The water activities including harbor cruises\, seasonal whale watching\, kayaks\, pedal boats and S.U.P. rentals or find a unique gift or souvenir for someone special. \n \nRedondo Beach Pier recently renovated after a disastrous fire\, and is one of the most beloved and popular spots in Los Angeles. Hundreds of people come here daily to stroll the 70\,000-square-foot landmark located in King Harbor. There are a few small shops and some great fast-food restaurants serving burgers\, fish and chips\, and more. DESCRIPTION:3 WEEK CHROMEBOOK & HOTSPOT LOANS- Los Angeles County Libraries\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorrow a Chromebook and Wi-Fi hotspot to access the internet.\n\n\nYou can now checkout a Google Chromebook and Wireless Hotspot for 3 weeks\, from any Los Angeles County Library Sidewalk Service FREE! Do you know anyone without internet or a computer at home who would benefit from borrowing them—to apply for jobs\, access homeschooling resources\, or simply stay connected to information? \nYou can now check out a kit with a Chromebook and wireless hotspot to access the internet (plus chargers) inside a handy carrying case\, from any Sidewalk Service location. \nPlease call any Sidewalk Service location to place a hold on a Laptop & Hotspot Loan Kit. Borrow for 3 weeks\, with the option to renew\, if available. \nPlease note: Laptop & Hotspot Loan Kits require a full access card to check out. Call your nearest Sidewalk Service location for details about signing up or upgrading your digital card. \nFunding for this project has been provided by the Coronavirus Aid\, Relief\, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1. How do I check out a Chromebook kit?\nRequests for Chromebook kits can be made using our online catalog or over the phone\, like any of our other materials. At this time requests are site-specific and can only be placed at libraries offering the service (listed above). Call a library offering the service to arrange a same-day checkout\, if kits are available.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3. When can I pick up my Laptop & Hotspot?\nCall the owning library and arrange to pick up your kit during Sidewalk Service hours.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4. How long can I keep the Laptop & Hotspot Loan? Can I renew?\nThe kits can be borrowed for 3 weeks. If no other customers are on the waiting list\, the checkout can be renewed up to 3 times. The renewal needs to be made before your checkout period ends.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n5. How do I return the Chromebook Kit?\nChromebooks must be returned in person to the owning library during Sidewalk Service hours. They cannot be returned in the bookdrop. They cannot be returned to any library other than the one where the kit was checked out. Please call the owning library to arrange a drop-off time and call again once at the library to alert staff. Staff will bring out a box labeled Laptop Return to the Sidewalk Service table. You’ll be instructed to remove all items – the Chromebook\, the wireless hotspot\, and both charging cables – from the carrying case. Put the case into the box first\, on the bottom\, and then put all other items in on top. Staff will check the box to make sure all items are inside and that they look fine. All items will be quarantined for 4 days and confirmed to be working properly before being checked in. Staff will contact you if there are any questions or concerns. Please remember that the loan will still show on your account until the quarantine and check-in process is complete.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n6. Are there late fees?\nLate fees will be assessed the same as all other library materials. The Chromebook will become disabled once the loan period has ended.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n7. Will I be charged if the Chromebook is damaged while in my possession? How much?\nYes\, fees will depend on the type of damage.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n8. Will my documents stay on the Chromebook after I return it?\nAll documents are deleted once the Chromebook is shut down. This will happen even during your 3-week checkout period\, so we advise you to back up your documents on a flash drive or in Google Docs if you are working on something you want to keep.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9. What programs will be included on the Chromebook?\n\n\nAdobe Acrobat Reader\nDocuSign\nGoogle Calendar\nGoogle Drive/Docs\nSkype\nWordPress\nInternet\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10. Does the Chromebook include the internet?\nA wireless hotspot device is included when you check out the Chromebook. This will give you access to the internet.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11. Can I print things through the library?\nYes\, you can use our Wi-Fi printing service on the borrowed Chromebook and send your documents wirelessly to any library that offers Sidewalk Service.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12. Will library staff provide an orientation on the technology when I check it out?\nA basic instruction sheet will be provided explaining how to turn on and connect the equipment. Will Library staff help me use the Chromebook or answer technical questions?\nLibrary staff is able to provide basic help with your computer—like how to turn it on\, connect the wireless hotspot\, or how to locate programs. For over fifty years\, Robert Graham’s observation of the female form and use of scale allowed him to explore and create a range of intimate sized works and large public monuments\, widely celebrated for their precise iconic detail. \nThe sculptures were originally part of CRA/LA’s mission in 1985 to incorporate public art in redevelopment projects and revitalize Downtown Los Angeles. The four sculptures are currently situated in an exterior landscaped setting that Graham’s son\, Steven Graham\, consulted on as part of the renovation at Wells Fargo Center. \n  \n \nRobert Graham\, was a Mexican born sculptor\, and although you may not be familiar with his name\, you probably ARE familiar with some of his work. Graham’s monumental bronzes commemorate the human figure\, and are featured in 11 public places in and around the city of Angels. SUMMARY:Hike To The Hollywood Sign
DESCRIPTION:HIKING TO THE SIGN\nThe Hollywood Sign is the most famous icon of the city of Los Angeles\, and there are three routes below ranked from easy to difficult. The Mt Hollywood Trail\, The Brush Canyon Trail\, and The Cahuenga Peak Trail (currently closed)\n\nStunning views of the Hollywood Sign unfold at your own pace on hiking trails that meander through the rolling chaparral of the Santa Monica Mountains.  Trails originally blazed by paws\, hooves\, and yucca-thatched moccasins now connect us to cultural as well as natural wonders. The western frontier of Griffith Park offers hikers amazingly close encounters with the Sign\, which is off-limits to human hands\, just below the ridgeline at the 1\,708-foot summit of Mt. Lee. On the longest hike\, you can ascend above and behind the Sign’s 45-foot-tall aluminum letters\, where you look out over a windswept vista encompassing the DOOWYLLOH sign\, the dreamy towers of downtown Los Angeles\, and\, on a clear day\, the ageless blue Pacific.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom behind\, the Sign reads DOOWYLLOH\nAuthorized hiking trails are open the same hours as Griffith Park\, from Sunrise to Sunset\, 365 days a year.  While enjoying hiking\, please stay on authorized trails. \nPlease beware of the extreme fire danger on the trails\, parts of which are still recovering after a devastating wildfire in 2007. Trespassing is illegal. A LAPD officer is stationed near the Sign\, which is protected by a fence and security cameras 24 hours a day. Thank you. \n \nEasy Way:\nThe Mt. Hollywood Trail\, \noffering a mind-bending side-angle view of the Sign\, has two starting points in Griffith Park\, the 6.5 square miles of protected wilderness AKA the heart and lungs of Los Angeles (Hours: Sunrise – Sunset). The shorter loop hike of about three miles starts at Griffith Observatory’s parking lot\, which is free and fills up early on weekends. \nA slightly longer and steeper trail with fewer people starts on a fire road intersecting N. Vermont Canyon Rd.\, just past the Greek Theater\, where hardy hikers find plenty of street parking. \n\n \nThe Charlie Turner Trailhead marker \n\nThe most popular route up Mt. Hollywood\, the second highest peak in the park\, is suitable for families with children. It begins at the Charlie Turner Trailhead\, named to honor a longtime park volunteer. You can use the restrooms at the Observatory and ask a park ranger about conditions on the trail. Summer can be scorching up there\, so be sure and carry plenty of water. Sandals and flip-flops are not the best footwear in snake country. The trailhead sign and landscaping are at the north end of the Observatory parking lot. The hike begins with a short\, easy ascent along a ridge. \nLook for the Mt. Hollywood trailhead sign and landscaping at the north end of the Observatory parking lot. The hike (where leashed dogs are legal but unleashed ones common) isn’t likely to cross paths with P-22\, the mountain lion that traversed two freeways to take up residence in the wilds of Griffith Park in 2012. Start walking up a short\, easy ascent along a ridge through authentic wild chaparral where you may spot purple and orange wildflowers in the spring and red Toyon berries on California Holly bushes in the fall. In less than a half- mile\, you come upon a cooling grove of pine trees called the Berlin Forest\, planted by real Berliners to honor their sister-city status with Los Angeles. There are tables and benches\, and a beautiful view of the Hollywood Sign framed by pine boughs. Be on the lookout year-round for Zorro-masked Mountain Chickadees in the conifers and orange and yellow flame-headed Western Tanagers in the scrub. \n\nThe entrance to Dante’s View\nAfter another gently up-sloped half-mile\, you reach a four-way crossroads. The left fork goes around the west side of Mt. Hollywood toward a rest stop called Captain’s Roost. The right fork leads around the east side to a well-kept “folk” garden called Dante’s View. The Friends of Griffith Park have recently been planting and nurturing more native plants around the rest stop gardens\, which were severely burned in 2007. Both provide shade (there’s also a water fountain at Dante’s View) and restorative views of the Observatory and the city to the south and the Hollywood Sign to the west. The 1\,625-foot Mt. Hollywood summit is about one-quarter mile beyond both stops and consists of a coastal sage scrubby knob with protective railing. The slightly cockeyed view of the letters in the Hollywood Sign is from a perspective just a few degrees off dead center\, and almost directly at eye level. READ MORE \n\n \n\nMODERATE:\nThe Brush Canyon Trail\, \nalso part of Griffith Park\, features a fun side trip to Adam West’s Bat Cave\, home of the Batmobile in the 60’s Batman TV series. Locals know it as Bronson Caves\, and there’s a small parking lot close to the trailhead on Canyon Drive and an overflow dirt parking lot just down the road. The trail offers sensational views of the city and ends behind the Hollywood Sign. The old rock quarry tunnel has figured in many movies\, from 1925’s Riders of the Purple Sage to 2010’s Megashark vs. Crocosaurus. \n\n \nA view from the Brush Canyon Trail. hike \n\nThe 6.5-mile trail to the Sign climbs more than a thousand feet through several healthy ecosystems\, so hikers need to give it three hours and carry plenty of water. If there aren’t too many unleashed dogs\, you might see mule deer\, bobcats\, coyotes\, and rattlesnakes. Look up for Cooper’s Hawks soaring in the thermals over the Sign and down for honeybees probing the wildflowers. READ MORE \nNOTE: Reservations are NOT currently required on this hike. However\, access might be closed off during the day depending on overcrowding. \n \nDIFFICULT:CLOSED\nThe Cahuenga Peak Hike\,\nacross a short saddle from Mt. Lee\, runs through the latest 138-acre addition to Griffith Park and offers wide angle views of the Hollywood Reservoir and the San Fernando Valley. Suitable for the more experienced hiker\, it begins on the Aileen Getty Ridge Trail and includes the Hugh Hefner Overlook\, both named for two of the many benefactors and community activists who raised the money to save the land from a luxury housing development in 2012. \n \nThe trail is more rugged and less defined than the Canyon Blvd. trail. It includes the famous Wisdom Tree and traverses an area where the park’s resident mountain lion\, P-22\, has been spotted (usually after dark when the park is closed). If any symptoms are present\,\nyou may not enter the facility.\nThough there is not a mask mandate for the outdoor areas of the garden\, there is one for entering buildings (including restrooms) on City property.\nMaintain social distancing of 6 ft. from non-household members while on City property.\n\nPlease note that in case of significant rain within 24 hours of your scheduled visit time The Garden will be closed.\nYou should email the “contact the event organizer” link the day of your visit if rain occurs to verify.\nIn addition\, all regular Garden visiting rules (see “Garden Etiquette”) apply during your time slot. Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. No special clothing is required\, and participants are welcome to join for five minutes or enjoy the entire 30 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese free weekly drop-in sessions usually take place in the Hammer’s Billy Wilder Theater but are now offered live online via Zoom. \nMindful Awareness Meditation is provided by UCLA & The Hammer Museum\n  \nff \n\nSessions are led by Diana Winston and other instructors from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. DESCRIPTION:A LITTLE BIT OF TOKYO IN LITTLE TOKYO- Japanese American National Museum\n\nThe James Irvine Japanese Garden is a traditional Japanese Garden located on the Little Tokyo campus of the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center. The garden is open to the public for enjoyment seven days a week between 10am and 4pm unless there is a special event. The Garden also serves as a unique and elegant venue for weddings\, photo shoots\, memorial services and other private events. \n\n\n\nHistory\n\nEstablished in 1981. \nA centerpiece of the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center\, the Garden also known as Seiryu-en or the Garden of the Clear Stream\, was constructed by more than 200 volunteers who contributed more than 3\,000 man-hours. The garden was designed by landscape architect Dr. Takeo Uesugi and received the National Landscape Award in 1981\, the nation’s highest award for environmental improvement and community beautification. Most recently\, the James Irvine Japanese Garden underwent a major restoration with the purpose of creating a revitalized green space in downtown Los Angeles and sharing the aesthetics of Japanese culture with the community. The James Irvine Garden has served the community\, for nearly three decades\, by providing a tranquil and elegant departure from the urban landscape. It is the intent of the Board of Directors\, staff\, members and volunteers of the Japanese American Community & Cultural Center that this tradition be maintained for the benefit of all. \n\n\n\n\n100 North Central Avenue\, Los Angeles\, California 90012 \n \nJapanese American National Museum is the first gallery in the United States dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry as an integral part of U.S. story.
