In fact\, they tend to have better mobility overall.\nVR gaming improves spatial attention in children and gives them the ability to quickly locate a target in a field of distractors\, which has proven to be a good predictor of driving ability.\nPlaying VR games\, which often resemble actual real-world experiences\, helps children translate the skills they learned in these educational VR environments to the real world.\nAccording to recent research\, children that play shooting games have increased vision capabilities. Scientists have found that the fast-paced games increase adrenaline and dopamine in the brain which helps maintain and improve brain health.\nVR gaming increases mental flexibility and improves a child’s ability to quickly switch seamlessly between tasks with conflicting demands.\nVR games are a great way to reduce stress and depression in children. Immersing in a VR game can result in short and long-term mood boost that helps them relax and unwind\, decreasing the levels of stress a person may be experiencing.\n\n  \n \n\nCome to The Inglewood Public Library and “check out” their new selection of video games\, for Playstation 4\, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One\, that you can borrow\, just like you would borrow a book? \n \nDid you finish your homework? SUMMARY:The Nethercutt Museum
DESCRIPTION:FREE EVERY THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Sylmar\n\n\nFounder JB Nethercutt spent a lifetime establishing this collection of historic importance. Unique to automobile museums\, each car on display is attentively serviced and maintained to remain as drivable as when the vehicle originally rolled off the showroom floor. On view are various Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance winners and cars once owned by movie stars\, royalty and other notable personalities. \n  \n\nBuilding ONE: The Nethercutt Museum FREE!\nThe entire collection is housed in two beautifully appointed exhibit facilities located just north of Los Angeles. Housed in the Museum is the Nethercutt Automotive Research Library and Archives \, one of the world’s top automotive research facilities. Just steps outside the Museum are a resplendently restored steam locomotive and railcar. \nOpened in 1971\, The Nethercutt Collection is a not-for-profit educational institution and a resource for automobile enthusiasts\, historians\, students and scholars. It is open to the public at no charge. The Nethercutt Museum showcases more than 130 of the world’s greatest antique\, vintage\, classic and special interest automobiles including many top winners of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. \n\n\n  \n \nTHE ANTIQUE ERA (1890s – 1915)\nInnovation and experimentation were at the heart of this era and provided the catalyst for the automobiles’ development. By the late-19th century\, “horseless carriages” were being built by small groups of artisans\, craftsmen and engineers on a small scale\, with many taking characteristics from the wagons they were replacing. \n\n\nTHE VINTAGE ERA (1916 – 1924)\nA class of cars that came to be known today as “vintage\,” fits in between the expensive coach built brands that became classics and the inexpensive models represented by Ford\, Chevrolet and Dodge. These cars sold for between $500 and $2\,000. They had basic engineering features but had better cosmetic appointments such as visors\, cigar lighters and wool broadcloth interiors. \n  \n \nTHE CLASSIC ERA (1925 – 1948)\nThis era elevated the common automobile to a status symbol\, as evidenced by their cost. When common vehicles sold for $400 to about $1\,200\, the classic car had a price tag of $2\,000 to $20\,000. \n  \n\nTHE POST-WAR ERA (1945 – 1970s)\nThroughout the 1950s\, engine power and vehicle speeds rose\, designs became better integrated and more stylized\, and cars grew more popular across the world. The auto market slightly shifted in the 1960s\, causing Detroit to worry about foreign competition. European makers adopted even greater technology and Japan appeared as a serious car-producing nation. \n  \n \nTHE MUSEUM LOCOMOTIVE & PRIVATE CAR\n1937 Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson Locomotive #2839: \n#2839 was built by Montreal Locomotive Works and is resplendent in its Royal maroon\, gold leaf\, gloss black and brushed stainless steel livery\, is a testament to the grand era of steam locomotive engineering. The Hudson type is a 4-6-4 wheel arrangement and was a high-speed passenger locomotive with a top speed of 90 mph. \n1912 Pullman Private Car #100 California: \nCustom built by Pullman in Chicago\, Illinois for Clara Baldwin Stocker the eldest Daughter of local Pioneer “Lucky” Baldwin. This railcar has been beautifully restored back to 1912 \nBuilding TWO: The Nethercutt Collection: Available by Tour Only  advanced reservations are required- $10\n  \n \nLower Salon\n\nThe Lower Salon is where guests assemble to start the guided tour. The salon is a microcosm of the entire collection. There are about 25 automobiles dating from the early 1900’s up till the late 1940’s. Also in display are nickelodeons\, music boxes\, David Winter Cottages\, Dolls\, Coins\, and crystal figurines. \n  \n\n \nGrand Salon\n\nMarble columns\, crystal chandeliers\, painted ceilings all make up this beautiful Grand Salon Showroom of the 1910’s\, 20 and 30s. On display are approx. 30 of the finest automoblies of that era. Duesenbergs\, Cadillacs\, Isotta-Fraschini\, Delahaye\, Minvera\, Renault\, Maybach\, many other European and American built automoblies. \n  \n\n \nAutomobile Collectibles and Antiques\n\nOn the third floor is a large assortment of Radiator Hood Ornaments “Mascots”\, including Lalique Crystal Mascots and 18th & 19th Century French Furniture \n  \n \nInstruments\n\nThis area displays a world-class collection of automated mechanical instruments including musical repeat striking watches\, Swiss bird boxes\, cylinder and disc music boxes\, and grand pianos. The tour culminates with demonstrations of select orchestrations and the 5\,000-piped Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ. \n\nHours\nThursday – Saturday: 9:00am – 4:30pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nnethercuttcollection.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:IAMLA Italian American Museum of Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY TO SUNDAY  – Italian American Museum of Los Angeles\nThe Italian American Museum of Los Angeles\, or IAMLA\, is located in the historic Italian Hall\, which was constructed in 1908 to serve as a gathering place for the Italian community. Today\, the Italian Hall is the oldest remaining structure from Los Angeles’ Italian enclave and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \n \nTHE HISTORY\nItalians and Italian Americans have played an instrumental role in the development of Los Angeles as one of the world’s greatest metropolises\, yet the history of Italians in the region is largely unknown. Though Los Angeles is home to the nation’s fifth-largest Italian population today\, and the Italian presence in the American West predates the nation’s founding\, seldom is the city included in dialogs surrounding contemporary or historic Italian American communities. An examination of the region’s Italian roots reveals both the complexity of the Italian Diaspora and the exceptionally diverse fabric of Southern California’s history. \n \nThe Los Angeles Italian experience contrasts with that of Italian immigrants elsewhere in the country and reveals the complexity of the Italian American diaspora. Given the success that Italian Americans have achieved in the United States\, it is easy to forget that they\, like other minority groups\, faced considerable prejudice and hostility in their struggle to achieve the American Dream. In the American South\, Italians were a common target of lynchings and racially-motivated violence. In the early 20th century\, eugenicists described Italians as genetically inferior\, while political cartoons of the era depicted Italians as threats to American security and racial purity. \nTHE MISSION\nThe mission of the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles is to foster a deeper understanding of Southern California’s diverse heritage through research\, historic preservation\, exhibitions\, and educational programs that examine the history and continuing contributions of Italian Americans in multi-ethnic Los Angeles and the United States. \nThe IAMLA is a charity that depends on donations to accomplish its specific mission. As such\, the IAMLA does entertain requests for financial support to fund other organizations\, charitable or otherwise\, nor does it provide financial resources to artists\, scholars\, filmmakers\, etc. The IAMLA does not fund exhibitions or theatrical or cinematic productions\, nor is the museum rented for such projects. \n\nHours\nMonday: Closed\nTuesday – Sunday: 10:00am – 3:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.iamla.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Los Angeles Maritime Museum
DESCRIPTION:WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY – San Pedro\nDiscover the history of the Port of Los Angeles on land or at sea! Welcome to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum where our hardworking harbor tug ANGELS GATE provides educational tours while our historic museum building houses fascinating exhibits\, a research library\, a ham radio station\, and a gift shop. \nOPEN EVERY WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY FROM 12:00 pm TO 5:00 pm\nFREE TO CHILDREN AGES 12 AND UNDER\n\n\n\nBerth 84\, Foot of 6th St.\, San Pedro\, CA 90731 \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum is housed in the former Municipal Ferry Terminal building\, located on the main channel of the Los Angeles Harbor. It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84\, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). \nThe ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. It is the largest maritime museum on the West Coast. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by Modernist architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. \n\nEXHIBITS\nANGELS GATE TUGBOAT\n \nThe tugboat ANGELS GATE arrived at the Museum in 1992\, after almost 50 years of providing general towing services and goodwill tours for the Port of Los Angeles. \nTĀMINARU\n \nIn the early 20th century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish. Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally from the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor. \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara\, organized by Tara Fansler\, and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Japan Business Association with the assistance of the Terminal Islanders Club. \nPOSEIDON MODEL\n \nThere is a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS POSEIDON was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure”. \nFifteen men built the model over a period of three months. POSEIDON is 21 .5 feet long and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS QUEEN MARY\, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach\, California. \nNAVY HALL\n \nThe Museum building\, built-in 1941\, was originally used as a ferry terminal\, transporting people and automobiles between San Pedro and Terminal Island. The area of the first floor where cars would enter and exit is now used as the Navy Hall. \nANGELS GATE LIGHT\n \nThe Angels Gate Lighthouse (officially known as Los Angeles Harbor Light) has marked the entrance of Los Angeles Harbor through times of war and peace\, and even survived a tidal wave! The tower itself has undergone many changes through the years. The distinctive green flash of the Angels Gate Lighthouse remains a welcoming beacon to professional mariners and recreational boaters alike. \nKIDS EXHIBIT\n \nKids of all ages will discover what’s going on in the harbor today through a series of interactive games and activities in the children’s exhibit. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a close-up look at the nation’s busiest container port! Learn how cranes work\, imagine yourself in a variety of harbor professions\, build your own wharves\, test your knowledge of ships and cargo\, or just settle down and enjoy a nautical story!\nDue to Covid-19-related precautions\, the toys and costumes have been temporarily removed. \nCAUGHT\, CANNED\, AND EATEN\n \nThe Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) was the fishing capital of the nation for much of the twentieth century. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna\, sardines\, mackerel\, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. \nToday\, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed\, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries endures. \nCOMMERCIAL DIVING\n \n  \nThis exhibit is an introduction to just a few of the thousands of jobs performed by commercial divers and fishery divers in the South Bay\, and was the inspiration of the late Torrance R. Parker\, noted commercial diver and author of 20\,000 Jobs Under the Sea. \nSCHOOL TOURS\nThe museum is pleased to offer educational tours throughout the year at no charge. \nThe museum is located on the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor. Students will have a front-row opportunity to see the massive container ships in action and learn about international trade\, ship terminology\, sailor’s art\, and the history of the working people who built Los Angeles harbor into the nation’s busiest container port. \nTours are free for grades K-12\, Wednesday –Friday mornings\, and reservations are REQUIRED. In its original sense\, the term “museum” meant a spot dedicated to the muses – “a place where man’s mind could attain a mood of aloofness above everyday affairs.” By far the most important museum of antiquity was the great institution at Alexandria founded by Ptolemy Philadelphus in the third century before Christ\, (an endeavor supported by a grant from the treasury). And no treatment of the museum would be complete without mention of Noah’s Ark in which we find the complete Museum of Natural History the world has ever seen. \nThe Museum of Jurassic Technology traces its origins to this period when many of the essential collections of today were beginning to take form. Many exhibits which we today have come to know as part of the Museum were\, in fact\, formally part of other less well-known collections and were subsequently consolidated into the single collection which we have come to know as The Museum of Jurassic Technology and thus configured\, received great public acclaim as well as much discussion in scholastic circles. \n\nHours\nMonday – Wednesday: Closed\nThursday – Friday : 2:00pm – 8:00pm\nSaturday – Sunday: 12:00pm – 6:00pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.mjt.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Flight Path Museum at LAX
DESCRIPTION:OPEN SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS- LAX\nThe Flight Path Museum & Learning Center is an aviation and aerospace museum with unique artifacts and views of the LAX runway. Flight Path Learning Center of Southern California was founded in 1995 as a nonprofit\, community-based organization to honor aviation pioneers\, recognize the economic importance of aviation and aerospace to Southern California\, and encourage youth to pursue education and careers in aviation-related fields. The kickoff project was a series of sidewalk plaques in the LAX business district saluting aviation pioneers\, organizations and locations. This “Flight Path” is the aviation equivalent of the famed Hollywood Walk of Fame. \n \n\n  \nUnique among the fine aviation museums in Southern California is the Flight Path Museum’s location\, the only aviation museum and research center situated at a major airport and the only facility with a primary emphasis on contributions of civil aviation to the history and development of Southern California. \n\n\nThe Flight Path Museum gallery of exhibits\, filled with memories of aviation’s golden years\, is located adjacent to the LAX airfield\, where today’s aircraft and travelers arrive and depart the world’s busiest origin and destination airport. No other museum offers such a perspective on contemporary aircraft and aviation. \n\nExhibits\n\n\n\nCOMMERCIAL AVIATION HISTORY EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Flight Path museum houses an extensive collection of airline artifacts from the beginning of the commercial aviation era to present day. Experience the glamour of flight at the dawn of long-haul travel. \n  \n\n \n\n\nFLIGHT CREW UNIFORM EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlight Path has over 600 uniforms from 68 airlines from around the world covering most of commercial flight history. Several pieces were special editions to mark specific events. Several of the uniforms are on display\, while others can be viewed by request in the archive. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n \nDC-3 PLANE EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Douglas DC-3 is a propeller-driven airliner which had a lasting effect on the airline industry in the 1930s/1940s and World War II. It was developed as a larger\, improved 14-bed sleeper version of the Douglas DC-2. It is a low-wing metal monoplane with a tailwheel landing gear\, with a cruise speed of 207 mph (333 km/h)\, commercial capacity of 21 to 32 passengers or 6\,000 lbs (2\,700 kg) of cargo\, a range of 1\,500 mi (2\,400 km)\, and could operate from short runways.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Aircraft was displayed for many years at the California Science Center in Exposition Park in Los Angeles. It has been on loan to the Flight Path Museum LAX since September 2006. \n  \n\n\n\n\nSPACE EXPLORATION EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAstronaut Flight Suit\nSpace Debris\nModel Rockets\nTribute to 50 years since the Apollo Program\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlight Path hosts the Space Exploration Gallery that spotlights the history and development of space flight. The gallery showcases a colorful and informative timeline of space exploration history together with a number of important space artifacts. Included is the flight suit of astronaut Gen. Kevin P. Chilton\, commander of the Endeavour and Atlantis space shuttles. \nThere is an extension to the exhibit in the entrance courtyard where a piece from a spacecraft that has re-entered the atmosphere can be observed. \n\n\n\n\n\nFLYING TIGERS EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlying Tiger Line\, also known as Flying Tigers\, was the first scheduled cargo airline in the United States and a major military charter operator during the Cold War era for both cargo and personnel. The airline was bought by Federal Express in 1988.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe airline was named after the Flying Tigers fighter unit of World War II\, officially the 1st American Volunteer Group. Ten former AVG pilots formed the Flying Tiger Line (established as National Skyway Freight) after returning to the United States in 1945\, using a small fleet of Budd Company C-93 Conestoga freighters purchased as war surplus from the United States Navy. The pilots and two ground crew provided half of the initial investment\, with the balance coming from California oil tycoon Samuel B. Mosher. For the next four years\, Flying Tiger Line carried air freight on contract throughout the U.S. and\, as the airline expanded\, carrying supplies to U.S. troops under Gen. Douglas MacArthur during the occupation of Japan. \n  \n\n\n\n\nFIRE FIGHTING VEHICLE EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn permanent display on the airside of the museum is a retied ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting)  truck used at LAX. The Oshkosh M3000 model was manufactured by Oshkosh Corporation in Appleton\, Wisconsin and entered service at LAX in 1995\, it stayed in operation for about a decade and a half. Maximum operating load is 148\,000lbs\, 3\,000 gallons of water and 500 gallons of foam. Made to reach potential accidents sites at top speed\, it reached speeds of 50mph in a sprint.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nToday\, ARFF operations at LAX are conducted out of one station near the center of the airport\, Station 80 is a part of the Los Angeles Fire Department. They currently operate six Panther trucks manufactured by Rosenbauer America. In addition to ARFF operations\, there is a city fire-station that responds to EMS and non-ARFF emergencies on the airfield located within the airport operations area adjacent to Sepulveda Blvd. \n\nAdmission\nMUSEUM TIMED VISIT: ADULT (ONE HOUR): $5.00 \nMUSEUM TIMED VISIT: CHILD\, SENIOR\, MILITARY OR LAX BADGED (ONE HOUR): $3.00 \n\nHours\nSunday – Saturday: 12:00pm – 4:00pm \n\n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://flightpathlax.com/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
