DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year.  \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure.  \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. TUES – SUNDAY- Exposition Park\nThe California African American Museum (CAAM) focuses on enrichment and education on the cultural heritage and history of African Americans with a focus on California and western United States. \nAdmission is free to all visitors. The California African American Museum’s mission is to research\, collect\, preserve\, and interpret for public enrichment the history\, art\, and culture of African Americans with an emphasis on California and the western United States. \n \n  \n  \nCAAM’s permanent collection consists of over 4\,000 objects ranging from the 1800s to the present. It encompasses paintings\, photographs\, film\, sculpture\, historical documents\, and artifacts\, and it spans nineteenth-century landscape paintings to modern artworks to contemporary mixed-media reflections on cultural and political events. \n \n  \nThe Museum’s first acquisitions included a bronze bust of civil rights activist Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune by artist Richmond Barthé and a sculpture by artist Maren Hassinger\, then at the start of her career. These laid the perfect groundwork for CAAM’s mandate to assemble a comprehensive\, thoughtful\, and wide-reaching collection. \n \n  \nCAAM’s deepest holdings include art made or connected to African Americans in California and the western United States. However\, the Museum also has significant works of contemporary art from the African diaspora (including Haiti\, Brazil\, and Jamaica)\, as well as traditional African art from Western\, Central\, and Sub-Saharan Africa. CAAM aims to represent the diverse contributions of African Americans in the United States\, but also to interpret how the past has affected identity in the present. \n  \n  \nToday\, CAAM oversees\, exhibits\, and conserves a rapidly growing collection. Each quarter\, curators review the current holdings and decide as a committee on future acquisitions.
