The museum serves as a gateway to the classical past for students\, scholars\, specialized professionals\, and general audiences. \n\nThe Getty Villa’s Architecture\n\nExplore the groundbreaking architecture of the Getty Center in this 45 minute docent-led tour of the site. \n \n \nGardens are integral to the setting of the Getty Villa\, as they were in the ancient Roman home. Open spaces around the site feature bronze sculptures\, fountains\, and lush plantings of trees\, herbs\, and flowers used by the Romans. In ancient Roman times\, the outer peristyle garden would have been used to converse with guests and for solo contemplation. \n \n\nThe Getty Villa is Closed Mondays\nAdmission to the Getty Villa is free for the whole family. Each Villa ticket allows you to bring up to three children ages 15 and under with you in one car. The Getty Villa offers special educational programs for children. SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. DESCRIPTION:TRAILS & TIDE POOLING in Palos Verdes\nAbalone Cove Shoreline Park is a coastal tide pool treasure\, located at the tip of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The park contains an ecological preserve and is famous for its outstanding tide pools. \nIt is worth checking tide charts to visit these beaches at low tide for the tide pools and the tunnels. \nDAILY TIDE CHARTS HERE\n  \n \nOut at the end and right at the base of the points there are amazing rock tunnels where waves rush in and crash through. \n  \nTrails meander on the bluff out to excellent views from two prominent points. Below these points are three separate coves with beaches and tide pools. \nAbalone Cove Park features 2 beaches (Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove)\, tide pools\, bluff top viewing areas and trails crisscrossing the area. The park contains a State Ecological Preserve and taking of protected animals and marine life is prohibited. There is direct access to a parking lot off Palos Verdes Drive South. Access to Abalone Cove Beach is by a long trail from the parking lot. To access Sacred Cove\, users must walk along Palos Verdes Drive South to 1 of 2 trails between Portuguese and Inspiration Points. Lifeguards are on duty at Abalone Cove Beach during summer hours and weekends only. The views of the ocean and Catalina Island are spectacular. Barbeques and fires are prohibited at this site. DESCRIPTION:OPEN DAILY- Manhattan Beach Pier\nThe Roundhouse Aquarium is located at the end of the Manhattan Beach Pier. The Roundhouse has undergone a recent revitalization through a $4 million capital project spearheaded by the Harrison Greenberg Foundation. The new Roundhouse Aquarium educates and inspires more than 300\,000 visitors every year. It is managed and operated by the nonprofit oceanic and environmental organization Oceanographic Teaching Stations\, Inc. (OTS)\, whose mission is to connect and engage visitors and students to the oceans through hands-on interactive experiences with marine life and habitats of southern California\, and to inspire them to become good stewards of our environment. \nOTS’ programs at the Roundhouse Aquarium promote the study of the oceans\, tidelands and beaches of Southern California through a wide slate of science-based and standards-aligned education programs with its immersive and engaging exhibits of a diverse array of marine life.  More than 100 marine animals from Southern California’s waters live at the aquarium\, many are native to its local waters in the Santa Monica Bay. Notable wildlife include moon jellies\, sharks\, octopus\, sheepshead\, moray eels\, lobsters\, and more – as well as a touch tank with sea stars\, sea cucumbers\, sea urchins and sea snails. The aquarium prides itself on being family oriented. It’s a great place for kids to take their parents! \n\n\n\n\n\nCome SEA our Marine Exhibits\nGet to know the habitats within Southern California by visiting our diverse marine exhibits. These exhibits are showcased within 4 Aquarium Galleries. \n\n\nMarine Habitat Gallery\n\nRocky Reef Tank \nThe Rocky Reef shows us what reefs in the cold California waters look like. They are similar to coral reefs but are made up of rocks instead of corals. They are just as important of a habitat as coral reefs and often serve as a nursery for many types of juvenile fish. \nKelp Forest Tank \nThe Kelp Forest tank represents a distinct southern California marine habitat. This tank shows us what it looks like to swim at the edge of the kelp forest\, where rocks become scarcer and sand more plentiful. Many of the animals in the tank can live their life deep within the kelp forest or at the very edge. Those animals at the edges can even camouflage in the sand. \n\n\n\n\nEducation Gallery\n\nDeep Kelp Forest Tank\nThese tanks represent a very diverse and abundant habitat\, the kelp forest! The giant kelp that grows 2 feet a day\, provides food and shelter for many different animals. Not only is this habitat important for animals\, but it is also important to humans as well! Seaweeds\, like kelp\, produce about 70% of our oxygen through photosynthesis. So\, take a deep breath and thank kelp! \nTide Pool Tank\nAll the animals that you can find in our touch tank live in a habitat called a tide pool. When the tide is low and the water has receded\, pools of water are left in between rocks which form the tide pools. In Southern California\, we have 2 high tides and 2 low tides every day\, which means the animals’ habitat is always changing. They must have special adaptations that allow them to live in such a dynamic habitat. \nPier Piling Tank\nHave you ever wondered what is under the pier? This tank will give you a good idea! Pier pilings\, while man made\, do create a habitat for lots of animals ranging from mussels\, to crabs\, to fish and rays. The fish can either hide amongst the mussels or lay on the sand under the pier among the rays. \n\n\n\n \n\n\nMarine Science Gallery\n\nJewel Tank\nSee our animals in the spotlight with cool adaptive traits like our spotted rose anemone that has biofluorescence and our baby swell shark eggs that can camouflage as seaweed. The baby swell sharks are really cute when they hatch out too! \nPipefish Tank\nThe Pipefish tank is an example of a mudflat with eelgrass beds that act as a nursery for young fish and young sting rays. See if you can spot a pipefish in the eelgrass. \nArtificial Reef Tank\nThe Artificial Reef tank is an examples of man-made structures left behind that now act as reefs teaming with life from sea anemones on rock scallops to sea stars to juvenile rockfish. Can you see the bright orange Garibaldi with blue spots? \nOctopus Tank\nThe octopus tank is an example of a deep water habitat brought to life for our guests to see. It features anemones and rock scallops on the reef which also add structure and microhabitats to the reef. The decorator crab uses the colonial strawberry anemones to help decorate its body to camouflage with the reef. There are small but colorful rockfish like the half-banded rockfish that stay close to the rocks and use them as shelter. \nKid’s Kelp Corner\nHave you ever wondered oh why\, oh why did my goldfish die? Come find the answer in the Kid’s Kelp Corner. You can also relax and read the many ocean related books in our library while watching our inquisitive freshwater fish. \nDiscovery Center\nCome check out what it means to be a scientist! Observe plankton\, learn about the food chain\, and discover some of the aquarium’s smallest residents. \nSeahorse Tank\nSeahorses are some of the most fragile sea creatures in the ocean\, and they can camouflage to look like seaweed\, eelgrass\, or even sea fans. They use their tails to hold onto eelgrass and stay upright\, but they won’t swim except in short bursts. Come run with us. \n48 for Change\nWith the combination of a global pandemic and civil unrest around racial injustice\, June of 2020 set the stage for important societal and human issues to finally come to light in a more permanent way. This was the same time that two friends\, Justin and Tyler\, decided they wanted to take action to make a difference in the injustices and inequality we see in our communities. \n  \n\n\n\nThe week of George Floyd’s passing\, Justin called Tyler voicing his frustration from Floyd’s murder and subsequent reactions\, and they joined forces to do a running challenge that very weekend that entailed running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. A GoFundMe was set up to collect funds from friends and family throughout the running challenge to donate to help support racial justice. \nWhat started as a way to take the mind off of the pressure cooker of injustice resulted in a massively successful and attention-grabbing fundraiser\, and eventually turned into a 501(c)3 nonprofit\, still strong and growing today: 48 For Change. \nAside from fundraising and donating\, Justin found that the community that gathered to run that weekend was something special\, and needed its own spotlight. A place where anyone can come and simply run with a group of good people. DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERY DAY- DTLA Wells Fargo Center\nGraham Garden integrates Fountain Figures I-IV\, a collection of graceful sculptures created by late Los Angeles artist Robert Graham\, in a newly designed outdoor plaza at Halo. For over fifty years\, Robert Graham’s observation of the female form and use of scale allowed him to explore and create a range of intimate sized works and large public monuments\, widely celebrated for their precise iconic detail. \nThe sculptures were originally part of CRA/LA’s mission in 1985 to incorporate public art in redevelopment projects and revitalize Downtown Los Angeles. The four sculptures are currently situated in an exterior landscaped setting that Graham’s son\, Steven Graham\, consulted on as part of the renovation at Wells Fargo Center. \n  \n \nRobert Graham\, was a Mexican born sculptor\, and although you may not be familiar with his name\, you probably ARE familiar with some of his work. Graham’s monumental bronzes commemorate the human figure\, and are featured in 11 public places in and around the city of Angels. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \n  \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \n \n  \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States.
