With a focus on contemporary art made from craft media and processes\, Craft Contemporary presents dynamic exhibitions by established and emerging artists and designers who are often underrepresented in larger art institutions. Craft Contemporary complements these exhibitions with a creative line-up of educational programs\, including hands-on workshops led by professional artists. Craft Contemporary cultivates an environment for people in Los Angeles to deepen their relationship to art\, creativity\, and one another. \n \nOUR HISTORY\n⁣In 2018\, the museum board of trustees voted to change the name of the Craft & Folk Art Museum to Craft Contemporary to best reflect its current mission. The name Craft Contemporary was chosen to emphasize the word ‘craft’ as a verb and a noun—celebrating both the act and outcome of making. Craft Contemporary continues to respect the deep history of the craft field while also looking forward to its bold and exciting future. \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncraftcontemporary.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. For highlights of the Meteorite Gallery please click here. \n  \n  \n \n  \nWe are eager to add meteorites to the UCLA collection. If you have a meteorite collection and are interested in considering a donation\, we would like to hear from you. You can contact us here. \n \nLOCATION\nThe Meteorite Gallery is located in room 3697 of the Geology Building on the UCLA campus. \n595 Charles E. SUMMARY:LEGO BUILDERS AT THE INGLEWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY
DESCRIPTION:EVERY MONDAY – INGLEWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY\nDesign. Construct. Create. The best way to foster your child’s creativity is by providing them with the tools to build their own world and let their imagination soar. Join us at Inglewood Public Library – Children’s Services\, every Monday from 4 pm – 5 pm. The Lego Bricks is specially designed for children to build\, learn and create exciting play experiences. This will help develop your child’s imagination and love of building! \n\n\nTHE LEGO BRAND VALUES\nImagination\nFree play is how children develop their imagination – the foundation for creativity. Curiosity asks WHY and imagines possible explanations. Playfulness asks WHAT IF and imagines how the ordinary becomes extraordinary fantasy or fiction. Dreaming is the first step toward doing it.\n\nCreativity\nCreativity is the ability to come up with ideas that are new\, surprising\, and valuable – and it’s an essential 21st-century skill. Systematic creativity is a particular form of creativity that combines logic and reasoning with playfulness and imagination.\n\n\nFun\nFun is being active together\, the thrill of an adventure\, the joyful enthusiasm of children\, and the delight in surprising both yourself and others in what you can do or create. Fun is the happiness we experience when we are fully engaged in something that requires mastery when our abilities are in balance with the challenge at hand and we are making progress towards a goal.\n\nLearning\nLearning is about being curious\, experimenting\, and collaborating – expanding our thinking and doing\, helping us develop new insights and new skills. We learn through play by putting things together\, taking them apart\, and putting them together in different ways. Building\, un-building\, rebuilding\, thereby creating new things and developing new ways of thinking about ourselves\, and the world.\n\nCaring\nCaring is about our desire to make a positive difference in the lives of children\, our colleagues\, our partners\, and the world we live in. Doing that little extra\, not because we have to – but because it feels right and because we care.\n\nQuality\nFor us\, quality means the challenge of continuous improvement to provide the best play material\, the best for children and their development\, and the best to our community and partners. From a reputation for manufacturing excellence to becoming trusted by all – we believe in quality that speaks for itself and earns us the recommendation of all.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT INGLEWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY \nLIBRARY MISSION\nThe mission of the Inglewood Public Library is to provide access to informational\, educational\, and recreational services and resources responsive to the library’s diverse communities. \nMAIN LIBRARY\n \n\n101 W. SUMMARY:The Old LA Zoo
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year. \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure. \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. There are lots of little spaces to crawl into\, AND stairs to climb up. \n  \n \nFollow the path around to get to the upper lever where you will find even more cages & enclosures. \n \nIf you are going to come for a visit\, make sure to bring a bottle of water and your imagination. \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfriendsofgriffithpark.org\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Suihoen - The Japanese Garden
DESCRIPTION:NOW OPEN- Van Nuys\n \n6100 Woodley Ave\, Lake Balboa\, CA 91406 \n  \nNestled amidst the bustling San Fernando Valley lies an oasis of serenity – the Japanese Garden at Van Nuys\, also known as Suihōen (水芳園)\, meaning “garden of water and fragrance.” This captivating 6.5-acre sanctuary transports you to a world of tranquility\, offering a glimpse into traditional Japanese garden design and a chance to reconnect with nature’s calming embrace. \n \nA Journey Through Three Distinct Styles\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys is a masterpiece of design\, incorporating three distinct styles of Japanese gardens. As you embark on your exploration\, prepare to be enveloped by: \n\n\nTsukiyama (mountain borrowing) style: This style cleverly borrows the scenery of the surrounding hills\, creating the illusion of a much larger space. Let your imagination wander as the boundaries between the garden and the natural landscape seem to blur. \n\n\nChisen (pond garden) style: A central pond\, symbolizing the vastness of the ocean\, takes center stage in this style. Graceful bridges connect small islands within the pond\, adding a touch of whimsy and tranquility to the scene. Keep an eye out for the vibrant koi fish that call this pond their home. \n\n\nKare-sansui (dry landscape) style: Embrace the beauty of minimalism with the Kare-sansui style. Rocks\, sand\, and gravel are meticulously arranged to represent water and mountains\, creating a space for contemplation and reflection. \n\n\n  \n \n  \n \n  \nA Haven for Relaxation and Reflection\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys is more than just a visual treat. It’s a place to unwind\, de-stress\, and reconnect with your inner peace. \n\n\nStroll the Winding Paths: Meandering paths\, crafted from natural materials\, weave through the landscape\, inviting you on a journey of discovery. Allow yourself to be present in the moment\, savoring the sights\, sounds\, and scents of the garden. \n\n\nFind Serenity by the Koi Pond: The gentle murmur of water and the graceful dance of the koi fish create a calming atmosphere. Take a seat on a nearby bench and let the tranquility wash over you. \n\n\nUnwind Amidst the Dry Landscape: The stark beauty of the Kare-sansui style fosters a sense of peace and mindfulness. Allow the raked sand and meticulously placed rocks to inspire contemplation and a connection with nature’s simplicity. \n\n\n  \n \n  \nA Cultural Gem in the City\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys isn’t just a beautiful space; it’s a cultural gem. As you explore\, you’ll encounter traditional Japanese elements like: \n\n\nTorii gate: A traditional gate that marks the entrance to the garden\, signifying a transition from the everyday world to a sacred space. \n\n\nPagoda: A multi-tiered tower\, a familiar feature in Japanese gardens\, adds an architectural touch and a sense of history. \n\n\nTea house: While not always open to the public\, the presence of a tea house hints at the cultural significance of tea ceremonies in Japanese tradition. \n\n\n \n  \n \n  \nPlan Your Tranquil Escape\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys is open to the public free of charge (donations are appreciated). The garden is open Tuesday through Sunday\, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm\, offering a convenient escape during the workweek or a peaceful weekend retreat. \nEmbrace the Tranquility\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys awaits you. Immerse yourself in the calming beauty of this haven\, explore the intricacies of Japanese garden design\, and discover a place for relaxation\, reflection\, and a touch of cultural exploration. So\, take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life and find your moment of peace amidst the serenity of the Japanese Garden. \n  \n\nHours and Admission\n\n\n\nHours\nMonday – Thursday: \n\nMorning Reservation Window (9:30am – 12:00pm)\nAfternoon Reservation Window (1:00pm – 3:30pm)\nBetween 12:00pm – 1:00pm\, we are CLOSED\n\nWe are closed Friday through Sunday; closed on all Federal & City of Los Angeles Holidays; and closed within 24 hours of rain. \n——————————————————————————————————————————————————\nAdmission\nAdmission is currently Free! \nRight now\, our reservation system will be under maintenance\, so guests will NOT NEED A RESERVATION TO VISIT THE GARDEN.  During this time\, guests may arrive as “walk-ins.”  Please note the reservations system will eventually return! \nAdmission is free and guests are allowed a 2.5 hour window to visit the Japanese Garden.  Adherence to Terms and Conditions (listed below) are required. \n  \nTERMS AND CONDITIONS: \nSpace in the Garden is limited\, so visitors are permitted to visit either during the “Morning” or “Afternoon” window – they CANNOT visit for both in the same day\, as this would take away openings from other potential guest bookings. \nGroups of 10 or more people must call in the day of desired visitation to check if there is capacity available for their group. \nWhen guests arrive\, they must check in at the Security gate before entering the parking lot\, and then sign in at the Admission Office before entering the garden. \nThe 2.5 hour time window is strictly enforced and guests who arrive 15 minutes before the closing of that time window will not be allowed to enter.  Each group must exit the garden before their time window expires. \nAll members of the booking party must follow the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health COVID-19\nguidelines including\, but not limited to: \n\nPrior to attending your reservation you and all members of your party will conduct a self-symptom check\nfor cough\, shortness of breath\, and/or fever prior to entering the facility. SUMMARY:The Nethercutt Museum
DESCRIPTION:FREE EVERY THURSDAY – SUNDAY- Sylmar\n\n\nFounder JB Nethercutt spent a lifetime establishing this collection of historic importance. Unique to automobile museums\, each car on display is attentively serviced and maintained to remain as drivable as when the vehicle originally rolled off the showroom floor. On view are various Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance winners and cars once owned by movie stars\, royalty and other notable personalities. \n  \n\nBuilding ONE: The Nethercutt Museum FREE!\nThe entire collection is housed in two beautifully appointed exhibit facilities located just north of Los Angeles. Housed in the Museum is the Nethercutt Automotive Research Library and Archives \, one of the world’s top automotive research facilities. Just steps outside the Museum are a resplendently restored steam locomotive and railcar. \nOpened in 1971\, The Nethercutt Collection is a not-for-profit educational institution and a resource for automobile enthusiasts\, historians\, students and scholars. It is open to the public at no charge. The Nethercutt Museum showcases more than 130 of the world’s greatest antique\, vintage\, classic and special interest automobiles including many top winners of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. \n\n\n  \n \nTHE ANTIQUE ERA (1890s – 1915)\nInnovation and experimentation were at the heart of this era and provided the catalyst for the automobiles’ development. By the late-19th century\, “horseless carriages” were being built by small groups of artisans\, craftsmen and engineers on a small scale\, with many taking characteristics from the wagons they were replacing. \n\n\nTHE VINTAGE ERA (1916 – 1924)\nA class of cars that came to be known today as “vintage\,” fits in between the expensive coach built brands that became classics and the inexpensive models represented by Ford\, Chevrolet and Dodge. These cars sold for between $500 and $2\,000. They had basic engineering features but had better cosmetic appointments such as visors\, cigar lighters and wool broadcloth interiors. \n  \n \nTHE CLASSIC ERA (1925 – 1948)\nThis era elevated the common automobile to a status symbol\, as evidenced by their cost. When common vehicles sold for $400 to about $1\,200\, the classic car had a price tag of $2\,000 to $20\,000. \n  \n\nTHE POST-WAR ERA (1945 – 1970s)\nThroughout the 1950s\, engine power and vehicle speeds rose\, designs became better integrated and more stylized\, and cars grew more popular across the world. The auto market slightly shifted in the 1960s\, causing Detroit to worry about foreign competition. European makers adopted even greater technology and Japan appeared as a serious car-producing nation. \n  \n \nTHE MUSEUM LOCOMOTIVE & PRIVATE CAR\n1937 Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson Locomotive #2839: \n#2839 was built by Montreal Locomotive Works and is resplendent in its Royal maroon\, gold leaf\, gloss black and brushed stainless steel livery\, is a testament to the grand era of steam locomotive engineering. The Hudson type is a 4-6-4 wheel arrangement and was a high-speed passenger locomotive with a top speed of 90 mph. \n1912 Pullman Private Car #100 California: \nCustom built by Pullman in Chicago\, Illinois for Clara Baldwin Stocker the eldest Daughter of local Pioneer “Lucky” Baldwin. This railcar has been beautifully restored back to 1912 \nBuilding TWO: The Nethercutt Collection: Available by Tour Only  advanced reservations are required- $10\n  \n \nLower Salon\n\nThe Lower Salon is where guests assemble to start the guided tour. The salon is a microcosm of the entire collection. There are about 25 automobiles dating from the early 1900’s up till the late 1940’s. Also in display are nickelodeons\, music boxes\, David Winter Cottages\, Dolls\, Coins\, and crystal figurines. \n  \n\n \nGrand Salon\n\nMarble columns\, crystal chandeliers\, painted ceilings all make up this beautiful Grand Salon Showroom of the 1910’s\, 20 and 30s. On display are approx. 30 of the finest automoblies of that era. Duesenbergs\, Cadillacs\, Isotta-Fraschini\, Delahaye\, Minvera\, Renault\, Maybach\, many other European and American built automoblies. \n  \n\n \nAutomobile Collectibles and Antiques\n\nOn the third floor is a large assortment of Radiator Hood Ornaments “Mascots”\, including Lalique Crystal Mascots and 18th & 19th Century French Furniture \n  \n \nInstruments\n\nThis area displays a world-class collection of automated mechanical instruments including musical repeat striking watches\, Swiss bird boxes\, cylinder and disc music boxes\, and grand pianos. The tour culminates with demonstrations of select orchestrations and the 5\,000-piped Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ. \n\nHours\nThursday – Saturday: 9:00am – 4:30pm \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nnethercuttcollection.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:STEP BACK IN TIME- Venice Beach\nThe Venice Heritage Museum’s mission is to preserve\, showcase\, and nurture Venice’s diverse cultural heritage and history. The Venice Heritage Museum (VHM) gives visitors the opportunity to experience the stories of one of our country’s most culturally rich and innovative communities—Venice\, a Los Angeles\, California coastal community. \nVHM is a place for discovery\, displaying Venice’s accepting and progressive legacy and highlighting both well-known and untold histories. In the face of constant change\, VHM aims to be an inclusive hub to celebrate the diverse cultures and unique facets of Venice’s culture and history. \n\n\n\n\nLiving Heritage \n\nRotating exhibitions and events showcase our in-house and community archives\, representing Venice’s creative and socio-economically diverse histories. Collecting stories as local Venice community histories evolve and grow as we  develop a hub for the future as well as the past.\n\n\n\nCultural Representation \n\nProviding a permanent platform for Venice’s diverse communities\, highlighting both well-known and untold histories.\nRepresenting historical legacies through the words\, images\, and ephemera of community members themselves.\n\n\n\nStrengthening Community\n\nImproving the lives of local community members\, other Angelenos\, and visitors by deepening and enriching their understanding of Venice.\n\n\nServing as a common ground where all attendees can meet and gather to celebrate the Venice community’s unique culture.\n\n  \n\n\n \n\n\nEmpowering Youth \n\nEducating and empowering young people to take pride in their community\, their family histories\, and the stories of cultural innovators who have lived and worked in Venice\nNurturing youth to write the next chapter of the Venice history by becoming cultural stewards and storytellers in their own right\n\n \nPublic Knowledge Production\n\nVHM is interested in the full range of the heritage of Venetians. This range includes inherited traditions of tangible and intangible culture\, as well as contemporary activities\, meanings\, and behaviors that we draw from them.\nAs part of fulfilling our mission\, VHM preserves and highlights the cultural and collective stories of Venetians. Our work is to curate and collect stories\, artifacts\, memorabilia\, and memories and through them tell the stories/histories of the Venice community. VHM is interested to preserve source materials and produce new knowledge that is accessible to the communities and institutions that seek access to them.\n\n\n\nVenice’s heritage is uniquely rich\, as so many people in Venice come from different backgrounds. Over 115+ years\, Venice has experienced cultural shifts and economic turbulence\, and yet common threads are still found within the community. It is those shared commonalities that make all of us Venetians.\nHours\nThursday – Sunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \n  \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.veniceheritagemuseum.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
