DESCRIPTION:TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF DAWALI\n \nWhat is Diwali?\nDiwali\, or Dipawali\, is India’s biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians. \nOver the centuries\, Diwali has become a national festival that’s also enjoyed by non-Hindu communities. For instance\, in Jainism\, Diwali marks the nirvana\, or spiritual awakening\, of Lord Mahavira on October 15\, 527 B.C.; in Sikhism\, it honors the day that Guru Hargobind Ji\, the Sixth Sikh Guru\, was freed from imprisonment. Buddhists in India celebrate Diwali as well. \n  \n \n  \nWhen is Diwali 2021?\nDiwali is a five-day religious festival. The main festival day falls on a different date each autumn\, timed the Hindu lunar calendar\, but it usually falls in October or November. In 2021\, Diwali falls on Thursday\, Nov. 4. \nHow is Diwali celebrated?\nThe Diwali festival takes place over five days. \nThe First Day\, \nDhanteras\, is for celebrating Lakshmi\, the Hindu goddess of wealth\, prosperity\, youth and beauty. On this first day\, people buy new items such as jewelry\, clothing and utensils and light lamps to welcome Lakshm. \nThe Second Day\, \nknown as Chhoti Diwali\, Naraka Chaturdasior Kali Chaudas\, focuses on a story from Hindu mythology about the god Krishna and his defeat of the demon god Narakasura. On this day\, some people put up twinkling lights to celebrate his victory. \nThe Third Day\,\nknown as Diwali\, Deepawali\, or Lakshmi Puja\, is the most important day of the Diwali festival. On this day\, people visit family and friends to feast and exchange sweets and gifts. People also continue to light lamps and candles to welcome light and prosperity from the goddess Lakshmi. \nThe Fourth Day\,\nknown as Govardhan Puja or Padva\, some people in northern India build small piles of cow dung as a symbol of how Krishna defeated the king of the Hindu gods\, Indra\, by lifting up a mountain. \nThe First Day\,\nknown as Bhai Dooj or Yama Dwitiva\, is a day for brothers and sisters to honor one another. Siblings perform a ceremony called tilak and pray for one another. \nOn this final day of Diwali\, many people also set off fireworks. In 2017\, India’s supreme court banned the sale of fireworks for Diwali in the capital\, Delhi\, citing concerns about pollution and air quality. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho celebrates Diwali?\nDiwali is celebrated by people across different faiths in India\, including Hindus\, Jains\, Sikhs\, and some Muslims and Buddhists. Many people with South Asian heritage in other parts of the world also celebrate Diwali. \nWhile Diwali is a religious festival\, it has also become a secular national holiday celebrated widely across India\, much like Christmas has become a holiday celebrated by Christians and non-Christians alike in the U.S. \n  \n \nWhat do people eat during Diwali?\nDiwali is a time for feasting with family and enjoying plenty of sweet treats. One popular delicacy is kaju katli\, a fudge-like sweet made with ground cashews and sugar\, and sometimes flavored with a touch of rose water. Another popular treat in northern India is besan burfi\, another kind of fudge-like bar made from flour\, sugar and cardamom and sprinkled with almonds or pistachios. Mindfulness Meditation is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical\, mental\, and emotional experiences. Mindfulness has scientific support as a means to reduce stress\, improve attention\, boost the immune system\, reduce emotional reactivity\, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. These half hour weekly sessions are open to all who are interested in learning how to live more presently in life. DESCRIPTION:KIDS UNDER 12 FREE- Long Beach\nThe Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA) was founded in 1950 as a municipal art center for the city of Long Beach. Since its inception\, the Museum has been housed in the historic 1911 Elizabeth Milbank Anderson House. In 1957\, the Anderson House was designated as the Long Beach Museum of Art\, at which time the Museum began acquiring a permanent collection.\nIn 1977\, the Museum was honored with accreditation by the American Association of Museums\, which it has since maintained. Since 1986\, the Long Beach Museum of Art Foundation has managed the Museum\, governed by a Board of Trustees. In 2000\, the Museum completed a restoration of the historic residence and constructed a new two-story exhibition pavilion (in 2015 the pavilion was renamed the Hartman Pavilion). Since then\, the Museum has offered diverse and compelling exhibitions\, which has resulted in increased visitors and program attendance. \n  \n \nThe Museum’s permanent collection is diverse with more than 3\,200 works encompassing 300 years of American and European art in all media. Highlights from the collection include furniture by Charles and Ray Eames\, ceramics by Beatrice Wood\, and sculptures by Claire Falkenstein\, George Rickney and Peter Voulokos; Early 20th Century European Modernist paintings by Vasily Kandinsky\, Alexej Jawlensky and others from the Milton Wichner Collection; and contemporary artists such as James Jean\, Sherrie Wolf\, and Sandow Birk whose paintings have recently been added to the collection. \nSince 1951\, exhibitions presented by the Museum have been varied with shows ranging from individual artists to specific types of art. DESCRIPTION:TODAY IN HOLLYWOOD- Hollywood Regional Library\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for Zine Club\, where members of our group meetup in a virtual space to co-work\, chat and share inspiration for whatever projects we’re working on.  Zine Club is based on the idea of gathering together to create zines\, share zines we like\, zines that we are working on\, music to make zines to and much more. \n\n\nPronounced like magazine—without the mag—zines are self-published\, independently made\, usually photocopied\, and have a small print run. Zines rose to prominence in the 70s\, but one could argue that they have been around since the invention of Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press in 1439. \nZine content can be personal\, political\, niche\, artistic\, visual—there are no rules! DESCRIPTION:EVERY SATURDAY & SUNDAY- Beverly Hills\nThe Beverly Hills Trolley is back. The City of Beverly Hills offers free trolley service between Civic Center and Rodeo Drive every Saturday and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.\, except holidays*. And every First Thursdays” Evenings.  Additional trolley service days are added during summer and winter. This is not a narrated tour. Masks are required onboard the trolley regardless of vaccination status. \n  \n \nDepartures from Civic Center Trolley Stop: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, every hour. The Civic Center Trolley Stop is located on the southeast corner of Civic Center Drive and Third Street. On Sundays\, the Civic Center Trolley Stop is located in front of the Beverly Hills Courthouse at 9355 Burton Way. \nDepartures from Rodeo/Dayton Trolley Stop: 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.\, every half hour.  The Rodeo/Dayton Trolley Stop is located on the southeast corner of Rodeo Drive and Dayton Way (adjacent to Two Rodeo shopping plaza). \nCLICK HERE to view the trolley stops map and schedule. The City’s Trolley\, will run continuously on ‘First Thursdays’ evenings on a 40 minute curated route\, with various stops throughout. \n“I’m thrilled to see ‘First Thursdays’ come to life\,” said Chair of the Next Beverly Hills Committee\, Noelle Freeman. “On behalf of the Next Beverly Hills Committee\, I want to thank the City Council for its unanimous and enthusiastic support of this innovative idea and I want to thank all of our partners\, businesses and City staff who are working to make this a reality and a success.
