The festivities of “Return of the Monarch” are as diverse as the community it serves. From lively face painting to soul-stirring live music, from delectable traditional food to spirited dancing, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. As you step onto the iconic Santa Monica Pier, you’ll be welcomed with open arms to a day filled with cultural richness and togetherness.
The celebration commences with a heartfelt blessing at the west end of the Pier, setting the tone for a day that’s not just about honoring the past but also celebrating the present. It’s a tribute to the cherished memories of our loved ones who have passed, but it’s also a vibrant and joyous celebration of life.
One of the highlights of this year’s event is the stunning altars created by talented artists and their families, including Sylvia Sanchez, Yolanda Medina, Felipe Sanchez, Leticia Vickers, Sergio Sanchez, and many others. These intricately designed altars are a testament to the enduring legacy of Dia de los Muertos. You’ll have the privilege of exploring these altars, each a unique work of art, until November 4th.
“Return of the Monarch” offers you a special opportunity to honor a loved one who has passed. Contribute your personal photographs to the communal altar, becoming part of this beautiful tapestry of remembrance. We encourage participants to use copies of photographs rather than originals, as frames will not be provided. Individuals are responsible for removing their frame(s) at the end of the celebration, and please note that SMPC is not liable for any damages that may occur.
A heartwarming addition to this year’s celebration is “Letters of Life.” This art installation, spanning from October 28 to November 4, invites members of the community to share their favorite Pier memories, photographs, and anecdotes of family and friends who have passed. These cherished memories will adorn our digital murals surrounding the historic 101-year-old Carousel, creating a poignant and inclusive space throughout our celebration.
