With a focus on contemporary art made from craft media and processes\, Craft Contemporary presents dynamic exhibitions by established and emerging artists and designers who are often underrepresented in larger art institutions. Craft Contemporary complements these exhibitions with a creative line-up of educational programs\, including hands-on workshops led by professional artists. Craft Contemporary cultivates an environment for people in Los Angeles to deepen their relationship to art\, creativity\, and one another. \n \nOUR HISTORY\n⁣In 2018\, the museum board of trustees voted to change the name of the Craft & Folk Art Museum to Craft Contemporary to best reflect its current mission. The name Craft Contemporary was chosen to emphasize the word ‘craft’ as a verb and a noun—celebrating both the act and outcome of making. Craft Contemporary continues to respect the deep history of the craft field while also looking forward to its bold and exciting future. \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \ncraftcontemporary.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Old LA Zoo
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year. \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure. \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. There are lots of little spaces to crawl into\, AND stairs to climb up. \n  \n \nFollow the path around to get to the upper lever where you will find even more cages & enclosures. \n \nIf you are going to come for a visit\, make sure to bring a bottle of water and your imagination. \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfriendsofgriffithpark.org\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:The Venice Run Club
DESCRIPTION:EVERY WEEK\, EVERY RUN\, EVERY BODY- Santa Monica & Venice\nThe Venice Run Club is the heartbeat of Venice. A community of runners here to better ourselves and our community. Come run with us. \n48 for Change\nWith the combination of a global pandemic and civil unrest around racial injustice\, June of 2020 set the stage for important societal and human issues to finally come to light in a more permanent way. This was the same time that two friends\, Justin and Tyler\, decided they wanted to take action to make a difference in the injustices and inequality we see in our communities. \n  \n\n\n\nThe week of George Floyd’s passing\, Justin called Tyler voicing his frustration from Floyd’s murder and subsequent reactions\, and they joined forces to do a running challenge that very weekend that entailed running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. A GoFundMe was set up to collect funds from friends and family throughout the running challenge to donate to help support racial justice. \nWhat started as a way to take the mind off of the pressure cooker of injustice resulted in a massively successful and attention-grabbing fundraiser\, and eventually turned into a 501(c)3 nonprofit\, still strong and growing today: 48 For Change. \nAside from fundraising and donating\, Justin found that the community that gathered to run that weekend was something special\, and needed its own spotlight. A place where anyone can come and simply run with a group of good people. Venice Run Club was born. \nNearly two years later\, we have grown into a strong group of 200+ runners\, given back $100\,000 and over 1\,100lbs of clothing to the LA community\, guided over 40 runners to completing their first marathon\, and become On’s first-ever sponsored run club in America. \nCome make friends\, break a sweat\, and get to know the city in the best way possible: by running its streets. \n\n\n\n  \n\nWeekly Run Schedule\n\n\n\n\n\nTrack Tuesday- 7:30PM\n\nSanta Monica High School- 601 Pico Blvd\, Santa Monica\, CA 90405 \n\n\n\n\n\nMobbin Wednesday- 6:30pm\n\nThe Kinney Hotel- 737 Washington Blvd Venice\, CA 90292 \n\n\n\n\n\nLong Run Saturday- 8:30am\n\nThe Kinney Hotel- 737 Washington Blvd Venice\, CA 90292 \n\n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://venicerunclub.co/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

Grand Avenue\, Los Angeles\, CA 90012\n\nThe Broad makes its collection of contemporary art from the 1950s to the present accessible to the widest possible audience by presenting exhibitions and operating a lending program to art museums and galleries worldwide. \nBy actively building a dynamic collection that features in-depth representations of influential contemporary artists and by advancing education and engagement through exhibitions and diverse public programming\, the museum enriches\, provokes\, inspires\, and fosters appreciation of art of our time. \n \nThe Broad was founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. The Broad is home to 2\,000 works of art in the Broad collection\, which is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. \n  \n \nThe Broad from Home\nThe Broad is committed to inspiring and fostering an appreciation of contemporary art through our digital initiatives. With a belief that the greatest art collections are built when the art is being made\, the Broads took to collecting art of their own time. \nThe Broad is home to 2\,000 works in the Broad collection by more than 200 artists\, and is one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art. The collection features in-depth holdings of influential contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Mark Bradford\, Jasper Johns\, Jeff Koons\, Barbara Kruger\, Yayoi Kusama\, Kerry James Marshall\, Julie Mehretu\, Takashi Murakami\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Ed Ruscha\, Cindy Sherman\, Cy Twombly\, Andy Warhol\, and more\, plus an ever-growing representation of younger artists. \n  \nView Our Collection Here\n \nIn Under the Table\, 1994\, the viewer is both in the world of imaginary giants and in the world of remembered childhood. Fusing Alice in Wonderland with the Duchampian tradition of the readymade\, Artist Robert Therrien constructs a doppelganger from an everyday object\, both displaying his visual wit and actualizing literary or imaginative fantasy in three-dimensional space. The table exudes an extraordinary aura\, compelling one to walk underneath the table and conjuring the physical memory of being under the table of one’s childhood home. Complicated and powerful\, the work offers fresh ideas of what a table\, sculpture\, and memory can mean. \n  \n  \n \nUsing the recognizable form of a balloon twisted into the shape of a dog\, Koons has frozen a moment in time\, exaggerating both scale and material. \nBalloon Dog (Blue) is literal and abstract. When standing close to it\, one’s own distorted reflection bends around smooth pert curves. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nGeneral Admission is Free\nAll visitors must reserve timed tickets in advance. SUMMARY:Suihoen - The Japanese Garden
DESCRIPTION:NOW OPEN- Van Nuys\n \n6100 Woodley Ave\, Lake Balboa\, CA 91406 \n  \nNestled amidst the bustling San Fernando Valley lies an oasis of serenity – the Japanese Garden at Van Nuys\, also known as Suihōen (水芳園)\, meaning “garden of water and fragrance.” This captivating 6.5-acre sanctuary transports you to a world of tranquility\, offering a glimpse into traditional Japanese garden design and a chance to reconnect with nature’s calming embrace. \n \nA Journey Through Three Distinct Styles\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys is a masterpiece of design\, incorporating three distinct styles of Japanese gardens. As you embark on your exploration\, prepare to be enveloped by: \n\n\nTsukiyama (mountain borrowing) style: This style cleverly borrows the scenery of the surrounding hills\, creating the illusion of a much larger space. Let your imagination wander as the boundaries between the garden and the natural landscape seem to blur. \n\n\nChisen (pond garden) style: A central pond\, symbolizing the vastness of the ocean\, takes center stage in this style. Graceful bridges connect small islands within the pond\, adding a touch of whimsy and tranquility to the scene. Keep an eye out for the vibrant koi fish that call this pond their home. \n\n\nKare-sansui (dry landscape) style: Embrace the beauty of minimalism with the Kare-sansui style. Rocks\, sand\, and gravel are meticulously arranged to represent water and mountains\, creating a space for contemplation and reflection. \n\n\n  \n \n  \n \n  \nA Haven for Relaxation and Reflection\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys is more than just a visual treat. It’s a place to unwind\, de-stress\, and reconnect with your inner peace. \n\n\nStroll the Winding Paths: Meandering paths\, crafted from natural materials\, weave through the landscape\, inviting you on a journey of discovery. Allow yourself to be present in the moment\, savoring the sights\, sounds\, and scents of the garden. \n\n\nFind Serenity by the Koi Pond: The gentle murmur of water and the graceful dance of the koi fish create a calming atmosphere. Take a seat on a nearby bench and let the tranquility wash over you. \n\n\nUnwind Amidst the Dry Landscape: The stark beauty of the Kare-sansui style fosters a sense of peace and mindfulness. Allow the raked sand and meticulously placed rocks to inspire contemplation and a connection with nature’s simplicity. \n\n\n  \n \n  \nA Cultural Gem in the City\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys isn’t just a beautiful space; it’s a cultural gem. As you explore\, you’ll encounter traditional Japanese elements like: \n\n\nTorii gate: A traditional gate that marks the entrance to the garden\, signifying a transition from the everyday world to a sacred space. \n\n\nPagoda: A multi-tiered tower\, a familiar feature in Japanese gardens\, adds an architectural touch and a sense of history. \n\n\nTea house: While not always open to the public\, the presence of a tea house hints at the cultural significance of tea ceremonies in Japanese tradition. \n\n\n \n  \n \n  \nPlan Your Tranquil Escape\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys is open to the public free of charge (donations are appreciated). The garden is open Tuesday through Sunday\, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm\, offering a convenient escape during the workweek or a peaceful weekend retreat. \nEmbrace the Tranquility\nThe Japanese Garden at Van Nuys awaits you. SUMMARY:Venice Heritage Museum
DESCRIPTION:STEP BACK IN TIME- Venice Beach\nThe Venice Heritage Museum’s mission is to preserve\, showcase\, and nurture Venice’s diverse cultural heritage and history. The Venice Heritage Museum (VHM) gives visitors the opportunity to experience the stories of one of our country’s most culturally rich and innovative communities—Venice\, a Los Angeles\, California coastal community. \nVHM is a place for discovery\, displaying Venice’s accepting and progressive legacy and highlighting both well-known and untold histories. In the face of constant change\, VHM aims to be an inclusive hub to celebrate the diverse cultures and unique facets of Venice’s culture and history. \n\n\n\n\nLiving Heritage \n\nRotating exhibitions and events showcase our in-house and community archives\, representing Venice’s creative and socio-economically diverse histories. Collecting stories as local Venice community histories evolve and grow as we  develop a hub for the future as well as the past.\n\n\n\nCultural Representation \n\nProviding a permanent platform for Venice’s diverse communities\, highlighting both well-known and untold histories.\nRepresenting historical legacies through the words\, images\, and ephemera of community members themselves.\n\n\n\nStrengthening Community\n\nImproving the lives of local community members\, other Angelenos\, and visitors by deepening and enriching their understanding of Venice.\n\n\nServing as a common ground where all attendees can meet and gather to celebrate the Venice community’s unique culture.\n\n  \n\n\n \n\n\nEmpowering Youth \n\nEducating and empowering young people to take pride in their community\, their family histories\, and the stories of cultural innovators who have lived and worked in Venice\nNurturing youth to write the next chapter of the Venice history by becoming cultural stewards and storytellers in their own right\n\n \nPublic Knowledge Production\n\nVHM is interested in the full range of the heritage of Venetians. This range includes inherited traditions of tangible and intangible culture\, as well as contemporary activities\, meanings\, and behaviors that we draw from them.\nAs part of fulfilling our mission\, VHM preserves and highlights the cultural and collective stories of Venetians. Our work is to curate and collect stories\, artifacts\, memorabilia\, and memories and through them tell the stories/histories of the Venice community. VHM is interested to preserve source materials and produce new knowledge that is accessible to the communities and institutions that seek access to them.\n\n\n\nVenice’s heritage is uniquely rich\, as so many people in Venice come from different backgrounds. Over 115+ years\, Venice has experienced cultural shifts and economic turbulence\, and yet common threads are still found within the community. It is those shared commonalities that make all of us Venetians.\nHours\nThursday – Sunday: 11:00am – 5:00pm \n  \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nhttps://www.veniceheritagemuseum.org/\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
