Centuries later\, it is this union of fugitive and shaman blood that runs through Daniel’s veins\, injecting a much needed outlaw spirit into western yoga. \n \nHaving earned his teaching certification through his studies and apprenticeship with ashtanga vinyasa masters in Mysore\, India\, Daniel has been bringing donation-based vinyasa yoga to the people since 2005. The first African American museum of art\, history\, and culture fully supported by a state\, CAAM was the direct result of a sustained\, multiyear campaign of activism undertaken by visionary founders and community members. Its creation was an early and tangible recognition by the State of California of the critically important role African Americans have played in the American West’s cultural\, economic\, and political development. \n \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 5\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. The Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \n \nVISIT\nThe California African American Museum is located in the heart of Los Angeles\, just steps away from USC\, the California Science Center\, and the Natural History Museum. Fallah (b. 1979\, Tehran\, Iran; lives and works in Los Angeles). More than 25 works on view span painting\, sculpture\, stained glass\, and textiles\, all characterized by vivid and saturated colors\, dense patterns\, and layered imagery. Fallah draws on a wide range of traditions\, from fashion design to venerated art histories\, and finds inspiration in intersections of cultures from around the globe in his adoptive city of Los Angeles. The Yoruba collection alone is one of the three finest in the world. It contains a spectacular array of beaded objects\, including a majestic throne\, elaborate chiefly gowns and sophisticated divination regalia. \nA collection of post-apartheid election materials and contemporary South African art is being developed\, as are a number of collections of popular urban arts from countries including Tanzania and Muslim Senegal. Recently\, more than 400 textiles made by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo were gifted by the Christensen Foundation. \nThe collection represents some of the finest examples of men’s embroidered raffia pile cloths and women’s appliqué cloths. This collection complements already significant holdings of West African textiles from countries such as Mali and Ghana\, including kente and adinkra cloth and Asafo flags. The museum also has significant holdings of arts from the African Americas\, and notable arts from Haitian Vodou\, Brazil\, and Suriname. \n\n\n\nARTS OF THE AMERICAS\n\n\n \nThese holdings include a comprehensive collection of pre-Columbian ceramics with the best representations from West Mexico\, the Valley of Mexico\, and pre-Columbian Peru (with special strengths in the art of the Moche). The Fowler also possesses a cohesive collection of Guatemalan costumes; an extensive collection of Mexican clothing; textiles of Peru; and a comprehensive representation of field-collected market materials from Michoacan\, Mexico. Complementing the pre-Columbian collections are field collections of the Warao and Yecuana Indians of the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela and contemporary Latin American popular arts including Mexican trees of life\, Day of the Dead figures\, and masks from Metepec\, Oaxaca\, Michoacan\, Jalisco\, Puebla\, and Guanajuato. \nNative American materials from the U.S. and Canada are a small but significant part of the collection. Materials from the United States and Canada include well-known Northwest Coast material\, as well as a notable cross section of late nineteenth-century Inuit art and material culture. \n\n\n\nARTS OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA collections from Insular Southeast Asia\, including Indonesia\, the Philippines\, Malaysia\, and aboriginal Taiwan\, are among the strongest in the United States. The Indonesian and Philippine textiles reinforce the Fowler Museum’s standing as a major repository for the textile arts. Also included are significant collections of sculptural material from Sumatra\, Borneo\, Sulawesi\, and Luzon\, puppetry from Java and Bali\, basketry from Indonesia and the Philippines\, and metalwork from the Philippines. The primary strength of the Pacific collections lies in materials from Papua New Guinea\, especially the Papuan Gulf\, Trobriand Islands\, Sepik River\, and Maprik region. Australia and Polynesia are also represented by sizeable collections\, including 45 rare Maori cloaks. \nThe collections from mainland Asia are smaller but growing rapidly\, due to current collecting priorities. A collection of betel-chewing paraphernalia\, representing several countries in South and Southeast Asia\, is considered one of the finest in the world. Other holdings include textiles from Bhutan\, Pakistan\, India\, and Japan\, baskets and decorative arts from Japan\, puppetry from China\, Thailand\, India\, and Turkey\, and art and artifacts from Nepal. \n\n\n\nARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS\n\n\n \nThe Fowler Museum at UCLA also serves as a repository for archaeological collections acquired during research conducted by UCLA faculty\, staff\, students\, and other professional archaeologists. Documentation of the collections includes artifact catalogs\, excavation notes\, maps\, and photographs. These collections serve primarily as an archive for teaching and research. We are across the street from Brooklyn Bagel Bakery\, and lease the Praise Christian Fellowship church parking lot\, accessible off Roselake Ave. Visitors can park there\, and there is generally significant street parking on Beverly\, largely unrestricted in the evenings. \n \nWe’ve chosen an intentionally modest place-based name (2220 Beverly Blvd is our street address)\, because our venue is the container\, not the contents. Instead we want to foreground the artists\, series and programmers that inhabit the space. \nWhile we’re conscious of our place in the community\, we are not hyperlocal. We see Los Angeles as a world city\, and want to give safe harbor to international artists as well as Angelenos and Californians. We want to reflect the illimitable diversity of our city\, and give voice and stage to younger artists\, while honoring elder innovators\, wild thinkers and radical communities of practice. We particularly celebrate the autodidacts and ‘ordinary intellectuals’ who have long given this city its vibrancy\, strangeness\, dissensus and intensity. We’re open to all genres\, but are particularly interested in artists testing the limits of their categories. \n \nWe’re always looking out for fellow travelers\, and hope to grow and diversify our community over time. We beg your patience as we do so! We’ll inevitably pause to pilot\, experiment\, evolve and change\, and won’t be an always-on entertainment factory any time soon. It was known as the Shed from 1968-1972\, The Outcast from 1972-1983\, the famous Gauntlet II from 1983-2005\, then later\, Eagle LA. \n \nGauntlet II was in operation for 21 years. Then\, in the summer of 2005 Charlie and business partner Vince decided to buy the bar with the intention of making a name change. In April 2006\, Eagle LA was born\, or\, reborn as it may be. There was an original Eagle LA located in West Hollywood at the corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Fairfax. It operated for 15 years and closed in 1995. Although that Eagle is of no relation to Charlie or Vince\, they are proud to reestablish the Eagle LA and become the latest in a long line of Eagle bars in cities throughout the US and around the world.
