DESCRIPTION:PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY- PCH\, Malibu\n\n\n\nThe Pepperdine University Waves of Flags display commemorate the lives lost in the terror attacks on September 11\, 2001\, at Alumni Park on the Malibu campus. \nWaves of Flags commemorates the 2\,977 lives lost in the September 11 terror attacks and features a vast display of American flags for each American life lost as well as international flags representing the home countries of those from abroad. Made possible through the support of donors this year\, the installation will be on display at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu Canyon Road \n“Pepperdine has a long tradition of honoring those who have gone before us\,” said Pepperdine president Jim Gash (JD ’93). “For nearly two decades\, this community has paused on this day each year to remember\, to grieve\, and to celebrate the lives of those we lost on that day in 2001.” \nWaves of Flags became a University tradition in 2008 when the Pepperdine College Republicans\, inspired by a similar display\, wanted to bring the tribute to the University. For more than a decade\, it has been a significant project that has united the Pepperdine\, Malibu\, and Greater Los Angeles communities in service. Due to the pandemic\, the installation of the flags\, which is typically led by Pepperdine community members and volunteers from the Malibu community\, was executed by the University this year in consideration of the safety of local and surrounding communities. \nIn addition to the Waves of Flags installation\, Pepperdine is the permanent home of the Thomas E. Burnett\, Jr.\, Heroes Garden\, a place to honor all those who live heroic lives\, including Pepperdine alumnus Thomas E. Burnett\, Jr. (MBA ’95)\, a passenger on United Flight 93\, whose life was cut short in the September 11 attacks. The garden’s plaque reads: “Dedicated to freedom’s heroes of September 11\, 2001\, and the passengers of United Airlines Flight 93\, among them Pepperdine alumnus Thomas E. Burnett\, Jr.\, who sacrificed their lives to overcome terrorists’ intent on destroying American lives and landmarks in our nation’s capital. Originally opened in 1901\, Angels Flight® — the world’s shortest railway — has given more than 100 million rides on its hillside track. \n \n  \nIn 2017\, the Angels Flight® Railway Foundation selected the Angels Flight® Development Company\, LLC\, a joint venture led by the ACS Group\, to recondition\, operate\, and maintain the funicular for the next 30 years. Reliving life aboard a whaling ship and Melville’s soul-searching journey while the group huddled for warmth on the sand was a transformative experience. Tim realized the importance of learning outside of the traditional classroom and founded the Venice Oceanarium\, a Museum Without Walls. \n \nThis concept of blending the arts and sciences is the core of our programming. Since winning that battle\, the Peninsula Neighborhood Association has been actively involved in preserving the Peninsula’s quality of life through sponsoring local events and activities\, as well as representing Peninsula residents before the City on matters that could affect our neighborhood. \nMISSION STATEMENT:\nTo protect and preserve the beaches along the Long Beach Peninsula for public usage and to ensure these beaches\nand community be maintained at the highest residential and recreational standards. \nHISTORY\nOne of the first structures on the Peninsula was an isolated duck hunting club located at the bayside end of what is now 61st Place. The club was established at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. The first summer beach homes\, primarily owned by residents of Los Angeles and Pasadena\, were built in 1902-04. Owners of these summer homes were able to reach the Peninsula by means of an interurban electric train that ran from Los Angeles to Newport Beach. The train ran down the center of Ocean Boulevard the length of the Peninsula and then across a trestle connecting the east end of the Peninsula to Seal Beach. \n“The Pavilion\,” which at various times during its history served as an expensive restaurant and roller skating rink\, was established around 1910-12 at the oceanside end of 62nd Place\, which was then called Pier Avenue. Pier Avenue undoubtedly got its name from the pier that extended out into the ocean from The Pavilion. The Pavilion and its pier burned down a few years before a massive hurricane swept across the Peninsula in 1939\, destroying or causing significant damage to most structures throughout the Peninsula. \nThe Seaside Walk Boardwalk\, which was built in the ’20s\, is considered by residents to be a historical treasure. Attempts to replace it with concrete have been strongly opposed by Peninsula residents over the years and\, in the 1980s\, money was raised by residents to provide new surface boards (the City replaced the boards again in 2003). \nThe Peninsula has grown to encompass its current mix of single-family homes\, duplexes\, condominiums\, and apartments. Residents are a diverse group of families\, singles\, and senior citizens who have been residents for decades. Others will have In-Person options. \nThe 4 week Online classes will require a $50 deposit to reserve your spot\, with the rest due prior to the start of classes.
