New Year, New Heights – Hike to Sandstone Peak

Ring in the New Year with a ranger-led hike to Sandstone Peak, the highest point in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

Discover how the mountains influence our choices and daily life.

This is a strenuous, 3-mile (round trip) hike with a 1,000-foot elevation gain.

Bring between 2-3 liters of water, wear sturdy shoes, a hat and sunscreen. Be prepared with layers for hot/cold temperatures. The hike will end when we arrive at the peak.

Visitors are welcome to hike back to the parking lot with park rangers or stay on the peak and explore nearby trails. Please bring a map or navigation device if you choose to do this.

The number of participants is limited, so please be sure to register.

Meet at the Sandstone Peak Trailhead at 9:30 a.m. There is very little cell reception in this area. Directions are posted below.

Directions:

To get to the Sandstone Peak trailhead from Pacific Coast Highway:

Drive north on the Pacific Coast Highway, past the Ventura County Line, then turn inland onto Yerba Buena Road. Climb past Iron Horse Ranch, Boney Pony Ranch and Circle X Ranch to find the Sandstone Peak trail head 6.4 miles from the PCH.

If you’re coming from the Valley, take Westlake Boulevard off the 101 Freeway, follow it until it becomes Decker Canyon, turn right where Decker merges with Mulholland Highway, then turn right onto Little Sycamore Canyon Road. This becomes Yerba Buena. The trail head is 4.5 miles from the turn off at Mulholland.
