SUMMARY:LITTLE FREE LIBRARY
DESCRIPTION:FREE BOOK EXCHANGE BOXES Various Location around LA\nThrough Little Free Library book exchanges\, millions of books are exchanged each year\, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds. \n  \n \n  \n  \nWhy Does Book Access Matter?\nAcademically\, children growing up in homes without books are on average three years behind children in homes with lots of books\, even when controlled for other key factors. One of the most successful ways to improve the reading achievement of children is to increase their access to books\, especially at home. But two out of three children living in poverty have no books to call their own. \n  \n \nBook-sharing boxes play an essential role by providing 24/7 access to books (and encouraging a love of reading!) in areas where books are scarce. \nAt the Little Free Library nonprofit\, we’re working to fill book deserts and place libraries where they can make a big impact through our Impact Library Program. We’ve donated more than 1\,000 libraries through this program to-date. \n  \n \n  \nThe Los Angeles area is already home to almost 75 such libraries; use the Little Free Library map to find exact addresses for boxes in Hollywood\, Culver City\, Westchester\, Marina Del Rey\, Burbank\, and beyond. More locations will certainly be springing up soon. \n  \n \n  \nOur staff is dedicated to increasing book access and forging community connections.  Watch the adjacent video to get a 30-second introduction to learn how you can start one\, too! \n  \n \n  \n  \nWe provide ongoing support to Little Free Library volunteer stewards\, offering free library-building instructions\, an online store with pre-built library models and kits\, access to free or discounted books\, and an e-newsletter full of ideas and advice. Our Action Book Club\, which combines reading with community service\, is open to all. \n  \n  \n \n  \nWe also maintain a world map of registered Little Free Library boxes to help people find and share books wherever they are\, and we have donated more than 1\,000 Little Free Library book exchanges (and counting!) to communities where books are scarce through our Impact Library Program. \n  \n  \n \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nlittlefreelibrary.org\n \n  \nFind more \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:MLK/FBI: A Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY – Eileen Norris Cinema Theater\nJoin the MLK/FBI: A Screening and Conversation with Sam Pollard. The 42nd Annual USC Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. this January 17\, 2023\, at the Eileen Norris Cinema Theater! \nIn celebration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, we are excited to present a special screening of the illuminating documentary MLK/FBI\, followed by a conversation with Sam Pollard\, its Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated director who was deemed one of “cinema’s most dedicated chroniclers of the Black experience in America” by Film at Lincon Center in 2021. \nPre-event reception from 6 pm to 7 pm in Queens Courtyard\nReleased in 2020\, MLK/FBI is the first film to uncover the extent of the FBI’s surveillance and harassment of the civil rights leader. Based on newly discovered and declassified files\, utilizing a trove of documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act and unsealed by the National Archives\, as well as revelatory restored footage\, the documentary explores the government’s history of targeting Black activists and the contested meaning behind some of America’s most cherished ideals. Featuring interviews with key cultural figures including former FBI director James Comey\, MLK/FBI tells this astonishing and tragic story with searing relevance to our current moment. \nThe event will be introduced by USC President Carol L. Folt. Following the screening\, USC Annenberg professor and award-winning journalist Miki Turner will join Sam Pollard for a conversation about making the film\, its impact\, and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. \n \nPresented by USC Visions and Voices: The Arts and Humanities Initiative the USC School of Cinematic Arts. the USC Black Staff & Faculty Caucus\, and the Center for Black Cultural and Student Affairs. \nPhoto (Sam Pollard): Simbarashe Cha \n\nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nwww.eventbrite.com/e/mlkfbi-a-screening-conversation\n \n  \nFind more
