We exchanged numbers and she actually called me.\nThis never happened to me in 33 years of going to clubs (yes I did go clubbing and drinking at the age of 14 when I lived in Germany…don’t know how I’m still alive and work for one of the most exciting and innovative companies on the planet lol.)\nSo yeah… go there. The company which created the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch mounted the 156-foot-tall (47-meter) gigantic space machine on vertical display for its significant milestone and as a testament to the perseverance of its founder\, and chief engineer Elon Musk\, who wants to reduce the cost of colonizing Mars by developing a fleet of fully reusable spaceships. \n  \n \nThe rocket on display is the first SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket to land successfully after years of research and experiment\, during which the company switched from its initial plan to retrieve rockets with parachutes to a very thoughtful idea of involving multiple engine restarts\, landing legs\, and precision landing algorithms. \nSpaceX  Falcon 9 rocket successfully stage landed at Cape Canaveral after a Dec. 21 launch with 11 Orbcomm communications satellites on vertical display. The rocket is a jaw-dropping out-of-space scientific attraction visible to passersby on nearby streets and freeways. The rocket is located near the southeast corner of SpaceX headquarters at the intersection of Crenshaw Blvd. and Jack Northrop Ave. in Hawthorne\, California\, a suburb of Los Angeles. \n  \n \nThe historic masterpiece had to undergo thorough scrubbing and treatment to wash away soot residue it gathered from flying through its own exhaust\, before it was brought to Hawthorne for permanent exhibition in front of SpaceX’s main building with the help of two heavy-lifting cranes. \nSpaceX Falcon 9 rocket boosters that were recovered since its first mission are being put to use again and again as SpaceX has now flown a previously flown first stage on a satellite launch. DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year.  \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure.  \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. Focus is placed on aiding teens in setting meaningful goals to accomplish individually and collaboratively through peer-to-peer leadership\, art\, special gatherings\, and park engagement. \nOur SPOT has been a safe haven for teens after school – providing a place to make friends\, participate in fun activities and learn self-esteem. While Los Angeles County shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020\, so did many of the after school and youth serving organizations in Los Angeles County. However\, Our SPOT stayed connected with teens through virtual programming available live on mobile devices and smartphones. Paul Getty Museum’s collection.This collection antiquities includes over 1\,200 works are on view in 23 galleries devoted to the permanent collection along with five additional galleries for changing exhibitions.  There are objects dating from 6\,500 B.C. to A.D. 400. \nThe Getty Villa offers an incomparable setting for the study and enjoyment of the arts. The Villa weaves together art\, performances\, family activities\, lectures\, theater\, scholarship\, conservation. There are other activities to create an integrated educational and cultural experience for all ages. The museum serves as a gateway to the classical past for students\, scholars\, specialized professionals\, and general audiences. \n\nThe Getty Villa’s Architecture\n\nExplore the groundbreaking architecture of the Getty Center in this 45 minute docent-led tour of the site. \n \n \nGardens are integral to the setting of the Getty Villa\, as they were in the ancient Roman home. Open spaces around the site feature bronze sculptures\, fountains\, and lush plantings of trees\, herbs\, and flowers used by the Romans. In ancient Roman times\, the outer peristyle garden would have been used to converse with guests and for solo contemplation. \n \n\nThe Getty Villa is Closed Mondays\nAdmission to the Getty Villa is free for the whole family. Each Villa ticket allows you to bring up to three children ages 15 and under with you in one car. The Getty Villa offers special educational programs for children. A special Family Forum gallery offers activities\, including decorating Greek vases and projecting shadows onto a screen that represents a Greek urn. The gallery has polystyrene props from Greek and Roman culture for children to handle and use to cast shadows. SUMMARY:UCLA Meteorite Collection
DESCRIPTION:FREE WEEKDAYS- UCLA Westwood Village\nThe UCLA Collection of Meteorites is the largest on the West Coast and contains over 2500 samples from about 1500 different meteorites. It is the fifth largest collection of meteorites in the United States and the second largest housed at a university. \n  \n \nOur collection includes the main masses of about 40 meteorites and the type specimens of more than 300 meteorites collected from hot deserts; 60 of these are iron meteorites. Eighty of these meteorite type specimens are from the state of California. These were collected by local citizens during the past few decades\, mainly from the playas (dry lakes) scattered around the Mojave Desert. \n  \n \nSome of our meteorites are large and well suited for exhibits (in fact\, some of them are exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History). However\, most of the samples are small and mainly of value for research. \n  \n  \n \nThe study of meteorites and the processes that formed them is called cosmochemistry. The cosmochemists at UCLA are among the most productive university researchers in the world. It is thus appropriate that we have one of the best university meteorite collections. \n  \nWe are in the second year of operating a Meteorite Gallery\, located in room 3697 of the Geology Building. Opened in January 2014\, the Gallery is open to the public weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. CLOSED WEEKENDS. Admission is always free. The current exhibits will gradually expand as funds and additional samples are obtained. Contact 310 376-9833 \n\n \n30 Pier Avenue\, Hermosa Beach\, CA 90254 \n \nA restaurant called “Verpilate’s” was built a short walk from the ocean at 30 Pier Avenue in 1934\, and it was converted into “The Lighthouse”\, a bar\, in 1940 (“Café” was added to the official name only when the business was sold in 1981). The club first began showcasing jazz music on May 29\, 1949\, when owner John Levine permitted bassist/band leader Howard Rumsey to start a recurring Sunday jam session on a trial basis. The experiment was a success. Rumsey became club manager soon after and put together a house band called the Lighthouse All-Stars. \nWhile the club also hosted visiting groups\, the Lighthouse All-Stars became a noted ensemble in its own right\, which had among its guest musicians Chet Baker\, Gerry Mulligan\, and Miles Davis. The longest-running members of the Lighthouse All-Stars were Bob Cooper (tenor saxophone)\, Conte Candoli (trumpet)\, and Stan Levey (drums). \n \nWest Coast jazz stalwarts Shorty Rogers\, Richie Kamuca\, Bill Holman\, Bud Shank\, Shelly Manne\, and Jimmy Giuffre were also regulars in the early days. Max Roach was the regular drummer for a while in 1953. The club also became an important venue for recordings; Art Pepper\, Lee Morgan\, Cannonball Adderley\, Mose Allison\, Ramsey Lewis\, Art Blakey\, Charles Earland\, Grant Green\, Elvin Jones\, Cal Tjader\, the Modern Jazz Quartet\, The Three Sounds\, the Jazz Crusaders\, and Joe Henderson all made recordings there. \n \n“The Lighthouse” sponsored an inter-collegiate jazz festival in the late-1950s\, and the competition’s winners included Mike Melvoin and Les McCann. \nJohn Levine died in 1970 and Rumsey left “The Lighthouse” in 1971 to open the “Concerts By The Sea” jazz club in nearby Redondo Beach. CIGARETTE STORE ACROSS THE STREET! \n\n \n3100 Los Feliz Blvd\, Los Angeles\, CA 90039 \n  \n \nThe Roost has changed hands many times\, and attempts to peg down an actual opening date have been unsuccessful\, but the bar once had a wigwam on its roof and was called\, fittingly\, the Wigwam. This was likely in the 1950s or ‘60s\, according to one bartender. It was also formerly known as Donna’s Red Carpet and Robin’s Roost. The notoriously heartbroken late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith used to frequent the bar\, which makes sense because to this day after a given hour (around 10 p.m.) the craggy\, old regulars are replaced with a consciously disheveled crowd of musicians and artists. \n \nPlaces like the Roost are quickly becoming extinct in Los Angeles. The counterculture lifestyle as defined by the modern hipster is morphing into the mainstream\, as is its habit of appropriating places\, fashions and art once considered marginal by the masses. One day someone will buy the Roost and turn it into a fancy simulacrum of itself and you’ll be sad that you didn’t know it back when. \n \nMixed drinks are strong and cheap here\, and something in the air at the Roost (maybe the smell of popcorn mixed with a legacy of stale smoke) makes a simple gin and tonic or vodka soda taste like the stuff of gods. Don’t be afraid to order from the well.
