SUMMARY:Borrow A Chromebook & Hotspot @ LA County Libraries
DESCRIPTION:3 WEEK CHROMEBOOK & HOTSPOT LOANS- Los Angeles County Libraries\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorrow a Chromebook and Wi-Fi hotspot to access the internet.\n\n\nYou can now checkout a Google Chromebook and Wireless Hotspot for 3 weeks\, from any Los Angeles County Library Sidewalk Service FREE! Do you know anyone without internet or a computer at home who would benefit from borrowing them—to apply for jobs\, access homeschooling resources\, or simply stay connected to information? \nYou can now check out a kit with a Chromebook and wireless hotspot to access the internet (plus chargers) inside a handy carrying case\, from any Sidewalk Service location. \nPlease call any Sidewalk Service location to place a hold on a Laptop & Hotspot Loan Kit. Borrow for 3 weeks\, with the option to renew\, if available. \nPlease note: Laptop & Hotspot Loan Kits require a full access card to check out. Call your nearest Sidewalk Service location for details about signing up or upgrading your digital card. \nFunding for this project has been provided by the Coronavirus Aid\, Relief\, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrequently Asked Questions\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1. Who can check out a Chromebook kit?\nAdults with a standard adult library card in good standing will be able to check out a Chromebook kit at a participating library.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2. How do I check out a Chromebook kit?\nRequests for Chromebook kits can be made using our online catalog or over the phone\, like any of our other materials. At this time requests are site-specific and can only be placed at libraries offering the service (listed above). Call a library offering the service to arrange a same-day checkout\, if kits are available.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n3. When can I pick up my Laptop & Hotspot?\nCall the owning library and arrange to pick up your kit during Sidewalk Service hours.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4. How long can I keep the Laptop & Hotspot Loan? Can I renew?\nThe kits can be borrowed for 3 weeks. If no other customers are on the waiting list\, the checkout can be renewed up to 3 times. The renewal needs to be made before your checkout period ends.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n5. How do I return the Chromebook Kit?\nChromebooks must be returned in person to the owning library during Sidewalk Service hours. They cannot be returned in the bookdrop. They cannot be returned to any library other than the one where the kit was checked out. Please call the owning library to arrange a drop-off time and call again once at the library to alert staff. Staff will bring out a box labeled Laptop Return to the Sidewalk Service table. You’ll be instructed to remove all items – the Chromebook\, the wireless hotspot\, and both charging cables – from the carrying case. Put the case into the box first\, on the bottom\, and then put all other items in on top. Staff will check the box to make sure all items are inside and that they look fine. All items will be quarantined for 4 days and confirmed to be working properly before being checked in. Staff will contact you if there are any questions or concerns. Please remember that the loan will still show on your account until the quarantine and check-in process is complete.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n6. Are there late fees?\nLate fees will be assessed the same as all other library materials. The Chromebook will become disabled once the loan period has ended.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n7. Will I be charged if the Chromebook is damaged while in my possession? How much?\nYes\, fees will depend on the type of damage.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n8. Will my documents stay on the Chromebook after I return it?\nAll documents are deleted once the Chromebook is shut down. This will happen even during your 3-week checkout period\, so we advise you to back up your documents on a flash drive or in Google Docs if you are working on something you want to keep.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9. What programs will be included on the Chromebook?\n\n\nAdobe Acrobat Reader\nDocuSign\nGoogle Calendar\nGoogle Drive/Docs\nSkype\nWordPress\nInternet\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10. SUMMARY:LEGO BUILDERS AT THE INGLEWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY
DESCRIPTION:EVERY MONDAY – INGLEWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY\nDesign. Construct. Create. The best way to foster your child’s creativity is by providing them with the tools to build their own world and let their imagination soar. Join us at Inglewood Public Library – Children’s Services\, every Monday from 4 pm – 5 pm. The Lego Bricks is specially designed for children to build\, learn and create exciting play experiences. This will help develop your child’s imagination and love of building! \n\n\nTHE LEGO BRAND VALUES\nImagination\nFree play is how children develop their imagination – the foundation for creativity. Curiosity asks WHY and imagines possible explanations. Playfulness asks WHAT IF and imagines how the ordinary becomes extraordinary fantasy or fiction. Dreaming is the first step toward doing it.\n\nCreativity\nCreativity is the ability to come up with ideas that are new\, surprising\, and valuable – and it’s an essential 21st-century skill. Systematic creativity is a particular form of creativity that combines logic and reasoning with playfulness and imagination.\n\n\nFun\nFun is being active together\, the thrill of an adventure\, the joyful enthusiasm of children\, and the delight in surprising both yourself and others in what you can do or create. Fun is the happiness we experience when we are fully engaged in something that requires mastery when our abilities are in balance with the challenge at hand and we are making progress towards a goal.\n\nLearning\nLearning is about being curious\, experimenting\, and collaborating – expanding our thinking and doing\, helping us develop new insights and new skills. We learn through play by putting things together\, taking them apart\, and putting them together in different ways. Building\, un-building\, rebuilding\, thereby creating new things and developing new ways of thinking about ourselves\, and the world.\n\nCaring\nCaring is about our desire to make a positive difference in the lives of children\, our colleagues\, our partners\, and the world we live in. Doing that little extra\, not because we have to – but because it feels right and because we care.\n\nQuality\nFor us\, quality means the challenge of continuous improvement to provide the best play material\, the best for children and their development\, and the best to our community and partners. From a reputation for manufacturing excellence to becoming trusted by all – we believe in quality that speaks for itself and earns us the recommendation of all.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT INGLEWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY \nLIBRARY MISSION\nThe mission of the Inglewood Public Library is to provide access to informational\, educational\, and recreational services and resources responsive to the library’s diverse communities. \nMAIN LIBRARY\n \n\n101 W. For teens ages 13–19 years old. Masks are required. \nHey Teens\, Get Your Game On!\n\n\nStop by the Main Library to play Nintendo Switch\, PS4 & also take turns playing virtual reality OCULUS!\n\n\n\n6 Cognitive Benefits of VR For Kids\n\nResearch indicates that kids who play VR games that focus on training the brain have better fine motor skills and balance. In fact\, they tend to have better mobility overall.\nVR gaming improves spatial attention in children and gives them the ability to quickly locate a target in a field of distractors\, which has proven to be a good predictor of driving ability.\nPlaying VR games\, which often resemble actual real-world experiences\, helps children translate the skills they learned in these educational VR environments to the real world.\nAccording to recent research\, children that play shooting games have increased vision capabilities. Scientists have found that the fast-paced games increase adrenaline and dopamine in the brain which helps maintain and improve brain health.\nVR gaming increases mental flexibility and improves a child’s ability to quickly switch seamlessly between tasks with conflicting demands.\nVR games are a great way to reduce stress and depression in children. Immersing in a VR game can result in short and long-term mood boost that helps them relax and unwind\, decreasing the levels of stress a person may be experiencing.\n\n  \n \n\nCome to The Inglewood Public Library and “check out” their new selection of video games\, for Playstation 4\, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One\, that you can borrow\, just like you would borrow a book? \n \nDid you finish your homework? We are committed to removing any barriers that we might find standing between the members of our community and their connection to science and nature. \n\n\nNatural History Museum occupies a special place in Expo Park: It’s one of L.A.’s oldest cultural institutions\, and today\, it’s the anchor of an emerging cultural\, educational\, and entertainment hub in Exposition Park. We show off extraordinary specimens in exhibitions such as Age of Mammals\, the Dinosaur Hall\, the Gem and Mineral Hall\, and our beloved dioramas. But in addition to sharing the yesteryear of the planet\, we also explore the transformation around us right now: Becoming Los Angeles\, the outdoor Nature Gardens\, and the Nature Lab look at the relationship between environment and people\, past and present\, in L.A.  In all of these experiences at the museum\, whether they’re inside or outside\, we’re interested in the intersection of nature and culture—in L.A. and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n  \nNHM Activities and Programs \nEnhance your visit with daily offerings including Gallery Exploration Tours\, or discover a new special event. \nMUSEUM HOURS:\nHours\nWednesday – Sunday: 9:30 am–5 pm \n\n\nThe Natural History Museum offers several way to enjoy the museum for FREE! \nMuseum Free Days\, Admission\, and Hours\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are a lot of ways to see the museum for free. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFree First Tuesdays\nGet free museum admission the first Tuesday of every month (except July and August) and free museum admission every Tuesday in September. SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. For highlights of the Meteorite Gallery please click here. \n  \n  \n \n  \nWe are eager to add meteorites to the UCLA collection. If you have a meteorite collection and are interested in considering a donation\, we would like to hear from you. You can contact us here. \n \nLOCATION\nThe Meteorite Gallery is located in room 3697 of the Geology Building on the UCLA campus. \n595 Charles E. SUMMARY:Los Angeles Maritime Museum
DESCRIPTION:WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY – San Pedro\nDiscover the history of the Port of Los Angeles on land or at sea! Welcome to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum where our hardworking harbor tug ANGELS GATE provides educational tours while our historic museum building houses fascinating exhibits\, a research library\, a ham radio station\, and a gift shop. \nOPEN EVERY WEDNESDAY TO SUNDAY FROM 12:00 pm TO 5:00 pm\nFREE TO CHILDREN AGES 12 AND UNDER\n\n\n\nBerth 84\, Foot of 6th St.\, San Pedro\, CA 90731 \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum is housed in the former Municipal Ferry Terminal building\, located on the main channel of the Los Angeles Harbor. It was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by architect Derwood Lydell Irvin of the Los Angeles Harbor Department. It was built in 1941 at Berth 84\, by the Works Project Administration (WPA). \nThe ferry between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. The building was then used for offices of the LA Harbor Department. The San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum opened in 1979 as a result of widespread community efforts to save the historic building. It is the largest maritime museum on the West Coast. The museum’s interior renovation was designed by Modernist architect James Pulliam. The museum is operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. \n\nEXHIBITS\nANGELS GATE TUGBOAT\n \nThe tugboat ANGELS GATE arrived at the Museum in 1992\, after almost 50 years of providing general towing services and goodwill tours for the Port of Los Angeles. \nTĀMINARU\n \nIn the early 20th century\, Terminal Island (in the Port of Los Angeles) was home to approximately 3\,000 Japanese-Americans who earned their livelihood from catching and cleaning fish. Residents of this community\, known as “Terminal Islanders” were originally from the Wakayama Prefecture\, Japan\, and retained their language and customs after emigrating to Los Angeles harbor. \nTāminaru is a look back at this lost community. The exhibit is guest curated by author Naomi Hirahara\, organized by Tara Fansler\, and sponsored by the Friends of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum and the Japan Business Association with the assistance of the Terminal Islanders Club. \nPOSEIDON MODEL\n \nThere is a movie star on the second floor! The model of the SS POSEIDON was the original prop in the 1972 classic film “The Poseidon Adventure”. \nFifteen men built the model over a period of three months. POSEIDON is 21 .5 feet long and weighs one ton. The builders relied on the plans of the RMS QUEEN MARY\, now permanently docked as an attraction in Long Beach\, California. \nNAVY HALL\n \nThe Museum building\, built-in 1941\, was originally used as a ferry terminal\, transporting people and automobiles between San Pedro and Terminal Island. The area of the first floor where cars would enter and exit is now used as the Navy Hall. \nANGELS GATE LIGHT\n \nThe Angels Gate Lighthouse (officially known as Los Angeles Harbor Light) has marked the entrance of Los Angeles Harbor through times of war and peace\, and even survived a tidal wave! The tower itself has undergone many changes through the years. The distinctive green flash of the Angels Gate Lighthouse remains a welcoming beacon to professional mariners and recreational boaters alike. \nKIDS EXHIBIT\n \nKids of all ages will discover what’s going on in the harbor today through a series of interactive games and activities in the children’s exhibit. Grab a pair of binoculars and take a close-up look at the nation’s busiest container port! Learn how cranes work\, imagine yourself in a variety of harbor professions\, build your own wharves\, test your knowledge of ships and cargo\, or just settle down and enjoy a nautical story!\nDue to Covid-19-related precautions\, the toys and costumes have been temporarily removed. \nCAUGHT\, CANNED\, AND EATEN\n \nThe Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro) was the fishing capital of the nation for much of the twentieth century. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna\, sardines\, mackerel\, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. \nToday\, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed\, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries endures. \nCOMMERCIAL DIVING\n \n  \nThis exhibit is an introduction to just a few of the thousands of jobs performed by commercial divers and fishery divers in the South Bay\, and was the inspiration of the late Torrance R. Parker\, noted commercial diver and author of 20\,000 Jobs Under the Sea. \nSCHOOL TOURS\nThe museum is pleased to offer educational tours throughout the year at no charge. \nThe museum is located on the Main Channel of Los Angeles Harbor. Students will have a front-row opportunity to see the massive container ships in action and learn about international trade\, ship terminology\, sailor’s art\, and the history of the working people who built Los Angeles harbor into the nation’s busiest container port. \nTours are free for grades K-12\, Wednesday –Friday mornings\, and reservations are REQUIRED. The museum is unable to accommodate group tours without a reservation. \nCall the tour hotline at 310-548-2900 and schedule your tour today\, or email info@lamaritimemuseum.org. \nRESEARCH\nThe Los Angeles Maritime Museum Research Library is home to thousands of books\, historic photographs and archival documents waiting for you to discover! \nResearch questions can be directed to info@lamaritimemuseum.org and 310-548-7618 ext. 215. \nPortions of our collection have online finding aids and digital records: \nOnline Archive of California (OAC) \nOnline Digital Collections \n\nSuggested Donation:\nAdults $5\nSeniors (62+) $3\nChildren 12 & under FREE\nHours\nMonday-Tuesday: Closed\nWednesday – Sunday: 12:00pm – 5:00pm \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.lamaritimemuseum.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:EVERY WEDNESDAY- Inglewood Public Library\nThe Inglewood Public Library presents Teen Gaming every Wednesday at the Main Library’s Teen Alcove\, from 3:00-4:00pm.
