Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. No special clothing is required\, and participants are welcome to join for five minutes or enjoy the entire 30 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese free weekly drop-in sessions usually take place in the Hammer’s Billy Wilder Theater but are now offered live online via Zoom. \nMindful Awareness Meditation is provided by UCLA & The Hammer Museum\n  \nff \n\nSessions are led by Diana Winston and other instructors from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. Just steps outside the Museum are a resplendently restored steam locomotive and railcar. \nOpened in 1971\, The Nethercutt Collection is a not-for-profit educational institution and a resource for automobile enthusiasts\, historians\, students and scholars. It is open to the public at no charge. The Nethercutt Museum showcases more than 130 of the world’s greatest antique\, vintage\, classic and special interest automobiles including many top winners of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. \n\n\n  \n \nTHE ANTIQUE ERA (1890s – 1915)\nInnovation and experimentation were at the heart of this era and provided the catalyst for the automobiles’ development. By the late-19th century\, “horseless carriages” were being built by small groups of artisans\, craftsmen and engineers on a small scale\, with many taking characteristics from the wagons they were replacing. \n\n\nTHE VINTAGE ERA (1916 – 1924)\nA class of cars that came to be known today as “vintage\,” fits in between the expensive coach built brands that became classics and the inexpensive models represented by Ford\, Chevrolet and Dodge. These cars sold for between $500 and $2\,000. They had basic engineering features but had better cosmetic appointments such as visors\, cigar lighters and wool broadcloth interiors. \n  \n \nTHE CLASSIC ERA (1925 – 1948)\nThis era elevated the common automobile to a status symbol\, as evidenced by their cost. When common vehicles sold for $400 to about $1\,200\, the classic car had a price tag of $2\,000 to $20\,000. \n  \n\nTHE POST-WAR ERA (1945 – 1970s)\nThroughout the 1950s\, engine power and vehicle speeds rose\, designs became better integrated and more stylized\, and cars grew more popular across the world. The auto market slightly shifted in the 1960s\, causing Detroit to worry about foreign competition. European makers adopted even greater technology and Japan appeared as a serious car-producing nation. \n  \n \nTHE MUSEUM LOCOMOTIVE & PRIVATE CAR\n1937 Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson Locomotive #2839: \n#2839 was built by Montreal Locomotive Works and is resplendent in its Royal maroon\, gold leaf\, gloss black and brushed stainless steel livery\, is a testament to the grand era of steam locomotive engineering. The Hudson type is a 4-6-4 wheel arrangement and was a high-speed passenger locomotive with a top speed of 90 mph. \n1912 Pullman Private Car #100 California: \nCustom built by Pullman in Chicago\, Illinois for Clara Baldwin Stocker the eldest Daughter of local Pioneer “Lucky” Baldwin. This railcar has been beautifully restored back to 1912 \nBuilding TWO: The Nethercutt Collection: Available by Tour Only  advanced reservations are required- $10\n  \n \nLower Salon\n\nThe Lower Salon is where guests assemble to start the guided tour. The salon is a microcosm of the entire collection. There are about 25 automobiles dating from the early 1900’s up till the late 1940’s. Also in display are nickelodeons\, music boxes\, David Winter Cottages\, Dolls\, Coins\, and crystal figurines. \n  \n\n \nGrand Salon\n\nMarble columns\, crystal chandeliers\, painted ceilings all make up this beautiful Grand Salon Showroom of the 1910’s\, 20 and 30s. On display are approx. 30 of the finest automoblies of that era. Duesenbergs\, Cadillacs\, Isotta-Fraschini\, Delahaye\, Minvera\, Renault\, Maybach\, many other European and American built automoblies. \n  \n\n \nAutomobile Collectibles and Antiques\n\nOn the third floor is a large assortment of Radiator Hood Ornaments “Mascots”\, including Lalique Crystal Mascots and 18th & 19th Century French Furniture \n  \n \nInstruments\n\nThis area displays a world-class collection of automated mechanical instruments including musical repeat striking watches\, Swiss bird boxes\, cylinder and disc music boxes\, and grand pianos. Though Los Angeles is home to the nation’s fifth-largest Italian population today\, and the Italian presence in the American West predates the nation’s founding\, seldom is the city included in dialogs surrounding contemporary or historic Italian American communities. An examination of the region’s Italian roots reveals both the complexity of the Italian Diaspora and the exceptionally diverse fabric of Southern California’s history. \n \nThe Los Angeles Italian experience contrasts with that of Italian immigrants elsewhere in the country and reveals the complexity of the Italian American diaspora. Given the success that Italian Americans have achieved in the United States\, it is easy to forget that they\, like other minority groups\, faced considerable prejudice and hostility in their struggle to achieve the American Dream. In the American South\, Italians were a common target of lynchings and racially-motivated violence. In the early 20th century\, eugenicists described Italians as genetically inferior\, while political cartoons of the era depicted Italians as threats to American security and racial purity. \nTHE MISSION\nThe mission of the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles is to foster a deeper understanding of Southern California’s diverse heritage through research\, historic preservation\, exhibitions\, and educational programs that examine the history and continuing contributions of Italian Americans in multi-ethnic Los Angeles and the United States. \nThe IAMLA is a charity that depends on donations to accomplish its specific mission. This “Flight Path” is the aviation equivalent of the famed Hollywood Walk of Fame. \n \n\n  \nUnique among the fine aviation museums in Southern California is the Flight Path Museum’s location\, the only aviation museum and research center situated at a major airport and the only facility with a primary emphasis on contributions of civil aviation to the history and development of Southern California. \n\n\nThe Flight Path Museum gallery of exhibits\, filled with memories of aviation’s golden years\, is located adjacent to the LAX airfield\, where today’s aircraft and travelers arrive and depart the world’s busiest origin and destination airport. No other museum offers such a perspective on contemporary aircraft and aviation. \n\nExhibits\n\n\n\nCOMMERCIAL AVIATION HISTORY EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Flight Path museum houses an extensive collection of airline artifacts from the beginning of the commercial aviation era to present day. Experience the glamour of flight at the dawn of long-haul travel. \n  \n\n \n\n\nFLIGHT CREW UNIFORM EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlight Path has over 600 uniforms from 68 airlines from around the world covering most of commercial flight history. Several pieces were special editions to mark specific events. Several of the uniforms are on display\, while others can be viewed by request in the archive. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n \nDC-3 PLANE EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Douglas DC-3 is a propeller-driven airliner which had a lasting effect on the airline industry in the 1930s/1940s and World War II. It was developed as a larger\, improved 14-bed sleeper version of the Douglas DC-2. It is a low-wing metal monoplane with a tailwheel landing gear\, with a cruise speed of 207 mph (333 km/h)\, commercial capacity of 21 to 32 passengers or 6\,000 lbs (2\,700 kg) of cargo\, a range of 1\,500 mi (2\,400 km)\, and could operate from short runways.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Aircraft was displayed for many years at the California Science Center in Exposition Park in Los Angeles. It has been on loan to the Flight Path Museum LAX since September 2006. \n  \n\n\n\n\nSPACE EXPLORATION EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAstronaut Flight Suit\nSpace Debris\nModel Rockets\nTribute to 50 years since the Apollo Program\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlight Path hosts the Space Exploration Gallery that spotlights the history and development of space flight. The gallery showcases a colorful and informative timeline of space exploration history together with a number of important space artifacts. Included is the flight suit of astronaut Gen. Kevin P. Chilton\, commander of the Endeavour and Atlantis space shuttles. \nThere is an extension to the exhibit in the entrance courtyard where a piece from a spacecraft that has re-entered the atmosphere can be observed. \n\n\n\n\n\nFLYING TIGERS EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlying Tiger Line\, also known as Flying Tigers\, was the first scheduled cargo airline in the United States and a major military charter operator during the Cold War era for both cargo and personnel. The airline was bought by Federal Express in 1988.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe airline was named after the Flying Tigers fighter unit of World War II\, officially the 1st American Volunteer Group. Ten former AVG pilots formed the Flying Tiger Line (established as National Skyway Freight) after returning to the United States in 1945\, using a small fleet of Budd Company C-93 Conestoga freighters purchased as war surplus from the United States Navy. The pilots and two ground crew provided half of the initial investment\, with the balance coming from California oil tycoon Samuel B. Mosher. For the next four years\, Flying Tiger Line carried air freight on contract throughout the U.S. and\, as the airline expanded\, carrying supplies to U.S. troops under Gen. Douglas MacArthur during the occupation of Japan. \n  \n\n\n\n\nFIRE FIGHTING VEHICLE EXHIBIT\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn permanent display on the airside of the museum is a retied ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting)  truck used at LAX. The Oshkosh M3000 model was manufactured by Oshkosh Corporation in Appleton\, Wisconsin and entered service at LAX in 1995\, it stayed in operation for about a decade and a half. Maximum operating load is 148\,000lbs\, 3\,000 gallons of water and 500 gallons of foam. Made to reach potential accidents sites at top speed\, it reached speeds of 50mph in a sprint.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nToday\, ARFF operations at LAX are conducted out of one station near the center of the airport\, Station 80 is a part of the Los Angeles Fire Department. They currently operate six Panther trucks manufactured by Rosenbauer America.
