Sona Jobarteh is a unique and pioneering musical icon of her time whose renown has been rapidly flourishing globally. 

Born into a Griot family from the Gambia, a tradition that dates back seven centuries, she is the first female within this tradition to become a professional virtuoso on the Kora. Her music is uniquely poised between the preservation of her rich cultural heritage and an accessible, modern style that relates to the current era and to audiences from all over the world. 

At the heart of her success as an artist is her dedication to humanitarian activism in the areas of social development and educational reform on the continent of Africa.  She is the Founding Director of The Gambia Academy, an institution dedicated to educational reform for Africans on the continent of Africa.

Celebrating its twenty-sixth season, this year’s Sunset Concerts showcase artists hailing from Jewish, African, and Cuban diasporas. Through their captivating performances, we explore the intertwining threads of music that connect us to the past and foster cultural unity, inspiring hope for a harmonious future.

The best part? Admission to the concerts is absolutely FREE! However, for parking, there will be a nominal fee of $20 upon arrival, but you can avail of a discounted rate of $15 with advance purchase. Skirball Members can take advantage of an even lower rate of $5 with advance purchase. We encourage you to carpool, rideshare, or use public transportation like Metro to make your journey even more sustainable and enjoyable.
