DESCRIPTION:FREE BOOK EXCHANGE BOXES Various Location around LA\nThrough Little Free Library book exchanges\, millions of books are exchanged each year\, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds. \n  \n \n  \n  \nWhy Does Book Access Matter?\nAcademically\, children growing up in homes without books are on average three years behind children in homes with lots of books\, even when controlled for other key factors. One of the most successful ways to improve the reading achievement of children is to increase their access to books\, especially at home. But two out of three children living in poverty have no books to call their own. \n  \n \nBook-sharing boxes play an essential role by providing 24/7 access to books (and encouraging a love of reading!) in areas where books are scarce. \nAt the Little Free Library nonprofit\, we’re working to fill book deserts and place libraries where they can make a big impact through our Impact Library Program. We’ve donated more than 1\,000 libraries through this program to-date. \n  \n \n  \nThe Los Angeles area is already home to almost 75 such libraries; use the Little Free Library map to find exact addresses for boxes in Hollywood\, Culver City\, Westchester\, Marina Del Rey\, Burbank\, and beyond. More locations will certainly be springing up soon. \n  \n \n  \nOur staff is dedicated to increasing book access and forging community connections.  Watch the adjacent video to get a 30-second introduction to learn how you can start one\, too! \n  \n \n  \n  \nWe provide ongoing support to Little Free Library volunteer stewards\, offering free library-building instructions\, an online store with pre-built library models and kits\, access to free or discounted books\, and an e-newsletter full of ideas and advice. You will discover plants and trees from all over the world as you wander along paths and learn about California history on your journey through the garden. \n \nGardens & Landscapes\nA stroll through Los Angeles County Arboretum will take you through a variety of gardens and landscapes that offer beauty and tranquility as well as ideas for your outdoor space at home. \n  \n\nA serene landscape of gentle pools\, water lilies and shaded benches\, the Aquatic Garden sits at the picturesque summit of Tallac Knoll\, with the Meyberg Waterfall below. \n\n\nSeven design vignettes creatively display great plants and ideas for Southern California landscapes. \n  \n \nClimate appropriate plants create bountiful drought-resilient landscapes. Plants thrive in the low water conditions of our Mediterranean climate. \n  \n \nChoice fruits and vegetables for Southern California are supported by a rain harvest system in this landscape of ideas and new plants for the home food garden. \n  \n \nPerennials\, shrub borders and flowering trees are artfully combined in this serene\, intimate landscape. Created in honor of Grace V. Kallam\, the garden offers design ideas and outstanding plants for Southern California Gardens. \n  \n \nShowcasing herbs and shrubs that contribute to human cultures around the world\, the Herb Garden reveals the botanical sources for medicines\, spices\, textiles and other basics of living. \n  \n \nA path resembling a serpent\, inspired by the creation myth of the Australian Aborigines\, winds through a selection of “Down Under” plants that are outstanding for our region. \n  \n \nStunning vistas of the San Gabriel Mountains are enjoyed across lawns framed by magnolias and temperate trees offering outstanding fall color. \n  \n \nDesigned by noted landscape architect Edward Huntsmen Trout\, the Rose Garden features heritage varieties and David Austin selections\, amid elegant pergolas and arbors\, all in a setting of citrus and swaying Mexican fan palms. \n  \n \nTreasures from Los Angeles County Arboretum’s tropical plant collections\, which include several thousand orchids\, find a home in this lush greenhouse display. \n  \n \nShowcasing plants from Mediterranean climates around the world\, the Water Conservation Garden seeks to demonstrate that careful planting design can achieve high standards of both landscape beauty and water stewardship. \n\nAdmission\nOn the third Tuesday of the month\, admission is free.
