Southern California\, and encourage youth to pursue education and careers in aviation-related fields. The gallery showcases a colorful and informative timeline of space exploration history together with a number of important space artifacts. Included is the flight suit of astronaut Gen. Kevin P. Chilton\, commander of the Endeavour and Atlantis space shuttles. \nThere is an extension to the exhibit in the entrance courtyard where a piece from a spacecraft that has re-entered the atmosphere can be observed. \n\n\n\n\n\nFLYING TIGERS EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlying Tiger Line\, also known as Flying Tigers\, was the first scheduled cargo airline in the United States and a major military charter operator during the Cold War era for both cargo and personnel. The airline was bought by Federal Express in 1988.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe airline was named after the Flying Tigers fighter unit of World War II\, officially the 1st American Volunteer Group. Ten former AVG pilots formed the Flying Tiger Line (established as National Skyway Freight) after returning to the United States in 1945\, using a small fleet of Budd Company C-93 Conestoga freighters purchased as war surplus from the United States Navy. The pilots and two ground crew provided half of the initial investment\, with the balance coming from California oil tycoon Samuel B. Mosher. For the next four years\, Flying Tiger Line carried air freight on contract throughout the U.S. and\, as the airline expanded\, carrying supplies to U.S. troops under Gen. Douglas MacArthur during the occupation of Japan. \n  \n\n\n\n\nFIRE FIGHTING VEHICLE EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn permanent display on the airside of the museum is a retied ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting)  truck used at LAX. The Oshkosh M3000 model was manufactured by Oshkosh Corporation in Appleton\, Wisconsin and entered service at LAX in 1995\, it stayed in operation for about a decade and a half. Maximum operating load is 148\,000lbs\, 3\,000 gallons of water and 500 gallons of foam. Made to reach potential accidents sites at top speed\, it reached speeds of 50mph in a sprint.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nToday\, ARFF operations at LAX are conducted out of one station near the center of the airport\, Station 80 is a part of the Los Angeles Fire Department. They currently operate six Panther trucks manufactured by Rosenbauer America. In addition to ARFF operations\, there is a city fire-station that responds to EMS and non-ARFF emergencies on the airfield located within the airport operations area adjacent to Sepulveda Blvd. \n\nAdmission\nMUSEUM TIMED VISIT: ADULT (ONE HOUR): $5.00 \nMUSEUM TIMED VISIT: CHILD\, SENIOR\, MILITARY OR LAX BADGED (ONE HOUR): $3.00 \n\nHours\nSunday – Saturday: 12:00pm – 4:00pm \n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://flightpathlax.com/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:LEGO BUILDERS AT THE INGLEWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY
DESCRIPTION:EVERY MONDAY – INGLEWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY\nDesign. Construct. Create. The best way to foster your child’s creativity is by providing them with the tools to build their own world and let their imagination soar. Join us at Inglewood Public Library – Children’s Services\, every Monday from 4 pm – 5 pm. The Lego Bricks is specially designed for children to build\, learn and create exciting play experiences. This will help develop your child’s imagination and love of building! \n\n\nTHE LEGO BRAND VALUES\nImagination\nFree play is how children develop their imagination – the foundation for creativity. Curiosity asks WHY and imagines possible explanations. Playfulness asks WHAT IF and imagines how the ordinary becomes extraordinary fantasy or fiction. Dreaming is the first step toward doing it.\n\nCreativity\nCreativity is the ability to come up with ideas that are new\, surprising\, and valuable – and it’s an essential 21st-century skill. Systematic creativity is a particular form of creativity that combines logic and reasoning with playfulness and imagination.\n\n\nFun\nFun is being active together\, the thrill of an adventure\, the joyful enthusiasm of children\, and the delight in surprising both yourself and others in what you can do or create. Fun is the happiness we experience when we are fully engaged in something that requires mastery when our abilities are in balance with the challenge at hand and we are making progress towards a goal.\n\nLearning\nLearning is about being curious\, experimenting\, and collaborating – expanding our thinking and doing\, helping us develop new insights and new skills. We learn through play by putting things together\, taking them apart\, and putting them together in different ways. Building\, un-building\, rebuilding\, thereby creating new things and developing new ways of thinking about ourselves\, and the world.\n\nCaring\nCaring is about our desire to make a positive difference in the lives of children\, our colleagues\, our partners\, and the world we live in. Doing that little extra\, not because we have to – but because it feels right and because we care.\n\nQuality\nFor us\, quality means the challenge of continuous improvement to provide the best play material\, the best for children and their development\, and the best to our community and partners. From a reputation for manufacturing excellence to becoming trusted by all – we believe in quality that speaks for itself and earns us the recommendation of all.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT INGLEWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY \nLIBRARY MISSION\nThe mission of the Inglewood Public Library is to provide access to informational\, educational\, and recreational services and resources responsive to the library’s diverse communities. \nMAIN LIBRARY\n \n\n101 W. SUMMARY:The Old LA Zoo
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year. \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure. \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. There are lots of little spaces to crawl into\, AND stairs to climb up. \n  \n \nFollow the path around to get to the upper lever where you will find even more cages & enclosures. \n \nIf you are going to come for a visit\, make sure to bring a bottle of water and your imagination. \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfriendsofgriffithpark.org\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Graham Garden
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY DAY- DTLA Wells Fargo Center\nGraham Garden integrates Fountain Figures I-IV\, a collection of graceful sculptures created by late Los Angeles artist Robert Graham\, in a newly designed outdoor plaza at Halo. For over fifty years\, Robert Graham’s observation of the female form and use of scale allowed him to explore and create a range of intimate sized works and large public monuments\, widely celebrated for their precise iconic detail. \nThe sculptures were originally part of CRA/LA’s mission in 1985 to incorporate public art in redevelopment projects and revitalize Downtown Los Angeles. With a belief that the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made\, the Broads took to collecting art of their own time. \nThe Broad is home to 2\,000 works in the Broad collection by more than 200 artists\, and is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. The collection features in-depth holdings of influential contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Mark Bradford\, Jasper Johns\, Jeff Koons\, Barbara Kruger\, Yayoi Kusama\, Kerry James Marshall\, Julie Mehretu\, Takashi Murakami\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, Cindy Sherman\, Cy Twombly\, Andy Warhol\, and more\, plus an ever-growing representation of younger artists. \n  \nView Our Collection Here\n \nIn Under the Table\, 1994\, the viewer is both in the world of imaginary giants and in the world of remembered childhood. Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. When standing close to it\, one’s own distorted reflection bends around smooth pert curves. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission is Free\nAll visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance. Some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge. \n\n\n\n\n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Wednesday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.\nThursday – Friday: 11:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.\nSaturday: 10:00 a.m.-8:00p.m.\nSunday: 10:00 a.m.-6:00p.m. \n\n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.thebroad.org/visit/mirror-rooms\n \n  \nFind more
