SUMMARY:The Old LA Zoo
DESCRIPTION:OPEN EVERYDAY- Griffith Park\nThe Old LA Zoo\, or The Griffith Park Zoo\, opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 with the opening of the new\, Los Angeles Zoo. The abandoned site of the Griffith Park Zoo\, complete with the ruins of animal enclosures\, is now a picnic area and hiking trail in Griffith Park. \n  \n \nThe Old LA Zoo opened in 1912 with a grand total of only 15 animals. Bears\, Lions\, Monkeys\, Macaw’s\, Elephants\, Reptiles\, Goats\, and Turtles now lived in the zoo\, which was built on the original site of Griffith J. Griffith‘s defunct ostrich farm. \n  \n \nAs Los Angeles grew\, the small Griffith Park Zoo was increasingly criticized as an “inadequate\, ugly\, poorly designed despite drawing more than 2 million visitors a year. \nIn 1958\, the city decided to create a brand new zoo\, and the Griffith Park Zoo closed in August 1966. Its animals were transferred to the new Los Angeles Zoo 2 miles away\, which opened a few months later. \n  \n \nThe animal enclosures\, with the bars removed\, were left as ruins and remain today. A large picnic area was added\, and NOW every summer\, the zoo is the location for the Independent Shakespeare Company’s  Free “Shakespeare in the Park” performances. \nThe Old Zoo is located on Griffith Park Dr. Only 2 miles from today’s LA Zoo\,   \n  \n \nUpon arriving\, you will see a small parking lot. Follow the path Up the hill to reach the abandoned enclosure. \nUpon arriving\, you will enter many of the original Grotto’s. There are lots of little spaces to crawl into\, AND stairs to climb up. \n  \n \nFollow the path around to get to the upper lever where you will find even more cages & enclosures. \n \nIf you are going to come for a visit\, make sure to bring a bottle of water and your imagination. \n  \nFor additional information\, visit the website @ \nfriendsofgriffithpark.org\n \n  \nFind more

SUMMARY:Tuesday Beach Yoga with Noel!
DESCRIPTION:EVERY TUESDAY- Santa Monica\nUnwind from all of your day’s stress in this beach yoga with Noel! \n\n\n\n\nThis event combines many of our favorite things — yoga\, the beach\, and friendships. We believe in romanticizing our daily lives and what better way to do that than doing yoga on a beautiful beach in Southern California? In this class\, Noel will lead us through yoga flows that invite us to check in with our body and mind. We will leave the mat feeling centered and rejuvenated. \nThis event is sponsored by The Phoenix\, a nonprofit organization that leverages community and fitness to lead a healthy lifestyle without substance use. We ask only one thing from our participants — 48 hours of sobriety. To ensure a safe and healthy space\, we ask everyone to wear a mask. Our Tuesday events are led by Noel\, a certified yoga instructor\, holistic health practitioner\, and substance use counselor in the making! Noel brings years of experience and wants one thing: to share her passion for healing with others for FREE. \nThere are many benefits of attending Phoenix events: \n\nFree loaner yoga mats provided\nExtra PPE (if you forget a mask or it breaks\, we have one for you)\nCommunity of shared experiences of wanting to lead a healthy lifestyle minus drugs\n\n  \nWe will meet every Tuesday at 4:30 PM at the grassy patch next to Lot 5. \nThe best way to spot us is by looking for a volunteer who will be wearing our shirt. Parking is just $2 at the lot. \nYou may bring your own mat and supplies if you wish. We also recommend bringing a jacket or sweater\, as the weather can get chilly in the evening hours.
