In Buddhist and Hindu teachings\, the Graveyard\, or Charnal grounds\, is a favored place of practice where yogis must confront our mortal destiny\, our fear of death\, and our aversion to impermanence. \n  \n \nIn the Summer of 2020\, as our favorite indoor Yoga studios were forced to close and we found ourselves less compliant in ZOOM classes\, a few of us started coming to Hollywood Forever to practice safely together in the mornings. \nWe are now honored to offer this experience to all yogis\, from beginners to advanced\, looking to deepen their practice in a safe outdoor setting with green grass and quacking ducks. \nWe practice on the Hollywood Forever Cemetery Fairbanks Lawn\, where Cinespia movies are screened\, so there is ample space to spread out and safely distance as you enrich your practice with our sangha community. \n \nAttendance Tips:Cost: Donation based \nParking: FREE! Park anywhere alongside the lawn. Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. No special clothing is required\, and participants are welcome to join for five minutes or enjoy the entire 30 minutes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese free weekly drop-in sessions usually take place in the Hammer’s Billy Wilder Theater but are now offered live online via Zoom. \nMindful Awareness Meditation is provided by UCLA & The Hammer Museum\n  \nff \n\nSessions are led by Diana Winston and other instructors from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. Today\, the Italian Hall is the oldest remaining structure from Los Angeles’ Italian enclave and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \n \nTHE HISTORY\nItalians and Italian Americans have played an instrumental role in the development of Los Angeles as one of the world’s greatest metropolises\, yet the history of Italians in the region is largely unknown. Though Los Angeles is home to the nation’s fifth-largest Italian population today\, and the Italian presence in the American West predates the nation’s founding\, seldom is the city included in dialogs surrounding contemporary or historic Italian American communities. An examination of the region’s Italian roots reveals both the complexity of the Italian Diaspora and the exceptionally diverse fabric of Southern California’s history. \n \nThe Los Angeles Italian experience contrasts with that of Italian immigrants elsewhere in the country and reveals the complexity of the Italian American diaspora. Given the success that Italian Americans have achieved in the United States\, it is easy to forget that they\, like other minority groups\, faced considerable prejudice and hostility in their struggle to achieve the American Dream. In the American South\, Italians were a common target of lynchings and racially-motivated violence. In the early 20th century\, eugenicists described Italians as genetically inferior\, while political cartoons of the era depicted Italians as threats to American security and racial purity. \nTHE MISSION\nThe mission of the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles is to foster a deeper understanding of Southern California’s diverse heritage through research\, historic preservation\, exhibitions\, and educational programs that examine the history and continuing contributions of Italian Americans in multi-ethnic Los Angeles and the United States. \nThe IAMLA is a charity that depends on donations to accomplish its specific mission. Come run with us. \n48 for Change\nWith the combination of a global pandemic and civil unrest around racial injustice\, June of 2020 set the stage for important societal and human issues to finally come to light in a more permanent way. This was the same time that two friends\, Justin and Tyler\, decided they wanted to take action to make a difference in the injustices and inequality we see in our communities. \n\n\n\nThe week of George Floyd’s passing\, Justin called Tyler voicing his frustration from Floyd’s murder and subsequent reactions\, and they joined forces to do a running challenge that very weekend that entailed running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours. A GoFundMe was set up to collect funds from friends and family throughout the running challenge to donate to help support racial justice. \nWhat started as a way to take the mind off of the pressure cooker of injustice resulted in a massively successful and attention-grabbing fundraiser\, and eventually turned into a 501(c)3 nonprofit\, still strong and growing today: 48 For Change. \nAside from fundraising and donating\, Justin found that the community that gathered to run that weekend was something special\, and needed its own spotlight. A place where anyone can come and simply run with a group of good people. DESCRIPTION:3 WEEK CHROMEBOOK & HOTSPOT LOANS- Los Angeles County Libraries\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorrow a Chromebook and Wi-Fi hotspot to access the internet.\n\n\nYou can now checkout a Google Chromebook and Wireless Hotspot for 3 weeks\, from any Los Angeles County Library Sidewalk Service FREE! Do you know anyone without internet or a computer at home who would benefit from borrowing them—to apply for jobs\, access homeschooling resources\, or simply stay connected to information? \nYou can now check out a kit with a Chromebook and wireless hotspot to access the internet (plus chargers) inside a handy carrying case\, from any Sidewalk Service location. \nPlease call any Sidewalk Service location to place a hold on a Laptop & Hotspot Loan Kit. Borrow for 3 weeks\, with the option to renew\, if available. \nPlease note: Laptop & Hotspot Loan Kits require a full access card to check out. Who can check out a Chromebook kit?\nAdults with a standard adult library card in good standing will be able to check out a Chromebook kit at a participating library.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2. How do I check out a Chromebook kit?\nRequests for Chromebook kits can be made using our online catalog or over the phone\, like any of our other materials. At this time requests are site-specific and can only be placed at libraries offering the service (listed above). Call a library offering the service to arrange a same-day checkout\, if kits are available.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3. When can I pick up my Laptop & Hotspot?\nCall the owning library and arrange to pick up your kit during Sidewalk Service hours.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4. How long can I keep the Laptop & Hotspot Loan? Can I renew?\nThe kits can be borrowed for 3 weeks. If no other customers are on the waiting list\, the checkout can be renewed up to 3 times. The renewal needs to be made before your checkout period ends.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n5. How do I return the Chromebook Kit?\nChromebooks must be returned in person to the owning library during Sidewalk Service hours. They cannot be returned in the bookdrop. They cannot be returned to any library other than the one where the kit was checked out. Please call the owning library to arrange a drop-off time and call again once at the library to alert staff. Staff will bring out a box labeled Laptop Return to the Sidewalk Service table. You’ll be instructed to remove all items – the Chromebook\, the wireless hotspot\, and both charging cables – from the carrying case. Put the case into the box first\, on the bottom\, and then put all other items in on top. Staff will check the box to make sure all items are inside and that they look fine. All items will be quarantined for 4 days and confirmed to be working properly before being checked in. Staff will contact you if there are any questions or concerns. Please remember that the loan will still show on your account until the quarantine and check-in process is complete.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n6. Are there late fees?\nLate fees will be assessed the same as all other library materials. The Chromebook will become disabled once the loan period has ended.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n7. Will I be charged if the Chromebook is damaged while in my possession? How much?\nYes\, fees will depend on the type of damage.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n8. Will my documents stay on the Chromebook after I return it?\nAll documents are deleted once the Chromebook is shut down. This will happen even during your 3-week checkout period\, so we advise you to back up your documents on a flash drive or in Google Docs if you are working on something you want to keep.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9. What programs will be included on the Chromebook?\n\n\nAdobe Acrobat Reader\nDocuSign\nGoogle Calendar\nGoogle Drive/Docs\nSkype\nWordPress\nInternet\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10. Does the Chromebook include the internet?\nA wireless hotspot device is included when you check out the Chromebook. This will give you access to the internet.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11. I don’t have a printer. Can I print things through the library?\nYes\, you can use our Wi-Fi printing service on the borrowed Chromebook and send your documents wirelessly to any library that offers Sidewalk Service.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12. Will library staff provide an orientation on the technology when I check it out?\nA basic instruction sheet will be provided explaining how to turn on and connect the equipment. If you have further questions\, please call your local library.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n13. I am not good with computers. Will Library staff help me use the Chromebook or answer technical questions?\nLibrary staff is able to provide basic help with your computer—like how to turn it on\, connect the wireless hotspot\, or how to locate programs. For help\, please call your local library.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReceive immediate\, unlimited\, and free access to LA County Library’s online resources\,\nincluding eBooks and audiobooks\, movie and TV streaming\, and music downloads. Your Digital Library Card also gives you the ability to place holds and check out 3 physical items from the library at a time. Digital Cards cannot check out a Laptop & Hotspot Loan kit. You may call any Sidewalk Service location and schedule an appointment to get a full access card\, or upgrade an existing Digital Library Card. The Digital Library Card is available to residents of Los Angeles County\, ages 18 and over. If you already have a regular full-access library card\, you do not need to sign up for a Digital Library Card. The daily mindful reflection period was shared widely within MIT and across the globe to become a daily staple for participants and viewers ranging in age from their teens to their 70s and from all walks of life. Monday 16 Nov marks the 250th consecutive day that the group meets at 2:50 pm eastern time. Each day\, participants and viewers begin to show up around 2:45. Returning participants greet each other and welcome new joiners. At 2:49 guests are invited to participate in a way that suits them best from a handful of suggested mindfulness practices. From 2:50 to 3:00 pm every day\, everyone sits quietly together. Quiet music\, nature scenes\, and participant panels play on the screen for those who wish to watch.
